5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful intro to the world of type...
As an avid reader and (some would argue) somewhat-successful writer, I spend a lot of time looking at the printed word. But I don't have a full appreciation behind the effort and thought that goes into how that word gets transferred from writer to reader on paper.Robin Williams has a great book for those of us who are not professionals in the world of typesetting...The Non-Designer's Type Book.
3-0 out of 5 stars Get the "The Non-Designer's Design Book" instead
I'm a big fan of the author, but I feel this is not one of her best books. She clearly illustrates all the important type concepts, but the book felt too long for the amount of information presented.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Guide to help get your message into print.
I have been reading Robin Williams' books since "The Mac is Not a Typewriter" came out.

5-0 out of 5 stars The other books
Unfortunatly I arrived at Virginia Commonwealth University's graphic design program after Phil Meggs had passed away. His legacy still lives on. Rob Carter on the other hand has been my professor. He is a great man who pushes his students into experimenting and becoming comfortable with their own styles of design. He is by no means a "stuffy" guy. I have some of their books and I don't have one problem with them at all.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Useful Book
The Digital Designer is a quality publication , plus it covers enough ground to be useful in all of the classes we teach, so students going through the program will probably keep it and use it in several classes.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars It is good for learning the EAGLE software
It is short and easy to learn the basics of creating schematics, layout, and producing gerber files with the EAGLE software only.
5-0 out of 5 stars A good solid piece of information
This is a very useful book as the author walks the reader through the different steps necessary to build a PCB. The book is focused on a particular software tool although it does not make it less useful. However, it would have been better if the author had used the name of the software package described as part of the title of the book... I would have bought it earlier!
1-0 out of 5 stars A cut and paste of eagle manual
A big portion of this book is literally a cut and paste version of eagle manual and screen snapshots. If you have slightly ECE and chemistry background, you will find this is an almost useless book. I give it one star because this book collected some useful URLs. However, you can always find those links through online search engines. Don't waste your money on it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A readable treatment of the spread of books and its affects
Febvre and Martin's, The Coming of the Book, is a scholarly work without the dry academic tone of a textbook. Having said that, this isn't a casual read, as the authors will provide some of the details of edition sizes, costs, and distribution. The authors themselves give the reason for the present work, "...we hope to establish how and why the printed book was something more than a triumph of technical ingenuity, but was also one of the most potent agents at the disposal of western civilization in bringing together the scattered ideas of representative thinkers." In support of this thesis, Febvre and Martin spend a considerable portion of the book on technical issues such as the invention of the moveable-type press, how books were constructed, economic and social forces affecting the distribution and printing of books, and the geography of the spread of books. About the last third focuses on, "The Book as a Force for Change."5-0 out of 5 stars start here
The Coming of the Book is essential reading for anyone interested in book history, the development of modern literary languages, or the growth of capitalism in early modern Europe. It's an excellent example of the social history that the Annales school of sociologists and historians worked to produce: coherent narrative drawn not from specific important events but from the interpretation of massive amounts of data on the 'everyday' professional lives of early type founders, journeyman printers, shippers and booksellers. Most importantly, Febvre and Martin analyze the affect that the unique pressures of print as a capitalist enterprise (the capital investment in type, the costs of paper and of labor, problems in transport and marketing) had on the development of standardized print-languages, the development of 'mass' culture, and the spread and evolving functions of literacy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful history of early printing
Lucien Febvre and Jean-Henri Martin have integrated careful archival research with alively recounting of historywhich transcends individual rulers in thisaccount of early printing. The book is particularlyinteresting since we also livein a time when the economics and sociologyofinformation dissemination is changing quickly.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Title says it All
I cannot recommend this book highly enough for the home gageteer. The author Jan Axelson is a rare example of someone that knows her stuff, explains it well to novices, and provides excellent generic examples of code. The examples provided cover situations such as; exporting data bits out thru the parallel port, reading info from the data port, searching for data ports and addresses, and using the parallel port to communicate pc to pc.Seldom do you find a"can-do" person that provides excellent instruction at a beginner's level. The fascination of this book is that as home computers become more powerful, they are still limited in their effect on the external environment, except through dedicated peripherals, such as printers, scanners, etc. With this book, a pc port relay kit (purchased off the internet), and maybe a semester of Visual Basic instruction and " you da man ".Once you can open and close a relay connected to your parallel port from a visual basic program you are off and running. Most electrical devices in you home become fair game. This book needs an update, except for a Tour-de Force in the beginning chapters of code segments in Pascal, Assembler And Quick-Basic, the remainder of the book is in Visual basic 4.0. This reader had no problem importing the examples provided on the enclosed floppy disk into Visual Basic 5.0 .This author has also written a sister book "The Complete Serial Port ", and it is on my "must read " list.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lacking in content, but some inspiring photos.
As an experienced bookmaker, I was anxious to try some of the projects in this book. BE VERY CAUTIOUS!I found many errors in measurments in this book, which can cost you valuable paper and time! This book can be very vague about what size your papers should be and exactly how much of it you need.If you simply rely on what the author says, you may find yourself frustrated with a project that didn't work out.5-0 out of 5 stars A direct, to-the-point, "user friendly" instructional guide
The collaborative effort of self-employed book artist Mary McCarthy and educator/writer Philip Manna, Making Books By Hand: A Step-By-Step Guide is a direct, to-the-point, "user friendly" instructional guide to the art and craft of creating beautiful and useful scrapbooks, photo albums, diaries, blank books, and more. Full-color photographs illustrate each part of the process of crafting accordion art books, photo albums, box books, scrolls, etc. Making Books By Hand is commended as being first-rate guidebook for those interested in cultivating their skill in a unique and satisfying hobby, or who want to make exceptional and memorable gifts for friends and loved ones.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic, updated
Ignore the review complaining about the long wait for the 3rd edition. The 3rd is here and it's great. I have a core library of titles that I recommend to folks who are seriously interested in the real process of publishing, not the polyanna version sold to vanity publishers. This book is essential reading for understanding the broad scope of the publishing process. The chapters on production are particularly useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars New Edition of a Classic
One of the best texts on the production of books is "Bookmaking" by Marshall Lee. The second edition is more than twenty years old, but the third edition was just published. It covers virtually all topics, from word-processing to book printing, and everything in between. Most importantly, it shows how the computer has changed the publishing world.1-0 out of 5 stars Where is it?

