4-0 out of 5 stars A really good PHP introduction book
First off, this book is completely useless to you if you have do not have adequate OOP programming background. It jumps around different topics and does not really explain why things are arranged a certain way. This book pretty much assumes you have knowledge of either C, C#, Java techniques - which makes PHP extremely easy to understand. If HTML is all you have under your belt, this is probably a terrible book to buy.
5-0 out of 5 stars 37 Chapters, 3 Books in one, and a must have desktop reference.
This is as it states for the Novice to the Professional and that is completely true.
5-0 out of 5 stars The only PHP and MYSQL book you'll need!
This book is geared for three types of readers I believe (a rarity among books). First are people who have no experience in programming or web development whatsoever, the second are people who have worked in other languages whether be on the desktop or the web, the third type are people who already have some basic PHP and/or MYSQL experience and want to further their knowledge into intermediate topics. How can a book accommodate so many types of readers? Well, being slightly over 800 pages helps and also this book is very well written and organized and focuses on all the important topics.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very basic
Good for a beginning administrator but that is about. I almost bought this book for the Drupal stuff. But it was just way to basic. I was looking for more information on the internals and how things worked not a how-to for the novice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for the beginning developer
I bought this book mainly for the Drupal section but the entire book is done quite well. The Drupal section is excellent and really walks you through everything from installation to modules to maintenance. The Themes section could have been a little more in-depth.
5-0 out of 5 stars Like Having A Guru Watching Over Your Shoulder
When I picked up this book I knew what phpBB was (my main reason for getting the book), but the other two applications were foreign to me. So, let me start off by briefly pointing out what each application is and does:

Wow- I love the book but especially the CD. I bought the book, took a couple days to cram, practiced on the test samples, took the actual exams over three days, and passed all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
Am teaching myself QuickBooks for my husband's carpentry business, and this book is very helpful. The QuickBooks tutorials are great, but without this book, which is specific to carpentry, it would be much more difficult.I recommend getting the book before you start setting up accounts in QuickBooks. It even comes with a CD for a sample company and estimator program.

5-0 out of 5 stars Introducing contractors to an exceptionally comprehensive understanding of the computer-based programming system
Enhanced with an accompanying CD-ROM, the Contractor's Guide To QuickBooks Pro 2006 by the team of contractors, accountants, and QuickBooks Pro experts Karen Mitchell, Craig Savage, and Jim Erwin is an in-depth, "user-friendly" guide to coordinating and knowledgeably approaching using the software programming of QuickBooks Pro in building construction contract development. Introducing contractors to an exceptionally comprehensive understanding of the computer-based programming system, QuickBooks Pro 2006 guides readers through QuickBooks Pro 2006's national estimator, an easy-to-use program with over 100 pages of construction cost and estimating data for general contractors; the Job Cost Wizard which swiftly converts the National estimates into QuickBooks Pro estimates for ease in creation of invoices and track job costs; as well as a collection of blank construction forms for customization and use with customers and subcontractors. QuickBooks Pro 2006 is very strongly recommended for its concise and thorough coverage of the often difficult dealings of construction contract estimates and bids.

4-0 out of 5 stars MBA Text
This book was required reading for an MBA class. The simplicity of the technical explanations, as well as the simple diagrams make it an easy book to understand. There are a few places where I wish the author would delve a bit deeper, on the topic of security as one example.Overall though, a good book for those who need a basic understanding of internet technology.

4-0 out of 5 stars a good book to start if you are scared.
The author is one of the "founding fathers" of the internet, he does explain basic concepts clearly. Unfortunately, he doesn't have any sense of humor. The book reminded me a conversation between an old-fashioned professor and his grandkids. Also, some material is outdated in 2005, (e.g. there is a lot of pages devoted to the bulletin board system, and no mention of instant messaging.)

5-0 out of 5 stars You're no "dummy" but new? This one's for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars A little dated, but the best general T-1 book available
I teach a college course called T-1 Network Design for which this is the textbook. I have been a practicing professional with T-1 circuits for more than 15 years, and IMHO, this is the best general T-1 textbook on the market. It's getting a little dated, but still not bad.

