3-0 out of 5 stars It's an OK book
The people are right that this book could have been much less thick if it wasn't for the examples. Personally, I thought they were useful. Keep in mind that they have complete examples in both C# and VB.NET, and all that code wastes a lot of space.
1-0 out of 5 stars Very Little Practical Information
Over 70 Percent of this book is code listings (much of it auto generated) that is available in the sample code. Why generate your own database when pubs and northwind provide adequate examples. If you want to learn how to design a database there are ample books out there that are quite good. Most of the examples have very little real world application. As an example of practical concise real world examples look at "Building Web Solutions" by Esposito. He provides four times the useful information in 350 pages that this book provides in 1200.Look elswhere if you want good insight and practical information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete! Well Documented! Superb!
I found myself searching for a book that covered the TreeView control and others in great detail. I needed a book that would give detailed examples of how to use the advanced features of Windows Forms Controls and this was it. I use C# but appreciate the fact that both the VB.Net and C# codes is included as I never know if I will be asked to work on a VB.Net project. I have several other C# books that documented the basics of how to program C#, but this is the first that really showed me how to use the power of Win Forms to build a user friendly UI. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A better quick reference than MSDN online.
I bought this book because, after using the JDK javadocs for Java for years, I found MSDN's .net online documentation unfriendly in comparison. For the past year, I've been using this book as my first reference, before checking anywhere else.I've found I can usually get what I am looking for the quickest in this reference.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very good reference text.
This book is not a "teach yourself C#"; it is only a reference text. If you are experienced in another programming language, however, you can use this reference to easily find the syntax required by C#. The book is a quick reference useful for programmers who like to have a paper copy reference on their desktops. By the publisher's own admission, it is not an exhausted reference. 4-0 out of 5 stars C# in a Nutshell - Supports my day-to-day efforts
In my opinion O'reilly continually puts out the best technical books and "C# in a Nutshell" further supports their excellent reputation. As usual with O'reilly's other offerings in their "in a Nutshell" series they leave out the fluff and provide just the facts. This approach makes "C# in a Nutshell" easy to recommend if you've already gotten your feet wet in C#. On the other hand if you're still green you're better off with books that offer a traditional tutorial approach and then come back when you're ready to get into some advanced topics or need a reference to the namespaces and C# implementation.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent guide to what shouldn't requite a guide in the first place
This is an excellent and well-written book on a topic that - sadly - shouldn't require a guide to be understood. The complexity and obscurity of Windows security APIs makes it somewhat of a futile attempt. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't be one of the few elite programmers who do comprehend it. In other words, highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Deep and well written
This book does an excellent job of explaining Windows security at both the architectural and code levels. It's well written, even to the point of being entertaining at some points. Which is a lot to say for a security book.
5-0 out of 5 stars At last a serious look at Windows security
Keith Brown's book is a refreshing change from the 'stick in something about security in a side-bar' approach taken by so many authors. Finally a book which explains lucidly what amounts to a very complex topic; and does so in an understandable and enjoyable fashion. If there were 6 stars on the rating scale then it would get a 6... ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Be Careful If You Use 2003 R2!
So far, this book has been very informative and helpful. The authors do a good job of telling you just what you need to know -- nothing more, nothing less.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good for Windows Admins
This is a good supplement to those who own 'Linux for Windows Administrators'.My only complaint is that it tends to rely on GUIs or webmin for some configuration (leaving out what they are configuring). If you're using RHEL or Fedora, you're in good shape but if you're using another Linux OS, you're left in the dark.Other than that, it is a wonderful reference and was invaulable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply unbeatable
This is an amazing book. It takes you though all the various permutations of Windows and Linux interoprerability. It pulls no punches on the good and bad points of each system.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excelent Migration Guide for Exchange 2003 !!!
