Struck by its simplicity and completeness!
I love this book. I am struck by its simplicity. How can a book be so simple, yet so clear in delivering the message, in a topic that is considered to be complicated? Computer architecture is not easy, but with the help of this book I was able to build a very solid foundation when I took the course. And even though it is an introductory book, I still refer to it in more advanced courses and related topics.

The usefulness of a text book often depends on the professor...
I found this book to be one of the most clearly written texts on the subject of computer architecture(as opposed to the terse, cryptic Astrom and Wittenmark books for control systems, for example.)
Nice and Simpe Introductory Book
I have three of M. Mano's books and this one is the one I've liked the most. I found the author's exposition of the material good on average. I'm using this book for self-study. The book provides a nice overview of computer architecture by focusing on the basic concepts in manner that is not dependent on a particular real-life architecture. Read more

Good reference on Linux subsystems, not a book for starters
This book is not for Linux (kernel) newbies but for those who already know their way around the kernel and seek detailed info on certain parts of it. This book has some good overviews on different subsystems of the Linux kernel. Some sections, like USB, have been expanded since the second edition of this book. I would have liked to see a section on the new 2.6 scheduler.
Not useful for a normal coder looking to learn Unix drivers.
If you are trying to learn how to write Linux Device drivers from scratch, this is probably not the book for you. I believe I am somewhat C/C++ savvy, and I expect sample code that is less than 10 lines of code to compile correctly.
Don't even read the free online version
This book was so badly written that I just couldn't help writing my first review on Amazon. I NEVER bothered writting reviews.

Don't bother buying this book
I am a high-tech marketing manager and an adjunct professor. From both the real-world business side as well as the academic side, I found this book to have little value. It spends page after page on general issues regarding Internet Marketing, and never gets to anything that could be used or implemented in the business world. Topics are explained without giving specific details as to how to implement the Internet Marketing idea. A very specific example is a description of viral marketing which the author refers to as "Creating a Wave." The short section goes on to say that free media, publicity and word of mouth are important. Of course they are. But how do you get them? I feel sorry for the students that are required to purchase this book. I guess they'll have to learn Internet Marketing on the job. I'm glad I only paid $10 for this book used instead of the $90+ list price.

Very good, but dated
This is a classic. One of the most serious earlier works on the topic. Professor Hanson brought a very solid theoretical framework to Web marketing. The book came at a time when we finally all wanted to get more rigouros with the "New Economy". I perused it again recently for a seminar I am giving, and it is still an excellent reference book. I would give four stars to an updated edition. I don't know if they are planning it.

A second edition is urgently needed
I used the first edition in one of my e-commerce courses. While the book migth still deserve 3 stars it is very much dated and my students had to do much additional research in the net to round most of the topics. ... Read more

Interesting, informative, and more than just schematic after schematic
I expected this book to be much more technical than it was. Rather than a collection of schematics and wiring diagrams, DerEngel combines many personal stories with the results of his work. It's quite an interesting read, although I don't know if the book will make hardware hackers out of anyone. Some people may be able to hack their modems with the ready-to-use tools the author discusses, but most people probably aren't going to want to potentially destroy their modems by cracking open the case and messing with the circuit board components. Most of the discussion takes it for granted that the reader is already be familiar with basic electrical engineering and Radio Shack. The tools he uses are Windows programs, so unix users may need to find similar tools to follow along with the hacks.

Very Good
Like most good books dedicated to buying and selling on eBay this book fits that category nicely. It is aimed at the more serious seller and goes into several deep layers on techniques and strategies to make your activities lucrative and profitable. In all I like this book because it does contain a lot of useful information at whatever lengths you decide to take you're your eBay activities. If you want to really get out there in the trenches, this book will accommodate that ambition.

A real "love-hate" relationship......
That's exactly what this book offers. You'll absolutely love the information the author offers, but you'll also hate yourself for not adding it to your eBay reference library sooner. The information discussed, and revealed, in this book will make you think, explore and create what you have wanted all those months you finally decided to be a successful eBay seller.

DVD Demystified is good book to understand what's the state of the art of optic storage and digital video.

