Too much emphasis on photoshop. Light on photographic technique and equipment.
This book is OK. I was expecting a lot more emphasis on the artistic aspects of digital photography and more information on technique. I was also expecting a lot more information on equipment. More than half of the book is devoted to editing and managing photos using photoshop.
Good content =Almost illegible picture caption & descriptions
While the content of the book is fine, I find the choice of typeface and color intensity of the picture captions and descriptions very very hard to read. The picture descriptions are in a very light grey color. Even close to a very good reading light, I had to strain to read the descriptions! I find it hard to understand the choice of light grey for text from a design and clarity standpoint. Showing the book to others confirmed my criticism. While I do use reading glasses, why was such a light grey color for picture captions and descriptions chosen?

DAM good book
Extremely usefull roadmap to navigating the new territory of digital workflow.If you are a professional photographer shooting digitally, this book is the essential guide toeverything you need to capitalize on digital's opportunity and avoid time consuming mistakes.I feel like an evangelist, as I've bought a handfull of copies for colleagues.

Finally, a great guide to managing thousands of photos
One of the most difficult realities of managing thousands of digital photo images is how to label them in a consitent manner so that you can easily retrieve photos and keep track of photos that have been altered. Another important consideration is if you will be able to read the information as software and hardware changes occur. Peter Krogh makes logical suggestions and tells you why he chose to label an image in a particular manner. The DAM Book also has great suggestions on backing up photos. I have always struggled with labeling/numbering consistency, Peter Krogh makes it all very logical.

Essential Resource for Photographers
Any photographer who is serious about their craft needs to take a good look at The DAM Book.This book was written by a true professional that knows their stuff and will assist you in getting your photos from the the boxes and boxes scattered no doubt throughout your house and into the digital repository that is a better place to store, access, and retrieve the precious prints that you work so hard on producing.

Great for Beginner and Intermediate Ogre users
This book guides you through getting Ogre set up on Windows and Linux as well giving you a very firm base of knowledge of the engine.This book is definately aimed at new users, but I have been using Ogre for over a year and still found this book to be helpful and enjoyable.The author does a great job of giving clear explainations and examples!Overall a wonder book!

The book is very good. It is definitely aimed at a newcomer to Ogre, but it can be useful even for people who have been around Ogre for a while as they might be missing a few concepts or not be familiar with a few components that they might not have used before.

As a graphic designer, I spend most of my time on the computer and have sorely missed creating with my hands. This book is bringing me back to that in an exciting way. Contrary to some reviewers I am very glad the book doesn't indulge too much in Photoshop instruction (although it does give information aboutPhotoshop that is most relevant to the processes, like print specifications). That would be a waste of space because there are a gazillion Photoshop books out there, but these techniques are much more rare and need as much space as possible to teach them. The authors do a great job of this. Very clear, thoughtful and succint writing. No wasted words.
DEFINITELY INNOVATIVE !!!!
If you are a serious printmaker this book is a must have.It shows you how to combine traditional printmaking with digital printing, printing on different substrates, has great pictures and much more. YOU DONT NEED AN EXPENSIVE PRINTER TO FOLLOW THIS BOOK.I have an EPSON 1280 INKJET ($399) and it works great.The ideas and possibilities are endless. I highly recommended this book !

Technology and creativity
It's good to see someone use technology creatively. All too often "art" and "technology" are seen as mutually exclusive. These authors show that that is certainly not the case.

As the author states in the introduction you need to read the book in a comfortable chair with a laptop+net connection, you cant read this without a keyboard with in arms reach.I expected the examples to be in pseudo code or at a less hard core level of C, if your programming is not top notch be carefull.

This book is class. Really great and the author is a gentleman. Also check out the online forums dedicate to this book at AI Junkie. There the author himself chips in with helpul advice for AI novices and stalwards alike. I have his other book too and it is also five stars.

Not a reference but a walk though book
I didn't find this book useful for finding what I'm looking for fast. Commands and Linux Topics are scattered about the book in different section. The directory and index had little use for finding what I'm looking for, a quick web search turned up faster focused results. This book touches the surface in order to get a novice going but thats about it.

linux informative
This is a good book for the linux "newbie" or someone who is famaliar with other flavors of linux and want to brush up on this new version of Fedora.The book gets really in depth but I realized that everything I was looking for was already self explanatory on the desktop.The core linux command line stuff isn't there but you should buy a book that contains that information before tackling a server build first anyway.
Unleashed books still the best!
just wanted to say how impressed I have been with the Unleashed series of books, I worked on an old Linux unleashed book years ago and lately I have been training SuSE and RedHat courses for a Novell platinum partner training company in South Africa, I have tried other books like the SuSE bible and have not been very satisfied since they are not comprehensive enough. I bought your book on Fedora 4 unleashed the other day and am pleased to say that it is still the same quality, easy to read and very comprehensive, that is why I recommend the unleashed series of books as the first choice to all my students.When you are in a training environment and you sometimes have very little time to prep a new course, having a book like this take a lot of pressure off you. ... About Mac
I like Robins ways of teaching, and her book is great. For me it is a bit confusing as I have to keek refering back to other sections. Otherwise great.

