3-0 out of 5 stars Good but needs an update
This book gave me a good understanding of the methodology of ASP.NET as well as the concepts behind it. The organization of the book is good for someone new to ASP.NET and C# as it starts simple and proceeds forward in a logical manner to more complex topics.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good stuff
I found this book to be very helpful! It is an excellent source of information for the VB6 developer making the transition to .NET.The OOP chapter was great. It's great for learning to use the IDE and other related features. In reference to the last review: I found that there are revisions and a feedback loop available at the website.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good info, poor proofreading
I read this book cover to cover, and worked through virtually all the examples. There's a lot of good information here, but proofreading is poor, and more information is needed to get some of the more complex sample code (provided at the author's web site) operational on one's local machine. That's rather frustrating after making a large investment in studying the text.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars complexity clarified
An unusual volume where the most complex issues are presented with unusual clarity. The subject requres work but the material for understanding is there.

1-0 out of 5 stars Got some money to through out the window?
Absolutely the worst book I've purchased. If it weren't for my MCDBA exam, I'd burn this one in a hurry.I don't know what she was trying to do, maybe teach the exam, but you would be well advised that a firm background in VB.net is needed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Take the reviews advice
I bought this book despite it's bad reviews and I must say that I am sorry I did. This book is very poorly written. I got only to chapter 3 and the examples have led me to debug to get them to work. Example, chapter 3 asks you to connect to an Access database (OleDB) with a SQL Object! No, no. It also in the same chapter references a view in the PROVIDED Access database off the disk named OrderTotals thats not even there!

3-0 out of 5 stars could be better
The main problem I have is with the lack of editting. His choice of words can really leave you confused sometimes.I keep having to cross out unneeded words and correct his grammar so that the puzzle will be solved if I need to come back and read the same part later.
4-0 out of 5 stars Still a bit rough, but useful
I've been a programmer for longer than most programmers have been alive, but I'm new to SQL Server and Visual Basic. This book looked like it would be the perfect introduction to both, but it seems to have been rushed to market. It appears that chapters 11 and 12 were once a single chapter, and were split without a lot of subsequent editing in either the book or the sample code on the website. On the second page of Chapter 12, for example, it says "The samples to this point in the chapter...", but there haven't been any samples to this point in the chapter. This is somewhat understandable in a printed book, but as I write this (5/13/2006) the book has been out for almost 5 months, and the sample code on the website still has all the code piled together in a folder called "Sample code for chapters 11 and 12".This makes it harder than it needs to be to find the code the author is referring to when one wants to get some context for the snippets of code in the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Review from a beginner's point of view
I have just a little experience in access 2000 so the thought of moving to SQL databases was scary. Rick Dobson did a great job of taking the fear out of SQL with his book Beginning SQL Server 2005 Express. He takes you step by step through the process of working with SQL Server 2005 Express. The lessons are paced for the beginners and the code examples work, that in it self is something new. He starts you at the beginners level and then brings you to some of the advanced topics.

3-0 out of 5 stars good service but need better packaging
the book was received in a good, timely manner at a cheap price
5-0 out of 5 stars A good investment
Concise, precise and with hands-on examples of entire projects. This book is scattered with coloured screenshots to illustrate their instructions so you never have to guess what the authors mean. Targetted at the absolute beginner (in programming) but as it is a breeze to read, the more advanced reader is sure to pick up a few VB gems on his stroll through it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book to start VB6.0
I was lucky to stumble across this book in Amazon.com and didn't really know what I was getting. Once reading through the first chapters and trying some of the exercises I realize this is great. The book teaches you the correct way to program in simple descriptive language. I have now leant what I need to start my own small projects and have ordered the Advanced VB6 from the same authors, looking forward to getting it. The book also comes with the learning VB6.0 CD which gets you started. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for 2003-->2005 Upgrade
This book nicely captures a balance between ultra-condensed "Nutshell" books and the mighty 1,000 page+ tomes. It is aimed at experienced VB developers switching from Visual Studio 2003/CRL 1.1 to Visual Studio 2005/CLR 2.0. It has nice concise examples with great explanations.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great value
The VB 2005 Developer's Notebook is just chock-full of very useful and immediately usable information, much of which is not readily available elsewhere. For example, I recently made use of the section on adding images and controls to the datagridview. There's also a very useful intro to using the new factory model to write database-agnostic code.
5-0 out of 5 stars A great start for someone moving up to VB 2005
This is an excellent book for people moving from VB 2003 to VB 2005. It just gives an overview of what has changed, pointing out the issues and limitations in 2003 and the improvements to these issues in 2005. It presumes you are already familiar with VB 2003, so this is not a primer. It's a quick read, and had me constantly saying "Thank goodness - they've done something about that". All the examples are straightforward. Writing style is very straightforward. Every topic has where to go for further help. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly, Poorly Written
This book was a complete disaster in comparison to other books I've used from Thomsons Course Technology. The examples are extremely thin and you will have to use the internet as a resource because much of the tags and code the book leaves out and you have to fend for yourself.I had to buy this book for a class I am taking. Most of it is totally outdated and I can'tbelieve my school is still using it for the Internet Programming class. What a waste of my money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good educational book for learners
Very good educational book for learners. My only complain it does not include sample code CD-ROM; it would most likely catch all the mispelling. But for teaching material its an excellent book to have.

