Fantastic Book for a Unix guy like me
For a Unix guy like me, command line tools (and scripting) is essential. This book is truly fantastic for that. It has stuff that I could not find even with google. Very well organized and well-presented.

EXCELLENT RESOURCE!
Stanek's Command-line Pocket Consultant is hands-down the best on the subject. It's clear, concise and packed with useful details. It covers just about everything I've ever wanted to do from the command-line, and has extremely detailed information on some areas (such as printers, performancing monitoring, and advance hard disk config) covered nowhere else. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

A nice compact reference to the Windows command-line.
If you use the Windows command-line then this book should be very usefull. The most usefull section is the batch script reference. It can be a real time saver when you writing a batch script and you cant remember how to do something. This book also contains the most usefull commands you will use when you are maintaning computers and servers. One thing I dont like about this book is that it containsinformation about using the command-line for Windows Server 2003, I think this should be left out and put in a seperate pocket consultant. ... Good work
This is a great reference guide to use when programming on Windows CE. The examples are good to use as templates. The author is good at explaining and for sure the information covered in the book is relevant. There were several pages in the book that hadn't been printed, but luckily the whole book also came in digital format on a CD with the book. The book is quite thick but I can't say there is any nonsense in it. Now I'm just waiting for an update to Windows Mobile 5.0. Hey Doughlas, get busy!
.net and CE
Looks can deceive (title). It's a good book to learn all (almost) about windows CE but it's a pitty that only the last chapter treats a small piece of the .net approach. So if you are interested in learning windows CE in using the last visual studio 2005 beta this isn't the book need !

Excellent book.
This book is awsome! This book is for someone that has a strong C++ background but does not have to have experience with the windows api in order to begin programming on a CE box. If you know the windows API a lot of this book might be review. The book also does not go into a lot of depth about the architecture of windows CE. It also only skims over sections about bluetooth, smartphone, pocket pc and other technologies that you may want to use on your ce box. Along with this book you will probably want a reference book specifically on Embeded studio and on whichever technologies you are using. For the price and the coverage this cant be beat. ... Palm Handheld,Fifth Edition
In general the book is well organized and lucid. It is easy to read and useful. The only drawback I found was that the Palm T/X is not covered.

Save a tree
Agree with the others, a well-organized, pretty, but no-depth, chitty-chatty "Dummies" rendition of the manual.For people who like reading about using technology, rather than people who are trying to solve a organizational problem. Read the PDF version of the manual and save a tree.

Don't waste your time.
I do not usually leave comments about purchases but this Johnson/Broida offering is so dismal it deserves a mention.You will be much better off with Palm's online documentation/help files and forget about wasting your money on this turkey.Truly a real disappointment.

Very good, but a bit dated
A good overview...lots of useful information. Just be aware that this was written for CE 3.0, and 5.0 is current, with 6.0 in Beta, so there are detail differences. Still, a good starting point, and I can't find any more current books on the subject. So if you need to learn to use the Microsoft Platform Builder to do Windows CE embedded sysgens, this is the only game in town.

Overpriced for out of date information
Book is out of date and is exteremly overpriced.Anyone who attends a DevConference receives more information that is upto date than what was covered in the entire book.Waste of time and money.

Too out of date to be of use.
This book was written in 2001 (as were most of the positive reviews for it here on Amazon.)It only covers up to Platform Builder and WinCE 3.0, which are now up to version 5.As a result, the how-to parts, as well as the references, are mostly useless.In fact, I'm not sure any of the sections are relevant or can be trusted since WinCE has changed so much.

How to Do Everything with Your IPAQ Oicjet OC
Excellent!As a new user of an older model IPAQ with NO documentation, this book got me up and running very quickly.

Lacking in Details
This book does a good job of telling you what your IPAQ can do but a very poor job of telling you how to do it.I wanted more information about how to set up my IPAQ to connect with the internet.The book told me it could be done and how wonderful it was, but lacked specific information about which screen to go to and how to actually make it work.
Only if you suffer from severe tech phobia
I bought this book based on highly favorable reviews here.I found this book to be a total waste of time and money. This book may be useful if you are a complete newbie, don't have access to an IT guy/gal and haven't a clue how to do a web search for info/tips. Read more

Good basis for productive development
In earlier versions of this work, I found Larry Roof's text and examples to be a very good foundation for VB programmers who are getting into the Windows CE/Pocket PC world.When Microsoft first released Visual Basic for the CE environment, it was a frustrating experience for developers.You were never quite sure which bits of code would work the same and which would not, and the online help and debugging tools were nowhere near the level of "regular" Visual Basic.Well, Microsoft has incrementally improved the product, but a good book on VB for CE is almost essential for any VB programmer who wants to work on the handheld systems.And Larry Roof's book meets that requirement. I agree that 'professional' is a stretch with the title.The material's scope is from beginner to intermediate.Also, because I am working with Windows CE 3 & Visual Tools 3, some of the information is clealy dated(time for the next version of the book).However, as an experienced VBdeveloper, new to the windows CE platform, the book was an excellent firststep.There are several books on windows CE, but few devoted to VB &CE.The reason is obvious -- VB tools for Windows CE 3 is very limited,and any serious application development will require C++.I recommend thisbook for VB developers new to the CE platform.Just don't expect to beable to run all the examples as is.

