5-0 out of 5 stars Beginner to Intermediate Book for great results.
This is a wonderful book for beginning and intermediate photographers who want to know the tricks of the professional photographers out there.Although this book could be useful to those with pocket digital cameras, I believe this book is best suited to owners of DSLR Camera's.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Do you need to edit and organize your photos? If you do, then this book is for you. Author Barbara Brundage, has done an outstanding job of writing a book that is intended to make learning Elements easier by avoiding technical jargon as much as possible, and explaining why and when you'll want to use certain features in the program.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for Photoshop Users!
I have read several Photoshop books and watched training DVDs, but this book focused on my true interest, restoring old photographs. This book was more useful than all the other Photoshop training combined. I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ms. Eismann offers Great Insight...
...into the complicated, sometimes inscrutable world of Photoshop. If you're aspiring to be a professional photographer or post-production assistant, probably the single best thing you can do for your career development -aside from practice, practice, practice- is make sure you own a copy of this book and Ms. Eismann's other work: "Photoshop Masking & Compositing". Study her techniques, apply them to your own images and re-apply them until you can look at an image and know right off which tools you're likely to use and how.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent photography / digital camera instruction
I have purchased this book twice, it is an introduction to digital photography, particularly for the fixed lense Nikon SLR cameras (such as the 8700) and SLR digital cameras. If you have a simple point and click camera you will get some benefit from the book but not as much.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginner
Bought this book to go along with Digital Rebel XT purchase. The book has not disappointed. Explains everything there is from aperture, exposure, shutter speed etc in great detail yet easy to understand. Recommend it to beginner, intermediate & expert alike

5-0 out of 5 stars Latest edition excellent
Digital photography is a fast-moving target, and this book manages to keep abreast of the latest changes with valuable information that's vital for anyone doing digital photography. It explains all the key concepts clearly and completely, with lots of advice on getting the best photographs with any type of digital camera.I would have liked additional coverage of digital SLRs, but I have found that elsewhere, and still prefer Complete Digital Photography's treatment of the broader topics. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Deke - PhotoShop - McClelland
I am sure there are other books that might be easier to follow and that might offer more than this one for learning all of what PhotoShop has to offer, but I just have not found them yet. Light to read with easy step by step instructions for the beginner as well as the accomplished image processor.
5-0 out of 5 stars One-on-One -- it's not just another Photoshop book
Deke McClelland knows his subject very well and presents it in a clear and orderly way so new learning rests on a solid foundation. The format works: read the lesson, watch the DVD-ROM video lesson, do the exercises, take the quiz at the end of the chapter. Each lesson is designed to be understandable by those without much Photoshop experience and still include a few techniques that even experienced users probably don't know. And he does it all with good humor. Work files and video lessons are all included on the DVD-ROM in the book, which is bound so it lies open and flat on the desk without any hassle.
5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect jumpstart for Photoshop newbies
This was the jumpstart I needed to learning photoshop. This is not so much a tutorial as it is a get-up and start-using photoshop one-on-one session, exactly as the title suggests. So instead of learning the interface in text-book procedural fashion, it's kind of like apprenticing for the author Deke (who also wrote the photoshop bible book).BTW, the author is notably an Master at photoshop, as is apparent when he tells you "nobody uses this command, you can do that function with this new command here".There's a lot to be distracted in photoshop, hundreds and hundreds of different functions, and it turns out that many of these functions are obsolete and only left-in to satisfy old users, so having Deke point these things out is fantastic.Eg, unsharpen mask, obsolete.smart sharpen, da-shizzle.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Really Useful for the Users of this Camera
I picked this up based on the reviews here and prior to shooting with the camera. About half of this book contains beginning photography type information. I don't believe the owners of this camera are beginning photographers, and if they are there are better resources than this book. I also found the Nikon D200 user manual to be far more accessible and detailed and considerably more portable than this book. This book is written at too high a level to be useful in the field (and it's too big). It doesn't get deep enough into the menus, providing just a small paragraph overview. When you need to know how to quickly access menus, or discern what the menus allow you to do, the available options, etc., this book fails.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best of the D200 books, I think.

