3-0 out of 5 stars Beauty over accessibility
I was hoping this book would be the perfect solution for a class I teach that includes basic Web design and HTML authoring skills, and some of the information hits the mark perfectly. One thing emphasized in my class, however, is accessible design for people with disabilities, and this book does not address that issue at all, except for color blindness. Many of the tips and techniques, particularly about the use of frames and design tables, are out of date in terms of accessible design. Many of the ideas, if implemented poorly (which would tend to be the case by novices), would render beautiful but inaccessible (to people with disabilities) web sites. In the book's favor, it does cover cascading style sheets (CSS) for visual layout, but the importance of using that technique for accessible design is not mentioned. That said, this is a beautiful book with many "before and after" makeovers of how simple changes, such as font size and alignment, can increase appeal and usability.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for High School Teachers
This book is EXCELLENT as a source for explaining concepts. There are LOTS of tutorial books for teaching HTML and specific software programs to generate the code, but THEY don't guarantee because a website 'works' logistically on a server, it WORKS for the intended audience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Step-by-Step Web Design Book
If you are looking for a book to tell you all you need to know about HTML, don't look here. But if you have a basic knowledge of the web (well, maybe even if you don't) and just want an excellent book to teach you the fundamentals of web design, this is the perfect choice.I've been searching for months to find a book that could walk me through designing my own family website and this has been exactly what I was looking for. And truly, the book does take you through things step by step.Visually pleasing, full of examples and useful information, this book is beside my computer almost daily.Even after completing it, there are plenty of things to refer back to, including a great chapter on advanced tips and tricks that I used today when I wanted to force a link in my site to open in a new browser window. I have never felt the need to review a book before, but I'm so pleased with this purchase that I just had to make an exception. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst World History Book Ever -- Huge Gaps in History
I bought this book and hoped it had a comprehensive view of world history.Sadly, it does not.First, I looked up World War II to find the name of the Japanese leader who ordered the kamikaze pilots to bomb Pearl Harbor.Only six pages are devoted to World War II and, since half of each page is graced with a huge photo, really only three pages of actual text (which is a huge font as well).Absolutely no mention of Japan's part in World War II and only a picture of the bomb dropped on Hiroshima without any further explanation.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent History book for young kids
This is an excellent History book for kids who like to read and see pictures. The pictures are not only beautiful, they help kids to transport themselves to the times of History they are reading about. The internet links information is very useful, but if your child is too young to surf the internet, the book itself has enough historical information for young children.
5-0 out of 5 stars Superb, An excellent, Concice History
This is an excellent introduction to history. This is a must for homeschoolers, particularly those of a young age.

Parents hear all the time about what a great resource the Internet is, but it's often tough to know where to start. 1-0 out of 5 stars Trained Monkeys with Alzheimers WOULD have done better
As the title states it is my belief that trained monkeys with alzheimers would have done a better job on this book. I had to buy this for a college class and I feel dumber just by reading it. The first project they have you do is interview five people to "Create a Personal Network" What the heck interviewing five people and putting their answers on cards would have to do with the internet I'll never know. I know that that was the first project but jeeze they could have at least had you fire up a fricken browser or something. Maybe even turn the computer on. But wait it gets better. Next we go onto sorting your favorites folder. This is garbage and I feel I have wasted money on it. Had I been able to this would have gotten negative stars on the stupid rating. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for younger kids
I had purchased for my 9 year old (who is a very advanced reader and gifted student) the Usborne World History book. She LOVED that book, and has read it cover to cover several times. I figured that the Usborne Science Encyclopedia would be similarly interesting to her.Wrong.She has barely touched the Science Encyclopedia. The problem with the Science Encyclopedia is that it is very complex and written at a very high level. I wouldn't recommend it for a child less than 14 or 15 and maybe even beyond that.
5-0 out of 5 stars Science Encyclopedia a wealth of information at low cost.
My wife and I have enjoyed the Science Encyclopedia very much. The interweaving of the internet web sites make this a great information resource.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Must for All Homeschoolers!
We are classically educating our children at home, and I was a little nervous about teaching chemistry to a 3rd grader. But this book allows you to study your topic in as much depth as you wish.In addition to the helpful websites (some are more helpful than others, admittedly), there are mini experiments and "see for yourself" projects that are fun, safe and educational.Theories are presented as theories, not facts. However, creation or "intelligent design" are not presented at all, which makes this encyclopedia incomplete.Other Christian homeschoolers may have a problem with the "800 million years ago..." jargon, but that's why we homeschool- to weed out the nonsense in our children's education.HOMESCHOOLERS: READ MY OTHER REVIEWS! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great for kids to use on their own!
This is a really nicely laid out book. I've used other guides to the internet for kids before, but this was the first that was really made for the child to use instead of for the parent to then go and help the child. My kids really love getting out there own their own. With the guidlines thebook tells them about stuff like talking to stangers and giving out namesand address, I don't have to worry about them at all. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Even teens will like it...
We have to use this book in our Information Technology course, and we were all a little hesitant at first, but from the first page this book had us laughing...and thinking. It provides you with great resources and plenty of opportunities to flex your mind muscles with hypothetical situations and challenging questions. I actually enjoy using THIS text book! Everyone who has a computer should get it, if for no other reason that to laugh and think!

3-0 out of 5 stars A Book for Teenagers and Adults
"This book instructs teenagers and non-professional computer users on how to build a personal Web site for FREE, combining step-by-step simple instructions with practical and entertaining examples."
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Web Design Novices!
I should know...I am not computer savvy.I find it amazing that without spending money on expensive software that requires its own expertise, I am able to build my very own webpage! This book takes you step by step to designing a fully functioning personal web site in a very short period of time using the resources you already have on your computer.Spending just an hour or two a day, it took me less than a week to go through all the steps in the book and I now have a fully functioning model from which I can begin building my own web page.I never thought it would be so simple.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
***** This is an EXCELLENT guide for beginners! I had my niece come over for a weekend to try it out. Following the step-by-step directions, we created a simple, free web site. Nothing fancy, but plain either. This book begins the creating of a site OFF the internet. In simple words and terms the first few chapters get the "newbie" (for lack of a better term) used to the computer, its files/folders, and inner workings. My niece is around ten-years-old and had only a few problems. I believe that kids around third grade could successfully use this guide. But if you are an adult who is new to computers, this book is perfect for you as well. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome stuff about infrastructure attacks
Here is the thing - I am giving this book a high score (4) since it contains unique and fun content related to network infrastructure attacks and defenses, which I have not seen anywhere else. In my view, the good stuff justifies such score, although I suspect that some other reviewers will sledgehammer the book for having too much of routine material covered in other previous books, including the venerable Hacking Exposed.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good broad coverage
The book has two major sections: (a) configuration and maintenance practices, and (b) techniques for vulnerability assessment. The breadth of coverage of many modern techniques and terminology is very good; they go in-depth on a few topics here and there.
4-0 out of 5 stars For going from the basics to the advanced...
Regardless of how many steps you take to secure your organizational computing environment, there's always some new exploit waiting to nail you.The best you can do is to understand your network and stay on top of the technology.Extreme Exploits - Advanced Defenses Against Hardcore Hacks by Victor Oppleman, Oliver Friedrichs, and Brett Watson can help you in that pursuit, especially in the networking realm...
