Not for Beginners! Many errors.
The book is definitely not for teaching beginners, it is to prepare for the MOS cetification. However, many exercises have some sort of mistakes, either instructional or numeric type mistakes so that the exercises CANNOT be assigned as home work, but have to be done with the students in class and the "BUGS" worked out before they can do them on their own. It is a real shame to release a study book without proof reading it first and correcting the mistakes. An individual who is studying for the MOS Excel certification can get some good information from the book, but a student will be very confused if not very frustrated using it. Even as an instructor I get frustrated over the numerous errors. I have one suggestion: I'll correct the errors if the author/publisher pays me for doing the work.

Microsoft Office Excel 2003 Step by Step
This is the book you need to ;earn Excel. Included is a CD and the reading is very easy and understandable.

Run away from this book.
The first two chapters in this book are just a straightforward explanation of the Excel worksheet. The third chapter is where you are supposed to begin learning how to use Excel. The very first section in the chapter -- creating formulas to calculate values -- starts with an example that is wrong! You cannot perform the calculation given by the author by following his instructions. Instead, you receive an error message. This particular calculation is an absolutely basic one for using Excel. A visit to Microsoft's website does not provide you with a correction for that or anything else. Any reputable publisher -- O'Reilly for instance -- always has a link where you can find errors corrected. I stopped using the book at this point and purchased Excel 2003 Personal Trainer. I have not found an error in that book and I have completed four of the chapters. It appears Microsoft Excel 2003 Step by Step is in the best tradition of Microsoft products. Their operating system gives us viruses, infections, spyware, trojans, and adware. (This is why Microsoft's new operating system is called VISTA.) this is a real good book if you want to get the basic of it.

I can't find anything on pivot tables
I already knew almost everything in this book, so I was disappointed when it arrived and I started looking through it. I ordered it hoping it would give me a simple explanation "for dummies" on what pivot tables are and how to create/work with them.They're not even listed in the index!

Excellent!
We had to buy this book as part of our undergraduate Computer Engineering curriculum at The University of Akron.The book is very well written; I taught myself a lot by studying it.
Try reading 3 pages without falling asleep
While "Operating Systems" is not exactly the sexiest subject in Computer Science, it ought to be possible to make it interesting, for example by taking a historical or problem solving approach.

A really Solid Quality Book
This book and its companion "T-SQL Programming" are two great books, they are not for beginners and in some part requires a full immersion, they are not an easy reading... but at the end you you will have a really deep understanding of the topics they covers. I've found really useful to read it two times, the second one I've noticed that a lot of sentences takes a new light after you've a whole overview of all the topics. A definitively must have. Both !

If you are only going to buy one SQL Server book...
There are occassions when I like to believe that I can write really smart SQL queries. Then I see the stuff that Itzik Ben-Gan and Steve Kass (the Tecknial Rewiwer of this book) come up with, and I crawl back under my rock.

Not adequate for the Access certification test.
This book appears to be fine for a general review of the Access topics, but is lacking in detail for the test. I found that the book alone would have been totally inadequate for the certification test. The MeasureUp online training had value, but it too was limited. Access 2003 has a sorting and grouping icon, yet what I found was that I needed to use Access 2000 procedures for this and other MeasureUp tasks, without the newer icons. The MeasureUp study guide was well-presented, yet I faced a culture shock on test day. The questions were formatted differently, the questions significantly different than the way MeasureUp presented them. MeasureUp wrote their questions in a clearer manner than the test, but the problem is that I needed to see the questions as they would be on the test. The text is essentially a step-by-step book, not of test-taking value. I will keep it as a reference, which was not my reason for purchasing it. The MeasureUp training was great, but not related to the actual test.

A useful guide
This is very much a study guide and is not really aimed at the inexperienced user.It presumes a lot of knowledge and focuses on preparation of the exam elements only.If you need in depth knowledge then there are better books (QUE, other Microsoft products).As a refresher for the exams I have found it to be excellent.It can highlight the areas needing more study and its exercises get your mindset into the MOS exam process.I would recommend it as part of your arsenal in preparing for the MOS exams.

Must own if you are a c++ engineer
This book touches many aspects of the C++ programming language. Even you are an experienced engineer, you can learn a lot of things from this book and write more solid code. I regret that I didn't buy and read this book sooner.

THE book next to Bjarne's for C++
A really good book where there is something to learn in every other example and chapter even if you consider yourself a master C++ programmer with years of experience.Besides reading the book, I happened to attend Scott's live training on Design patterns and Embedded C++ both of which were great experience.

Excel 2003 Formulas
Great book!!Well written--very clear content.Assumes you have some background but it also starts with good basic information.Goes into real detail. Definitely recommend for serious Excel.

Okay, but no cigar
Typically these technical how-to books are badly written and rushed to print and I found this one to be no exception.Although it offers some helpful hints not found in other Excel guides, it is rather wordy and vague in places. Some of the sample formulas simply do not work or else are not explained fully in context.Added to this, the accompanying CD skimps on the first four chapters, making it impossible to follow along on some the exercises the author provides. In some cases, he doesn't even provide a sample table.I went out and bought a copy of Microsoft's Excel Data Analysis and Business Modeling and find this to be better written, much more comprehensive, and easier on the wallet. ... Dummy No More
This book is well written and well laid out. It can be used as a reference or as a learning tool for those less knowledgeable on computer stuff. I just advanced from Windows 98 and this made the leap/transition much easier and less confounding.

