Very good source of information.I will most likely buy other books in this series.

Glad I accidently bought it.
I meant to buy a VBA and a formula book, but bought the Bible instead.What the heck I thought, I bought it, so I'll read it.I got the books to learn more about VBA programs because I have no experience.It taught me many many neat things about excel even though I've been using excel for more than 5 years and continually show my coworkers how to do their work faster and better in Excel.Now I've been showing people about named ranges and arrays.Oh about that formula book, I haven't even touched it because this was the one I really needed.

Yawning Hell
Is this the world's most boring book ?Technically competent but painfully dry. A gift too insomniacs. Good luck on getting past page 1 !

Only Buy if Required for a Class
Very boring reading.Chapters tend to repeat themselves.The class I had for this book was one of the most boring classes I ever had.Instructor lectured from power point slides.I could have taken this class homestudy and done just fine, than to sit in class.

Caution: Will Cause Drowsiness.
This book is simply horrible. It takes the stereotypical accountant and shoves him into the pages. It is so lethargic and monotonous that all the valuable information within the book just stops making sense. This book should be read by anyone who has doubts about becoming an accountant. Not for Beginners! Many errors.
The book is definitely not for teaching beginners, it is to prepare for the MOS cetification. However, many exercises have some sort of mistakes, either instructional or numeric type mistakes so that the exercises CANNOT be assigned as home work, but have to be done with the students in class and the "BUGS" worked out before they can do them on their own. It is a real shame to release a study book without proof reading it first and correcting the mistakes. An individual who is studying for the MOS Excel certification can get some good information from the book, but a student will be very confused if not very frustrated using it. Even as an instructor I get frustrated over the numerous errors. I have one suggestion: I'll correct the errors if the author/publisher pays me for doing the work.

Microsoft Office Excel 2003 Step by Step
This is the book you need to ;earn Excel. Included is a CD and the reading is very easy and understandable.

Run away from this book.
The first two chapters in this book are just a straightforward explanation of the Excel worksheet. The third chapter is where you are supposed to begin learning how to use Excel. The very first section in the chapter -- creating formulas to calculate values -- starts with an example that is wrong! You cannot perform the calculation given by the author by following his instructions. Instead, you receive an error message. This particular calculation is an absolutely basic one for using Excel. A visit to Microsoft's website does not provide you with a correction for that or anything else. Any reputable publisher -- O'Reilly for instance -- always has a link where you can find errors corrected. I stopped using the book at this point and purchased Excel 2003 Personal Trainer. I have not found an error in that book and I have completed four of the chapters. It appears Microsoft Excel 2003 Step by Step is in the best tradition of Microsoft products. Their operating system gives us viruses, infections, spyware, trojans, and adware. (This is why Microsoft's new operating system is called VISTA.) this is a real good book if you want to get the basic of it.

I can't find anything on pivot tables
I already knew almost everything in this book, so I was disappointed when it arrived and I started looking through it. I ordered it hoping it would give me a simple explanation "for dummies" on what pivot tables are and how to create/work with them.They're not even listed in the index!

Excel 2003 Formulas
Great book!!Well written--very clear content.Assumes you have some background but it also starts with good basic information.Goes into real detail. Definitely recommend for serious Excel.

I found the book very handy and intuitive. An excelent choice, especially if you are a beginner and you need to improve your skills

Okay, but no cigar
Typically these technical how-to books are badly written and rushed to print and I found this one to be no exception.Although it offers some helpful hints not found in other Excel guides, it is rather wordy and vague in places. Some of the sample formulas simply do not work or else are not explained fully in context.Added to this, the accompanying CD skimps on the first four chapters, making it impossible to follow along on some the exercises the author provides. In some cases, he doesn't even provide a sample table.I went out and bought a copy of Microsoft's Excel Data Analysis and Business Modeling and find this to be better written, much more comprehensive, and easier on the wallet. ... Simply the best Intro to Finance book out there
With an undergraduate degree in economics and two years of working experience in Wall St, you can say that I had the chance to read quite a few finance books. I find Principles of Finance with Excel to be hands-down the best Intro-Finance book of them all. Not only does it explains the finance topics very clearly, it teaches you how to apply this knowledge in Excel. This is by far, in my opinion, the best way to learn finance. Furthermore, since solutions to the exercises are included on the CD, this book is perfect to the self-motivated reader. Lost or stolen, I would purchase this book again.

Excellent use of excel format
This book should be on every financial analyst desk. This book is helpful to understand the principles of Finance from simple to complex and if you are a beginner or an advance excel super user this book is useful(CD Included). You should ensure that the CD is included with your purchase because the CD is packed with EXCELLENT examples (formula driven). The CD also works as a study guide skill set. The author did an outstanding job in bringing the complex elements of the financials to be a readable and understandable format for the reader/user.

Another Masterpiece from Doctor Benninga
This book is by far the best book for introducing students to Finance and Excel. Doctor Benninga is in my opinion one of the best authors out there and he has again gracefully managed to publish a book that will become a classic just like his previous work Financial Modeling. I've had the opportunity to teach some classes of corporate finance and this book is an excellent introductory into the field of finance and the use of excel. In this book the student is able to learn everything from simple calculations of present value all the way up to valuing options. Not too bad on a Mac either!
Granted, this book is for Windows and a software version ago but I found it to be a VERY useful resource.I use it for MAC and just tailor it around the 2004 for Mac edition.It has a CD in the back with trial documents that teach you as if you have never turned on your computer before.Language that you can understand, screen shots so you can see exactly what something looks like.It is a great learning tool for formulas.

