5-0 out of 5 stars Good work
This is a great reference guide to use when programming on Windows CE. The examples are good to use as templates. The author is good at explaining and for sure the information covered in the book is relevant. There were several pages in the book that hadn't been printed, but luckily the whole book also came in digital format on a CD with the book. The book is quite thick but I can't say there is any nonsense in it. Now I'm just waiting for an update to Windows Mobile 5.0. Hey Doughlas, get busy!
1-0 out of 5 stars .net and CE
Looks can deceive (title). It's a good book to learn all (almost) about windows CE but it's a pitty that only the last chapter treats a small piece of the .net approach. So if you are interested in learning windows CE in using the last visual studio 2005 beta this isn't the book need !

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book.
This book is awsome! This book is for someone that has a strong C++ background but does not have to have experience with the windows api in order to begin programming on a CE box. If you know the windows API a lot of this book might be review. The book also does not go into a lot of depth about the architecture of windows CE. It also only skims over sections about bluetooth, smartphone, pocket pc and other technologies that you may want to use on your ce box. Along with this book you will probably want a reference book specifically on Embeded studio and on whichever technologies you are using. For the price and the coverage this cant be beat. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
We bought this book for our Systems Administrator who had limited IIS experience. After a few days he had the website and ftp site humming. Worth a look for the novice through to the expert.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent IIS tutorial
It has been a while since I've done much with IIS, but this book got me up to speed very quickly with the latest features of IIS 6.Mitch has a very lucid writing style that makes the material easy to read.If you are looking for a comprehensive tutorial on IIS, I would highly recommend this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars A fairly good guide to IIS 6

