1-0 out of 5 stars Errors and omissions
The discussion on how to use the new SqlCacheDependency class is wrong. The book claimed (in page 623) that "with SQL Server 2005 no setup work is needed and no external objects must be added to the Database.". In reality, you need to setup several permissions in the database side. In addition, you have to make sure that the compatibility level of your database is set to 90.
5-0 out of 5 stars Does what it says on the cover
This book is an excellent introduction to the facilitites available in ASP.NET 2.0. It covers simple topics such as HTML controls, WebControls, page lifecycle etc, and also goes a little deeper to discuss details of providers, personalisation & master pages to name but a few. There are also several chapters devoted to displaying data using ADO.Net which are useful. There's also a good chapter on ASP.NET security. Most if not all of this information is available on the web, however having a single book that covers these topics is well worthwhile - it's a great book to have by your side when you are writing ASP.NET sites.

4-0 out of 5 stars Broad and deep coverage
The two books of this series (Core Reference & Advanced Topics) offer broad and deep coverage of ASP.NET.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excel 2003 All-in-One Desk Reference for Dummies
Excel 2003 All-in-One Desk Reference for Dummies is a great overall book for Excel 2003.It will get you going on Excel 2003 even if you have a minimal amount of experience in Excel.Introduces you to formulas, charts, pivot tables and other subjects that most people need in order to fully utilizing the power of Excel.Written very well and easy to understand.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners and not for reference
I rate this book poor. It is badly laid out. Unless you already know how to use Excel, this book would be of no value to you. It's impossible to find anything, and not enough relevent illustrations. The For Dummies series is off my list of reference books. Save your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars There's tons of useful information in this book.
I use Excel at work all the time and this book is always within an arm's reach. The formulas and functions chapters are especially helpful -- as are the ones on PivotTables, building Macros, and sharing data with other programs. If you're only going to buy one book on Excel, buy this one! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Microsoft Windows Books
I ordered these books online and they came in very good shape and were delivered on time.Very informative and helpful books.

3-0 out of 5 stars Boring but useful
I used this book to pass the 70-290 exam.
2-0 out of 5 stars Thick, shallow, and full of technical errors
Thick, shallow, and full of technical errors.Don't go here lookng for answers, if you find them, they are equally likely to be from some prior (probably re-edited) windows 2000 manual, and sometimes just wrong!I read it from cover to cover...and it didn't get any better.

3-0 out of 5 stars Helps to get the job done
This book alone covers about 85% of what you need to know to pass the test.I would recommend a cbt or transender on the topic as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book just give you a background of window 2003 feature
I have this book because I purchase MCSE Training kit (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0735619530/ref=pd_rvi_gw_2/102-4874099-2083325?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=283155) in order to prepare to take an MCSE certificate. Currently I just finish reading this book. I didn't review an MCSE training kit because I didn't read the other three books.
1-0 out of 5 stars not a good book, not at all
I would like to give it a zero star if it were there. I read it through but it totally disappointed me. it left so much out, totally uncovered, such as terminal server, which is listed as examinable part. Even the 70-270 book from microsoft press is a total rubbish. The parts covered are not deep enough to help you understand for the exam. For those who work on MSCE, I highly recommend sybex books in stead of Microsoft RUBBISH. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Textbook
This was my college text for an intro level class within my information systems major at the University of Texas at Tyler. While I was first a bit worried over the sheer size of the book I soon came to love it.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as some may suggest...
This book is too dense, basicly all you are getting is one third of the book on the subject. However, the explanation is well written and clear, but it follows few chapters after given example code.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Book on C (Emphasis on Beginners)
This book is used in FSU's CGS 3408 course: "Introduction to Programming with the C Language."In the preface, the Deitels state that this book is for everyone (beginners to experts) who want to learn C.They've made a very good stab at that goal, but realistically, I'd have to say that those who are professional programmers in other languages will find this book too long for their needs. For beginners (and even those moderately versed in other languages), this is an excellent book.I really have only three minor gripes about it:

5-0 out of 5 stars Develop Advanced Financial Modeling Skills
As a university teacher of strategic corporate finance and optimal investment, I have watched the financial industry analytics transcend hand calculation with financial calculators to financial modeling with spreadsheet software. Depending on whether the financial specialty is in corporate or banking/brokerage, the job skills requirement can range from corporate cost control to optimal portfolio design. Thus, modeling skills services both company research and financial planning.