Visual Basic Windows CE Programming --- another review
I thought the book was very well documented with helpful examples. One of the other reviews was simply put "out of date". Concepts and ideas never go out of date, and this book is the first one with completeexamples covering topics which are directed at the type of product itsupports. I have not found any other book with the explicit subject matterof VB for CE development as this one. Too many bad raps for this book!
I had all but given up on CE after struggling with the miserable VB CE kit on and off for several years, till I opened up Burdick's book and tried several of his programs.I was astounded! They all worked flawlessly and I was off to a start with CE and C development.I'm by no means an expert at C but had no problems in following the code examples and getting some serious applications to work.I've looked at some other CE programming books but I really wouldn't be without this one.

where is the "how-to"
I recently had a chance to review this book. It's very normal. I've been doing WinCE for 4 yrs, can't find anything up-to-date in this book. Any WIN32 programmer will feel the same. It's more than a Programmer's Guide

Pocket PC: Visual Quickstart Guide
Trying to use the Dell manual left me frustrated but this book has been invaluable.Even things that were mentioned briefly or not at all in the manual, are outlined step by step in this book.

This book is now five years old. It has no information on any Palm device likely to still be out there. A waste of money.

Wait until the 3rd edition comes out as this book is too old. Dyszel is certainly no dummy!
Bill obviously knows the ins and outs of the Palm OS through and through and it really shows in this book. Extremely well written and does a great job of highlighting some of the strong points of the Palm OS. I especially found this book to be one of the funniest, if not THE funniest, of all the Dummies books I've read. Also having also purchased two other Palm OS books at the same time I bought this one, I can tell you this book is easily the best of the three. If you want a little more than the meat and potatoes the other Palm OS books out there offer then pick this book up. You'll be extremely glad you did, trust me! Outstanding. ... Read more

Pocket PC Game Programming
Excellent tutorial for becoming familiar with programming for the Pocket PC platform, but also for novices to windows programming in general. Harbour starts at the ground up, explaining the differences between the two in an easier to understand writing style. I have tried for years to grasp c++ programming after working with BASIC and countless other languages but for some reason could not. After working through the book, not only did I have a working, infinitely expandable 2D game engine for programming for PPC, but I had finally gained a much better understanding of the language.

A great book about C++ Pocket PC Game Programming
This is an easy read and it contains valuable game programming source code.This book makes getting into C++ game programming on the Pocket PC much easier than you would have imagined.The emBedded C++ version 3.0 is a little dated but the same code easily transfers to the new emBedded C++ Version 4!

All the basics of programming PDAs
While I do not currently write anything for PDAs, it is clear that the majority of the growth in the use of new computing devices will be in handheld devices. This will of course require an enormous amount of new software to be built. While the power of the handheld devices continues to grow, convenience, if nothing else, will demand that the size remains small. This will limit the size of the screen and the amount of memory available. Therefore, while it is possible to port software used on desktop platforms to handhelds, it is not an easy task and even in the best of circumstances, significant changes have to be made.
Review of "Java Development on PDAs"
So this book started well, with lots of sensible thoughts like making all the source code available for download to avoid long listings in the book itself. Although as I read through there still seemed to be a fair amount of code (e.g. p109 -113 is all code) but presumably this was still only the "critical" bits of code needed to understand thte points being made.Generally I thought the first three chapters of the book were very strong - the description of CDC, CLDC and MIDP left me feeling more certain about what they actually are: Do yourself a favor: Buy this book

Up-to-date complete reference
This is a complete reference for PalmOS PDAs. The form is a step-by-step walkthrough of each function. Each page is cut in half with text on one side explaining the screenshots on the other side of the page. The chapters go through each function from managing contacts, using the calendar, reading and writing email, to surfing the web and synchronizing with your Mac or Windows box. THIS IS NOT A BEGINNERS BOOK
Of all the Palm Programming books I have on my desk, I generally look at this book second for hints. Here are the Cons:- It is heavy on CodeWarrior (fyi.. I use CW) and if you haven't bought CW then don't buy this book either. Second, the book is getting somewhat dated. Third, if you want to dabble with Palm programming then I would say this book is not for you. On the Pro side: if you are going to be doing this for a living, the topics it covers are generally very useful and that's why I consider it good to have around.