Definitive guide for DVD authors
I needed to learn about creating a DVD, and most of the recommendations that I got steered me towards DVD Demystified by Jim Taylor. The book, and accompanying DVD, do exactly that - it demystifies the DVD media.
Works for me!
Taylor's been the man for DVD sooo many years now and this latest revision is the first I've purchased. The depth of detail and fullness of the technical specification information is fantastic and what one would hope from a classic-staying-fresh.

A good summary of storage virtualization
This book describes the basics of modern storage virtualization at an introductory level. The reader should have a basic technical background but does not need know much about storage. There are fourteen chapters each of which covers one aspect of storage. Topics include: host, server and fabric based virtualization. Additional topics such as various types of file systems as well as protocols such as Fibre, NFS, iscsi are also covered. The main drawback is the lack of details. Each topic is covered in about ~10-15 pages which is barely enough to scratch the surface. Therefore anyone who is seriously interested in a particular topic will have to find other material to really dig in. On the positive side, the presentation is simple enough that the book may be read rather quickly. I would recommend it to anyone who is getting into storage and wants a summary of all the major topics in an easy to read book.

Clark gives straightforward explanations of the issues involved in storage virtualisation. He shows that there are various ways to present to an operating system or user data storage capacities. In a functionally abstract manner, that permits a modular architectural design. This abstraction is crucial in giving a simple and logical view of the memory or disk. So that the applications level developer need only deal on a very simple level with read and write to the medium.
Very well written intro to storage virtualization
A concise and well written book on storage virtualization. Starting with explanation of file meta data and storage meta data the author uses good illustrations to dive reasonably deep and explain the concepts behind each mode of virtualization starting from server down to switch, appliance and array-based virtualization.The book is not wordy nor does it waste time on pointless rambling on the history of storage networking etc..I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in truly understanding the concepts behind this upcoming technology. ... Brief but informative overview
"Iran: The Essential Guide to a Country on the Brink" is a brief but detailed survey of the history of Iran. While the book itself is not especially short-it's 240 pages-the chapters are very brief, some being a single page. Just about every topic is covered, from Cyrus the Great and the Achaemenian Dynasty to the current president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and everything in between. This includes Iran's people, culture, resources, and politics. The chapters are arranged alphabetically which makes it a quick and easy reference. Being encyclopedic in nature, the book is relatively objective and does not seek to support or condemn Iran or it's people. Those with any significant foreknowledge of the region would probably not find much new here, but as an introduction, I would not hesitate to recommend this book.

Good overview of storage networking
This is one of the best books I've encountered in many years.What I like about it:
Succinct overview of Storage Networks
A very good translation of the german text. There are a few areas where the translation falters but overall excellent. This is not an implementation book. It's meant to be a general overview of the Storage Network universe. The authors focus on Fibre Channel SAN which is still dominant in large corporations and gaining popularity among mid level companies. The book does a good job of explaining the plus/minus of all the competing standards as well as giving an infrastructure map of each of the technology setups. The one and only COM/COM+ Reference......
It is normal for me to use allot of different books for reference, but in terms of the global based COM technologies that number it maximum. For example, I would usually use for reference regarding COM the book by Don Box, Essencial COM. On the other way if I was working with ActiveX I normally had hanging around Understanding ActiveX and OLE, Visual C++ ActiveX COM. And finally if I was working on COM+ usually my I would grab anything I could get my hands on and for DCOM, my favourite pet was the DCOM Unleashed!! COM/COM+ programmer's essencial

Excellent Primer
As a storage novice coming at storage with anetworking background, I found this book to be an excellent introduction to storage.The book is particularly effective at illustrating how intertwined storage infrastructure can be (you can solve the exact same problem with fundamentally different approaches - application, volume, array-based solutions).Networking is relatively straightforward by comparison.

Informative, but a bit dry
Barker and Massiglia have come up with that rare beast in this book: something which is so informative you dare not put it down, but on a topic that is so boring that you dare not pick it up.I tend not to build that many SANs these days, and restrict myself to maybe 30 a week or fewer, but I still find that this is enough to make me want not to think about them outside of this.If you buy this, make sure it's bacuse you enjoy building SANs.

good TOC but no content
I bought this book because I needed to figure out what problems SAN can solve for me, and how exactly to solve them in a cost-effective way using products available today. I found no answers to my questions in this book. Read more
