2-0 out of 5 stars Lots of fluff, not much meat
The first half of the this book (200 pages) explains what the registry is and how to change the settings. The next 150 pages give some detail, but misses some very important registery keys.No where in this book does it explain how to turn off autoplay on the CD-ROM.

5-0 out of 5 stars Microsoft Windows XP Registry Guide
The Registry guide is chock full of tweaks for fine tuning the registry. If you are advanced in computers this should be the book for you. I advise you though to backup anything you do with your registry because you can really mess things up.The book points this out and gives you a better understanding of the inner workings of your computer's registry.I do think some of the concepts could have been more elaborated on but it is clearer than some books I've encountered.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not For Beginners, Mandatory for Systems Administers
Not for the beginner or the faint of heart. The registry is that thing down at the bottom of the operating system that controls what the Windows XP operating system does.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and complete.
Not only does this kit provide excellent study material, but it will alsoprove to be an invaluable reference afterward. For people (like me) whocannot afford the instructor-led courses, this kit provides the necessarytraining to not only pass the exams, but also to be a good networkengineer. Use one of the study guides just before the exam, but use thiskit to gain a thorough understanding of the material first.

2-0 out of 5 stars Check First!
I purchased this training kit mainly because it contained a 120 day evaluation copy of NT.I thought that working with NT would be much more beneficial than just reading about NT.I didn't get very far into itbefore I ran into some problems with the software. From what I did read, the information provided seems relatively well organized and informative. There is a caveat.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book that suites for anyone!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Microsoft DNS Authority
Simply put, this is the most thorough and complete text on DNS for the Windows Active Directory (Windows 2000 Server and Windows Server 2003) platform; period.
4-0 out of 5 stars A good preemptive strike book
This is the kind of book to read before things go boom, and you end up trying to decode DNS under, shall we say, less than optimal conditions:)
5-0 out of 5 stars Good text on DNS for Win2k3! Much of the same (good stuff)
As in-depth as you will get on DNS for Windows 2003. A recent reviewer stated that it's much of the same. Well, much of it really is; and if you''ve been working with DNS for as long as many of us, nothing about its operations should be new to you. The most significant "tweaks" in DNS in the past few years have been done by Microsoft, to support their AD/200x line - those features are detailed quite specifically in this book (it's what this is all about anyway). And with AD continually evolving, chapters such as Managing DNS Programmatically (with WMI completely in mind) should be of utmost importance for the practicing MS administrator (that is, if you've really read the book!) ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Needs more emphasis on modeling and historical test cases
Thin-client computing has become very popular in recent years, and this is indeed a surprise if one acknowledges the fact that it is very similar to the main-frame environments of decades past and if one considers the drive toward client-server computing in the 1990's. Advances in computing are usually thought of as a rupture with the past. The incorporation of thin-client computing is in this sense surprising. Clearly there are some advantages in using thin-client computing, at least for relatively small organizations. However, for large organizations it can be problematic, requiring meticulous attention to the administration of the servers and making sure that the client applications have been developed with thin-client environments in mind.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very complex
This book is indeed quite complex and not really geared toward beginners. The reader should have at least a basic to medium knowledge of the topic. By the way, I know that the German version is 100% more complicated and harder to understand than the English, I read both. So if you have a good command of English it might be easier for you to read and understand this book in its translated version.

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't let the title fool you
First off, this book was bought to help understand and support a Windows 2003 Terminal Server environment.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have
I've been working on Linux kernel driver for sometime and recently started porting my driver to Windows platform, which is totally new to me. I started by going through DDK online manual for over a month, during which I spent a ton of energy trying to find the Windows counterparts of the functions I'm using in Linux driver. Then I came across this book, which is saving me a lot.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for my needs given my experience.
Oney's book provided the right overview and explanations I needed to get up to speed. I didn't expect a man to pop out of his book and do the work for me. Most any serious development is never done by the purchase of a book alone. 3-0 out of 5 stars Be careful

5-0 out of 5 stars Great recipes, easy steps, wonderful results.
This book puts you on the fast track to grafting the styles of famous artists into your own work through more than five dozen easy-to-follow recipes. Not surprisingly, you'll find yourself learning more than you originally expected to about Photoshop.

