5-0 out of 5 stars extensive AD reference, great guides
The reference information in this library is very useful and complete, but I was pleasantly surprised to see how much hands-on development information is provided as well. Since Microsoft's Active Directory is relatively new,I needed the combination of guides + reference to get up to speed with ADprogramming/scripting. This library provided both. The schema book, withits chapters on extending the schema and complete class/attribute listing, rounded out this reference as a must-have for people programming orscripting Active Directory. The AD glossary is a plus, too. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A BREATH OF FRESH AIR !!!!!
Obviously the author is a computer scientist who understands what engineers and programmers need to know. This is the internals document you won't find on MSDN. Definitely a MUST READ for anyone who is truly serious about designing systems or applications around ANY Microsoft Windows technology. My design is a CE appliance but this is still an essential read. No hype. No "around the edges" focus on technologies designed to hide implementation details. This book gets right to the heart of the kernal. The light bulbs have been going off since I picked it up. 3-0 out of 5 stars Not for learning Win API
The title of this book suggested to me that it was the book I needed if I wanted to learn the Windows API.Unfortunetly after struggling through it I've reallized it's targeted to an audience who already has knowledge of programming in the Windows API.I think a better title would have been something like "Tips, techniques, and common shortfalls for the Microsoft Windows Application Programmer."A waste of money on my part since I would need to buy his earlier book, and then by the time I would have mastered the basics that would allow me to move on to this book C# .NET will be wellestablished and although maybe not obsolete, the old Win API will not be needed. So this one is going on my shelf and I doubt I will ever make much use of it.The only reason I don't give it a lower rating is because it does have interesting notable information on Unicode even for me, and were I of the experienced, intended audience, then lots of the other contained information would be very interesting and beneficial from what I can tell.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Windows
When you want to know how windows works, there are 3 people (outside of Microsoft) to go to: Jeffery Richer, Matt Pietrek and John Robbins. This book deserves a spot on every serious developer's shelf. It covers a lot of under the hood topics that are difficult to find elsewhere.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on Windows GDI
This the most extensive, best explained Windows GDI book ever read by me! I hereby highly recommend this book to everyone who is doing GDI intensive work.1-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Coverage, Poorly Written
After spending several weeks going over the contents of this book, I do not recommend it to the beginning or intermediate readers.Feng Yuan insight into the Visual C++ environment is excellent; however, he does a very poor job with organizing and explaining the topic to the average reader.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have
I've been working on Linux kernel driver for sometime and recently started porting my driver to Windows platform, which is totally new to me. I started by going through DDK online manual for over a month, during which I spent a ton of energy trying to find the Windows counterparts of the functions I'm using in Linux driver. Then I came across this book, which is saving me a lot.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for my needs given my experience.
Oney's book provided the right overview and explanations I needed to get up to speed. I didn't expect a man to pop out of his book and do the work for me. Most any serious development is never done by the purchase of a book alone. 3-0 out of 5 stars Be careful

An ever-growing number of applications are being developed for the Windows server platform. As more companies come to rely on this burgeoning code base, software developers require the skills to closely integrate with Windows. Administrators resent applications with obvious bugs, but they will also reject code that is difficult to administer, performs poorly, or dominates system resources. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of the few real books about Win32
This book tells how to use existing Win32 API facilities to write solid and efficient server side apps. Most Win32 API books just describe GUI API part like Petzold's books do. This book takes you to the point - how to use EventLogging, Threads, IO completion port, security, Sockets, Overlapped IO, Synchronization, etc and why they work this way.It tells you even more - where most apps losing performance, standard techniques for synchronization, how to monitor system health. It offers little help for VB and MFC programmers at the same time if your apps should run for weeks and serve thousands requests an hour this is your survival guide.5-0 out of 5 stars I was satisfied.
The book Programming Server-Side Applications for Microsoft Windows 2000, which I get looks quite new. Probably nobody read it before. Buying this book was a good deal for me. .... Thank you.

