2-0 out of 5 stars Big Thick Book With Little Content: Beware!
I have more than 15 years of project management experience. I've read this and quite a few other PMP books from cover to cover. Most of the reviews on this page sound like a propaganda to me. This book gives you the impression that it's a big book and must be covering lots of material. But this, in my opinion, is not true. It's big due to the large font and because most of the space on each page is empty.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to study for the PMP!
I used this book along with two others. I took the exam before purchasing this book, and I did not pass, but after using this book, I passed with flying colors. The author organizes the material clearly and explains things very well. I wish I had purchased this book the first time!
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book and clear
The book is very clear and helps the end user understand all the terms. The online tutorial is good too. However it needed more "situational" examples. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Ecellent for covering SEO basics
This book is the best start to learning SEO. It covers all the SEO basics which may be all you need to get a decent listing. I'd say that the basics are 90% of rankings. My sites which I can't list due to the review policies enjoys about 5 keywords on page 1 of Google and Yahoo. It would have been a 5 star rating but I felt not enough changed from the prior revision.
5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE this book!
While in the process of working on my new website, I came across this book and ordered it right away based on other reviews. I was not disappointed. It's a must for anyone getting ready to launch a new site or anyone wanting to drive more traffic to their already built site. Even if you think you know a lot about keywords and SEO, this is an excellent buy. It did for me what a company specializing in SEO wanted to do for $8,000. I'm sure the SEO company would have provided an excellent service, but by reading this book, I've learned how to do it myself and will now know how to tweak my site in the future.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for Newbies
If you're up-to-date with all the latest and greatest this is mainly a review. However, if you're not completely familiar with the terms and usage of SEO this is a great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Frontpage 2003 Review
When I first purchased the Frontpage Software I should have bought this book at the same time, in fact they should actually be sold together. It is very well written and a very good guide once you are up and running.I would recommend this book to anyone who has a basic understanding of MS Office products.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible for a Help Book
This is a terrible book. I am a total novice in FrontPage and web page creation but have lots of experience in computers including programming years ago.
1-0 out of 5 stars I'm lost
I've never written a review before, but I'm so lost after reading this book that I had to warn others before they come down the same road.

4-0 out of 5 stars great book with new ideas
Very original with more incites than any other book about online poker. There is no guarantees with poker as you may know, and even less of a guarantee with online poker. But there are new straties and ideas to consider in this book. If you can still play online poker i strongly recommened this book

4-0 out of 5 stars Packed with good tips
I give this book a thumbs up.I enjoy reading poker books, but many of them have the same advice.I found this book to have plenty of new, exciting strategies and tips.

3-0 out of 5 stars AIN'T FOR NEWBIES!!
I've always resected the "Dummies" for their simplicity, however, this book is strictly for "near" or wannbe professionals!I do not reccommend this book for the people who want to build their own websites.