2-0 out of 5 stars not-so-fast ...
Earlier this year I reviewed what many will see as the companion volume to this book ("Photoshop Blending Modes Cookbook for Digital Photographers"), written by the same author. Unfortunately, the newer publication is less useful. It seems to have been written on a pretext that it's clever to be able to duplicate what traditional artists can do. This seems - from my own personal viewpoint - to be greatly undervaluing the power of Photoshop (and similar software). Practitioners of digital fine art should (really, constructively) be looking to explore what the principles of prior and traditional art can mean within a new domain.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good resource for script samples
This book does a pretty good job of starting you out in Windows scripting.I purchased it because I am a Windows server administrator and it looked like it would help - and it did.It has to be said that the entire text of the book is on Microsoft's web site in the Technet Scriptcenter, but sometimes you want the paper in your hands as well.Another recommendation is Advanced VBScript for Microsoft Windows Administrators (also MS Press, ISBN 0735622442) if you are looking for some goodies for Windows admin like me.

1-0 out of 5 stars Arrogant behemoth achieves new level of smug conceit
Now I remember (again) why I hate Microsoft.First, they come up with a terminology all their own, then they pretend that's the standard.Like a "scripting host".Because Microsoft has a product (an add on to fix the shortcomings of DOS, as I see it) called "Windows Scripting Host", suddenly scripting hosts are standard teminology.I don't know about you, but to me a host is a machine on a network, usually a server of some kind. No, to Microsoft the Unix Boune shell is a scripting host!
5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent start on my scripting education
I'm now up to Chaper 17 (of 18) and have read, highlighted and annotated my through the book.I've learned a tremendous amount, and have impressed my boss and coworkers with the great scripts I've been able tp put together with the aid of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Windows XP
I have been teaching in our town's senior center since April '2000.This is an update to the book we have been using and find it to be an excellent source for beginners and those a little more experienced.

5-0 out of 5 stars Teach yourself visually
this is a book on windows xp and everything you ever wanted to know and how to do things with xp windows

4-0 out of 5 stars I thought it did the job.
It reviewed some pretty elementary Windows procedures, and I didn't need some of that...but then it answered the questions I had concerning differences from Windows 98 nicely. I really like the "visually" concept very much and it is super in that regard, too. I used it in conjunction with the XP tutorial that came already loaded with the software. For me, the book was a big time saver with easy reference of different subjects. Particularly good if you're "spotty" on some of your basic skills. I did think it was a little oddly organized, but everything I needed was there, and that's what counted for me. I recommend this book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars nice book to start c# and writing code for forms
I wanted to do some windows programming in C#, bougt a lot of books but found this the only one that really helped.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST Introduction to C#, WinForms. and .net 2.0
This is hands down the most clearly-written explanation of programing windows forms using C# that I have read or seen on the market.Petzold has an easy and engaging writing style. He takes the time to explain the WHAT and the WHY of what you are doing. This is a great book for someone just sitting down to Visual Studio 2005 to begin learning C# programming. His examples and walkthroughs produce useful and functioning examples of the most common aspects of Win Form programming. My only complaint is that he can only dedicate a chapter to some pretty key concepts, like data-binding.My interest is piqued, and then the chapter ends and we move on to new concepts. This is a small complaint because what he does provide is complete and enlightening. It provides a solid foundation to build off of create your own experiments.
5-0 out of 5 stars Uses the New .NET 2.0 Enhancements for a Quick Start
The Microsoft .NET program continues to expand with each release of Windows. In the .NET Framework 2.0, introduced in the fall of 2005 significant enhancements were made. These enable the programmer to implement Windows applications that are both powerful and sharp looking with considerably less effort than before. This book is somewhat of a quick introduction to writing such applications taking advantage of the new features.

