2-0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners butgood reference ...
This book is not for those just starting out in assembly language programming. This was basically my first time programming in assembly and this book was not a big help.It only skimmed the surface giving a general description of all the components of the 68HC12 microcontroller with no concrete examples to help visualize what was going on.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to Subversion
I was asked to research Subversion for use at work. After reading online manuals, I decided to purchase this book because it seemed pretty comprehensive.Indeed, it is very good at describing how to set up repositories, how to use it in day to day operations, how to administer it, etc.It even explains how to set it up for use through the Apache web server. After reading the book, I became the Subversion expert in the office.A lot of times, a person becomes the de facto expert simply because they have a miniscule amount of knowledge about something. This was different, though.I truly had a good understand of the topic.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to Subversion and version control
While the book title indicates that this is a book on the Subversion Version Control software system the author has chosen to provide a more thorough background and cover such topics as why use version control and how to use it best in a software development environment. If you are already familiar with version control software you will be pleasantly surprised to find that the author not only details how to use it to its greatest benefit but also includes information on its limitations and workarounds for specific situations.
5-0 out of 5 stars Subvert your development process!
This is a straightforward book on a straightforward topic. Subversion is an open-source version control (VC) system conceived as a replacement for CVS. While improving on CVS in a number of ways, it nonetheless feels comfortable and familiar to CVS users. Furthermore, because it avoids some of CVS's worst "gotchas", it's easier for VC novices to learn. Nagel writes this book for both of these audiences in a plain, easy to read style.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too shallow to be helpful
Mechatronics is the synergistic combination of mechanical engineering ("mecha" for mechanisms), electronic engineering ("tronics" for electronics), and software engineering. The purpose of this interdisciplinary engineering field serves the purposes of designing and controlling advanced hybrid-systems. This textbook is widely used in classes on mechatronics, but I find it much too shallow to be helpful. It is a good introduction to what mechatronics is, but past that point mechanical engineers will not be enlightened about electronics, as electronics engineers will not be enlightened about mechanics. Also, in my opinion, this book has more of a technician's handbook feel about it than it does that of an engineering text. If you are a mechanical or electronics engineer that really wants to learn about this fascinating field, might I recommend "Mechatronics: An Integrated Approach" by De Silva. It has the content you need to do analysis and design of mechatronic systems. I see Amazon does not show a table of contents for this book, so I do that here for the purpose of completeness:

4-0 out of 5 stars From an Industrial Practitioner of Industrial Process Control
This book is an excellent option for students taking their first course in Control systems. The topics are covered in a clear way, with many examples, and illustrations.
4-0 out of 5 stars Modern Control Systems
So far this book has done a good job of explaining some of the key concepts used to design contol systems. The book was obtained in apporximately the condition that was stated by the seller. It did however have scratches on the front cover.Overall it was a good purchase.
4-0 out of 5 stars Its a good text but not a "Nise" text
This is a very good text and I would recommend it to students BUT if the Nise text is available then it is a better choice in my opinion. This text however is a very close second.I have both texts and have them as references in work quite often. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A very concise, to-the-point text.....
This is an exhaustive text on practically every known technique used in practical error correction/detection. Every individual technique is outlined in a seperate chapter, with a lot of stress on the practical implementation issues, though it does go heavy on the computational nuances at some places.2-0 out of 5 stars Beginners... Don't waste your money
In contradiction to an earlier post which expressed this was a good bookfor beginners, I would highly recommend beginners and those with desire forpractical implementation to buy Lin and Costello's book. This book lacks inthe quality and quantity of its examples. It may serve as a good referencefor the more theoretically motivated person (e.g., those in the academicpublishing community) but if you want to own just one book, don't get thisone.

3-0 out of 5 stars Well written by already outdated
The book is very well written specially as an introductory book. However, some important derivations & discussions are missing. Twoexamples:(1) there is a whole chapter on BCH and Reed Solomon decodingwithout the derivation of the Berlekamp-Massey decoding algorithm, not evenin the appendeix. (2) When discussing different decoding algorithm, noeffort is spent in quantifying the complexity of different algorithms. So,the reader has to take the author's word that algorithm X is simpler thanalgorithm Y. Current hot topics such as Soft decoding of BCH and ReedSolomon codes is not discussed, except for the traditinal erasure decodingalgorithm. Similarly, iterative decoding is not discussed; instead we havethe outdated Fano and Stack algorithms that are usually covered in olderbooks. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good things come in small packages
Prime example of good things always coming in small (but expensive!) packages. In my opinion, this is the first book you buy if you want to learn about the 8051. It's well worth the price as it will always be part of your technical book collection. The author's academic style of presenting frequent "questions and answers" works for me. The book well deserves a five-star rating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise and informative
This book contains almost everything you need to know about the architecture and functionality of the 8051 microcontroller. MacKenzie does a very good job of keeping the book informative, but does not overwhelm the reader with theory or history. He concentrates significantly on the functionality and practicability of the 8051. The 8051 assembly language is included.5-0 out of 5 stars very useful