5-0 out of 5 stars exactly what I needed
this book was exactly what I needed to begin web design!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Primer
This book is a great starter if you want to learn how to design web pages. While it's not a step-by-step page building guide, it's an excellent source of ideas, theories and practical "how-tos" that will definitely get you going in the right direction. If you're interested in building your own site, you could also be interested in hosting your site after it's built.Check out the "Complete Guide to Web Hosting" on amazon. It's a complete kit with all software and instructions that will let you host your site on your own PC for free.I highly recommend both of these titles together. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars it's a little much
For learning how to program from scratch, i wouldn't recommend this book. It's to fast through javascript. Yet I haven't read all 1000 pages yet, that's what I've taken from it so far. Seems good for asp and stuff like that though.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great all-in-one, but too Microsoft-centric
This book overall is the best general introduction to website development technologies that I've found. I'm coming from the perspective of a professor who needed to teach HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and any server-side scripting language to my students. After deciding to use PHP, I loked for several appropriate books, and I did find numerous good options, but at the very most, any given book would only cover two of the technologies I needed. Thus, I would end up with at least three or four books that had way more than necessary and would cost up to $200 for one course.
1-0 out of 5 stars Deitel Considered Dangerous
I was unfortunately subjected to the second edition of this book during my graduate studies at DTU. In my opinion there's only one good thing to say about this book, and that is that it's the only book I've seen where you get a comprehensive introduction to all of the techniques for developing and serving web-pages. Unfortunately, the authors are living in a Miocrosoft Internet Explorer only world, which especially is reflected in their chapters on (x)html and javascript. Problem is, no version of IE is actually capable of understanding xhtml, so what you are in fact taught is xhtml 1.0 served as text/html which is treated as hmtl 4.01 in all browsers. Even worse, the third edition has rewritten all the examples in xhmtl 1.1 which *should*not* be served as text/html. Even worse, the xhtml examples given will trigger an error in IE 6 that will get IE 6 to behave as IE 5.5 in quirks mode - inclusive the css box model error. As to the javascript examples, the book isn't teaching you the w3c DOM but only the IE DOM, thus all examples using eg document.all will possibly fail in some browsers. And document.write isn't allowed if you are serving your pages as application/xhmtl+xml. I'm considering this book dangerous because it doesn't teach you how to code according to the w3c standards but only according to the 'Microsoft standard' ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining in it's own right...
The Stealing the Network series of books is in a catagory on it's own. Thrilling, entertaining, and fun to readjust scratches the surface of these books. I'll recommend this book to anybody, from joe sixpack who only uses the internet for games and pr0n to mitnick himself.
4-0 out of 5 stars Useful, readable illustration of computer security concepts
_Stealing the Network: How to Own the Box_ has 10 stories with a first person narrator, who is either an attacker, or in two cases, a defender. While the characterization isn't up to the standards of (good) commercial fiction* in most cases, it makes the technical medicine go down easier and gives a picture of who and why people do this stuff. That picture is useful in making an abstraction feel more like a concrete threat.
3-0 out of 5 stars Rough writing, but interesting
The writing needs some help -- I understand the newer books are edited by an actual writer to smooth out the prose a bit.

5-0 out of 5 stars A parent's handbook
Larry Magid's book is the first excellent source for parents to figure out what their kids are doing on MySpace. It teaches parents how to get their own MySpace account, not to spy on their children, but to see what this world is all about. It has lots of good advice for parents although I wish the author would have spent less time on telling parents how to pimp their MySpace page and more on how to talk to their children about safety and particularly about online friendships. All in all, though, a good, valuable read. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative. If you develop web software it's a must-read
I recently finished reading How to Break Web Software: Functional and Security Testing of Web Applications and Web Services by Mike Andrews and James A. Whittaker. I, like many of you, develop web software for a living. I've always taken security seriously and occasionally sneered when I ran across examples of common mistakes. Having said that, this book was an eye opener for me.
5-0 out of 5 stars Technique after technique that really works
You can't really read a book like this. You read a few pages and prop the book up with a cookbook holder and start typing in the examples. There were a couple I could not duplicate, but almost everything worked as the authors said it would. Great book, or maybe it would be better to say, great tool!

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent technical overview of online video
This book goes into the high level technical details of creating an online video service. As an absolute newcomer to the field, I found it an invaluable tool for dealing with the knowledgeable professionals that I rely on to do such things as analog to digital conversion and the set-up and maintenance of media servers. This book will not give you the expertise to do any of these jobs - for that you have to get your hands dirty and actually perform some of the tasks yourself. But it will give you a grasp of the concepts and terminology you'll need to manage the issues that come up.
5-0 out of 5 stars For the beginner...
...This is the best book I've come across on the subject. There are a lot of articles and other books that just throw these terms at you without them really being understood. This book shows you how other media (TV, film, dvd) are put together and how they can be converted to become internet content.
5-0 out of 5 stars Truly understand streaming technology in plain language
The author does a great job of explaining streaming in great detail for the layman ormore advanced user in plain easy to understand language. This book is good for web master, video engineer, student, or just about anyone who has an interest in a detailed guide about Internet video.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great introductory text
This is an excellent introduction to Bioinformatics. It does assume some very basic knowledge of biology- perhaps a couple of paragraphs could help the total newbies.
5-0 out of 5 stars great beginner
In spite of the title (I don't know many dummies interested in multiple sequence alignments) this reference is written by experts in the field of bioinformatics and is very accessable for the beginner.I purchased this book as a beginning graduate student so that I could learn which programs to use to compare amino acid and nucleic acid sequences as well as prepare them for publication and this book was perfect for this end. This text doesn't delve into the algorithms or much theory (which is learned through practice and other sources), nevertheless, I recommend this for the researcher for a crash course or quick reference. This book really helped me get my feet wet in this area (and recently publish a nice alignment) and will certainly reduce my workload next semester for my bioinformatics course!

