4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for a Beginning Notes User
I was looking for a book on how to design notes databases. This wasn't it.No fault to the author of the book.It is very well written andexplains the use of Notes inside and out. However it doesn't coverprogramming at all.I didn't read the description provided well enough tosee that before I bought it.Read more

Editorial Review

Lotus Notes suffered in the browser wars, losing ground to open standards, Internet communication, and open databases. The program has rallied though, and remains a very popular groupware solution. If you're responsible, or would like to be responsible, for administering a Notes group or developing Notes applications, you'll benefit by earning one of IBM's Lotus Notes certifications. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Resource for Lotus Exams
I purchased this book to help me prepare for the AD1, SA1 and SA2 exams.I found the material in this book to be basic but very informative. The chapters are fairly easy to read. Each chapter has study questions to help you prepare for the exams.I can't say this is a 100% comprehense text, but it does hit all of the high points and gives excellent test-taking tips.I also used the cd-rom to study for the tests.I found them to be very helpful also.I would recommend this text to anyone who is studying for the Lotus exams.

4-0 out of 5 stars Is a fine R4 review , just don't count on it for everything.
People here seem to get confused on Exam prep versus learning Notes.Asan ex-Loti (worked for Lotus), I can vouch for the book and state that itwill HELP you to pass the exams mentioned--particularly the AD1, and SA1(and really folks, there is NO easier Lotus test then SA1).5-0 out of 5 stars This book was critical to obtaining my CLP
I passed AD1, AD2 and SA1 each on the first try using this book. This book and my prior developing experience helped me pass AD1 and AD2 without any other references or practice tests.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Lotus script book for suckers
I see the other reviewers all seem to have the same opinion as I did.I had reason to use Lotus Script.I just wanted to know the basics and nothing heavy.
1-0 out of 5 stars Totally useless!
I don't use Notes, just Approach... All I learned from this book is how to Click a button to show a Message Box. The author thinks he is very clever because he replaced the usual "Hello World" by "GoodbyeCruel World".If that is all you need Lotusscript for, then buy thisbook! 1-0 out of 5 stars Did the cover say LotusScript?
OK so maybe the cover did say LotusScript, but if you are a Notes Developer, FORGET THIS BOOK! The book has absolutly nothing that deals with Notes/Domino at all.Maybe if there are people out there that want tolearn LotusScript for other products besides Notes, this MIGHT be ok. There is little more to say for Notes consultants besides look elsewhere! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not practical for Business
I've had this book at my desk at work for over a year now. I still have not found one pratical use for this book. Every time I ran into a question developing a Notes application this book has been no help. A lot of the applications used in my business rely on LotusScript which is very weakly covered in this book. My advice, go to lotus.com and get their manuals. You'll be better off.

3-0 out of 5 stars good, not great - it's what Domino online help SHOULD be
This book provides the info that Lotus SHOULD have included in Domino Designer's online help. I feel like Lotus ripped me off, and this book adequately fills the void. However, I was hoping for more in-depth developer's info. Instead, it's more suited to the novice developer or advanced user, and is definitely not a comprehensive reference. If you're a beginner, you'll find this useful. If you're a more advanced developer, or an administrator, then look elsewhere.