1-0 out of 5 stars Does not rate a STAR
Very bad examples in this book. Spelling errors, coding errors, you will need to buy other books to figure out what she is trying to teach. She should have read her book before printing it. This book should never have been printed in the first place. Not a good book at all. She provided only part of codes and you have to figure it out yourself. Why do we need her botch attempt at being an author or teacher. SAVE YOUR MONEY on this one. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars This book is now obsolete.
Well, I bought this bought and quickly discovered that I was wasting my time and money.Microsoft has now introduced Visual Basic 2005 Express. You can download it free from Microsoft, along with some good documentation on learning.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not for (any kind of) beginner
As several reviewers have pointed out, this is NOT a book for beginners to programming. It is NOT a book for beginners to Visual Basic programming. It is a book for Visual Basic programmers who want to learn about .NET programming. The book is not a bad introduction for programmers who want to learn Visual Basic .NET. The author should not have allowed the book to be published in this series. The title is false and misleading. I won't buy another book in the series nor another book by Jonathan Harbour.

1-0 out of 5 stars microsoft visual basic.net programming for the absolute beginner
This book was terrible.I would use it better to start a camp fire or to burn the trash.

This book came in perfect condition with the cd in the back. Im seriously loving it.

3-0 out of 5 stars object oriented programming
One of biggest complaints I have about asp.net is they do not start with the basics of object oriented programming. This book reviews classes, variables, arrays and ado.net sql programming. THIS BOOK STARTS WITH THIS, however please you Shouldhave some background in object oriented programming before starting this book.!! This book provides a nice reference. Muti-architectural asp.net has many facets classes, controls,sql-ado.net etc. I have yet to see a perfect(ASP.Net book(I did search in columbia md and white flint mall) so this book is just one piece of a large piece of the asp.net puzzle. The other books should be in sql-ado.net, hashes, parse, controls, data grids etc

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Intermediate Book for VB.NET
This book is well written, thorough, and concise.I want to emphasize that this book is very concise; this is the reason that I loved it so much. This book minimizes redunancy and fillers. As a result, I was able to acquire approx. 2-3 times the information per page as compared to a typical programming book.If you have a moderate understanding of programming (or are at least a novice with a talent for this type of thing), then this book will give you a firm grasp on the fundamentals of VB.NET.In addition, you'll learn enough about various .NET topics to know whether more detailed studies of those topics would benefit your goals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Right on top
This is the best overall book about a proramming language that I have ever owned. From the Turbo Pascal v2 to all of the .net programming languages, this one takes the cake. Plainly written, and full of excellent examples, this is one that will stay on my desk for a long time.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad for the money
Visual Basic is a huge subject, and most books that cover it carry a price tag of $40+. This book has chapters from other books and so, as a reprint, it was produced a lot more cheaply. It is not a book for beginners, but it is a decent reference. It has a lot of examples -- and this is the best way to go about using a programming language, anyway.