Buy the Palm OS Programming Bible instead
This was the first book I bought on Palm OS programming and I wish it had not been. On the plus side it does a good job of explaining the basics of Codewarrior and it includes some good basic examples of programs. should be called CodeWarrior Palm Programming
Another book that pushes the "drag and drop" programming.Read more

Not for previous Palm or Pocket PC users
I purchased this book after being disappointed by the documentation that came with the HP iPAQ.I have finished the book in about 45 minutes and did not learn anything other than I could write over my notes in Transcriber without having to wait.It did not make me a PowerUser and able to do everything with my iPAQ.It seemed more like a manual for a Jornada that was formed into a book than anything. Covers Much Ground in a Concise Yet Friendly Style
If you want an excellent book to get you up and running with your Pocket PC, this is it.It covers everything from getting started, to using Pocket Outlook, to recommended software, to security and many other areas as well.Because the Pocket PC operating system is common to many PDAs, the fact that the HP brand is used as the model plays almost no bearing on the usefulness of the content.I have an iPaq and practically all the information was as applicable to it, as to the HP. Great starter book for Pocker PC users.

Outstanding Handbook
If the Pocket PC is the best companion for your desktop PC, then this book is the best companion for the Pocket PC. Written in a clear and concise manner this book is a helpful guide about the complete use of the many features the Pocket PC has. And do not think that because it is mainly wrote for the Jornada 54x users the content is overdue for the owners of the 56x, because this handbook brings an excellent beginning for the comprehension of both operative systems, and the full utilisation of their advantages.Read more

Worst of both worlds.
This book is unlike any other O/S book I've ever encountered; if I'm lucky I'll never meet another one like!Imagine an unholy blending of a typical O/S reference and "Ghost in the Machine" (the story of the development team for a Data General computer) and you'll have a feel for this book; it does justice to neither genre.Members of the design team describe various features of the O/S in their own words along with trivia about MS politics and lots of patting themselves on the back:"this is a cool thing we did". This approach produces a cluttered and not entirely coherent book.If you're expecting something like "Inside WindowsNT" you'll be sorely disappointed.

Don't expect too much from this book
I always buy the books on Amazon.com, because the review's are very helpfull. I only buy the book after reviewing it. But this time the reviewsmislead me. If you had bought "Inside" books from Microsoft Pressfor example, Inside ODBC, Inside COM, Inside OLE don't even compare thesebooks with Inside Microsoft Windows CE. Those books are GEMS, TOP OF THELINE. This book is like a story book. Lack of indepth technical stuff.Thesedays I am starting to learn PDA stuff. I expected this book to be something like Palm OS Companion guide which explains every thing about the OS.Even after paying for the book (Palm OS Companion is free) I am notsatisfied. I did not get my money's worth. Bottom line is don't buy thisbook if you are interested in the Insides of Windows CE OS (as this booksuggets).

completely useless
This book gives very, very little insite to anyone actually interested in using eMbedded Visual C++ to write in the Windows CE environment.The author gives one paragraph explainations of subjects and then goes into 10 page programs using tons of functionality that he refuses to explain. Pretty cool book in Windows CE programming
I bought the first edition right before the second edition came out.The second one has a lot more coverage of more contemporary topics and I liked it a lot better.There isn't an abundance of different examples available for developers but this book helps bridge the gap.If you are doing CE development, I think you'll appreciate this book. NO CD KEY FOUND WITH PRODUCT

Pocket Pcs for Dummies
This book was printed in 2002 and is SO out of date that it is really not worth having.Very disappointing!

A complete How-to-do-it for Pocket PC's
I picked up this book to help my decision between getting a Palm or a PocketPC and was blown away by the capability of this new class of shirt-pocket computing power.I've checked out all the features of the Casio pocket PC following this book, and it's totally comprehensive. This is the book that should have come with the computer. It covers every aspect of the built-in Microsoft Office suite, as well as the MP3 player functions, e-books, handwriting recognition (awesome!), GPS compatibility, remote web browsing, and on and on.This book sold me on Pocket PC's over a PDA, and for that I consider it worth the price. But it's also an easy to read reference manual for using all the capability that these little gems have to offer. ... Read more

Perfectly Useless
This book deals with older Palm Operating Systems; so old in fact, that my year-old T5 was way beyond it. It has a copyright from about 2000. If this was in a real bookstore, I owuld have been able to see this fact and avoid this out-of-date product.
A Good Basic Beginner's Book
Being a new Palm IIIxe owner, I was pretty excited about getting another user's manual that would help simplify and reveal the full potential of my PDA.This book makes finding the information relatively easy and it has agood reference section that directs you to third party software downloads. If you're looking for a good starter book that simplifies basic taskswithout having to search endlessly with the user's manual that comes withthe PDA, then this book is for you.Don't expect too much advancedinformation to be provided.The descriptions are easy to follow and havingthe spiral binding makes laying the book flat for reading a nice feature. A good book to have when spare time allows you to just sit back with yourPalm and learn basic operations.
