5-0 out of 5 stars Champions Whose Names You Never Knew
"As exciting as watching paint dry" is proverbial. If watching paint dry does not excite you, how about watching typesetters set type competitively? Before you start yawning, realize that there were racers who set type, just as now there are racers who bicycle, and crowds paid to watch them and cheered and bet on the outcome. There must have been something not-so-dull about the contests, and there is nothing dull about _The Swifts: Printers in the Age of Typesetting Races_ (University of Virginia Press) by Walker Rumble.Partly this is because of his strange subject; the Swifts were the typesetters who were so good at their craft they could race against others, and they were colorful characters involved in an eccentric sport. Also, Rumble, a historian who has worked as a printer, has included a great deal about printing technology, printing unions, and the place of women in the trade.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow! What a Nice Collection of Type!
I received my Solotype Catalog today and it was beyond anything I expected! I have worked with type for over 60 years and this is a wonderful collection of type and includes the colorful 19th Century fonts as well as recent fonts (to 1992). Special effects are well presented. This book is a must for anyone interested in type and letterforms.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST for anyone who loves typography!
Dan Solo's book has the most beutiful fonts I've seen.He has a love of typography, and this comes out not just in the quality and number of fonts, but in the manner they are presented.I did my wedding invites with thesefonts, and keep looking for reasons to bring back such beautiful typefacesas Nicholas Cochin, or authentic Gold Rush era such as Smuggler, FrenchKate, and Lyons Egyptian.

5-0 out of 5 stars this is a great book to get really inspired
this is a great book to get really inspired and makes to instantly want to create something beatifull with it. Only problem is to get it in your computer system (digitalize it) which takes me about one hour for most headline fonts which don't need so much car ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb reference book - a must purchase
I teach university level Graphic Design and Typography and brought my copy into class, like I do many books, hoping to inspire my students. If anyone has ever taught young college students, inspiration doesn't always come as we expect. Most of the time they give a half willing glance with little comment. However, when I brought this book into class, showed them the contents, and then noted the price, their interests immediately grew. It is an extremely large book and full of examples or overviews of everyone throughout history who has made contributions into design and type. It is not meant to be an exhaustive book on the subject and there were some designers and artists which possibly needed or deserved more exposure. However, it sparked enough interest in my students that before the class was over I had five students signing their name for me to order them a copy.5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Amazes Me
As a professor of Visual Communication, I recommend this book to all of my design students and collegues for several reasons:5-0 out of 5 stars TYPO - When Who How

5-0 out of 5 stars Info that a Designer who IS NOT a novice designer needs
If you are going into or even if you are in the field of Graphic Design you should get this book. It is very informative. Perhaps if you are a NOVICE designer you don't need it. If you are a design student this book will be very helpful for you before you get into a real job.

4-0 out of 5 stars design production
A thourough and interesting book on the processes and steps involved in print design. A very good informative read for anyone entering the business of graphic design.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too much and a little dated
If you want one book that introduces everything involved in print production this may be a good book for you. There is a lot of information in this book. More than any novice designer would need to know. For that reason I found it a bit overwhelming.

1-0 out of 5 stars worthless....
This is without a doubt the worst reference on typography that I have ever read. It is filled with useless metaphors and examples. I really expected more from the Adobe Press.

4-0 out of 5 stars 5 Quick Truths
1. Entertainment, not resource. Provides insight into the uses of type, as well as a brief history of many different typefaces. Robert Bringhurst's "The Elements of Typography" (0881792063) is a better book for those in need of a resource.
3-0 out of 5 stars OK, not useful
This book was more flash than content. It looks very nice, always having a gripping picture on the left, a nice layout on the right, and font examples that illustrate the point. As a beginning designer, I didn't learn anything new or concrete, but enjoyed having the book wash over me for awhile.

4-0 out of 5 stars Visual and historical information
Typography may be unique among arts in its historical ties to commerce. Type foundries create and sell fonts as a matter of business. Trades like printing and advertising have historically publicized type by using it, and driven the creation of new fonts. Typography is also distinctive in that, for such small field, it has so many large personalities. 4-0 out of 5 stars Definitely worth reading
This book provides a great insight into the history and design of type, and quite a bit of the commentary is useful even today. Morison is well known, of course, for the Times New Roman face - and there is a section inthe book on that face. But his commentary on the designing of faces likePlantin and Bembo is much more interesting, if you ask me. Also, if you areat all a fan of Eric Gill, you will like the section on Perpetua andFelicity. Anyone interested in the history of type should have this book, that much is certain. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book on a difficult subject
Before buying this book I had a small amount of experience with the .Net graphics architecture and was pretty much confused about the whole subject.I had just finished a project where I read someone else's simple example of how to read a multiple page image file. After that I decided to look for a good book on the subject and came across this one.I haven't finished reading the book yet, but I will tell you that everything is explained in a great amount of detail and is very well written. The author covers all of the major topics facing someone who is wanting to learn more about the .Net graphics classes without leaving out some important pieces (which I've had happen to me with other authors). He leaves his coding examples simple so that you don't have to dig through page after page of useless code to find the pieces you are looking for.I would recommend this book for anyone who is either currently working with .Net graphics or those who just want to expand their knowledge of a very important piece of the .Net framework.

3-0 out of 5 stars No VB.NET code in the book
The cover of the book states "Project Source Code in C# AND Visual Basic.Net"There is no VB.NET code in the book.If you want VB code you need to look on the CD that comes with the book. This is probably a big plus to C programmers and a major drawback to VB programmers. If you are not a C programmer, this book is a waste of money, because not only will you have to read a boring book; you will have to decipher the C# which can really slow you down. However, if you are a C programmer or are trying to become one, then this book is a good reference for .Net graphics.

5-0 out of 5 stars An invitation to graphics with the .Net Framework
I was lost going from Visual Basic 6 to VB.Net. All my little graphics techniques and shortcuts were useless, and I didn't understand the underlying principles. This book showed me the way.Read more