4-0 out of 5 stars The best book for server side development
I'm doing server-side programming for years and I can state - a few books can match this one.It covers almost all core Win32 API that involved in server side development in great details. It is easy enough to read, but required basic CS knowledge. It was specially written for Win 32 API unlike many other books that been adopted from Win16.It covers fundamentals - processes, threads, different types IO, event logging, resource management, synchronization security and etc. This is the stuff that gives C++ advantage over VB on serve-side.Without it apps should be written in VB to run under COM+.It even touches Win64 API, but since I never use it I cannot judge it.It does not cover GUI development.I wish more information about COM and socket programming. If you involved in server-side development for high performance apps this book is the best source so far. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good tutorial on VBScript and WSH
As other reviewers have noted, this book almost exclusively focuses on using WSH with VBScript rather than a more general tour of WSH and other scripting languages (as perhaps implied by the title). Fortunately, this is exactly what I was looking for and, as a newcomer to VB, I found the book provided a good, thorough tutorial on VBScript with plenty of inline examples on the various language features and built-in WSH and VBScript objects.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great for newbies

Great book for the Network Administrator.Layed out like the "for dummies" series, but doesn't say "For Dummies" so you don't have to be embarrassed to have it on your bookshelf at work.It is very simple and easy to read. Each appendix is a Windows 2000 roll-out scenario complete with screen shots of each wizard box.I like this book and I'm sure I'll be referring to it often.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just about everything I wanted to know
This book pretty much covers everything I needed to know about Win32 system programming. It has very good coverage of topics like threading, file handling, Memory Management, Interprocess communication, network programming, and asynchronous I/O with completion ports. Ever wonder how to share memory or access really, really huge files? Want to learn how to build more scalable servers? This book covers all that and more. I recently took a new job that uses all of this stuff and I was relieved to find a book that covered it all so well.
4-0 out of 5 stars Please note that there is a third edition of this book!
The rating I give here is just based on a skim of the book. However, after visiting the author's website, I very quickly realized that there is a more recent (2004) third edition of the text. Unless you specifically want a more historical perspective, I would recommend that you get the third edition.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not enough for the price
I thought the book was well written and would be marginally useful as a basic reference book but I expected more content such at the WIN32 API and more than just a preview of WIN64 and a summary discussion of COM/DCOM and other more complex subjects.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear, concise, and very useful
The Syntax Overview at the beginning of the book is worth the price alone.Nathan outlines the basic parts of regular expressions and gives you a clear idea of what they are without getting pedantic. This overview isn't even included in the main chapters but rather as an introductory supplement perhaps underestimating its usefulness.Do yourself a favor especially if you are new to regular expressions and read this section first.
3-0 out of 5 stars Too much source code, not enough regular expressions
When I saw the title of this book, I was excited at the prospect of a book filled with detailed regular expression examples.Unfortunately, it didn't pan out that way.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good... but...
This is a good book for system administrators who utilize WMI on a daily basis to help automate tasks. The author does a decent job of explaining how to incorporate WMI into VBScript to retrieve information from the WMI about the local computer to aid in tasks such as hardware management, application management and other inventory/asset tasks that a sysadmin would be faced with on a daily basis.5-0 out of 5 stars It's a great WMI book for VBscripting admins
The authors do a good job of showing lots of WMI VBscript code examples, and they weave it together with good explanatory prose.Using this book, along with the WMI SDK docs and samples from Microsoft gave me enough info to do some usefull stuff with WMI.

2-0 out of 5 stars full of errors
get Oney's book instead - it's more readable and the examples actually work...

