5-0 out of 5 stars Extreme book on Extreme Programming, two-thumbs up :)
Practical to the point book on agile software process.. Very nicely written, great examples. It covers the tools like NUnit, NAnt, CruiseControl etc + the whole extreme process -like user interactions / building user stories - building protypes - the design phase, implimentation phase and the testing and delivery, everything in a very interesting and light weight manner. So much interesting that I went through on the week end and never get lost. Authors, Greg Pearman and James Goodwill, did a great job in explaining this extremely mis-understood process. Most people that i know just take it a Unit-testing or a pair-programming thing.. thats all.. when you read this book you'll understand that there is lot more than these important issues especially the customer's needs. Great book a must have for every developer/team-lead even if you are not following this process. Cheers :) Shams ... Read more

I am sure there is a place for every type of book, but knowing this does not make me like certain types of books any more. This book is largely a cookbook type of book although that is not the way in which it is presented.

5-0 out of 5 stars Woo-hoo!
This book is awesome!I've dabbled in SMS Installer for a while, but this book forced me to get serious about it.I love the way the book progresses through the product allowing you to go from beginner to pro.The flow of the book is very logical and the organization is right on target. And, the CD full of like 500 scripts has kept my nose to the computer screen for two days!

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally -- have my copy in my hands!
I've been waiting and waiting for another print of this book.I was pleasantly surprised to find its back when I was searching through Amazon.com.Other SMS Admins I know have raved about this book for years, and I've never been able to get my hands on a copy, because its always sold out at the local stores.Glad to see that its in another printing.Digging into it the first day, I'm already using the product to distribute my own custom packages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just got my copy!
I can't believe this book is out of print already! This book stands the test of time.I just got my copy (from one of the used booksellers, sadly) and it rocks! For anyone who has not picked this book up yet, HURRY!Using this book, I have already completed two software packages I had given up on. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars How Mark Minasi's Book Helped Me Get My First SA Job
I wish there were a place where you could rate the "Author" and not just the book.I own many of Mr. Minasi's books and he never fails to meet my expectations of just how much information he can successfully impart to the reader.I stress the words "successfully impart" because this author's style is so clear and his analogies are so "on point" that he is able to make you understand concepts that other books fail to properly convey.Oh and as an extra:he throws in his quirky sense of humor, thus bringing some welcomed comic relief to those of us who read dull tech stuff all day long. This book is the first "Mark Minasi" book I ever owned and I haven't stopped buying books authored by him since.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Always a pleasure to read.
Mark always writes in such a way that he make the driest of subject interesting to read. Yes sometimes there is some stuff in each chapter. A sidetrack or extra information that's not necessary. However that is what makes him so easy to read. I often find myself reading long after the time I allotted myself to. One topic always leads my interest to another. This ease of reading greatly helped me obtain my MCSE, with earlier versions.I bought this update to NT 4.0, as it's being phased out, to get the latest and greatest for SP6. I purchase and have read threw months ago, sorry it has taken me so long to write the review. As with all of Marks books, when there is a revision (which SP6 created the need for), it's worth getting. I will be able to better support my Windows NT 4.0 servers until they're in there grave.I also recommend his Windows 2000 books, which I own a few of. The only thing I miss about Marks writing is his PC Upgrading & Maintenance book. The best thing about this author is he writes like he talks and talks like he writes. If you get the chance to hear him speak, you'll buy all of his books on topics you need. I came to this conclusion when I attended a tech. conference, Chicago in April of 2000. Thanks, Mark ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Like having your own personal guru...
Unless you're a complete and total desktop OS geek, there's a good chance that you'll run into things you want to do but can't figure out in Windows XP.I received a review copy of a book that would definitely assist in those cases...Windows XP MVP by John Barnett with Curt Simmons, Alan Simpson, and David Dalan.
5-0 out of 5 stars solid discussion of customising Internet Explorer
This book is directed towards a sysadmin, or even a user, who only has a slight acquaintance with Microsoft Windows XP. It clearly explains a lot of the needs that many users might have.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Addition to the Windows XP Library
This is a fine, answers-based book that covers a lot of the same ground as other Windows books, but boasts a superior focus on solutions. Maybe that's because the lead author is a Microsoft Most Valuable Professional specializing in Windows XP help. This book is very well organized, with all of the information oriented toward accomplishing a task. Most of the marginally useful fluff that you find in most XP book is absent here, and the information is of top quality throughout. I've already put this to good use in fine-tuning my networked small office setup. An added bonus in the book is a slew of great MVP tips and techniques from the author and his team of high-qualified pros. This is a worthy addition to any XP library. In fact, once you have this book I predict that you'l start going to it regularly, and certainly before any of the others. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I highly recommend this book to anyone that is looking for a great reference for GPO's and IntelliMrrror technology. A very easy read, that keeps you interested & has a nice logical progression on how to implement these technologies.

