2-0 out of 5 stars Lots of fluff, not much meat
The first half of the this book (200 pages) explains what the registry is and how to change the settings. The next 150 pages give some detail, but misses some very important registery keys.No where in this book does it explain how to turn off autoplay on the CD-ROM.

5-0 out of 5 stars Microsoft Windows XP Registry Guide
The Registry guide is chock full of tweaks for fine tuning the registry. If you are advanced in computers this should be the book for you. I advise you though to backup anything you do with your registry because you can really mess things up.The book points this out and gives you a better understanding of the inner workings of your computer's registry.I do think some of the concepts could have been more elaborated on but it is clearer than some books I've encountered.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not For Beginners, Mandatory for Systems Administers
Not for the beginner or the faint of heart. The registry is that thing down at the bottom of the operating system that controls what the Windows XP operating system does.

4-0 out of 5 stars For Administrators of Windows XP Professional or Windows 2003 Server Software
I purchased this book to help me create a more secure limited user environment for Windows XP Home which would also work with legacy software. After purchase I found out that the author assumes the user is administering either Windows XP Professional or Windows 2003 Server software for large groups of users. The author details how to make mass registry changes using the Group Policy Editor which is not available in Windows XP Home. This book is probably the best resource available for its intended readers. While it was not intended for use with Windows XP Home, I've gained enough knowledge from the book to be able to successfully find on the internet the writings of other authors who have already worked out the registry hacks of XP Home needed to accomplish for its administrators one user at a time the same result as that obtained for those who administer large groups of users. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars It's... OK
This book is an alright registry book.Unfortunatly it doesn't really get into actually editing registry entrys until late in the book. This book might be OK for users new to messing with the registry but if you have been doing it for a while and want to more advanced stuff with the registry I'd look elsewhere.I will say though, it has a trick for showing your computer on a network as multiple computers, that's kinda cool. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars several inconsistancies
I too, like a previous reviewer, noticed several errors in the self testing section of this book. Luckily I knew the correct answers and could spot them.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Worth the Money
The layout of the book may be appealing, and the graphics & charts too, but the contents are the reason I bought this book.I found many inconsistancies in the review question section where the answer key completely contradicts the text of the book.I also came across similar mistakes on the diskette.I am disappointed in the WB Saunders Company that they can publish a book of such importance which is unreliable and therefore useless.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great place to start to learn to hack the Registry
I'd like to add my voice to the cumulative opinion that this is an excellent book for those who are first learning to delve into the registry. Mr. Born's explanations are clear, and he always gives several different ways to do everything. He shows the tradeoffs involved in doing something one way vs. another. I found the chapters on the Registry in Windows 9x Resource Kit, Expert Guide to Windows 9x, Mastering Windows 9x and Windows 9x Unleashed just did not teach me eonugh to know what I was looking at. Inside the Windows 9x Registry has done that. It even covers elementary .inf file programming. Helpful resources in appendices and tables explain cryptic commands; even the Shell32.dll icons are explained. One limit on my opinion: I have not read other books on the Registry, so I can't compare this book to those.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent guide to win98 registry
It is an excellent book with a lot of screenshots, which is a real plus especially if you're unsure of what you're doing. The step-by-step explanations are sure easy to understand. The author tried to unfold the mystery of win98 registry to casual users and he did it in this book. It'sdefinitely a guide to know your win98 better than ever.3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing...
This book is a good book, the problem is, is thatis aimed at non-technical people. As a programmer, I was expecting a much more thorough review of the registry, in particular, the hardware section. Thebook does not touch on the Registry API functions enough, and assumesreaders will make registry operations with windows (control panel etc..). For hardcore readers, Windows SDK and DDK provide much more thorough(albeit difficult) answers. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as expected...
I purchase this book as a guide to the Windows XP Registry. There is probably more useful information about the registry than any other book out there. That said, the book suffers from poor organization and many inane jokes.TheRegistry information is comprehensive, maybe overly so as there is no emphasis on what are important tweaks and changes to the Registry as opposed to insignificant details. Other sections point out many different ways to accomplish a task, but no suggestions as to which technique is the best. this book is best as an encyclopedia rather than a guide to using the Registry. Also Hipson recommends installing a second copy of XP to a different directory rather than a different partition. Bad idea! Try Honeycutt instead.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great reference for Registry details
The Registry is probably one of the most misunderstood, praised, and cursed portions of the Windows operating system today. This book on the Windows 2000 Registry covers areas such as optimization, fixing problems and disaster recovery in addition to the traditional information on Keys, Entries and Data Types. You will find that Hipson tends to take the "official" Microsoft position on many items. However, there are many third party alternatives out there to help resolve problems. For example, as consultants our company often has to work on a system that we did not set up.So, since security is often messed up, the registry has problems, etc. we find ourselves in the position of having to boot the system in DOS and access the NTFS drive to repair a problem (and, No, I am not going to explain here how to reset the Administrator password this way).Hipson indicates that it can't be done (the official Microsoft position). However, there are many third party utilities out there in the real world that make this a no-brainer to do.2-0 out of 5 stars A useful but poorly written brain dump
Hipson obviously has spent a lot of time fiddling with Windows and acquiring useful tidbits about how it works. But Hipson does a very poor job of communicating his knowledge. He seems to have dictated the book into a tape recorder, and not bothered to go back and put related facts together. Thus an explantation of the overall organization of the registry starts out with a muddled analogy with disk drives, pauses to give a list of handy hive name acronyms (which he never actually uses!), gets back on track long enough to list (but not define) registry data types, meanders off into a lengthy description of the Windows boot process, returns to the organization issue long enough to deliver a rant on inconsistent usage in other people's documentation.... You get the idea.Read more