If you are about to tackle a Migration from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2003 or from Exchange 2000 to Exchange Server 2003, this book is the guide you have been looking for. The author will tell you what you need to know in order to plan your migration and design the new Windows/Exchange 2003 environment. The book lists all the tools out there that can help you make your life a lot easier and it will take you through the process in a step-by-step fashion. On top of all the author does a wonderful work in aticipating most posible questions from the reader. I migrated from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2003 two servers in the same Active Directory Forest but in two different locations. All in a single weekend. I give it 5 Stars and a standing ovation. This book is a must have tool for a smooth Migration to Exchange 2003.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Resource!!!
We just completed our migration to Exchange 2003, and this book helped us plan the process, gave us a solid outline on how to test the migration process, and walked us through our live production migration. The book also helped us better understand the administration tools in Exchange 2003 along with tips on ongoing maintenance and management practices that we have put in place. This was the best IT book I've ever owned, packed with great information! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Mini-recipes for WSH
If you are familiar with O'Reilly's cookbook books you will be familiar with the format. First the author presents a problem, then a set of solutions and a some description of how the solution works. This book has a similar format but the recipes are more small and the explanations more terse. The author expects that you know a lot about the Windows Script Host to start with and are looking for some help here and there to get through common problems.
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent, detailed and thorough reference
Now in a newly updated and expanded second edition, Windows Admin Scripting Little Black Book by Microsoft Windows expert Jesse M. Torres is a comprehensive and superbly organized, 464-page instructional reference and resource. Focusing on immediate solutions to difficult problems with security, information gathering; automatic task scheduling; basic information concerning Windows 2000/XP/2003 architecture, and a great deal more, Windows Admin Scripting is an excellent, detailed and thorough reference which is especially recommended to the attention of systems administrators.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Reference
The first edition of this book has been out of print for some time. Mine is ragged from flipping through it. Covering the most common areas of scripting an administrator would be concerned with, you have the additional option of choosing the method best for you from the multiple solutions provided. VBS is covered lots of places, but Batch is becoming a hard topic to find good information on- KiXtart? Forget about it- until the first edition of this book hit, there was little mention of KiXtart in any book! Highly recommended! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars It does the job but I want more
If you a looking for a fast guide so that you can produce simple music withou much thinking, try this one. I used it ans it gave me some insights, but I really missed more in-depth explanations of key concepts, and more explanations about the consequences of my tweaks. The tutorials as much more "do this and then do that", than "do this, and this will happen, otherwise, this will happen because of this", which I prefer.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not really what i needed but........
The book is great, but for the newest of the newest users of reason. Also, it is of utmost importance to have some sort of midi controlling device in your posession before buying this book, as the book references the useage of your "assumed" midi controller. So, if you dont have one, you will find yourself skipping several large sections of the text.
5-0 out of 5 stars Einstein would have loved this book...
"Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius -- and a lot of courage -- to move in the opposite direction (Albert Einstein)."This book makes the complex seem really simple.I'd recommend this book for a couple of reasons: 1) finally, a book that EXPLAINS the knobs and faders in layman's terms!; 2) it doesn't read like a typical book, in that the author makes minimal use of text and relies heavily on graphics (a picture IS worth 1,000 words); 3) the graphics are optimally labeled/captioned; 4) it follows a logical progression, rarely introducing you to concepts that are overwhelming without having first provided the fundamental building blocks/context behind them; 5) It is a great reference to keep next to you on your computer desk, even after you've mastered the basics and played with it at an intermediate level (re-readable); and 6) it is written in such a way that I embrace it, rather than loathe it, and it simply inspires me to sit down with the program and jump the hurdles like an Olympic gold-medalist.The only thing I wish this book had is a Glossary. But I can live without that.I'd highly recommend this book to Reason 3.0 users at a beginner to intermediate level. Please feel free to disagree with my opinion; let us compare opinions, invite a few more points of view, and debate, like the humans we are. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Non-Working Disk
The disk that came with the book is a data disk only, and does not contain the program that created the data. That is why the data disk is not a workable disk, unless you have The Medical Manager installed on your computer! The book is too geared to be used with the Medical Manager Software Program, and is difficult to read it as a stand alone book.