3-0 out of 5 stars Like a City Map for Tourists
For anybody who has to do an automated deployment, you're looking for a reference that lays out the technology like a Thomas Guide map - but this title is more like a Chamber of Commerce Tourist Map; it will show you all of the main points of downtown, but not much more and nothing in extreme detail. Within this title, the author attempts to cover automation theory, automated deployment (scripted, sysprep, and RIS), application deployment via GPOs, VBScript, WMI, ADSI and even a mini-course in HTML; All that in a little over 500 pages. 5-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Thorough!
Windows 2000 has been out for over 2 years (including the beta). I have been surprised as to how few NT administrators have learned, much less utilized the intense level of scripting automation built into the OS.This book may help turn that corner! After all, nothing can be more mind-numbing that watching a CD-based install. And this tackles that issue, whetting an appetite for "what else can I automate," only to provide step-by-step tools on how to script all of the mundane.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
This is the best DNS book I have read to date for supporting Windows 2000 DNS. If you can only afford one book on Windows 2000 DNS , this is the one to have, Paul and Cricket's knowledge and experience with DNS and Bind far exceeds all others! 5-0 out of 5 stars Very well explained by experienced DNS people
I needed to get a grasp on DNS generally, and was told "DNS and BIND" was the best book existing. Unfortunately it was too fat a book for me. It spent too much time on BIND which was of no interest for me. Luckily I dicovered a slimmer version called "DNS on Windows NT" by the same authors. A fresh MCSE on NT4, I was really happy for this title. Full of expectations I started reading. And I was not dissapointed. It was like finding an easily accessible gold mine.So if you need knowledge on DNS generally, or onDNS on Windows NT4 specifically, don't hesitate. Buy this book!

1-0 out of 5 stars CDs dont work
I got this book to take a brief look at it and install the cds. The CDs need a CD Key, which is not provided with the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get ready to rumble with Windows Nt Server
I currently work as an Oracle DBA using Windows Nt Server 4.0 as the operating system.Part of my job requires maintaining two Nt Server 4.0 machines and One standalone Server.I use the Standalone Server as anInternet Information Server with Front Page 98 clients, Back OfficeProducts, and Visual Interdev development environments. The Windows NtServers are used to run Oracle Database in a client server environment. Iused the Windows Nt Bible to set up a Primary Domain Control a BackupDomain Control, set up a client connect to a Network client, and activatethe Windows Internet Server on the Standalone server. The keycharacteristics, I found appealing in the book was:the book was writtenwith the idea, the reader wants to implement a Nt server immediately (cutthe fluff). The second concept, I liked was each chapter provided concisedescriptions that help the reader understand the Windows Nt ServerArchitecture, such as, network layers, network adapters, communicationprotocols, growing your network, and installing internet informationserver. The third concept, I like was the interesting stories relating tothe authors experiences while working a Microsoft. The stories are just, cool! Bottom line, the book work for me, to get my job done.I believethe Window Nt Server book can help you get started using Windows Nt Server4.0!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Work!
A friend of mine recommended this book to me several years ago.Uponreading it, he went from a job as a roofer to an MCSE professional makingsignificantly more money.I bought and read it, and was amazed how Heywoodwas able to explain very complicated concepts in a very understandable way. I achieved MCSE status as well in short order, largely relying on thisbook, and tripled my salary. No guarantee, but this book covers a greatdeal of the material you need to know to be an effective Microsoft expert. I passed the MS TCP/IP exam using only the TCP/IP chapter as preparation. For those of you wanting to achieve MCSE status before the 12/31/00deadline, pick up this book and read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inside Windows NT4 Server
This is an excellent computer book. It was the only book I used to pass three core exams and the TCP/IP exam.NB.I also used resources from the web.It is absolutely essential to do practice exams before the real exam.

1-0 out of 5 stars C++ programmmer trying to learn COM
The book is riddled with errors. It's ridiculous how much time I've wasted trying to fix the author's mistakes in the code. While the content might be worthwile from an academic standpoint, the time you'll spend debugging the examples will drive you crazy. Very pool editorial quality.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good teacher, dated, and brutally sloppy production
The author knows how to write and teach. He leads you through some examples and through a lot of code and wizards. The examples are detailed, but for Visual Studio 6, and sometimes a little cryptic for those who are using .Net/VS7.VS7 changes a lot, so a lot of his code examples don't really apply anymore, though VS7 is backwards compatible (mostly), so if you type what the VS6 wizards generate, it'll still work.