2-0 out of 5 stars Not so usefull
I've found this book chaotic, and not very informative. It doesn't cover many topics like DMA and Direct I/O mode. I think this book can be more useful after reading any book covering NT drivers in details.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great entry point for beginners.
I needed to write a Windows device driver to do parallel port I/O on NT machines and handle hardware interrupts. The DDK is incomprehensible to novices. The Viscarola / Mason book is a great reference, but is not a good how-to. Oney has lots of important information on lots of important topics, but you can quickly get lost in tons of details that don't apply to the task at hand. Chris Cant gets it right in his book. Hispedagogical strategy is to actually create a very small device driver, and then study it as you layer on the complexity, and not hit you with it all at once. It exactly addressed my primary needs. Its drawback is that it is not very detailed, nor is it a good advanced reference, so the ideal solution is to get all three books, and use them each for their own strength. But start with Chris Cant's. (He also includes a couple of very useful utilities, one of which is a marvelous debugging tool.) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars W O W !!!
Need I say more? If so... This book is about 3 to 4 inches thick (~1200 pages) and covers just about anything you want to know about windows graphics from creating a bitmap and putting a dot on the screen to morphing and distorting images. When you get done with this book you could easily write your own Photo Editor. Full of code examples and explanations. Very well written. I own 30+ programming books and this (as well as the other Coriolis Black Books) is one of my favorites. I would say perfect for a Newbie all the way up to a Power User. I have been looking for a book like this since Windows 95 came out. Bottom Line: BUY THIS BOOK!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Hmmm...why no metafile coverage?
Frankly amazing to me that in a Win graphics book of this size and, in other respects, scope and excellence, that neither"metafile" nor "enhanced metafile" is in the index, nor is there anywhere else a mention that I could find. Consistent with this, all of the metafile-related GDI functions are missing as well---hardly a "comprehensive treatment of the Windows GDI" as stated in the Introduction. It seems to me that this rather large omission deserves at least a tiny explanation or justification somewhere, but there isn't one...instead it appears we are pretending that metafiles are not part of the Win2K GDI. A bit surreal!5-0 out of 5 stars An essential book for every serious graphics developer
This is a mammoth undertaking that was necessary in today's market of Windows-dominated graphics applications. This book may be too much for a beginner. However, for the serious graphics developer, this is a must-have reference and handbook all-in-one. Before seeing this book, my favourite hard-core computer graphics book was "Computer Graphics" by James D. Foley and Andries van Dam. This "black book" does an better job when it comes to the Microsoft Windows-specific approach of doing things. From page one it jumps into a direct explanation of topics. It cuts through the chase when it comes to developing high-performance applications. The examples are in C++ however as a Delphi developer, I used it effectivelyin a major project that involved both video capturing and image processing in the medical software industry. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This book has it all. The most comprehensive overview of Windows you will find anywhere

4-0 out of 5 stars Is a good book, but not very good
I have interest in mechanism of microsoft windows 2000/NT, since windows isn't a free OS, I have to read books instead of source code. The book is a famous one focused on system mechanism of win2k,I read it, sure, I got much knowledge from it,but I find it's a little mussy, and not very clear, it's also not detailed enough to understand microsoft win2k/NT.4-0 out of 5 stars clear and interesting, but some things are left out
This book is interesting for people who want to learn about what goes on under the hood of Windows 2000. The authors' style is clear and easy to understand and there is a good wealth of precious, in depth information.Read more

This is an expert guide with excellent examples.I would have5-0 out of 5 stars Microsoft Windows 2000 Active Directory Programming
As a newcommer to ADSI by being "thrown into the arena" by the departure of another programmer, I found this book to be an excellent starting point to not only clear up problems I was having with my "inherited" programs, but also by seeing the power of AD and how to work with it programmatically, I was given ideas for additional features in existing programs and also for a couple of new tools to make life for our help desk people a bit easier. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Dont ever buy this book
This book is all about how to set up the debugger and get some basic information on the error.
1-0 out of 5 stars Outdated, Obsolete, Full of Typographical Errors
Don't even bother borrowing this book from the library. It is a waste of shelf space. My first clue should have been the book's website no longer exists.
1-0 out of 5 stars Total disappointment

1-0 out of 5 stars The worst windows 2000 book I've read to date
This book has been very poorly edited with numerous typos in the text and the illustrations which make it confusing and frustrating to read - I would hesitate to buy another book from this publisher again. Buy something else instead - this isn't worth the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good way to learn AD
I read Curt Simmons'Creating Active Directory Infrastructures book andbought this one as well. This book is very easy to read and covers AD in avisual way. The book crawls all over the AD tools and shows you how to andwhy to configure this or that. It also has info about design and planningas well as DNS, DHCP, and other networking services. It's kind of adifferent way to learn a high level topic, but I liked it, and it will be agreat reference book. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money!!!
This is by far the most disorganized book I've ever seen! Pg. 298 talks about burning in a new server before setting up the Active Directory, and for this it says, "you can use Backup/restore as discussed in Chapter 5." So I re-read Chapter 5, and there is NOTHING on this Bup/restore method for burning in the server. Also, on pg. 298 it talks about the procedure described in appendix B. Well guess what... There is no appendix B!!! There is only a single appendix that explains the contents of the CD, and nothing else!!! I wish I had seen a review like this one before wasting my time and money on this book!!!