4-0 out of 5 stars A must if you need to pass the first time.
Depending on your experience this may be the only book you need to pass the 70-721 exam. I did require additional material but this book was certainly the major reason that I passed the exam with a 917 score.
5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding XP
It is worth every Penny you spend. I will refer back to itfor years.

3-0 out of 5 stars Workplace Compliance Purchase
I am within hours of retiring from "Corporate America." Then, why would I purchase such a boring piece of reading material? The answer is, the yuppies who run the company think they are doing us a favor by making us learn about technology that will be obsolete in weeks. Even worse they require the cost of that training to come out of our own pockets. I needed a training package to get a better review and a small bonus. After taxes the bonus was only three times the cost of the book. Whoopee! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars basic review of computer applications
This is a great book, very user friendly for the novice computer user.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book. Highly Recommended!
I just finished using this book in a self-paced, college course. It's an excellent one.I never had any trouble following the step-by-step instuctions and I rarely had to ask my instructor for any help. The only drawback is if you want to go back and do any of the exercises over again months later as a review, you can't, because you need the data files from the course. I guess I could have saved all of them but that would have taken about 30 floppy disks which is the only option I had. The Access database alone is huge. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book , worth to read
This book is designated as the textbook for our master's level management modeling class. The author concerntrated on the application of Microsoft Solver to solve various of optimazation problems that we freqently faced in the real business opreations. Overall, this is good book for entry-level management modeling study.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well Written, Clear, and To The Point
Yes, this book is expensive. Yes, the subject matter is rather dry. But if you don't expect dry subject matter, what are you doing in graduate school?
5-0 out of 5 stars Solid text that really teaches decision analysis
Since Lotus 1-2-3 burst onto the scene almost thirty years ago, spreadsheet software has been a vital tool in aiding business decision-making.There are many books offering instruction in learning to use a spreadsheet. Some books promise to teach business processes but end up delivering a course on basic spreadsheeting with only a passing nod to the business processes the student was expecting to learn.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best C++ book!
Excellent book. You need some feedback before you read it, but this book is complete and good reference.

3-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable great book
The reading is tedious, and in my opinion he does not cover some concepts thoroughly, such as casting. On the other hand, it is "The" C++ reference, although it isn't perfect.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent quick guide to Microsoft Office
This 453-page book is written for beginning and intermediate users of Microsoft Office 2004. It blends short, well-written sections on the various parts of Office 2004 with screen shots and other graphics that show you visually how to do things. This is a winning combination and makes learning about Office 2004 easy and fun.I also was pleased to find short "tips" following the various discussions that further enhanced your ability to use the feature being discussed.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best ASP.NET books
I finished reading this book yesterday and I am very pleased with it. The author starts by explaining some programming basics for both languages (VB.NET and C#). Then he explains ASP controls (html controls and validation controls). During the rest of the book, he develops a web-based intranet and explains many features of ASP such as ADO.NET, DataGrid and DataList controls, DataSets, etc. There is a chapter where the author explains how we can build a shopping cart and connect it to paypal which I found very interesting. The code is very neat and easy to understand. I totally recommend this book to those who would like to learn ASP.NET as well those who want to expand their ASP.NET knowledge.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best .Net Book
The best thing about this book is someone like me who is new to the .DOT NET was able to learn & the paralell comparison between the VB & C# code is excellent. The only disappointment is that with the text book I was expecting a CD with Adobe Reader version as well. Which I did not recieve.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sitepoint ASP.NET