Poor effort
Robin Williams usually does a superb job - she's fun to read, has a perspective which is easy for the reader to understand and puts information clearly while not talking down to readers.

Just a little bit disappointed
I bought this book about 5-6 months ago mostly because I needed some help with texturing, material, and making my own UV maps specifically for Poser 6. After I read all the reviews on this book I was convinced that this could be THE book that shows you how you can make your own maps. I mean what else can you teach in a book written for "intermediate to advanced users" anyway, right? Well, not really. The first couple of chapters are awesome. Although I knew a lot about those basic functions, I still learned couple of neat tricks from the book. However, chapters on Material, Textures, and UV maps are just short overview of these topics. She keeps referring you to the reference manual, which is...you know how it is...My suggestion is that don't buy this book if you're looking for a source on Materials and UV maps...There are other books out there such as Summer's Texturing: Concepts and Techniques that explain the subject in detail.
Practical Poser 6 recomended
I've been the art business at a professional level for a long time .I am however new to 3D appplications and I have assembled quiet a library to educate myself in this area. Practical Poser 6 has made learning this wonderfull program a joy. It doesn't overcomplicate but in clear logical terms explains just exactly how to apply the many processes the program has available right down to where to find up to date plugins and also helps narrow the large array of content providers by listing many of them, what they do a nd how long they have been doing it. A must have for any poser 6 user.

Throw the Poser manual to the trash!!!
I read the whole manual that comes with Poser 6. It is a mess!!!Practical Poser is the book that should come with Poser. It is so easy to read, although you have to read a lot but, at the end, it is worth all the time spent with it. It is a step by step, avoid all the mistakes, instructional guide. I recomend it. Excellent primer on Robust Engineering... how to book
This book is quite readable, considering the topic, and does an excellent job of explaining the high level strategies of Dr. Taguchi's approach to optimization and experimentation.It also covers tactical issues like how to determine your ideal function and noise strategies. How to learn Robust Design
I like this book because it gives a very good introduction into the concepts of noise- and control-factors. It treats the concept of "energy transformation" good, which is important to find the appropriate Ideal Function for your product.Read more

I Recommend The New Game Maker Book To Everyone In Even Slight Interest
"The Game Maker's Apprentice" was the greatest book I've ever read. Not Kidding. I read the entire book in 2 and 1/2 days. I even skipped dinner the first day. The Game Maker's Apprentice comes with a CD-rom including all of the resources and finished games mentioned in the book and games that show step-by-step how to program it. I recommend it to ANYONE who is interested in the Computer Gaming or Video Gaming field. Not only does the book teach you how to program 9 great games and show you how all of the steps of game creation can be fun, but it also has 3 chapters specifically based on extending your games with tips by professionals.

Excellent resource for learning game oriented programming.
This book is an excellent resource for learning the fundamentals of game programming and the logic necessary to be successful at it. The book is well written, easy to follow and understand. The tutorials are fun and the games you create, while relatively simple, are quite enjoyable. The 3 or so chapters on game development are also sound and offer some excellent insight into making a good game. The Game Maker software included with the book, with it's built in programming language, is surprisingly powerful and intuitive. Additionally, Game Maker has a very strong on-line presence and has an extremely active forum for asking questions that aren't covered, or are beyond the scope of the book. (And it's all free too!!)
Must have book for Game Maker 6.1 software

Huges Help with Acorbat 7.0
I have been using Acrobat for projects since version 3.0.I've also bought a number of books on all these versions.This particular book is one of the best because it gives a specific problem or situation and then gives you specific instructions.No generalizations, just instructions.I found this approach very helpful with a last minute project and can see where it would have so many useful applications.Even for an experienced user of Acrobat, I found lots of nifty shortcuts that will make my Acrobat life better.

Not for the Beginner, Very Helpful for the Novice
Adobe Acrobat is a powerful program, capable of many things. In this book 150 of the best of thest tips and tricks are described in clear and easy language and illustrations using primarily screen shots that clearly show what should be done.