5-0 out of 5 stars Supports XPE SP2 - New Toolkit Available
I have been asked a few times already about this book and support for XPE SP2. Windows XP Embedded advanced is still a good starting point for those getting started with XP Embedded SP2. All the XPe development basics are in this book, and the steps are good for SP1 and SP2. There is a new toolkit (Windows XP Embedded Supplemental Toolkit) available that covers the new SP2 features and other topics such as EWF API .NET programming, USB Flash boot, security, HORM, etc. There are a few new tools that also help with development. See my websites for more information: www.seanliming.com or www.sjjmicro.com
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I purchased this book after spending days trying to find information about Embedded XP on the web, before reading this book I was struggling to get a working XPe image. The book arrived and by the next day I had the image booting and running.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Purchase and worth the money
Having been a programmer for 20 years or so, I have a solid background regarding computers, and computing systems. However when faced with using XPe, it was a matter of learning the development studio and tools ASAP.This book did just that. Within6 hours of recieving the book, I had my first XPe OS in the target system running. This book is a "hands-on" adventure that reads well; it's not too simple that it doesn't get you where you need to be, yet not so techi intense that it puts your to sleep. My complements to Mr. Liming on a job well done! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Windows Media Formats
Despite it being three years since the release of this book, it remains the definitive guide to dealing with most Windows Media Streaming issues. To date, it's the single most useful book available on working with the WMA, WMV, and ASF formats. Starting with the basics of explaining the difference between streaming and downloading, the book immediately jumps into all the nitty-gritty details related to encoding audio and video files for streaming, the complex considerations for outfitting a streaming server, when to use unicast or multicast, creation of on-the-fly server side playlists, and some of the most comprehensive compression formulas available. While there are obviously competing alternatives to the Windows Media content delivery solutions, the Windows Media Resource Kit provides a compelling argument for why the Windows Media solution may be among the most effective available. Yes, Windows Media Player 10 is out now and Windows Media Player 11 is coming soon, but the information contained in this guide will be relevant for content delivery at least until the release of Windows Vista. I hesitate to call this the bible of Windows Media content creation and management, but it comes close.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth it
This book is really a complete waste of money - it can only be used for developing quick and dirty solutions using the windows media player and so on.
5-0 out of 5 stars A whole new set of ideas from reading this book.
I thought that the Media player was used for videos, music and online content. While this is true there is so much more that can be done with the application and this book will help guide you through.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For Microsoft gurus, this is a must-have reference!
I hate the size of this Resource Kit, the biggest ResKit published by Microsoft so far. But the material more than justifies its size - every thing you need to know about the Windows 2000 platform and Active Directory is in here. I keep coming back to this one from time to time to refer to a lot of stuff that I would've otherwise overlooked.2-0 out of 5 stars Not Very Practical
Don't buy this set of books if you are interested in learning how to manage a 2000 server. It is very theoretical and devoid of practical advice. There are much better resources available if you are looking for a "how to" or reference book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A mountain of knowledge
This set of books contains everything one needs to know as a system administrator working in a Windows 2000 Domain.I've needed to refer to each book SEVERAL times to take care of one problem or another.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars True to it's purpose
I went to my local bookstore to get a functional understanding of ".NET". My previous readings had been hit and miss and provided little understanding of the new platform.
3-0 out of 5 stars .NET Framework Essentials (3rd ED)
As the title says, this book gives the essentials of the .NET framework. It is not an exhaustive treatment, rather, it touches on the main features of .NET.The book assumes that the reader is fluent in object-oriented and component-based programming.Overall, the book was fairly well written with the main features of the .NET framework being clearly explained. The book has no distractive "fluff" in it, so one can easily dive into learning about .NET.The authors give an overview of .NET, and then present a description of the common language runtime (CLR).The common programming model and working with .NET components follow.XML data and web services are clearly explained with a lot of code snippets being given. The book concludes with chapters on ASP, Windows Forms, and mobile devices. The appendices are useful, as sometime acronyms aren't defined in the main text, but are explained in the appendix.
1-0 out of 5 stars To Software Developers: Don't Bother
IMHO, OReilly tends to have the best technology books (I own many) but this book isn't one of them. This book is lightweight even as an introduction. This book is certainly fine for managers, senior architects, and business types, but if you plan to design and write software I recommend Jeff Prosise's "Programming Microsoft .NET" and Jeffrey Richter's "Applied Microsoft .NET Framework Programming", though a bit dated, both cover the .NET framework essentials and then some. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great read for all levels
This book is a fantastic resource for novices and experts alike.I relate this to a buffet of knowledge. If you are starving, there is plenty of content to fill you up.If you simply want to graze, there is enough high-level practical knowledge to appease.
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
Whether you are an AD novice or expert, this book is for you. The author's start with the basics and dig deep. Written in language that avoids boring the reader, the chapters held my attention start to finish. If you've EVER wanted to use scripts in AD, the scripting chapters will blow you away. Full of ready to use and easily modified scripts, as well as, a solid underpinning of windows scripting in general. If you administer AD, no other book comes close!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must...
I haven't read this yet. I'm still going through the XP book, but if this one is even close, this book is a must. An easy read and well laid out. The accompanying CDs are very beneficial also.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide
Any book from Tony is probably going to be good. This book is no exception. It is very well written and organized. It covers all aspects of Windows Server 2003 security. It is not quite comprehensive as you'll need the earlier 2003 Server books (or know those topics well enough) to fully cover the test. It includes good chapter summaries and practice labs. This book will also be useful to you as a reference after you have passed the exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best study guide I've read yet
This book is an excellent resource and preparation for the 70-299 exam. I've read through a lot of exam books over the years and this is the one that prepared me the best. Upon finishing this book, you feel as though you really understand the material, rather than feeling that you still have holes in your understanding, as you often do with other books. This book is comprehensive, well-laid out, and has a lot of good practice questions in the book and on CD. Microsoft Training Kit CDs are often quite meaty, and this is no exception. I highly recommend this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding! Best Windows 2003 Book on the Market!!!
I've bought 4 other books on Windows 2003 to help me with our migration to Active Directory and have been disappointed with the real world experience in all of the other books. This was the first book that had tips and tricks based on real world guidance. I was amazed that the book covered Service Pack 1 being that SP1 just came out a couple months ago. Was VERY helpful as we struggled with our migration process over the past couple months, and after I bought this book last month, we were able to get a clear handle on our implementation of Windows 2003! Outstanding book, I highly recommend it!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars BORING, and constant repetition throughout
I bought this book hoping to get clear, technical know-how from its authors. These other reviewers here helped to solidify my purchase. What a huge mistake.Chapter 1 thru 6 are CONSTANT repeating of the same points, over and over.I swear, chapter 2 is like chapter 1, as are the next few chapters. How many times do I need to be told about "transitive properties between forests, and compatibility with Windows NT and 2000... "?I kid you not, many many pages are repetitive. Chapters are repetitive.Did the proof reader not compare chapters between the various authors and red-line?It's as if they did not compare amongst each other, if indeed that's how the book got compiled.
5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable resource with clear instructions
Admins for the Windows 2003 environment are faced with a daunting task:Security in an inherently insecure world. This book is an excellent resource, with instructions that are clear and easy to follow. There is a basic knowledge assumed--this is not a book for beginners--but for the professional, this book is a literally a job saver.Included is information on Group Policy Management Console, Timewarp Client, Security Configuration Wizard and essential protocols.Well worth the investment. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This must be great!
I never got around to reading it but I did get to read the handy Caram Sheet found inside the cover.I also took the time to look at some of the questions found in the book and the table of contents. The questions and the content seem to cover the exam very well.I believe this book is sufficient to pass the test.I passed with a score 850.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book with easy simultion exam questions
This book is a great way to start studying the 70-290 Exam. It is well organized and tries to cover most of the topics. The book is interesting and useful as a reference book for the real life.
3-0 out of 5 stars You'll need more than this book will provide.
This book is not enough to pass the exam, at least the exam I received. To many holes on security. My test was 1/2 security type questions and needless to say I did not pass. I did have a home test lab and did every lab at least twice. In my lab I had 98, 2k, and XP home and Xp Pro. I do have extended experience in the networking world. I did buy the XP Pro Manual as well and I am equally disappointed. I did purchaced additional manuals to pass the the tests.Exam Cram manuals WERE one of the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating !
No matter whether you begin now or have accuired higher expertese levels on Active Directory concepts and internals, this book will definitely have something to really teach you. I read it and frankly, it managed to throw light on so many topics,
5-0 out of 5 stars It's all in here...
I have an extensive library already on Active Directory. When I first got my hands on this book I wanted to test it out, see if it was worth adding to my collection. So I played a little game, I thought of things that should be in here, then looked in the book to see if they were there. This treasure hunt went on for a while consistently finding that the topics that should be in here are in here...So I switched tack,I started to read the index and see what I wouldn't expect to be in, if it was I'd be impressed...I was and am very impresses.Very soon I was hooked, this book really does explain the answers to many questions that commonly come up.There's a lot of books out there that explain Active Directory, but few that answer those nitty-gritty questions. This is one that does!Even if you've got a bookshelf full of AD books, check this out, it's a must... Well done Sakari and Mita..

