Excellent bookbut get the new edition
This Cookbook is the best selling of the Active Directory books.But you should know that there is a new Second Edition simply called Active Directory Cookbook that was revised by Joe Richards, the MVP and it has a lot of good stuff on topics like ADAM and updates for SP2.So get that.

Academic/math background of author clearly evident - great presentation
As a C-family programmer with a math background, I found the author's approach to presentation to be excellent: in 3 critical ways.
Must Have
Brushes off the cobwebs for all the basics that we all forget in the first chapters, and gradually brings you up to date on the new features. Delves deep in the latter chapters!

Useful VB 2005 Book
This is a doorstop size book that contains a lot of very useful information, explanation and guidance.

Great reference book
It covers a lot of tools and solution to problems that I didn't know about, but it still can't replace Microsoft's knowledge base.

Microsoft Windows XP Professional Resource Kit
This book is amazing for learning Windows xp Professional.Even though I have a different version of XP it helped with tweaking the computer's graphics and multimedia.It is good book if you are staying at home on a rainy day and want to tinker with your pc.The book is thorough and covers installation to troubleshooting.I haven't read all of it yet because it is like a encyclopedia but from what I have seen it has a lot to offer a newbie or someone who is more advanced.

It is useful, but....
The book is a good reference, but I find it a bit more than needed for a beginer, while less than an admin would want. The tools are very helpful as well.

Visual Basic.NET How to Program, Second Edition
I had to buy this book for a programming class in Visual Basic.Net.I've previsously had a course in Visual Basic and got an A so I am not new to programming.I say all that to say, this book falls far short of what I hoped I was getting for $100.I've typed in some of the example progams word for word and cannot get a simple program to work, generating random numbers, for example.I'm at the point now where I'll have to go shopping for another book in this subject, the Deitel book is nothing but frustration to me!

Bottom Line.....................The Deitels rock!!

Hard to like
Remember when you had to read classical literature, and it seemed like the author wouldn't change paragraphs for pages at a time, and it was hard to keep your place, pay attention, or care? Well, this book is exactly like that. It is chock full of "information", I'll give it that. Problem is, their examples DON'T WORK. I'm trying to do SQL database management using the code from the book for a template, and it doesn't function whatsoever. I've wasted hours because this book is worthless as a reference, even worse as a textbook.

Converted a hard-core C programmer to the STL!
I thought this book was great. It gave me allot of good ideas and showed me how to things I didn't know how to before. But the real selling point was that I loaned it to a coworker who was a hard-core C programmer. He scoffed at C++ and OOP in general; making statements like "Everything I need to do can be done in C". After reading three items in the book he was questioning his thinking and trying new things. His latest project is not only in C++ but it's also embedded in the STL. He's taken quite a liking to it and has learned a lot of new things.
Standard Template Advice
This book will help you make better progamming decisons when it comes time to use the STL in a project.Scott Meyer is one of the best writers on the subject of programming. Here he shows you how to best use the Standard Template Library and avoid some of it's dangers. His examples are clear and help you better understand the rationale for his advice. His writing style is terse but pleasant.
good STL book
I bought this book in a hurry for the purpose of using STL functions for my programming project. It does have some very good and useful advises and tips for dealing with various problems, and is not assuming the reader of it is too much of a entry level programmer.

Big...but it reads like a novel!
Great book and easy to read! Author explain theory in basicterms and then, he give scripts or examples of how it should work or be written at TSQL level. Index's book it's almost perfect; for being a 1400 pages book it is not difficult to find any topic on it.You will find a lot of nice SQL 2000 tuning tips which add an extra value to the book itself. Could be used as a MCDBA prep. book and of course, in your job or if you're into Databases Admin. and Design business.
Fantastic book
I was suprised but the book is really good for both beginers as well as experts. I learned a lot from this book even thought I have been working with sql server for a long time.
The best there is...ok so now i think Sams is better than Wrox...lol
Well I needed a crash course in SQL server management and some T-SQL.I attacked this book head-on. The book is very comprehensive and i am very amazed. It really is a complete guide to the GUI on SQL server. If you want some hard core T-SQL guidance then get another book...in addition. Sams teach yourself t-sql in 21 days is great.

More for high school kids....but....
The "but" is after reading the first chapter of this book and looking through the contents there are some useful projects. I've been using Publisher since 2000 for a newsletter and brochure for a non-profit group and not much more. But now I can see several new uses for the program and I'll give them a try. Granted it's not a hard program to master the bare essentials but I think this book may open a much wider range of uses for this user. The only bad thing is the steep price for the book itself. COOKING WITH C#!!
Are you an experienced C# or .NET developer? If you are, then this book is for you! Authors Jay Hilyard and Stephen Teilhet, have done an outstanding job of writing a second edition of a book that was put together based on programming problems that the authors ran into when they were first learning C# as well as during their continued use of it.
This book saved my life - multiple times!
I actually bought the first edition of the book and I loved it so much that I am getting the second edition.There were several times that I needed a quick tip or trick on how to solve a problem and I found the answer here.Excellent use of your money.