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book on programming new features
This book is clearly written and I feel it does a good job of covering the major new features of SQL Server 2005 well enough so you can get up to speed quickly and save enough time versus puzzling things out using just the online materials that come with SQL Server 2005 to easily justify the purchase price and reading time.A number of people with expertise in various aspects of SQL Server collaborated on this book, and the value of the information in each area reflects the depth of expertise.
5-0 out of 5 stars great way to explore new features of sql server 2005 for professionals
i was looking forward for this title recently and i am happy to have read it finally. this title digs in deep in most of the subjects that i was not able to find out by myself with my sql server 2000 knowledge and helped me a lot while getting into the details of advanced olap and reporting services.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
Well, I have been digging into Andrew and Stephen's latest work for a few days now and have been very happy with the results. This book is comprehensive and covers the gambit of topics, including some favorites of mine such as T-SQL, XML, CLR integration, Service Broker, Integration Services, Reporting Services, SMO, and OLAP. Sure, I may be a geek for saying this, but I am looking forward to reading it cover to cover. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful to have on hand
I just got a new computer and needed a new Dummies book because I'm a dummy.I have already used this book to solve several problems.Windows XP is quite different from Windows 98 so this is a must have on my desk.Easy to use.

5-0 out of 5 stars INDISPENSIBLE
Don't know what I would do without a book like this, there are no others available.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
Being a total dummy about computers, I bought this book so I could learn to use the Word program included on it.It's just wonderful. You can go page by page for a testbook-lesson esperience, or just look up what you need to do in the index.I would buy this book again if this one were destroyed.I recommend it to you. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars C# Prof. A 1300 page turner!
Great book, good examples.I don't think they missed anything in this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too much handholding
This book is a decent introduction to the C# language, in a very slow, very hold-your-hand sort of way. The later chapters on using C# in .NET applications aren't terribly useful because they follow the same overly simplified style of explanation and ultimately run out of space for advanced features.
3-0 out of 5 stars Pros and Cons
PROS:I liked the book, and learned a lot from it.It is both a very broad and deep view of C# and .NET, covering more than most other books. It has good explanations of things like delegates, properties, indexers, and differences between C# and java, C++ and other languages. The section on ADO (SQL Database classes) is especially good, tho it goes pretty fast. This is a professional book, not for beginning programmers, but especially good if you know java or C++ already (I know both, so it helped even more).

4-0 out of 5 stars Framework Design Unraveled - Recommended for Developers & Architects
In the object oriented design and architecture, business objects are simply the entities which abstracts the physical entities in the domain that the component is written to represent. In "Expert C# Business Objects" Rocky Lhotka goes above and beyond this definition and walk us through the different steps of encapsulation, abstraction, behavior representation and business object implementation with distributed systems.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good one
If you are someone who wants to learn the application design process and how to apply your Programming and Software Engineering knowledge, this is the one for you to start with.
3-0 out of 5 stars Some good ideas in the book, but only for a certain type of application and subsequent design
Truly, I think this book is an introduction to Mr. Lhotka's CSLA Framework, and not a text for designing expert business objects. Discovering and designing business objects for an application are tough exercises that are not covered in much detail here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worthy of Scott Meyers
Bill did an excellent job with this book in the vein of the notoriously popular Effective C++ by Scott himself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Use C#? Use this book.
In spite of being an experienced C# hobbyist and in spite of having taken extensive classes on the language, I still found Effective C# by Bill Wagner to be very useful. Structured similarly to Effective C++ the book gives concise explanations and samples of 50 best practices for C# programming. Via Intermediate Language and pseudo code, the book shows what the compiler and .NET are doing under the covers. It then demonstrates how to effectively use the language constructs while also presenting C# programming idioms that go beyond the built in language. For example, the book clearly presents the idea of making all value types immutable - a concept that is used by the language (for strings, for example) but is not directly supported by any specific keywords or really called out in the any C# documentation.
5-0 out of 5 stars A**must buy** for any C# developer
This book is a revelation. If you want to improve your code, you need this book.Bill Wagner's advice is directly contradictory to what you'll find on the web, but unlike the so-called experts that write those fluffy articles that you find in Google searches, he can actually prove his assertion via ILM disassembly. For instance, he supports the use of the foreach statement, and tells and _shows_ you exactly why it's the best way to iterate over an aggregate, as opposed to the old for statement, which he also proves is the _worst_ way to do an iteration.