5-0 out of 5 stars Very detailed technical guide
While the authors note in the preface that this book is suitable for the complete novice, I would disagree. It is a much better match for someone with some knowledge of Active Directory who wants to take their knowledge to the next level and become a true Active Directory wizard. For those with some knowledge who wants to really get down to the inner workings of Active Directory in a depth of detail and breadth of coverage unmatched by any other book this is the place to turn.

Editorial Review

Anyone who's done programming work knows that you spend half your coding time looking for other people's solutions to the problems you're facing in your project. Particularly when you're dealing with times, dates, standard calculations, and other common problems, you find yourself saying, "Someone must have solved this before." And, indeed, someone usually has. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Quality book, a keeper
I learned about this book from its sister book, Linux Kernel Primer: A Top-Down Approach for x86 and PowerPC Architecture. While the kernel book is not a good one at all, this one is a true gem. The writing is clear, lucid, and the examples are from the real world and thoroughly explained. In contrast, the kernel book gives overly broad and general introduction to a subject and then dives into the source code with disconnected commenting; there is such a big gap between the intro and the source code that it's not readable at all.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great real world examples
Linux Programming by Example: The Fundamentals is a great book that covers three main concepts in Linux programming: files, processes and debugging. In each part the author explains and gives several examples of functions, systems calls and APIs that will help the Linux programmer. He also includes several real world examples of how these concepts are implemented. Here are the some things that I found interesting:
5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable resource
This is an exceptionally fine book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable Resource For Any Windows Admin
About a year ago I was investigating a system to try and determine if it was attacked, as well as when and how if it had been. I wrote for help to a list that I am on and Harlan Carvey responded with detailed and useful information that helped me out.
5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent and Informative Book
I am a nuts and bolts kind of guy and this book suits me to a tee. Harlan covers the topics thoroughly and has added to my knowledge of forensic methodology and shown me new techniques to discover information the many recent versions of the Windows operating system. He has done his homework, mixed it up with lots of coding examples, and even added some dream weaving to illustrate his points.
5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable Reference for Todays Windows Admins
I would strongly recommend this book to anyone that is looking at Windows incident response or Windows monitoring. This is the first computer book that I have read cover to cover in well over 5 years and I have bought a lot of computer books. From the beginning until the end you are bombarded with information that is useful and relevant to today's Windows management. Not only are you told about different tools but are shown how they are used and what benefit they have, not only in incident response but also in daily monitoring.

3-0 out of 5 stars A reluctant 3 stars (2 1/2 perhaps more appropriate)
I used the book as a reference for MCSE.But, now that I'm really going through and reading it more thoroughly I'm surprised that it was rated 5 stars at the time I bought and still is.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
If you are going to do anything w/ MSFT security in XP, 2000 or NT, you must use this book, there is a lot of helpful info in it.

3-0 out of 5 stars An overly wordy reference with lots of hidden gems
I've read nearly a dozen security related books now, including a lot from the Hacking Exposed team. This doesn't compare. There's no flare, there's no personality, it's a reference text.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lacking
The book spends an excessive amount of pages talking about things OTHER than Citrix. Project Management, Network Management etc. The core problem with the book is that it simply does not contain details on getting up and running. It spends huge amounts of space talking about coneptional things like "Server Based Computing" but does not go through the technical details of setting it up.
1-0 out of 5 stars a little long winded
I have started reading the book and find it to long winded. If I want to read PMBOK I would read it, if the book is about Citrix please get to the point.
4-0 out of 5 stars MetaFrame Access Suite for Windows Server 2003
Finally a book that not only addresses the technical issues a Citrix administrator needs, but also the often times forgotten business issues that justify why any technology should be implemented. These guys do a great job addressing the paradigm change a system administrator must understand in order to correctly design, implement, administer and troubleshoot a MetaFrame environment. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars For Administrators of Windows XP Professional or Windows 2003 Server Software
I purchased this book to help me create a more secure limited user environment for Windows XP Home which would also work with legacy software. After purchase I found out that the author assumes the user is administering either Windows XP Professional or Windows 2003 Server software for large groups of users. The author details how to make mass registry changes using the Group Policy Editor which is not available in Windows XP Home. This book is probably the best resource available for its intended readers. While it was not intended for use with Windows XP Home, I've gained enough knowledge from the book to be able to successfully find on the internet the writings of other authors who have already worked out the registry hacks of XP Home needed to accomplish for its administrators one user at a time the same result as that obtained for those who administer large groups of users. ...