3-0 out of 5 stars misleading title ....
The tile might be misleading.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book for instructors using Blackboard
I'm a Blackboard system administrator, so I read this book looking for things that I would like for our faculty members to know.I thought it did a very good job of providing them with basic explanations of features and ideas for using those features.I also enjoyed the paragraphs from instructors who made comments and suggestions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Some Corrections
The review by Someone's Mom appears to contain some factual errors. The banner feature is discussed on pages 75 - 76. Creating a learning unit is discussed on pages 98 - 100. Whether these entries would satisfy the previous reviewer is another matter, but the topics are addressed. There may be other errors as well in that review, but these two just jumped out at me. I agree that the authors couldn't seem to decide whether they wanted to write a technical book about Blackboard or a book focused on pedagogy and the use Blackboard. Nevertheless, there is useful content in this book, particularly for someone who is new to the use of course management systems.

2-0 out of 5 stars Handholding for Beginners
This book is well organized and will answer your BASIC Blackboard Questions -- but it certainly will not transform you into a 'power user' as it claims.

4-0 out of 5 stars Aging but excellent book
This book on Python is very complete and at the time it was published was better than any other book on Python. It is still an excellent book and has more information than any other Python book on the market.I have used the book as my major reference work for several years. For non-GUI programming you will find most of your questions answered in this book. The general tips on structure and theory of programming are particularly useful for people who do not have a formal education and degree in computer science.
2-0 out of 5 stars Better name it The Python Bible
Bibles, in the profane sense of the word, are huge books filled with clutter and not meaningful structure, which attempt to cover way more than they should. This is a clear example. It might be worth a quick look to a particular chapter, just to get a quick grasp of a particular area like XML, pygame, tkinter, etc. But definitely, this is not the book a beginner should use to learn the language, because as many said before, it seems to be a blind translation from their also crippled Java book. This reader, who cherished their C/C++ book couldn't be more dissappointed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointment
I purchased Deitel & Deitel's C++ How to Program book long ago, and found it to be comprehensive and extrordinarily helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars With respect
Evan Marc Katz has created a warm, witty, inviting book that brilliantly describes pearls and pitfalls of online dating. He discusses the sensitive emotional and interpersonal issues' dating online imposes on singles, and offers practical suggestions and compassionate support. This book is an invaluable resource for those singles dating online. If you want to laugh out loud while learning about online dating, it is a must read!
5-0 out of 5 stars You got me to try it!
After my divorce I had trouble meeting people. All my friends were dating online, but I was afraid to. My girlfriend had recommended this book to me and I was amazed! There is so much information in it! It's smart, witty and easy to read! I am also not very internet savvy, so I found its explanations really helpful. My thoughts about dating on the internet have changed immensely and I am now enjoying "getting out there again." Thanks, Evan!