5-0 out of 5 stars No DSL in the subtitle--good book!
This book was an excellent reference for learning about the T-1's we began working with at my job.Another reviewer stated that the subtitle promised DSL, but NOWHERE in the title does it mention DSL.He is probably confusing DSL with DS3 which are vastly different circuit types.I recommend this book, you can't go wrong with it if you really want to learn how T-1's work.

2-0 out of 5 stars Interesting material, but not practical
For somebody trying to actually use T1 in their network, this book is not helpful. Most of the book is given over to theoretical explanations of the engineering details that led to the development of T1.While interesting, these details are often presented in a disjointed way without the necessary context of how everything fits together to move bits. The lack of context makes it much less helpful as a reference for network engineers who must support T1 links in their networks.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Old Hat
To me, this book was a disappointment. I had expected much more in the way of integration between PostgreSQL and PHP. Some of the questions that I had expected an answer for, was like: What is considered 'best practice' as to how to interface with PostgreSQL from PHP? How to write reusable queries?
5-0 out of 5 stars Beginning PHP Not Beginning Programming
I read this edition after Gilmore's earlier book on PHP and MySQL, so let me quote the pertinent parts of that review and augment with appropriate comments:
5-0 out of 5 stars Definitive Reference
If you are like me, you have probably dabbled in PHP and MySQL driven CMS solutions, simply because that combination is so prevalent. I consider myself to be primarily a front-end developer / graphic designer, and am not terribly interested in knowing every server-side language there is, so long as whatever I am using can get the job done. Suffice it to say that while I am eager to learn and expand my horizons, my exposure to more than LAMP has been limited.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful Book
This is the fourth Tim Gray book and second Jon Canfield book I have bought and read. While this book treats many of its various subjects in much less detail as Tim and Jon do in their other books I still found it useful. The section on creating digital slideshows was particularly helpful and all of the other subject matter is covered at least a summary level, providing good review and synopsis of the more detailed treatments in their other books.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very Basic
This is an excellent book for anyone needing the basic on producing web content or printed media. However, I found it not up to the standards I have come to expect from Tim Grey.It borrows from a lot of his other work and does go into great detail on how to produce web files or printed media. It falls well short of providing content on Showing and Selling Images. While there is certainly an art to these two processes, I had hoped to see some examples of how to incorporate these into my current procedures. There really was no content on these subjects.
2-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't deliver the level of content and information required
This book was a huge disappointment. It's content is weak in almost all sections with much of the information available from either the Internet or you local photo lab. I didn't find it very useful at all and I'm even tempted to send it back.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is for people who doesn't know anything about pc
take me 15min to browse thru the bok and I pratically didn't learn anything new.If you are new to PC and want to burn your first CD, you may learn more by just tinkering with the software you already got. This book does not go into any detail on the stucture of the file format, TOC or anything. It touches many topics and then go to the next.Read the help file or manual on your burning software and that's pretty much what this book is about. Here's some examples: HFS (file format): "short for Hierarchical File System. This is the file system used on the Mac. Although it's being slowly phased out, HFS is still important in the mac world."What kind of crap is this!?There are a couple of paragraphs on mixed mode disc and then it give tons of reason NOT to use it.4-0 out of 5 stars Everything I needed
I give this book 4 stars. It has everything you need to know to installand record music CDS.I also learned more about making data CDS in thisbook than anything else I've read yet. A good pick.

4-0 out of 5 stars clear language and objective assessments
While we are well on our way through 2005, this book still has merit for many readers. Its attraction is the clear language and objectivity of its assessments of the myriad types of hardware and software associated with personal computing. Buttressed by technical explanations of new features, like command queuing, or how to set up a tri monitor display.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good Catch-up but now out of date
Yep, it's a recap of the last years magazine articles. Not bad if you need to get a clue what's up with the most recent pc hardware. It will explain the difference between the north bridge and the south bridge and other tech stuff you need to know.Lot's of reviews of last year's products (now available for great deal prices).I'd buy the latest one, the 2006 buyer's guide.Like reading a whole year's worth of the magazine.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lots of errors make this a waste of time and money
Written by the chief editor of Maximum PC, a magazine devoted to modding and overclocking but not particularly good at it, this is a very poorly written and edited "book" that's basically just a compilation of equally poorly written and edited articles from the magazine's 2003 issues.Published last summer, it's already out-of-date.But that's not its true vice; the problem is 1) it has a lot of factual errors, and 2) it doesn't give you critical comparisons you need to choose among the products in each category.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, an opinion on hardware
I love this book. Buy it. If you want to put together a PC buy this book. It provides practical advice about hardware options. I really appreciate that. It's why I subscribe to Consumer Reports. So I appreciate that type of advice here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect
Not only is it below average in cost, it is by far the best ASP book I have ever seen. Every topic has a VBScript and JScript example. It is much more than a reference manual. This is the way EVERY computer language book should be written.