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent one-stop reference for a very complex field
The 1997 edition of the Encyclopedia of Packaging Technology is an excellent reference for anyone who works with packaging, especially for those people who have no academic or vocational training in these subjects. You will get the clearest explanations of any subject that falls under packaging.I only wish it included the original material from 1986. The 1997 edition adds to what is in 1986, but if you do not have the 1986 edition, you will be missing relevant background on the older technologies. The only packaging reference you will need unless you are trying to figure out how to actually create a package.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Quark book found
I searched for Quark books as I am taking a graphics degree and found the course books both years out of date and full of errors, tutors told me they were still the best available and looking in book stores and online I had to agree till I saw this tome and used it, excellent book of Quark and so very easy to follow.

5-0 out of 5 stars QuarkXPress 6 for Print and Web Design
As an Evangelist for Quark, I get to read ALL the titles on QuarkXPress. During my many hours of reading, I found this amazing book "QuarkXPress 6 for Print and Web Design" by Michael Baumgardt. This was the book that I was looking for! Michael's book is a superlative read for the creative mind. It's great to find an author that puts into words the level of creativity you can build with QuarkXPress. I love this book and recommend it whenever I am speaking at an industry event.
5-0 out of 5 stars Web site building using Quark 6.0
I rebuilt my web site in 2 days using Quark 6.0 thanks to this book!I upgraded to Quark 6.0 in July, 2003 because of the demonstration showing the web site building capabilities. I don't want a flash movie! I don't want anything fancy! Just clean, simple pages assembled in an easy application. Michael Baumgardt has written a "cookbook" illustrating just that. He also has color screen grabs and illustrations on every page. He covers using Photoshop in conjunction with Quark, because that's what the average graphic designer is going to be doing. This book is for the mid-to-high level user of both Photoshop and Quark applications. There's some history on desk top publishing as well. I bought another book just before this one that barely covered the web site building capabilities - what a waste of time. ... Read more

Editorial Review

As the computer becomes more entrenched in everything we do, so too has it invaded the crafting domain. Yet beginning crafters and experts alike who may have a working knowledge of the more practical aspects of their computer's capabilities often have barely begun to explore its creative potential. Computer expert and self-described "computer mom" Kay Hall knows exactly how to teach such things to the computer novice eager to use that expensive piece of equipment for more than paying bills and sending e-mail.With extremely readable text and dozens of diagrams (actually, black-and-white photos of the computer screen illustrating exactly what she's describing), she walks us carefully through the basics of printer hardware, crafting software (everything from simple greeting card and calendar programs to Sierra's Print Artist and Adobe PhotoDeluxe), design elements (layout templates, fonts, clip art, scanning), and various printable materials for ink-jet printers. She offers good general coverage on paper-craft materials like decorative scissors and punches, embossing powder, and glitter pens, and she does not neglect the finishing steps of sealing, laminating, and binding.Read more