Good General Reference
As the title, and most of the reviews (save Mr. Strauchs') suggest, this is the manual that doesn't exist in print. It's a nice alternative to the Help menu as it's written in a personable style that offers more direct and real-world applications for the basics of FileMaker.
Thorough, complete, yet easy to understand; well-done tutorials
Concur with all the other reviewers that this is THE best, most complete, yet easy-to-follow guide to FileMaker Pro [FMP]. The authors really have gone out of their way in using plain words to describe arcane concepts, and the illustrations are well executed. Although there are the usual typos and occasional ambiguous/misleading statements, there is a continuously updated website with 'Errata' and sample completed tutorial exercises. [If these were included on a CD with the book, this book would warrant a super-nova rating!]
VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Are you a programmer that has been working with FileMaker for a while? If you are, then this book is for you! Authors Geoff Coffey and Susan Prosser, have done an outstanding job of writing a book that explores each feature in depth, offers shortcuts and workarounds, and explains the ramifications of options that a FileMaker Pro manual doesn't even mention.

A great photographer paints with too broad a brush (I know, mixed metaphor)
Stephen is a great photographer.He is a pioneer.He has written a tome on digital photography, its history, its technology, its ethics, its art, its....its...too much!I agree with one of the other reviewers that it would make a great textbook, but like many textbooks, they bog down in their "universality."They cover too much.They are more suited for the classroom so as to spark discussion and research on a broad range of topics as does this book.There are better "how to" books on Photoshop.There are better books on artistic technique.There are better books on the ethics and legality of photography as well as books on photographic art form and the photojournalist genre.No, I'm not going to list all those "better" books here because this is a review of one book, and I don't want to start a debate over what's better.I read the book.It is very interesting and has some magnificent examples of Stephen's work and how he creates.But much of the book put me to sleep and caused me to say to myself, "this is all very interesting, but is it something I really need to know or care about to do fine art printing, or, be a better photojournalist, etc." Hedoes do a really good job explaining the intricacies of digital sensors and how they all work, if you're interested in that sort of thing as well as the history, advantages and disadvantages of the scanning back.Ho hum! I don't care about sitting on an iceberg making a 5 minute exposure, but I do appreciate the effort and the result. In addition, Stephen does wear his politics and ethics on his sleeve a bit.For example he goes into whether or not to edit out a Coke can in a landscape photograph. Of course, he wouldn't, but many would. Who cares. It's not important, what's important is the photograph. And including rude caricatures of the President, references to bogus Lee Harvey Oswald pictures and a nit-picky criticism of Dorothea Lange's Migrant Mother left me scratching my head as to why he would stoop to such political-social issues in a book about digital photography.See, there's the "textbook" angle I was talking about.Great for discussion in the classroom course, Digital Photography 101, History, Art, Ethics and Society. Snooz! Well, anyway, my point is you could write a whole book on photographic history, or art, or ethics, etc. if that is your interest. And if that is what you are interested in reading, you should buy each one of those books. I have several of them. So, should you buy the book if you are serious about photography? Probably. You probably already have 10 or 20, books or more if you are serious about photogrphy, and you probably only refer to 3 or 4 of them on a repeated basis.I'd look at the book in a store somewhere, first. Then if you like it, buy it at Amazon (How's that for a plug!), or if you're overcome with guilt, buy it at the store you're in (remember, I'd edit out the Coke can).Stephen is a 5-star photographer and a pioneer in the field.His book gets 3 stars. His photgraphs get 5 stars.

Present at the Creation
Here's a book to which I would have liked to give the highest rating.Steven Johnson was one of the earliest practitioners of digital photography and has continued in an active role in innovation.Like King Alfonso X of Spain and Dean Acheson, if he did not make the world, he was at least present at the creation.

Unique is not best, but best in it's class
This is not the best hands-on, how-to book about designing your ownUnreal Tournament mod but it is the only book available. Thus, like the first Gutenberg printing press, it's the best in it's class! In the tutorials the authors assume that you already know as much about the Unreal Editor as they do. If you do not know the in's and out's and idiotsyncrasies of the Unreal Editor(which is why I bought the book in the first place) you will learn new definitions of patience during the first 23 chapters. In the end you will thank the authors for their altruism and capatalistic guile without which this knowledge would not be publicly available. Thank G-d and the great Satan for freedom of information! Thank America for the freedom to say this!

Great Book!
I was brand new to all aspects of game design, and I had no idea where to start.So I opened up the book preview in the Unreal Tournament folder and saw this book.I went up to borders and bought it a week later.I've had this book for almost 3 weeks now, and Holy Crap!From the start, it explains the history of the Unreal engine and gives you a close up look of all the tools used.It has in-depth tutorials that make designing your first map a breeze.The CD contained in the book also has the May 5 Personal Learning Edition on it.In fact, the CD is my only complaint.This book expects you to use the CD for every texture and static mesh used.Overall, the book is a must buy for any begginner.

