5-0 out of 5 stars Great Technical Book
This is a great book. It is very informative and very useful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent coverage, well written
I found this book to be both comprehensive and well written. It was recommended to me by a very experienced AIX user. I am much less experienced, but I also found the book very helpful- it has a good mix of information, and is presented in a logical, well formatted way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Techno shock
I used AIX in the mid 90's. I got pretty good at installations, SNA services, peripherals and applications. Since them I switched to HP/UX and moves from version 9 to 10 to 11; so I am familiar with today's systems.

I've worked with Midrange systems for over 25 years and I can tell you this is not a good book, it's a great book. If you're an iSeries or AS/400 administrator, you need this book. If you're a programmer on the iSeries, you need this book. If you're studying to prepare for IBM Certification as an AS/400 System Administrator, you need this book. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great COBOL tutorial
This book is written in an easy to read and understand format. A good refresher for anyone that needs it and will serve as a good future reference book. Very good simple examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mainframe Programmers Reference
As a longtime mainframe programmer I have used Murach books for the times when I need a quick reminder of what COBOL statement to use and how to use it. Mike Murach has recently published a new "Mainframe COBOL" book. The Murach books feature a paired page format that has statement syntax and notes on the right hand page and detailed descriptions on the left hand page. With this format the book is useful for both the "seasoned" programmer and the newbie just getting started in writing structured COBOL programs.A new COBOL programmer can get good detailed instruction on how a structured program is designed coded and tested, the veteran can quickly access information on statement syntax and usage.
5-0 out of 5 stars An easy-to-follow guide for anyone learning the ins and outs
The collaboration of COBOL experts Mike Murach, Anne Prince, and Raul Menendez, Murach's Mainframe COBOL is a tutorial, guide, and reference especially for anyone charged with developing or maintaining COBOL programs. Explicit examples and sample code spell out COBOL syntax in the clearest possible terms, and much of Murach's Mainframe COBOL is divided into individual sections that teach the reader how to complete any given specific task, such as "how to code select statements and FD statements" or "how to join data from two or more tables". An easy-to-follow guide for anyone learning the ins and outs of COBOL.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great AS/400 beginner book
I not only bought the book, but I use it as a text book for the AS/400 Operations Classes that I teach.Material is placed in the correct order and explained in simple terms that are easy to follow. The authors also provide access to Powerpoint Presentations for each chapter - these are also wonderful. For the new user this is the best book to buy - or if you are studying for the IBM professional operator exam - this book also contains the right information to accomplish that goal. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I would like to see this book updated
Great book but needs to be updated.

3-0 out of 5 stars While it's still a nice introduction, it has become dated
This 2nd edition of Cockroft's classic on Sun Performance Tuning was a step up from the somewhat meager meal served in its 1st edition. 1-0 out of 5 stars only if you're just starting out
After reading the other reviews I had high hopes for this book. The book is not geared to people that already have basic sysadmin skills. And in one case the book makes a rather dubious statement. They list a few ndd parameters and state "The other values should never be changed on a production system."Well, they left out tcp_ip_abort_cinterval. And they don't mention tcp_ip_abort_linterval at all which so far seems to be an undocumented Sun Microsystems parameter.A book about tuning should cover all the tunable parameters and explain cause/effect.Simply stating that you never change the other parameters without explaining why isn't why you buy a book on Performance and Tuning.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The power to create, modernize, and extend CICS applications
Together with the COBOL programming language, IBM's CICS (Customer Information Control System) has formed the most common set of tools for building customer transaction applications in the world of large enterprise mainframe computing.CICS is used by 470 of the Fortune 500 companies to process 20 billion transactions a day. Written by John Horswill & Members of the CICS Development Team at IBM Hursley, Designing And Programming CICS Applications introduces new users of IBM's mainframe (OS/390) to CICS features. Experienced users will learn how to integrate existing mainframe systems with newer technologies, including the Web, CORBA, Java, CICS clients, and Visual Basic; as well as how to link MQSeries and CICS. Whether developers have thousands of terminals or a client/server environment with workstations and LANs exploiting modern technology such as graphical interfaces or multimedia, Designing And Programming CICS Applications gives them the power to create, modernize, and extend CICS applications.A CD-ROM is included.

4-0 out of 5 stars excellent information resource on integrating CICS and web
For many companies, large or small, the mission-critical applications run in the CICS environment. The difficulty of opening up those business logicand data for access through web interface often comes from the fact thatthe mainframe programmers don't know much about the web technology whilethe new web guys usually know little about CICS. This book bridges the gapbetween the two camps, and provides step-by-step instruction on how toapply and integrate the different technologies including Java, MQSeries, etc. This book is a must-read for anyone responsible integrating CICS andweb interface. The only drawback is that this book focuses on OS/390, whilethere are many CICS applications running in other platforms such as OS/2. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for beginning/intermediate Cobol programmers
This book is a great resource for the beginning or intermediate Cobol programmer. Very clear explanations and abundant examples aid understanding. The authors favor a "hands on" approach which encourages the reader to try out the concepts in each chapter. The example code is included on the CD (along with the input files for the exercises) which is a great timesaver.Read more

This guy REALLY knows his stuff, and the book is so easy to follow.I have NEVER done assembly programming, and didn't know ANY of the syntax. After a couple of chapters, I was programming in it like I had been doing it for years. The way the author lays things out makes it a breeze to learn how to open up the world of 8051/8052.I *loved* the book, and I use it as a reference ALL THE TIME.

5-0 out of 5 stars Required Reading for all text workers
As the subject says, I'd consider this book required reading for everyone trying to express ideas in text. For example: I'm a professional software developer and have yet to get into a situation where I'd have to design a poster or similar thing, and yet, the principles Robin Williams explains in this book also apply in the context of software development as far as the layout of our source code is concerned. Design is everywhere, so you might as well learn the basics of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars NonDesigners and Designers get fueled
This is an extremely helpful book for anyone of any history in design.Back-to-the-basics design by an author that keeps it simple.Has a huge typography section, as well as some humor (a rare find in these type of books), and a lot of learning without the struggle.Buy it, read it, and add it to your library.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a very thourough refernce book
I was looking to buy one good, comprehensive reference book re: SQL/400. This is not it. Too basic, with limited examples. Most functions are covered with one paragraph descriptions, with the whole book coming in askinny, soft-covered, and under a half inch thick.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good reference guide for SQL commands
This is the only book that I have found which provides reasonably comprehensive coverage of the SQL capabilities which have been introducedon the AS/400 since V4.It provides a good reference for the AS/400 syntaxof functions such as CASE, CAST, and various date functions that aren'tcovered will on other books that I have seen. This book is better as areference tool than as an introductory tutorial.