5-0 out of 5 stars 2nd Edition Updated for SP1 and R2
The 2nd edition of the Windows Server 2003 Administrator's Pocket Consultant is excellent! It's nearly 600 pages focus on the core of Windows Server 2003 administration and provide immediate answers. Stanek's clear explanations helped me get my head round some of the advanced topics of system administration. In short, excellent writing style, good coverage of core system admin and highly recommended.
5-0 out of 5 stars What you need to know right now to fix the problem
The words 'Pocket Consultant' in the title are interesting. I don't have a pocket anywhere near big enought to hold this 600 page book. On the otherhand, you don't need the wheeled dolly to cart abound the whole library you needed when you were first learning how to be an administrator.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent value
Good depth - covers multiple subjects and has plenty of expert advice. Does an excellent job of covering the most important aspects of Windows administration. I was surprised by how much information is packed into ~600 pages. Concise and portable just like it says. It's the one windows book I use the most. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Setting the record straight!
The previous review posted for this book is so negative and completely misleading. The book is full of practical examples, tips, and tricks for working smarter with Windows XP.It's especially useful for people (like me) who learn visually--there are a lot of graphics to help you find your way along, and to make sure you've doneIt's certainly a lot more than the 500-page printout of a Help file the previous reviewer would have you believe.

1-0 out of 5 stars Save your money
If you can read English, follow a wizard, and have access to the Internet you do NOT need this book. This book simply repeats the information found in Help and in the Wizards. There are no troubleshooting tips on what to do when the Wizard does not work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hardly a wasted word in this comprehensive guide to XP
"Windows XP Professional Security" (WXPPS) is a great way to learn about the newest technologies produced by the software engineers in Redmond.Although the "Windows XP" title suggests a focus on desktops, WXPPS is about enterprise strategies. It's surprising so much useful information can be packed into 400 pages.5-0 out of 5 stars A first-rate resource
Collaboratively written by security and networking consultant Chris Weber and Gary Bahadur (co-founder and CIO of Foundstone, Inc., a company that provides vulnerability management software, consulting, and training services to Fortune 500 clients), Windows XP Professional Security is an extensive and reliable guide to implementing and managing as secure a Windows XP environment as current technologies make possible. Individual chapters discuss a wide range of security-related topics including password management, firewalls, ways to prepare a computer system for the worst, and easy-to-understand instructions for taking advantage of all the new Windows XP security settings and features. A first-rate resource, Windows XP Professional Security should be required reading for anyone using Windows XP for personal, professional, or corporate purposes.

1-0 out of 5 stars Stongly advise against this book
I don't like being so harsh, but I strongly advise you NOT purchase this book. My reason for this is the poor coverage of the material presented.
5-0 out of 5 stars Finally an excellent, well written indpeth wmi book
Over the years, I have purchased at least 5 wmi books. These books fall into two categories: the ones that never seem to go beyond the basics of running simple wmi queries, and those that are so far advanced, as to be virtually meaningless to a mere mortal. Now comes this book. This book is well written, with loads of analogies. It breaks the subject of WMI in to small enough chunks of information (each chapter is around 25 pages or so) so you can sit down read the book, and then do re-inforce the material by doing the labs. The fact that the person who wrote the book is a consultant, means the labs have real world application. I have taken many of the scripts from the book, and with only a few small changes, made them perform usefull work for me on my network. High points of the book: excellent coverage of WMI event driven scripts, and associators of type of queries. This has open new horizons for my scripts. Low points of the book: the labs for chapter one are lame ... I do not get this one. Every other chapter has awesome labs, but somehow chapter one kind of missed out. There are labs for chapter one, they just are not all that interesting. Would I buy this book again? You bet. In fact, I purchased 10 copies for the other network administrators at my company! I liked it that well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good information
This book had everything I was looking for and is a good source of information. ... Read more