Unreal Mapping.
This book is the best and only one book published in Unreal technology nobody beat this tutorial book for mapping in Unreal tournament 2004 I recommend this thick book to anyone wanting to master the Unreal editor.

an easy modular approach
[A review of the 3rd EDITION 2006.]
For everyone who uses LabVIEW
I've programmed in C, BASIC, and assembly in the past but I will never go back. I learned LV years ago with the first edition of this book and I love this software! One of my better decisions since now I make a living exclusively integrating hardware and writing code in LV. I plan on getting certifications after going through this edition. The style is engaging, light and straightforward. Even if you attend National Instruments formal training classes this book is a 'must have'. I always have it within reach at my desk.

Best book on portraits I've seen
I've read eight different books on portrait photography and this is by far the best one.I highly recommend it for anyone from the beginner who just wants better snapshots of their kids or family to the serious amateur who wants to learn how to take pro-looking, posed portraits.The book also covers lots of useful stuff on lighting in addition to posing.What I like about this book is you can get useful and practical stuff out of it no matter how much time you have.If you spend 10 minutes paging through chapter 5 on posing, you will immediately improve your portrait composition.If you spend more time understanding different lighting options (natural and flash), you'll improve even more.
Another book for my must have collection
This is one of the most well written and comprehensive books on portraiture that I have read in a long time.Very though and engaging- this book covers a lot of ground but does in such a way that the reader never becomes bored.This is a book about portrait photography, and the 1st half of it really applies to both film and digital.The last part is more photoshop-centric but also awesome.

My new photography bible.
I first purchased this book to show support for another Flickr member.I figured it would be a nice book about portrait photography with some nice photographs.I was pleasantly surprised when my book arrived and I realized it was a very comprehensive book on the subject of portrait photography!

good guide
It is a very good guide book for beginners really. I knew maybe just a little about Mac. But definitely not enough to help me go though a smooth work process. This book teaches me shortcuts and the necessary surviving skills I needed. I would recommend to other people.

Very Useful
I've been using Windows since the early 1990s and recently bought my first Mac. At first I thought this wasn't the book I wanted.I wanted to learn the OS on its own, not in "translation." For example, you'll find things like this in this book: "Finder = Windows Explorer," "Dock = Taskbar," etc. I thought it would hinder learning in a way total-immersion wouldn't; I'd hoped to learn to use the Mac directly. So after my husband picked up "Switching to the Mac" the first day I had the computer--in order to figure out how to network the Mac to our PCs and printers, and to transfer files, etc. (all of which is in this book)--I ordered four other books. I wanted to read them like other reviewers did: straight through, fun learning. But, it's not as easy as I'd hoped to learn a whole new operating system and, for me, the manuals don't prove to be fun reading -- as cheeky as their humor can be. So, I find myself reaching for "Switching to the Mac" as a necessary reference book. It presupposes that the reader is proficient at using a computer, but not a Mac (unlike other books, which either assume no computer knowledge or are written in "Mac language" for those familiar with previous Mac operating systems.)

Good program, difficult to learn
The product is a very good one but difficult to learn, I have spent much time in self help.The documentation is difficult to use and to follow.I had to separately purchase an instruction book.Particularly confusing is how it organizes the photo and the methods to categorize, tabing, collections, etc.After getting the hang of it, editing photos is really fun, and the results are great. Printing and emailing is rather simple.Good program, Thumbs Up.
This is a must read.
I struggled with Photoshop Elements 4 until I found Deke McClelland's Photoshop Elements 4 one-on-one.His training methods are well designed and will lead you to an understanding of the power of Photoshop Elements 4 I never imagined.The video is better than first class and the book is written in a very clear way that leads the student on a guided descovery of Elements 4.I asked my local camera store for help and they promised something in the future.When I cruised through Amazon.com and read other reviews of this book I simply took a chance and bought it.Wow, what a wonderful surprise.Deke won't let you down.Paul

It's the official book
Well there's just not that much to say about it. This book is the official digidesign version. It's basic like it's supposed to be. I spent some of my hard earned money on a training video from VTC and got a hell of a lot more from that. Make sure you get the one by Nathan Dickson? (last name I've forgotten).

The book is excellent and the only negetive comment is that I wish it included more information about how to connect and set up Pro Tools equipment and software. Otherwise it is better than the manuel that comes with it. ... Read more

A good introduction
Although I have not plowed through this entire book yet, it is shaping up as one of the books I've been looking for to tie up all the different threads that now make up the task of creating a good website.I may never actually create my business website all on my own, but at least I will have familiarity with the various tools that are current