4-0 out of 5 stars Essential reference material
This book is essential material for someone interested in knowing how NT really works. I discovered it a few years ago, and it immediately freed me from having to peer through a kernel debugger, darkly, trying to figure out interfaces.
2-0 out of 5 stars Good Reference not much MEAT to it
Ok, usually I do not write reviews on books that I get, because I just don't care to. This time I have to. Not too long ago I received this book, and too my suprise it was TINY. I wasn't looking for a beginners book, but at the same time I was looking for a good reference book. Unfortunately, if you are looking for a complete reference, this isn't the book for you. Here is my break down on different categories,I feel are important to me.5-0 out of 5 stars Badly Needed Reference to the Dimly Illuminated World of NT
This book is the first and only reference of its type. It delves deep into the harsh and uncompromizing world of NT internals. No other book documents these APIs as clearly or acurately (Not even Microsoft's own documentation such as it is). This is suprizingly refreshing especially given that much of this information ISN'T DOCUMENTED AT ALL _ANYWHERE ELSE_!!! Thus even a mediocre reference would have been a welcome reprieve. However, there is nothing mediocre about this rendition. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Helps if you look at the content
As a note to A reader from LLNL, CA., yes this book covers DCOM (which is out of date),BUT it is primarily about building DISTRIBUTED applications using COM with Visual C++ 6.1-0 out of 5 stars Remarkably *DEAD* technology
Micro$oft is famous for its ability to push out new development technologies. The reason behind this planned obsolesence is obvious, every time they come out with something new people will have to open their wallets to "keep up."5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptionally Understanding/Informational/Instructional
I have read multiple books relating to COM/DCOM topics and I find that most of them tend to be very hard to follow/comprehend.Jim tends to re-emphasize his points so that you don't have to turn back the page to continue following along. In my mind I am asking a question and low and behold the answer is on the next line.Read more

Editorial Review

People don't sit at desks in offices the way they used to, and that's why the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) makes sense: it allows efficient allocation of Internet Protocol (IP) addresses and other configuration values to a shifting pool of networked devices. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars here you go
It's a easy subject to explain but once you try and implement a DHCP server, you'll find out how complicated it really can get. Mostly because people take DHCP servers for grandite. Their in the back of the room, lurking in the shadows, working quiety and silently. THeir so redundent, you'd never know their were their till everything fubar's. The book is only 230 pages (not 400 like the spec's say) it is indepth at some but shallow at others. If that makes any sense. It's not a beginner's book, so it requires a basic intro understanding of dhcp and what it does. This is a great book if you want to know how to do your job, it gives you more information then you'll need, but isn't that the way it should be? :) I'm using it to help with that 70-216 but I'm not the type of person to read a book that is specifically meant for a test. I'd rather read the requirements of the test and buy 5 books that cover them. Don't choose an answer because it's right, choose it because all others are wrong.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Windows 2000 Admininstration and exam Reference
I found this book to be absolutely essential to an understanding of the integration between DHCP and DDNS in Windows 2000. The book is very logically laid out, and is clearly written by a person who knows this subject intimately. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great general guide
I read the reviews for "SAMS Teach yourself Windows 2000 server in 21 days" after I had already bought this one. I'm glad I went with this choice, as the material is updated and makes the needed comparisons between W2K server and Windows NT server. Jeremy Moskowitz(Sosinsky only writes 5 chapters) outlines all the important features and processes using easy to follow real-world examples. Myself being an NT guru, but not knowing a thing about 2000, found the comparisons especially helpful. If you need a book to read over the weekend to go start setting up a W2K network on Monday, this is the book. Loads of information, easy to follow.

5-0 out of 5 stars My job was made simple.
Extremely well written and helpful.Worth it's weight in gold.

4-0 out of 5 stars Really Helpful Book!
I purchased this book after my company asked me about the pros and cons of upgrading our small company to Windows 2000.The examples in the book were very helpful and the writing was very clear. The book is very readable, and doesn't put you to sleep!Since the book is made for people (like me)who need a crash course in the topic, the book obviously can't delve intoall the minutia of W2K.But it covered a whole lot and gave me much moreinformation than I thought I'd get. It's a great beginner tointermediate-level book on the topic, and I definitely recommend it! ...