4-0 out of 5 stars Medical Manager review
I am an instructor for the Medical Manager class and have been for over 5 years.I have used almost every version possible with the Medical Manager. This is a fairly good book for students to learn from.As long as the person reads the instructions and then looks at the exercises, they should have NO problems. However, if the person just looks at the exercise and does not read the material, they may have difficulty. Some of the exercise/pictures are different then the actual reading part but not too many.Overall this book makes it fairly simple to learn this program.

1-0 out of 5 stars not very good
Confusing to follow instructions for data entry.

4-0 out of 5 stars In a world with few Windows-specific options, this is a helpful forensics book
I decided to read and review three digital forensics books in order to gauge their strengths and weaknesses: "File System Forensic Analysis" (FSFA) by Brian Carrier, "Windows Forensics" (WF) by Chad Steel, and "EnCase Computer Forensics" (ECF) by Steve Bunting and William Wei.All three books contain the word "forensics" in the title, but they are very different. If you want authoritative and deeply technical guidance on understanding file systems, read FSFA.If you want to focus on understanding Windows from an investigator's standpoint, read WA.If you want to know more about EnCase (and are willing to tolerate or ignore information about forensics itself), read ECF.
5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, the right book for Windows forensics
I have to say, like the next geek, I get frustrated by the lack of Linux/Unix use on the desktops of the corporate world; however, the fact is that Windows desktops outnumber Linux/Unix desktops by way more than 100:1. For this reason, it has been very frustrating to me that so many security books focus on Linux/Unix. I don't care if it's the best platform (though I agree); it's not the most common and we need tools on and for Windows.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent focus on corporate security
Just read through my copy of this book.I do Cisco work as a CCSE and SANS certified network security specialist, but have been called on to do some investigations at work as the resident "security geek".

1-0 out of 5 stars Outdated and mostly fluff
Basically, this guide will seem very much like it was written by Microsoft's marketing and bribe department. Not much substance and very little in the way of teaching you how to utilize Windows Media Center 2005 fully or how to use it when building your own Media PC.

My first purchase of a Media Version computer left me completely baffeled as no instructions came with it. This book is not a step by step 1,2,3 how to guide as I expected. But rather it is an in depth description of how XP Media works, what it is designed to do. For me, a beginner owner, it is extremely helpful. It answered a lot of my questions.

1-0 out of 5 stars Complete waste of money
If you own MCE 2005, don't bother with this book. After "reading" this book (which took about 30 minutes), I learned absolutely nothing more than I learned by playing with the menus and options in MCE.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great intro to VB.Net but poor certification prep
If you are new to Visual Basic.Net then this book is great for getting a basic understanding of the language. If you are using it to introduce yourself to the language then I would highly recommend it.However, this book miserably fails its' title in preparing for the 70-306 exam. 2-0 out of 5 stars Frustrating
This book is chalk full of errors.I am not at all convinced that anyone went back through and actually tried to reproduce the examples and assignments found in this book.If you like a challenge and enjoy debugging someone else's code, this is the book for you.If, however, you feel that your time is better spent actually studying for the exam I would skip this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK
This book is alright, but it does not take into consideration all OS's on which the code might be running (xp users beware on the globalization chapter) and some of the end of chapter questions don't even seem to be based on data discussed in the chapter. That all being said, there aren't many other options exam prep books for 70-306 and this one is at least easy to follow along with although I don't think it is in depth enough for the exam. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars ABOVE AVERAGE
For myself and those before me that have purchased these 'FOR SENIOR.....'books...we are all above average for knowing a 'good thing' when we see it!I purchased 'WINDOWS XP and MORE WINDOWS XP' SENIORS.....I also bought Windows XP For Dummies..which is good, alittle more technical and I started hating the () = COVERED IN CHAPTER.....so you have to mark where you are just to find info that is somewhere else in the book.SENIOR books: large print...PICTURES...showing 'how to', little tests, to check comprehension...with page numbers to locate the answer if you don't remember........NO MATTER WHAT YOUR AGE...IF YOU CAN READ AND WANT TO GET STARTED (or refresh) ON A COMPUTER....YOU WILL NOT GO WRONG WITH THESE 'SENIOR' BOOKS...6 TO WHATEVER AGE......................