5-0 out of 5 stars An instructors point of view
I am a technical instructor that teaches programming to students who have had no previous experience.I utilize many of the "absolute beginners" books to get them familiar with the landscape before dragging them into deeper "technical" books.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Balls of VB Fire For New Programmers!
I have been doing computer systems and software for forty years and was looking for a training book for two new staff engineers who have engineering degrees but little programming experience. I ordered Andrew Parsons "Starter Kit" for this purpose and then ordered this book by Jerry Lee Ford as well. For reasons described below, I have selected this book, the Jerry Lee Ford book, to use for newbie training while reserving the Parsons book for those with prior programming experience.
5-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Informative Writing Style
This book is the best tutorial format book I've seen on programming VB. It starts with just a handfull of simple steps and behold, there's a real, live, working application. To be sure, it doesn't do much, but at least you have something working.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful VB 2005 Learning Tool
'Visual Basic 2005 Express: Now Playing' is a wonderful starter book for anyone that is new to Visual Basic and wants to quickly get their feet wet and start rapidly developing applications which can do more than you might have ever expected!Written in a nice, easy to follow style by Wallace Wang, this text has the typical No Starch design which is not only easy on the eyes but the brain as well.Logically separated out into 30 chapters (this might sound like a lot but I assure you it's not overpowering), this book assumes that you have little to no programming experience, and it won't have you running in the other direction like some other 1,000 page books might, covered front to back in terms and words that are truly overkill.
5-0 out of 5 stars Even though it's on VB, it's still great
Ok, perhaps my title was a bit flippant but this is a really killer book. It's more of a mid level or beginners book but even seasoned developers will find it a good refresher and there's a lot of good stuff in it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Starter Book
If you are a complete newcomer to programming, you should seriously consider getting a copy of this book.It never loses sight of the fact that beginners don't always "get it" first time, every time and it uses non-technical explanations and good learning reinforcement techniques to show you the skills in the easiest, least complicated way possible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Excellent text for engineers seeking to interface their projects with the PC. I waited for a long time for a text like this to emerge. It contains all the practical stuff you won't see in generic computer science texts. Highly reccommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful addition to your reference library...
I am surprised at some of the negative reviews of this book. This book contains some very useful material especially the TCP/IP and Parser Class topics. The only reason that I didn't give it five stars is because of the space wasted on a review of the Visual Basic Language. I used some of the ideas in this book in a VB Human Machine Interface (HMI) application that I developed. The source code is available at ....

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice book on Automation with Visual Basic
If you want to study Visual Basic with this book, it may not be a right choice. However, if you want to do automation with VB, this is a right book. Several topics in this book are very useful to me. 1)Communication methods with VB. One of the foundamental thing in automatic control of devices/instrument is to establish the communication between computer and devices/instrument. Several useful methods are covered. They are Dynamic Data Exchange(DDE), RS232(computer serial communication), and TCP/IP. This book will not enable you to understand in deep details what's really going on in RS232 or TCP/IP communications, but this book will definitely enable you to implement these methods. Actually, in most cases if not all, we do not need to know what's really going on in RS232 or TCP/IP communications at all. 2)Device control and data handling. This part covers how to handle the data transferred in communication--parsing, and control multiple devices/instrument. 3)Graphic interfaces, which will enable developers to build a friendly interface between the control system and end users. Please do not overlook this, it is most probably that the users' commends on your system depend a lot on this interface, because this is what they can see and handle with.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars I do not like this book
I am giving the book one star because of the number of exercises in it and no stars is not an option.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good book
I bought this book for a class at my university, im currently majoring in IT. I found this book to be very easy to read and to understand. The code Samples are very simple and the books provides a reasonable ammount of exercise to work on. One Downside to this book is that the autor explanation to some topics in tha latter chapters of the book tends to be incomplete but is a pretty good book up to chapter 8. One important thing though is that if you want to master VB.NET this is not the book for you its main purpose is just to give you a brief introduction to the language. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars GARBAGE!!!
This book is, almost, total garbage. Only reason why I bought the book is becuase my course requires it. In the book, author talks about one thing, then all of a sudden you are faced with a new concept, and 2 lines later, another concept. I was very dissapointed becuase the key terms sometimes,or never, are not clearly explained and leaves you in frustration and deep anger. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tips and Tricks with ADO.NET unrevealed
The book explains the ADO.Net concept completely, with examples and also explains the advanced features that would other wise have been difficult to be brought in practice. While designing and developming an ASP.Net application, ADO.net plays vital role.
5-0 out of 5 stars A real good one
I have read this book completely. If you are looking to develop your skills in ADO.Net or not feeling confident about your noesis you must have read this book. Once you finishedit gives a huges amount of confidence in you. It doesn't cover each and every aspect of ADO.Net but it explains the various essential concepts behind ADO.Net in a clear way by dividing it into topics and more importantly it doesn't miss anything and it is a must have book for reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Example focused book.
This is the indepth example book I have seen for using ADO.NET for getting connected to databases. The examples in the book are just great and will give you a complete view of what goes on with database applications. Starting with the fundamentals of ADO.NET, walks through the basic principals of the new object model, and what you can do with the object model.