2-0 out of 5 stars I can't believe I bought this book
I was disappointed by this book. People who are reading all the glowing reviews on here should consider who the reviewers are and should know that this book isn't for everyone. I bought it because I thought it would be useful to get a male perspective on Internet dating. Evan Katz is a likable guy with a self-effacing humor and a breezy, engaging writing style. But women, especially over 35, should know that this book is mostly geared toward guys and giving them advice on how to land dates with attractive women.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm paralyzed without my copy.
I just cannot find my copy of this book. With this book, I've been brave enough to pop open my computer and install things like a TV-tuner card, more powerful memory cards, cd-burners. People think I'm a computer whiz.
2-0 out of 5 stars Upgrading and Troubleshooting for Dummies 6th Edition
Really only for someone who knows nothing about computers. Very basic information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful introduction- brilliant overview! 6th edition
Kind of a combination introduction/overview to the state of PC technology today, with an emphasis on helping readers new to the subject in maximizing any PCs performance. This is an excellent book! Covers all the latest in Windows XP configuration and upkeep, as well as buzzwords like DVD-RW, DVD+RW, CDRW/DVD, 802.11b, 802.11a, wireless access points, fast Ethernet, FireWire, USB 2.0, MP3s, WMAs, LCDs, DVI-I, DV camcorders, digital cameras, scanners, printers, modems, NTFS, ATX, AGP 3.0 8x, DDR SDRAM,... etc. EVERYTHING current to today's PCs is given a brief mention. I especially like the Appendix, "The Rathbone Reference of Fine Ports", which clearly explains the most common of today's PC connections, as well as the ones that are going out of style. Very helpful! This book strikes a great balance between being too simple and being too advanced. It's the perfect companion to the "Windows for Dummies" series, right along with another recent book, "Troubleshooting Your PC for Dummies", by Dan Gookin. Highly recommended! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful book on how to use a powerful tool
I work as a copy editor at a newspaper, so I needed a book which would help me get started real quick!I played around a bit with Quark years ago, but I really needed it fleshed out for my understanding. This book explains all the basic tools in Quark, and gives some good technical tips.I just wished it could have also given some advice on decent layout design.I keep this one at my desk! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Common sense distilled
This book is a nice collection of what should be common sense rules (obviously common sense is not so common, as the examples of actual web sites in the book prove). I would assume that it would be most beneficial to a beginning designer, although it's a book everyone involved with web design or programming should browse through every now and then.

1-0 out of 5 stars A complete waste of time for anyone in the industry.
I received zero (0) value from this book, and I can't figure out why anyone would recommend it. I kept waiting for something to learn, but alas, there is nothing but common sense included in this book. To say nothing for the fact that each page contained about 2 paragraphs of text (an image caption) with an image showing Good or Bad examples. What a waste of money, time, and energy. Unfortunately the individuals behind 37 signals had just enough clout to get a book published and have caused me to look elsewhere for authors/teachers. NOTE: their software at 37signals.com is great, but even their own blog is hard to read. Overall a major disappointment. NOTE: absolute beginners may find a 1 star value out of this book. However, 30 days on the job will teach you everything here.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too much emphasis on error reporting/recovery
The sub title of this book should stop at "How to Improve Error Messages".The focus of the book is on recovering from problems, either from user input or from the system. That's all well and good and their ideas are fine. However I was hoping they'd spend some time talking about how to lay out your forms so they are mor effective and less likely to cause problems for the user in the first place.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant beginners book
This is a brilliant book for beginners and home page designers alike. Excellent online support and resources. Slightly dated now (July 2005), with nothing about CSS or "Style", so eagerly awaiting their next book which will hopefully cover these topics.
5-0 out of 5 stars great
The book was in great condition and delivery was on time, I couldn't expect anything more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive
Finally, a computer book that looks at the task at hand beyond the computer.I was looking for a book to help me do a decent looking web site on my own. This is the book to get. They talk about ALL aspects of the process - from how to write and plan the content to writing the HTML to do it AND everything in between like hosting, fonts to use, colors,... everything.I have found this to be a rare commodity in info systems books. This book gives you advice based on their experience and lets you know what to expect if you don't follow it.This is what I want in a computer book, not a step by step guide on how to execute menu items. This is truly a well-written book and I wish the authors would do many others.Good job! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Heavy
This book is good for beginners who want to learn HTML and the basics of web design and programming. It's well written.
3-0 out of 5 stars I don't think this is good for beginners
I used this book to refresh my memory because I hadn't done any web programming in a while. It worked just fine for that, but I don't think I'd have any idea what was going on if I approached this book without prior knowledge.I definitely wouldn't recommend this for absolute beginners. This book is best for people who need review or as a supplement to other books on the subject.

1-0 out of 5 stars Five Pieces of Junk
First of all, my new book broke into three different pieces after sitting on the shelf for three weeks.I only read it at home - no damage due to lugging it back and forth - and had only made it through the first three chapters. It is now in five pieces four months after purchase. If you hope to resell books after reading them, this won't be good for you.Read more