4-0 out of 5 stars Windows XP for Seniors
This book is quite easy to use and contains a lot of useful information on Win XP. I am 79 years old and I found it very helpful in learning how to use Win XP.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful and Easy to Understand
There is a wealth of resources for seniors on the internet. No one should miss out because of a lack of knowledge about computers. This large print volume is written in easy to follow, non technical language. As a legal aid hotline attorney and owner of an online medical supplies business, I am frequently talking with and advising seniors. Many of the people I talkt with say they wish they were more computer literate.I will recommend this book to them. As with any computer book, the material gets outdated quickly. Also, this book deals with Windows and many people find Macs are the most user friendly computer. So, those who have not yet purchased their computer may want to look into getting a Mac. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great For ASP.NET and its XML Features
This is an excellent book covering the XML features of ASP.NET. It is very professional but, not for any beginner. It has the first 2 chapters which pretty much cover the basics but, throughout the rest of the book you need to know what you are doing. It is very detailed but is not really "step-by-step" like 1-2-3...It will walk you through how to do something through reading; so if your not one of those people who don't like to read, I wouldnt fully recommend this book to you. It shows a many screenshots in there so it makes it fairly simple to follow along. The book has almost 500 pages that are completely dedicated to the XML features of ASP.NET. If you are willing to take out the reading glasses and read a little bit. Overall, its an outstanding book!
4-0 out of 5 stars ASP.NET 2.0 XML explained
This book was very useful. It covered a wide variety of topics and explained most topics very well.I would have liked the book to get into some more subjects a little more in depth, but when you are covering so many topics that is a little difficult to do.This book did cover a lot of the new XML classes in the 2.0 framework.I would have liked some more info on the sql server 2005 xml stuff, particulary xquery. The book talked about OPENXML and even made the statement that you should use .nodes for these types of queries now.But it made no mention of how to do so.Overall, this was a very useful text.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book to understand xml 2.0 features
I would recommend this book to anyone working on ASP.NET 2.0. XML is the integral part of .NET framework and used widely on all projects.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely necessary for any software developer or manager
This book is extremely practical. Why more people have not read it is a mystery to me. I read this early on in my career, and it has helped me identify problems early on, work around potential pitfalls, and deliver projects on time or close to on time. It has given me the courage to speak up early and often.
5-0 out of 5 stars A programming book that's actually fun to read cover to cover
This is an outstandingly good book about software construction techniques that lead to a sound, robust product. It starts with simple things like naming conventions, function layout and commenting methods, but covers the whole software development cycle of design, programming and quality assurance. Although it gives plenty of source code examples in several different programming languages, these are always short and easy to follow even for 'language foreigners'. Source code examples are only used to illustrate more general, important points, rather than specific implementation details. The author is careful not to force his personal style on you - which would be rather foolish considering the many 'religious' issues covered (naming conventions anyone? ;) ) - but presents his opinions supported by sound arguments that'll make even skeptics reconsider. The text is an easy read compared to more technical books and is covered with lots of very amusing short stories that highlight key points.
5-0 out of 5 stars The classic text for improving software construction
Most programmers cannot create reliable software. Most programmers do not construct computer programs correctly, regardless of methodology, language, platform, etc. For those who don't have a formal education in computer programming (e.g., Computer Science), or for those who don't want to forget the important concepts they did learn, Steve McConnell presents a classic text that drives all of these concepts home. McConnell covers everything involved in the process of constructing code, from methods of decomposition, to methods for prioritizing code comments. This book should be read by anyone who wants to improve the software they create. ... Read more