5-0 out of 5 stars The only d200 guide you need
There isn't much about this little guide to dislike. It's clear, concise and ultra easy to follow. Not only that, but it's a great size - you can stash it in your camera bag and carry it with you! I'm a dSLR newbie, so this wee guide was a relief. Loving it. Buy it. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not what i was hoping for
Well, I was hoping for this book to help me understand special CS2 filters, enhancements, etc....and what I got, was great stuff I cannot redo as shown in the pictures and very short guidelines for the most part of it. One example was the enhancing of the eyes (sometimes the iris turns out too dark, and there are ways of enhancing it to brighten the eyes.) The so called step-by-step guide in the book, I followed it and followed it, even got my husband to take a turn, and neither one of us was able to manage the enhancement, at least not in either of the 2 different versions explained. (We later figured out a different way, but I'm sure it's not as good as the example pictures shown in this book.) Like I said, overall it's a great book, that teaches you tons of neat stuff, but I don't think it's very easy to recreate, not even with the provided CD. You really need to be a very advanced CS2 user to be able to use this book as a tool for it's full potential. I'm hoping that once I've mastered more about CS2, this book will come in handy again. And yes, all the pictures are terrific quality, and it's nice to read and look at, but how much does that really matter, if you can't even recreate the things explained in it?

5-0 out of 5 stars A tremendous professional resource
I've found this book absolutely invaluable and perhaps the most useful book on Photoshop I've ever read. I agree with all the other reviewers whom endorse it but to those who ask: "who is this book for?" I'd point them in the direction of many other books better suited to their needs. How can you fault a book for not catering to everyone?! However this book was perfect for me - a busy professional photographer. I've been using Photoshop for years but have huge holes in my understanding. I really needed to gain more sophisticated and practical understanding of many fundamental principles and complex procedures as quickly and efficiently as possible. I don't have the time or patience for lessons rarely practical to my needs.
3-0 out of 5 stars who's it for?
Best suited for someone who has at least a little experience with earlier versions of Photoshop, this text could be better organized.Could also benefit from more detail and better expalnation of how things work. I did find useful the sections on camera quality, historical references, and the author provides links to external websites which this reader found helpful for research.Print and paper quality is very good, but when are we going to see a software book written (or at least containing images) by a non-fashion photographer? The women in ME's photos are merely over-decorated objects, and might as well be artificial mannequins. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Learnt invalueable lessons from this book.
Photoshop Elements 4.0 may not be as feature rich as Photoshop CS. But it packs more than enough punch to stand on its own. Scott Kelby clearly illustates this point in this book. The organization of this book is very helpful to jump specifically to a particular technique and use them. The teach by example model is very effective. A must have reference for anyone using Photoshop Elements 4.0.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
I was extremely impressed with this book! You can go directly to the chapter you are interested in, but I read it cover-to-cover to not miss anything.Beautiful, clear illustrations of exactly what you need to do for all kinds of photo modifications, including stuff I would never have thought possible.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a great book!
Don't be scared away from buying this book because some reviewers here say, "It's not for beginners."True, it doesn't take you through the product menu by menu and tell you what each little tool or piece of functionality does. But if you want to learn the basics of photo editing (anything more advanced than the auto fix options)in Photoshop Elements 4, this is definitely a good book for you.

1-0 out of 5 stars watered-down, illustrated by amateur photos
I bought this book with the camera hoping to learn something that I would not be able to figure out effortlessly on my own using manual or pressing buttons. I wish I saved the money. Book has basic instructions from long-time user. No specific insights of the professional. Photos that are illustrating the book are plain and boring. No huge mistakes in light or composition, just ordinary objects in uninspired setting.
4-0 out of 5 stars Digital Rebel Field Guide
A much better guide than the "Magic Lantern Guide", it still centers on the controls of the camera, but does go into better detail towards the end of the book, about how to take better photos with it, if you only had one book to buy, buy this one first!