1-0 out of 5 stars For beginners only
This book is supposed to be at a user level of Intermediate - Advanced.Quite the contrary. As a reference for experienced developers I found this book to be very disappointing. If you are relatively new to Notes this book could be of value, otherwise I believe your money can be better spent elsewhere. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference for all things development and administr
This books covers all 3 domino clients, the Notes Client, Development and Administrator whilst also covering domino's development capabilities through Formula language, Lotusscript, Java and wed design.3-0 out of 5 stars OK, depending on what you're looking for
As a Domino admin running R6 for several months (and R5 for several years), I was hoping for more detailed server info than this book has.I think if you are a Notes power user or just getting into Lotus programming, this may be a good reference. It is not really an administration reference.I will not be using this book, but plan to make it available to my users.I will be waiting for Kirkland's next book to be released.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great All Around Notes/Domino Book!
As an experienced Notes and Domino developer, I enjoyed reading this book.It helped me familiarize myself with the new R6 features and had enough detail to give me some excellent development tips and ideas. It's strength is that it is a broad reference covering all three clients and the web, including installation, development and administration. It will certainly be an excellent guide for the notes user up to the moderately experienced developer.A book any serious Notes user or developer would want on their shelf! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Okay to use a study guide, but it has errors
Good info in this book, but there are number of incorrect answers to sample questions. The answers in the book vs. the CD weren't always consistent which could get you into trouble when taking the exam. Libby Schwarz and Ben Malekzadeh's "All In One Lotus Notes & Domino Exame Guide" is much better.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but with errors
Yes, there is a wealth of info in this book, but I was disappointed in the number of incorrect answers to sample questions. The answers in the book vs. the CD weren't always consistent and found myself looking to other resources to confirm answers.Nice tool for prepping, but be careful!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent prep and Notes source!
This is the absolute best R5 book available by far. The flow is outstanding with excellent examples. The review questions and assessment tests are well written and very useful. Anyone preparing for the CLP exam or who just wants to know all the details of R5 should have this book. It should be on every Notes developers bookshelf. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars ...
A good book although a little complicated for first time API users. I did find it useful but somewhat outdated i.e. Notes R3...

3-0 out of 5 stars A good way to start
First of all, I must admit this book is really outdated. It covers Notes R3.X and some newer features/capabilities of Notes are not mentioned. In addition, I found numerous mistakes in function declarations end examplescode. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Has typos but still valuable.
I used this book to study for the Lotus exam and found it extremely useful. Yes there were typos, but you could certainly see when they occur in the book if you have some experience already with programming lotusscript.I would buy this book just because it is sufficient to use, learn and study from.

1-0 out of 5 stars LotusScript
I can only agree with the comments below. If you want to study this topic and find something that adds more depth stay away from this awful book. Not only does it say nothing that you can't get from the on line designer helpdocumentation but it actively confuses the entire topic by getting nearlyeverything wrong including syntax errors and the worst set of exam examplesI have ever seen. The person who proof read this appalling"reference" should be shot -its a true disgrace to MH (Who havepublished some fine books on the Notes certification route)- a true victoryfor sloppy workmanship and generally lazy publishing. - Spend your money onsomething better.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not at all to the point
I just took the LotusScript test and passed with a 74% which isthe minimum score. I studied this book carefully and not much of itwas on the test. I noticed that much of the material is from Notes help. The other material added by the author appeared to be good information until I realized none of it was on the test. As for the errors in the book, there are indeed many. In a preverse sort of way, I enjoyed going through the book and correcting the errors. I thought it might help me on the test, but again, it didn't.I believe you can pass this test by downloading the test objective from the Lotus Web site and writing your own script and studying Notes help... ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Very poor book!
Don't buy this book! All it does is give an overly detailed explanation of how to use the e-mail, which I'm sure doesn't take the average person 24 separate 1-hour lessons to master. ...

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough & Enlightening !
This is one of the most useful software handbooks I have laid my hands on. It will teach you basic usage and go on to more intermediate skills which will give you the confidence to use Notes to the full. I would recommend this book to new-starters of Notes but Developers may find it old-hat. My organisation has just moved over to Notes 4.6 from MS Outlook and gave us no software training at all. I look forward to reading other books in the Sams range.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quick to the point with clearly indexed proficiency areas
Sams offers another well-researched how-to book for Lotus Notes and true to its title, people using it will teach themselves Notes 4.6 in 24 hours of reading and doing. I used the book to teach 30 other Notes newbies howto use the program to enhance their productivity. The book has found a newhome now -- "borrowed" by a sales consultant who packed it aspart of his notebook and telephone cables. ... Read more