This is an excellent book
This is an excellent book that should be in the library of every serious database developer.It is by far the most detailed book that I have ever read on T-SQL programming.There are many cookbooks or sql recipes books but IMHO this book is many steps ahead of the rest of the books.It is well written, with realistic examples and extremely precise.The one thing that I really loved in this book was that for every problem it provides many alternative solutions and explains the advantages of one solution over the other.Again congratulations to the authors for their great job.

A good and robust all-around book to SSIS
Even if you did not read some of Kirk's posts at his SQLJunkies Blog or articles at WinITpro you will realize that he knows the stuff he was writing about very well. It is a good book to keep around for your SQL Server support team, because it is kind of a reference and training style book at the same time.
excellent resource
Overall the book is an excellent resource for information on SSIS.The book is laid out well, having seperate parts for describing the how tos and the reference catalog.I especially liked the way that the author identified the "key settings" for each task first.

Thorough - but often filled with convoluted waffle.
This book starts out well, explaining the topics clearly and without a lot of unnecessary repetition. Unfortunately, the writing style chops and changes throughout the book with the worst written sections being a real chore to plough your way through.
The Best C++ Book
This is by far the best C++ book I have ever read. It is comprehensive, explanations are simple and to the point, and, up-to-date. I am referring to the 4th edition, of course. The earlier editions might be a bit outdated.

C++ Primer 2nd Edition: A review
Lippman's book contains an introduction into the world of programming in the C++ language. The book goes from simple basics, assuming you know the basic foundations of a programming language, to in depth coverage of C++ programming. It explains both with examples of the programming language and with detailed explanations of what everything in the explanations means and does. This book is an excellent tool for both learning the C++ language and referencing back while you are working on programming something. Somewhat OK for Reference, Bad for Test Preparation
I bought these thinking that Microsoft would be in the best position to write a training kit to prepare for the certification tests, since they are, after all, Microsoft tests.Big mistake.If I hadn't used the Transcender practice tests also, I would have gotten a rude awakening at the test center.The MS books have some decent reference information, but they don't prepare you for the tests.

Good things, bad things...
Good:
Good, but too much fluff...
I've been a Server OS administrator since 1991, starting with Novell 3.12. I started with OS2, Novell and then Windows NT in 1995 at the second largest retailer in the US and I've worked my way through NT 3.5 to 2003. I bought Minasi's NT 4.0 books and thought they were the greatest thing going, but I was still green and the other publishers were not up to speed. Now I own the Windows Server 2003 books Inside Out, Unleashed and Administrators Companion. I have read much of Minasi's 2003 book, but I doubt I'll buy it. I have to say that Minasi's writing style now forces serious administrators to waste a great deal of time wading through the fluff. His book is one of, if not the thickest and it's not because of the technical information. Just like his articles in magazine publications, his writing is oriented towards new or amateur administrators. I think if you have 2 of, or the 3 books I mentioned previously, you can skip Minasi's Server 2003 book. The single area where Mark has an edge over the other books is his discussion of compatibility with older, downlevel or non-MS workstation client OSes such as DOS, Mac, Workstation, etc. This same information was covered in his earlier NT 4.0 and Win2000 books, so if you have any of them, you're ok there.

Obsolete information, badly written explanations of Mac technology, and general "macs can't do that" comments. I'll flip through Windows books at the store and shudder at the nonsense they spread about Macs.

Best handbook for programmers EVER!
The authors were very modest in choosing their title.Yes, indeed, they focus on the scenario of writing reusable libraries, and write from the perspective of two of the designers of the .NET Framework. However, the utility of this book goes far beyond what the title implies.
invaluable to developers of class libraries, components, and frameworks--whether .NET or not.

Very good learning version
This affordable version of SPSS allows students to learn how to use SPSS without investing a large amount of money on the full version ($600 or so).This version is limited in the number of variables and cases it can store, so students looking to perform serious analysis would be better off to purchase the SPSS Graduate Pack.

Not for graduate students
Unfortunately I didn't see the part about the student version being limited to 50 variables and 1500 cases until I'd bought it.The class I'm taking uses far more variables than that.I am wiser now.

Okay for absolute beginner
Not bad, but definitely for absolute beginners, and some materials not truly oop oriented.Very little coverage of database applications or web applications; out of step with current development.

Absolutely superb
I am a huge ADO.NET nut and David's first book was absolutely priceless. After his last book, he set a very high bar that was going to be hard to meet, yet that's exactly what he did.
Good, but not as good as his former book
I was just a tad bit disappointed because his former book was so helpful to me. Still a lot of users who develop windows form applications use Access, but I see the big push to make everything SQL server. Though I like SQL Server, but in most small apps for what I do it is highly unnecessary.

Larson is the Best
Great, easy to follow.Mr. Larson is the best SQL 2005 RS/BI author in my opinion.Also, I attended some of his sessions at DevCon 2006 in Orlando.He is very knowledgable and approachable.He takes the time during and after sessions to answer all questions.

Zen and the art of Reporting Services
SQL Server Reporting Services is a comprehensive, server-based reporting solution which provides support to develop, manage, and deliver reports on different mediums and platforms. Brian Larson in his latest book, "SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services" has done an excellent job in making the case for SQL Server Reporting Services (SRSS) by providing comprehensive knowledge to jump start with SQL server reporting services.

A Must Have
I have seen some reviews that said this can't be used to learn Photoshop from the ground up, but that is untrue, because I used this book to teach myself Photoshop with absolutely no prior knowledge whatsoever, and it does a wonderful job of explaining everything. It pretty much covers