Editorial Review

The great thing about the Windows 98 Registry is that it's a central location for settings and preferences information about the operating system and the programs that exist within it. The problem with the Registry is that the keys you need to locate and the values you need to edit often rank near the bottom of the intelligibility scale. This slender book explains many of the mysteries of the Windows 98 Registry, that repository of settings, preferences, relationships, and other key system data. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Problem Solver
These "Little Black Books" are published by the same people as the Exam Cram books and they are very useful.I've got this one along with the Reducing TCO book. Both have come in handy for me.I recently got this Registry book out to figure out an authentication problem we are having on our network.I didn't find anything to fix our problem, but I ended up reading the Sys Admin and TCP/IP section and found a lot of good useful info in there. These books are set up for ease of use.The chapters are tabbed in black so you can find what you are looking for real fast. The Index is very comprehensive and it is easy to look stuff up.It has a quick reference pull-out sheet like the Exam Cram books have. The second edition has some updated information and an expanded index. We should probably be seeing a third edition soon.A third edition or a new one for Windows 2003.This is a useful tool for 2k Sys Admin types and OS power users.

4-0 out of 5 stars SECOND BEST REFERENCE BOOK ON REGISTRY
This book has the same strengths and weaknesses of all reference books on Windows 98. Each provides useful knowledge but none are able to cover every major procedure, issue, or problem in Windows 98. Perhaps, that is the underlining problem with Windows; too many topics to cover in one book. 5-0 out of 5 stars You won't find a better registry book than this.
This book covers the Windows Registry in superb detail. I recommend it to anyone desiring to understand how Windows uses the Registry. It will teach you how you can use the Registry to tweak the Windows user interface.Editing the Registry is safe as long as you follow the safety guidelinesset forth in the early chapters of this book. Don't buy the Dummies book(or any other Dummies book for that matter) unless you are a dummy. Thetypical power user needs something more technical. This is the book forhim. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but not enough focus on practicality.
This book is excellent for understanding the "theory" of the Win 98 registry, but I have not found it very useful for guidance in the practical aspects of actually tweaking registry settings. It usuallycontains enough information about a particular registry section to know ifit is not worth editing, but it often does not give enough coverage toimportant keys. It would definitely benefit a lot from input by a personwho commonly solves problems using the registry. That said, I havesometimes found it helpful when trying to find which key contains a givenpiece of info that I am interested in tweaking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for mysified Mac users
As someone with a background in the comparatively 'easier' (and more stable) Mac world, I found this book, more than any other Windows 98 guidebooks, to be the most useful in terms of explaining why my Wintelproduct was failing. The book is exceptionally well-designed.Not only isthe materially organized in a useful fashion, the page-layout makes thingseasy to read. The author's writing style is crisp and engaging, and thatwhich he is trying to teach is genuinely useful.Indeed, _Using theWindows 98 Registry_ is so straightforward in its approach, I felt like Iwas reading a tech manual for a Macintosh product.I would second anotherreviewers' comments, though, that future editions could benefit from theinclusion of case studies.

5-0 out of 5 stars A serious book about Win98 Registry
I purchased the book to understand how Windows 98 registry really works. I had sometimes to correct corrupt registry entries arising from my heavy user actions and this may be very scary.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best so far
As a professional dealing everyday with real world PC problems, like people locking themselves out of their own computers or tinkering with Windows till nothing really works, this book has really helped me.Glenn knows his stuff and on top he offers tips that you don't find anywhere else.I was impressed by the "reader-friendly" style of the book in general, something that you appreciate when you have to read too many times books that are simply boring.I am looking out for the next book he writes!

5-0 out of 5 stars Right On Topic
This book is an absolute must-have for anyone embarking into an IT career. Definitely for beginners, the text covers everything you could possibly want to know about that beast called the REGISTRY. However, seasoned pros will also find some useful tidbits of knowledge tucked away in here too. The author stresses the importance of when and where to backup the registry files and he outlines several methods for accomplishing the task. Glenn Weadock guides us through the tasks of cleaning and compressing the registry to improve overall system performance. He does a fine job detailing the structure of the registry too, a read that will benefit anyone going after their MCSE. When possible, third party utilities for manipulating the registry are compared to those resident in the Windows OS; the pros and cons of each are covered in just enough detail. Beginners will enjoy this book because it's easy to read. Pros will like it because of it's organization. Easy to read and easy to use, pick this one up if you need a solid introduction to the Windows Registry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for beginners and the advanced
Frankly, with my background and credentials I was embarrassed when I bought this (a "Dummies") book. 3-0 out of 5 stars the book is ok, but why?
This book has no information that can't be found with either a quick search on MSDN or Google, books like that just make me upset.

5-0 out of 5 stars 5 Stars For Kathy Ivens
Many IT books either address the absolute beginner or the advanced developer and completely ignore the implementer. No so with this book. Kathy Ivens wrote it for those who support networks and end users. Her writing style is straightforward and easy to comprehend. While containing no "fluff", she gives the reader plenty of useful information. She discusses how to backup and restore the registry, various registry tools, and countless tips for tweaking the registy. I used one of those tips the very day I received this book. I had just upgraded a user's operating system from Windows 95 to Windows 2000 Professional and she asked me if there was a way for the NumLock key to stay on when she was logging in. Sure enough, one of the tips in this book discusses that very thing. It took me a few seconds tomodify the registry and gain a happy user! This book is a must have and I wish there were many more like it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible Reference!