5-0 out of 5 stars Very nice book on digital control theory
This book is a very nice one among those on the same topic. It covers all theory that we should know about digital control in addition to a neat review of continuous control. Besides, it provides insight for understanding real systems along with Matlab examples and good problems. The way the authors wrote the book is clear and and in turn they offer the reader a pretty good and comprehensive approach. I recommend it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Engineers
I'am primarily a VLSI design engineer who is working on a product involving digital control. The book by Franklin and co. helped me get off to a quick start. It has a lot of practical examples which will be useful to engineers. It teaches the underlying theory , proposes a method to solve problems and also gives the appropriate MATLAB commands. However , personally I'am not able to get a solid grasp of the material by reading this book alone. For a more complete and rigorous coverage I recommend Discrete Control by Benjamin Kuo.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mr Jones reviews
Generally an excellent book with many worked examples.Unfortunately there seem to be a few irritating errors. One error concerns section 13.3.1.The cost function in this example is set for a bandwidth of 1Hz.This is also indicated in Figure 13.70.However, the parameters a,b given in Figure 13.71 (and those found by the search algorithm) are correct for a bandwidth value of 10Hz. Incidentally, the third edition (student edition) of the book seems to be made of thinner paper than the second edition. I feel the book makes rather too much of quantisation effects and sample rate selection. It might be better to replace these chapters with a new chapter on model predictive control. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good tutorial of basic control system
This is a really good book that simplified control system for the real world. Most text spend too much time on theory and analysis and end the discussion with a bunch of equations and graphs without explaining how to implement the design. This book covers both analog and digital control, and lets you download a software from the author's web site. This software, ModelQ, lets you play with various parameters so you can see how the system behaves when it is not optimized.5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on modern control systems
This book is a great guide to problems and solutions for modern control systems. Many text will have page after page of formulas with little link to the real world of control system design. Mr. Ellis provides answers to the problems faced by todays engineers.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for practicing engineers!
George Ellis does a great job of bridging the gap between academia and industy in Control System Design Guide 2nd Edition. This book gives the practicing engineer the information necessary to put into practice much of the theory that he/she learned in the university. The book primarily focuses on motion control and modeling of motion systems. If you are working on a control system and would like to make sure you get the performance you need, you should buy this book. ... A recommended book for those who have previous assembly language experience and wish to get to know details relating to the 8051 microcontroller. While the internal architecture of the chip is covered in detail, external hardware and peripheral interfacing is not.Only the basic 8051/31 is covered, with little mention of the other variants available. There are extensive listings in the text, covering routines for handling keyboards and displays, as well as timing loops and communications. A large, clear typeface ensures that all of the listings are completely legible. The layout and presentation of the book is excellent, with a consistent, unambiguous style used throughout. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of Trees!
This book is not for anyone. It is such a shame when you spend over $100 for something that will absolutly contribute nothing to you. I really did try to use this book, I just can't seem to find one full paragraph that I feel that I have actually learned something. The author begins his book, like he's already given you 10 previous introduction chapters. He feels he owes no explanation for anything, no real effort to make you understand or learn something. just a story teller with a bunch of equations, diagrams and solutions with no effort to to get anything across. I wonder exactly why this author felt he had to write this book.If it's because he wanted to contribute his knowledge, then he is surely a very bad teacher.I don't mean to cause any harm to the author, but I feel the obligation to warn anyone who is considering to buy this book for the sake of learning anything.Too bad they had to cut down trees to publish this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderfully written book on an important topic
Database concurrency control and recovery is one of pinnacles of computer science. An amazing collection of models, theoretical results, and implementation techniques enable thousands of users to simultaneously pound on a large database implemented on unreliable disks and networks, with full confidence that their data will be correctly stored. This book tells how this miracle is accomplished.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very Very Good
Exceptionally clear writing.Encyclopedic in its coverage of transactions.Anyone dealing with transactions (not just DB developers) would find this a very valuable resource. If you need a book on transactions, this should be your first choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for serious DB professionals
Tradicionally, the 'transaction' concept is always discussed at the RDBMS classes in the University. But this book goes FAR BEYOND this wide known implementation; with a solid math foundation (some math required, specially set theory and algorithms ) it shows you there are a lot of 'real-life' transactions that requiere some formal methods for defining their implementation.Read more

I was hunting for a single book which covers the area of signals and systems, communication theory, design (transforms related to these topics) using MATLAB (I have a student version 5.0).Every topic is wellillustrated with MATLAB programs along with the associated terms, definitions and the mathematical details along with figures for propervisualization. This book an excellent supplement to standard textbooks inthese areas. The presentation is crisp and clear. I experienced the"joy of understanding" while using this text with the software.GRAB A COPY AND UNDERSTAND THE WORLD OF TRANSFORMS! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book for the beginners
This is a really good book for the beginners to understand the timing verification in ASIC flow. There are not many books in this area which explain things clearly. Most of them get lost in the syntax and modules of coding. 90% percent of ASIC design is done with synopsys tools and book authors tell more about the tool syntax than why they are there. This book has minimum of tool syntax. It is SIMPLE and that is its greatest quality. Most people who have reviewed the book have given good ratings. The one that is bad must be from an experienced person. This book is not for an expert in this field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful
A clearly written, concise, and very helpful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must-have" book for practicing ASIC engineers
The book has detailed information on timing issues of ASICs and FPGAs, such as pre and post layout timing analysis. Several comprehensive examples on timing analysis using different available STA tools makes the book apractical guide for verification engineers. The book also covers some RTLcoding examples for timing, however it is made solely for timingverification not a book for learning HDL languages, therefore trying tocriticize the programming part of the book as in previous review isirrelevant let alone trying to correct spelling. ...