Excellent Guide
I purchased Excel Personal Trainer because I had a horrible college professor and therefore never learned this program properly, and as a soon to be college grad, Excel is essential for me to know. I have to say that I am very pleased with this book. It is very easy to follow, and I like the fact that there are practice lessons as well as illustrations. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who needs to know Excel quickly like i did.

The book is very good with really good explanations and examples on descriptive analysis and inferential analysis.

Better Title: Intro to Statistics using Excel Add-ins
On the positive side, this book has many excellent case studies and examples. It is well written and interesting. However, I was disappointed, as I was expecting use of Excel to rigorously solve decision making and data analysis problems. The focus of the book is mostly traditional statistics solved using a group of commercial add-ins for Excel. If this is what you want, then the book would get five stars. However, for data analysis and decision making, I think a more thorough treatment using Excel without relying so much on the add-ins would have been appropriate.

Serious Excel 2000 Problem
The text book is great.I have many of Winston's other books andthey are all great.The Palisade stuff works just fine. However, the StatPro Addin that accompanies this text does not work with MS Excel 2000. I contacted the IT guy that the authors directed me to--he was stumped. He just gave up and suggested I return my book for a refund because he could not figure out it out. Again, the book is great but the StatPro Addin sucks! ... Read more

Not for beginners and not for reference
I rate this book poor. It is badly laid out. Unless you already know how to use Excel, this book would be of no value to you. It's impossible to find anything, and not enough relevent illustrations. The For Dummies series is off my list of reference books. Save your money.

There's tons of useful information in this book.
I use Excel at work all the time and this book is always within an arm's reach. The formulas and functions chapters are especially helpful -- as are the ones on PivotTables, building Macros, and sharing data with other programs. Good book , worth to read
This book is designated as the textbook for our master's level management modeling class. The author concerntrated on the application of Microsoft Solver to solve various of optimazation problems that we freqently faced in the real business opreations. Overall, this is good book for entry-level management modeling study.

Good book except a few errors and hpyes...
This book contains a lot of errors which should be corrected, and many pro-microsoft or authors' commercial tool hypes (which costs you your time). Some contents are repeating and it may take for you to finish the book longer than it should, but nicely written and well explaining a variety of topics. Basically this is a good book with few minor problems. With the same money, however, I am afraid that taking another Excel book could be a better choice.

Lot of good usage information
I found the book to meet the needs that I had to get a better understanding of some of the more capable functions in Excel.In particular, I was looking for more insight in the use of Pivot Tables which it provided although it stopped short of going sufficiently deep in the use of functions and formulas within Pivot Tables which would have been helpful.I particularly liked that it came with a CD that could be loaded on my laptop great when you don't have the book readily at hand.There were a few editing errors with items refering to the wrong figure or table, but not difficult to figure out which was the right referrence, just a minor annoyance.

Absolutely Great!
Advanced Modeling is a fantastic book, and pretty easy to follow with relatively few coding errors.There are some books out there that have errors in the code that they use, which makes it difficult or someone to learn the techniques.Even for those without a solid background in VBA, this book can benefit you to start learning how to code properly.Anyone who is relatively proficient with Excel can definitely gain a new trick or two from reading this book.All you really need to start using this book is a basic understanding of finance concepts (e.g. portolio theory, capital budgeting, binomial options pricing, Black-Scholes, etc.).The techniques that are taught are also useful in other modeling exercises, and not necessarily just for finance-related topics.

A Cookbook for Financial Modellers
Yes, the book won't teach you CAPM, Black-Scholes, or much financial theory.But there is NO shortage of those books.There is a shortage of books with real-world Excel solutions to applying financial theory to data.I've had this book for a couple of years and have probably only used 10% of it, only because I don't have time, real business need, to do the rest.I sometimes take it to bed to read and dream of having the time to try out some of their other models.That's the only thing I can add to the other reviews here, the amount of love and passion for the subject put into this book.There's not one extra padded word or graphic in this book.Yes, if there was one book I'd have to take to a desert island with Excel and some financial data this would be it.

Not really satisfying
One of the main points of programming books is to help the reader understand the models being programmed.On this count, "Advanced modelling in finance using Excel and VBA" fails miserably.There is very little explanation of the financial concepts and models.Anyone hoping to learn finance from this book will be very disappointed.Read more

All Around the Mountain...
This book is mind-numbing, as are statistics in general.The authors used a lot of words to communicate their message, taking you "all around the mountain" to get where you need to be.You must do a lot of filtering while reading to get to the subject matter and understand the concepts.

I actually have one of the authors as my teacher.He does a great job with the writing of this book and brings that exactly to the class room.Very easy to understand. Great software.

this is one of the worst books I have ever encountered.if you actually want to LEARN statistics or any kind of math analysis, stay clear from this book.Conceptual explanation of the material is ABSENT.you will not learn anything except how to follow certain directions on excel.if you want to be more than just a low level manager who just follows directions, but one who actually wants to MAKE directions, then this book is not for you.