4-0 out of 5 stars great reference if you already know basic ASP
I use this book all the time. In fact, so much that I hardly ever put it back on my bookshelf. It is a great reference for anyone who basically knows ASP but needs to occasionally look up how some part of how ASP works. I was self-taught ASP, and just learned how to do different things as I needed them. This book's biggest strength is that it shows you ASP in the big picture of the object model, which I never really grasped until I got this book. 5-0 out of 5 stars Much More Than Just an ASP Reference
Wrox is selling itself short on this one.Not only is it a great reference for ASP (lots of good examples and explanations), there are also several equally good chapters on ADO, CDO, XML, XLST, ADSI, MSMQ and Transactions.I've used it as a reference for these other topics as much or more than I've used it as an ASP reference. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars For anyone charged with the responsibility for marketing
Now in a fully updated and expanded fifth edition, Jan Zimmerman's Marketing On The Internet: Seven Steps To Building The Internet Into Your Business is "must" reading for anyone charged with the responsibility for marketing their business's products or services in today's highly competitive, rapidly evolving marketplace. This outstanding, "user friendly" how-to book will instruct the reader on passwords for accessing private web sites, the latest Internet market news, online marketing resources, and more. Whether a novice entrepreneur launching a business on the Internet, or a seasoned corporate manager seeking to incorporate the Internet into an overall marketing strategy, Marketing On The Internet may well prove to be the single most important research reading they can do to ensure their company's success.

5-0 out of 5 stars Knowledge is Power
In my opinion, Marketing on the Internet by Jan Zimmerman is a book that every online business should read. The reason I think the book is of such high quality is because of three reasons, the organization, the graphs, and the ease of reading.First, the organization of the book is well laid out. There are bullet points to list each topic that will be discussed and then after the list, the chapter goes into detail on each point. The chapters are also organized to take the reader from the basics of the information to a point where it's detailed, but not confusing.Furthermore, the graphs, statistics, and pictures help in making the points clear. When the book mentions a specific site and how the site had a characteristic that made it look better, a picture of the site usually followed the summary. As well as the pictures, there were graphs and statistics to show the percentages of various subjects like ethnicities and the number of hours a browser was used per week. The information from these demographics can helps the reader to think of ways to enhance his own online business. Finally, the book was easy to read and easy to comprehend. Most computer-related books are very difficult to read because of the acronyms and the technical words used. This book kept the paragraphs short which kept my attention and didn't go into an extension of detail like other books. In conclusion, Marketing on the Internet is a book that can make your business soar to the top.

1-0 out of 5 stars Outdated information for you to buy a computer in 2005
Don't depend on this 2005 edition of Buying a Computer FOR DUMMIES to help you to buy a computer in 2005.This book has a lot of outdated information and missed a lot current information. For example:
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent but necessarily incomplete
Okay, this is a little tough to explain. This is an EXCELLENT guide for people who need to buy a new home computer or laptop. But it by itself will not be enough to guide those people through the process smoothly.5-0 out of 5 stars Demystifying the Sacred Computer
Having looked at others, I have to agree that I found Dan Gookin's book to be by far the most helpful in preparing me to buy a computer for the first time. Sure, he didn't mention brand names, but there's plenty of information available from many sources to make that decision after you understand the basics, which he rightly concentrates on. As for Gookin's humor, that is a matter of taste, but I see no contradiction in being humorous, even silly, while at the same time being very serious and knowledgable about this subject. His humor helped put me at ease in a topic that is often scary for the beginner. We need awe and reverence, but they belong to God. ... Read more
