3-0 out of 5 stars Necessary for SGML; useless for XML
This book is, regrettably, the one authoritative book on the SGML standard.Given how broad and confusing the SGML standard is, it's not surprising that this book on it is equally opaque -- this is, in my experience, the worst-written technical book I've ever seen that is not actually inaccurate. But if you're doing serious SGML development, you have no choice but to get this book and to spent forever trying to make sense of it.4-0 out of 5 stars Required SGML Reading IF
you are planning on really getting into the world of SGML.If you are a beginner, or just playing with SGML, this book isn't for you.The book does contain the entire ISO 8879 standard and is extensively crossreferenced. After five years using it, I still find it easy to get lost inthe references. If you want the final, definative word from the MAN whowrote the standard, this is it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Turgid, obscure, confusing; but essential for advanced SGML.
This is a particularly badly written book on a particularly badly designed and written standard, SGML. Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not what you would expect from a "cookbook"
I'm still slogging through this weighty tome but so far it hasn't providedmuch in the way of solutions. This book might be a nice reference forsomeone who's at the point where they want to address obscure SGMLproblems, it definitely isn't appropriate for someone new to SGML.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not for newbies, but an _excellent_ guide
The XML and SGML Cookbook is really more about SGML than about XML, but users of the entire family of markup languages will find much to learn in this entertaining and readable tome. Jelliffe starts with vivid descriptions of the information structuring process, with useful warnings and suggestions throughout. His recipes for document structures are useful and cover a wide variety of possible situations. The section on internationalization is compelling, explaining clearly the wide variety of issues that complicate data processing and typesetting.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Nuts and Bolts Approach to SGML and XML DTD's
The company I work for threw me into the arduous task of not only setting standards for our document data but to manage the entire process of an SGML implementation. A dream job for a technical writer? Maybe but I must have been delusional! 5-0 out of 5 stars For newbies, and SGML guru's alike !
"Developing SGML DTD's" is both a great book to get up to speedon SGML and a reference book for you SGML guru's. This book totally sucks.Topics are reworded and are all over the book.
4-0 out of 5 stars The authors provide good info on sgml/html related topics
I have been researching moving SGML documents to the Web, and this book provided a comprehensive coverage of this topic. The authors lay out the various approaches to converting SGML to HTML and give the positive and negative aspects of each. Although the book is geared towards SGML/HTML implementations, it also gives a good description of SGML (in particular DTDs). I recommend Using SGML to anyone who needs to understand SGML and porting SGML documents to the Web. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The guided missal for SGML evangelists!
O.K., I'm biased, since I'm the Series Editor, but I really love this book. It is a non-technical book for generalist executives, and if it can't convince them that they are wasting big bucks and missing golden opportunities, they're not long for their jobs. The Amazon.com description says this book is for MIS and publishing professionals, and yes it is, but mainly for them to use as a weapon for persuading management. Product vendors and consultants will welcome it for the same reason. It's a guided missal for SGML evangelists! And it's full of cute graphics, pithy quotes, and genuinely fascinating anecdotes. In a word, it's more fun than any book about SGML has a right to be. If your enterprise produces documents, you are sure to benefit from $GML: The Billion Dollar Secret ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Old but good
I don't use XML very often. When I come back to it, it's like learning XML all over again. That's why I like Megginson's book. It's clear, detailed and gives all the basics needed for competent, flexible data design.
5-0 out of 5 stars For authors of dtds.
This is an excellent book for someone who is responsible for creating and maintaining dtds for large projects. The purpose of the book is not to teach the beginner what a dtd is. Rather it is meant to teach you to tell the difference between good dtd design and bad. The emphasis is on dtds that are for complex documents rather than those that are for transmission of database records. None the less, some of the material applies to both types of dtds. The author does not tell you what to do. Rather he tells you what issues you need to consider. There is a section that warns you of the problems that may arrise during the maintenance phase of a project. When a change is made to a dtd, there may be a backlog of legacy documents that were valid according to the old dtd but are no longer valid with the new one. I think this section of the book is a bit too methodical and long-winded. Even so the issue is crucial and needs some treatment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference on DTDs
This is not a book for beginners. There's a brief introduction to XML, but you need a fairly good grounding there before picking this book up. The author uses five industrial-strength model DTDs for documents as a basis for discussing the analysis and design of DTDs. These are briefly introduced, compared and contrasted. HTML is one of the five, not so much because it's a good example, but because it's widely known and used. The heart of the book is devoted to principles for analysis and design. These focus on the user -- ease of learning, of use, and of processing. Some desirable features tend to conflict, for example, there's a trade-off between simplicity and providing sufficient features to meet authors needs. Throughout the model DTDs are used to illustrate principled (or unprincipled) desgin. All in all, the book provides a good basis for reading, writing and understanding non-trivial, real-world DTDs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Still relevant!
I just purchased this book, I am also a web designer, although it is already outdated the theories presented by the author makes this book relevant to newer versions of HTML etc. This book is still a must fordesigners and a would be CLASSIC!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners
I bought this book after taking on the task of learning *gasp* all of the facets of web programming and design, hoping this would be currentinformation. A lot of it is. If you're still developing and writing HTML inthe 3.0 version. I was surprisingly let down by this part of the Unleashedseries, which is usually known for high quality info. Not that it isn't agood book, it's just out of date. ** Wondering how to get money back now**.. My advice.. keep looking. This one is just not current enough to beuseful for so much of what's new now. Sorry Mr. Stanek, et al.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
This is a really good book to introduce SGML.Also, especially now that SoftQuad is out of the SGML web browser business, and no longer provides its Panorama SGML Netscape browser plug-in, the copy of Panorama Proincluded on the CD that comes with the book is worth more than the price ofthe book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best practical intro to the details of SGML
As someone who makes a living dealing with SGML, I can't recommend this book highly enough for anyone who has to get into the details of the language. The SGML Handbook is the Bible, but it's rather short on examples(ahem). On the other hand, among books for acquiring serious SGMLunderstanding on one's own, Parseme 1st has been, for me, the most usefulby a mile. I think this is because it can be read either straight through,as a textbook, or in bits and pieces, as a reference. It's extremelywell-organized, and any time you want a precise explanation of CONREF ormarked sections but don't want to get distracted from the business at hand, there it is. Read more