5-0 out of 5 stars Give you clear look of little giant
This book gives you the bird-eye view of the world's renowned photo management software, it has some useful information for amateur photographer who is intended to use iPhoto software, written in plain english. It is little interesting that one-thirds of the entire book contents are cover how to choose the right digital camera and how to take a good shot, of course, you don't have to worry since its another two-thirds of pages are fulled about some kind of "soft" thing, which is about acquire, manage, tag, retouch and share or archive your pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful!
"Digital SLR Cameras" is helpful for someone trying to decide whether to upgrade from a point-and-shoot camera to an SLR.Photos comparing the two camera types, as well as illustrating various SLR features are provided throughout the material.Noise, depth of field, lens dust, exposure, histograms, different file storage formats, infrared options, and basic editing were all covered.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good Book, but...
Having recently decided to move to the DSLR world, I needed to learn how to shoot pictures in mode other than Full Auto.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too much emphasis on photoshop. Light on photographic technique and equipment.
This book is OK. I was expecting a lot more emphasis on the artistic aspects of digital photography and more information on technique. I was also expecting a lot more information on equipment. More than half of the book is devoted to editing and managing photos using photoshop.
1-0 out of 5 stars Good content =Almost illegible picture caption & descriptions
While the content of the book is fine, I find the choice of typeface and color intensity of the picture captions and descriptions very very hard to read. The picture descriptions are in a very light grey color. Even close to a very good reading light, I had to strain to read the descriptions! I find it hard to understand the choice of light grey for text from a design and clarity standpoint. Showing the book to others confirmed my criticism. While I do use reading glasses, why was such a light grey color for picture captions and descriptions chosen?

Extremely usefull roadmap to navigating the new territory of digital workflow. If you are a professional photographer shooting digitally, this book is the essential guide toeverything you need to capitalize on digital's opportunity and avoid time consuming mistakes.I feel like an evangelist, as I've bought a handfull of copies for colleagues.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a great guide to managing thousands of photos
One of the most difficult realities of managing thousands of digital photo images is how to label them in a consitent manner so that you can easily retrieve photos and keep track of photos that have been altered. Another important consideration is if you will be able to read the information as software and hardware changes occur. Peter Krogh makes logical suggestions and tells you why he chose to label an image in a particular manner. The DAM Book also has great suggestions on backing up photos. I have always struggled with labeling/numbering consistency, Peter Krogh makes it all very logical.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Resource for Photographers
Any photographer who is serious about their craft needs to take a good look at The DAM Book. This book was written by a true professional that knows their stuff and will assist you in getting your photos from the the boxes and boxes scattered no doubt throughout your house and into the digital repository that is a better place to store, access, and retrieve the precious prints that you work so hard on producing.