ONE OF THE BEST
This is the only book that even mentions "closures". I have all the C# 2005 books by "Troelsen", Wrox book, Microsoft's "Visual C# The Language", etc. and none of them talk about "closures".

Nearly perfect, and surely the best prepguidethere is available
I've used two preparation guides, this one and the one from Sybex. MSPress is definitely the best of these two books. Covers it all, the sybex version is too superficial and just does not cover it all, it actually lacks some important material.
Best Comprehensive Book Available but not without faults
I used this book as a primary study guide for the 2003 upgrade exams and although it doesn't cover all the material, it is an excellent book and in my humble opinion the single best source of prepartion.

This book covers the essentials skills to upgrade to your certification to Windows Server 2003.However, it does cover many topics that you already knew from your Windows 2000 experience, which sometimes are topics you don't want to read about because for the most part, you expected to read only about the improvements and changes from Windows 2000 to Windows 2003.In spite of this, it is a GREAT source of information for people with little experience with Windows 2000. ... Microsoft is great with software but not with documentation
I ordered this book as well as Special Addition Using Ms FP 2003The only FP2003 book you'll ever need.This is the book to get!!The microsoft book does not really do a good job of fully explaining the topic.To me it was very confusing.The other book I just mentioned is 3 times as thick and goes from very basic to very advanced.So as you grow the book will be there for all the information.I will be returning this book and keeping the Special Addition.

Does not provide directions for "Step-by-Step" creation of your own original web site. It continously refers to the example on the included CD so you recreate that website.

Not for beginners!
Actually, this book a great book for beginners.
Complex Patterns simply explained
If you have been programming for a few years, you would have used a few patterns without even knowing it. Encapsulating rules into a class is a classic one - also called the command pattern. But, describing the concept in a common way is what makes communication easier among the community. Patterns are documented approaches to solving common problems in software design. Microsoft's Enterprise Solution patterns Using Microsoft .Net: Version 2.0 comes off with a great deal of success in explaining the various patterns in a simple and lucid way.

Great Solaris System Admin Book
have used this book to upgrade my Solaris Admin certification to Solaris 10. I've had a few versions of Solaris certifications, and I can say it for sure that this is the best SCSA certification book I have read so far. The author does an excellent job in staying true to the exam objectives and yet presenting the material as a cohesive course in basic Solaris 10 system administration. There is a perfect logical flow. The author starts each topic from scratch and covers it to an adequate depth, while defining and explaining all terms and concepts on the way. That makes it a self contained book.
Not really impressed
I've taken and been a certified Sun Solaris administrator for many years.I decided to upgrade my certification to Solaris 10 and purchased this book as a reference.It's a good reference, but was not really a contributing factor in preparing for the exam.
Passed Both the Exams
Passed both the exams (310-200 and 310-202) by studying just from this book. Feels great! Along the way, this book cleared many doubts and confusions that I had. I'm very pleased with my score on the exam, and with this book. Great book! It's going to stay in my shelf.

This book teaches you every thing about the SharePoint in details it's a great help for the beginners.

Good, but impractical information
While covering a lot of infomration, this book still did not answer basic questions about how to use Sharepoint.It is geared more for the tech/programmer rather than the end-user.

Simply the best book on the subject.
After purchasing 6 others on the subject of Windows Sharepoint Services, I find that this has the best information on the broad subject of WSS.The book is not perfect but its a fairly easy read and the examples are some what real world. ... Read more

Not-so-hot
Using Microstoft Project 2003 by Tim Pyron
The only book that provides answers to tough questions
I have three other project books on my shelf but whenever I run into a tough situation, this is THE book I go to.No other books out there (not even the self proclaimed bible) explains features as in depth as this book does.I especially like the section on leveling and how it explains the 7 factors used to resolve conflicts.This is a must have for all serious users of MS Project.

More Project than I thought possible
I picked this up as I was in the middle of several complex Project plans for network upgrades and migrations, as well as a mass rollout of Office 2003.I'd used previous versions of Project before but never really learned how to use it. Read more

Oriented Towards the Implementer, Not the User
This work contains over 800 pages of densly packed information.However at least 600 of those pages are directed towards system administrators who are implementing MS Project Server, not towards Project Managers who wish to use the tool.
A Brilliant Guide for the Advanced User
The Unleashed series is for Advanced users and System Administrators, so this book is a shining example of that series. Covering aspects from a real-world perspective, the authors have captured what it's like to really use Project Server and how to squeeze every last drop of productivity out of the software.
Too many propellers
I bought this book hoping to learn MS Project Server workflow from a functional utilization perspective.While the book covers the features, it fails miserably to connecting the dots in a clear manner.This has diminished this book to a reference guide.In the next edition, take note.Make the security model more clear. Make the portfolio feature more clear, etc., etc., etc.

Excellent information
The more I dive into the MCSE path the more I relize there is not one book that covers everything you need to know for the exam.This book does an excellent job of explaining the topics that it covers.That said it covers about 85% of what you need to know.Nearly 50% of the test was on RRAS.