3-0 out of 5 stars A great photographer paints with too broad a brush (I know, mixed metaphor)
Stephen is a great photographer. He is a pioneer. He has written a tome on digital photography, its history, its technology, its ethics, its art, its....its...too much!I agree with one of the other reviewers that it would make a great textbook, but like many textbooks, they bog down in their "universality."They cover too much. They are more suited for the classroom so as to spark discussion and research on a broad range of topics as does this book. There are better "how to" books on Photoshop. There are better books on artistic technique. There are better books on the ethics and legality of photography as well as books on photographic art form and the photojournalist genre. No, I'm not going to list all those "better" books here because this is a review of one book, and I don't want to start a debate over what's better.I read the book.It is very interesting and has some magnificent examples of Stephen's work and how he creates. But much of the book put me to sleep and caused me to say to myself, "this is all very interesting, but is it something I really need to know or care about to do fine art printing, or, be a better photojournalist, etc." Hedoes do a really good job explaining the intricacies of digital sensors and how they all work, if you're interested in that sort of thing as well as the history, advantages and disadvantages of the scanning back.Ho hum! I don't care about sitting on an iceberg making a 5 minute exposure, but I do appreciate the effort and the result. In addition, Stephen does wear his politics and ethics on his sleeve a bit.For example he goes into whether or not to edit out a Coke can in a landscape photograph. Of course, he wouldn't, but many would. Who cares. It's not important, what's important is the photograph. And including rude caricatures of the President, references to bogus Lee Harvey Oswald pictures and a nit-picky criticism of Dorothea Lange's Migrant Mother left me scratching my head as to why he would stoop to such political-social issues in a book about digital photography.See, there's the "textbook" angle I was talking about.Great for discussion in the classroom course, Digital Photography 101, History, Art, Ethics and Society. Snooz! Well, anyway, my point is you could write a whole book on photographic history, or art, or ethics, etc. if that is your interest. And if that is what you are interested in reading, you should buy each one of those books. I have several of them. So, should you buy the book if you are serious about photography? Probably. You probably already have 10 or 20, books or more if you are serious about photogrphy, and you probably only refer to 3 or 4 of them on a repeated basis.I'd look at the book in a store somewhere, first. Then if you like it, buy it at Amazon (How's that for a plug!), or if you're overcome with guilt, buy it at the store you're in (remember, I'd edit out the Coke can).Stephen is a 5-star photographer and a pioneer in the field. His book gets 3 stars. His photgraphs get 5 stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars Present at the Creation
Here's a book to which I would have liked to give the highest rating.Steven Johnson was one of the earliest practitioners of digital photography and has continued in an active role in innovation.Like King Alfonso X of Spain and Dean Acheson, if he did not make the world, he was at least present at the creation.
5-0 out of 5 stars stunning
This is, quite simply, a gorgeous book. Filled with amazing photos by Stephen Johnson, it provides a wealth of information for photographers of any ability.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on portraits I've seen
I've read eight different books on portrait photography and this is by far the best one.I highly recommend it for anyone from the beginner who just wants better snapshots of their kids or family to the serious amateur who wants to learn how to take pro-looking, posed portraits. The book also covers lots of useful stuff on lighting in addition to posing. What I like about this book is you can get useful and practical stuff out of it no matter how much time you have.If you spend 10 minutes paging through chapter 5 on posing, you will immediately improve your portrait composition. If you spend more time understanding different lighting options (natural and flash), you'll improve even more.
5-0 out of 5 stars Another book for my must have collection
This is one of the most well written and comprehensive books on portraiture that I have read in a long time.Very though and engaging- this book covers a lot of ground but does in such a way that the reader never becomes bored. This is a book about portrait photography, and the 1st half of it really applies to both film and digital. The last part is more photoshop-centric but also awesome.

5-0 out of 5 stars My new photography bible.
I first purchased this book to show support for another Flickr member.I figured it would be a nice book about portrait photography with some nice photographs.I was pleasantly surprised when my book arrived and I realized it was a very comprehensive book on the subject of portrait photography!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good program, difficult to learn
The product is a very good one but difficult to learn, I have spent much time in self help. The documentation is difficult to use and to follow.I had to separately purchase an instruction book.Particularly confusing is how it organizes the photo and the methods to categorize, tabing, collections, etc. After getting the hang of it, editing photos is really fun, and the results are great. Printing and emailing is rather simple.Good program, Thumbs Up.
5-0 out of 5 stars This is a must read.
I struggled with Photoshop Elements 4 until I found Deke McClelland's Photoshop Elements 4 one-on-one.His training methods are well designed and will lead you to an understanding of the power of Photoshop Elements 4 I never imagined. The video is better than first class and the book is written in a very clear way that leads the student on a guided descovery of Elements 4.I asked my local camera store for help and they promised something in the future. When I cruised through Amazon.com and read other reviews of this book I simply took a chance and bought it.Wow, what a wonderful surprise.Deke won't let you down.Paul

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have !!!
Photshop is an asset to anyone with a computer. This book, which is quite easy to follow, is a much needed addition to the bookshelf.
