5-0 out of 5 stars Dummy No More
This book is well written and well laid out. It can be used as a reference or as a learning tool for those less knowledgeable on computer stuff. I just advanced from Windows 98 and this made the leap/transition much easier and less confounding.

5-0 out of 5 stars "REAL DUMMIE" BEFORE..WITH THIS BOOK,MAKES A BEGINNER FEEL LESS LIKE A "DUMMIE"
MY FIRST COMPUTER...(DID NOT HELP THAT THE COMPUTER WAS A LEMON, AND THE COMPANY REPLACED IT)I NOT ONLY DID NOT UNDERSTAND "COMPUTER" LANGUAGE, I DID NOT EVEN KNOW HOW TO TURN IT OFF WITH OR WITHOUT POWER-BUTTON.ANY ONE WANTING TO KNOW "HOW TO" SHOULD GET THIS BOOK.LIKE IT SAYS..YOU DON'T SIT AND READ IT LIKE A NOVEL...YOU HAVE A QUESTION...YOU LOOK IT UP IN THE BOOK...NOW IF SOMEONE WOULD COME UP WITH A COMPUTER DICTIONARY FOR ALL THE TERMS ETC. USED IN "COMPUTER LANGUAGE"!!!!BUY THIS...YOU WON'T REGRET IT!

3-0 out of 5 stars Its not a teaching book.
The book for the most part is having a discussion with you about Windows XP.Offering comments or critiques. It is not a book that I would recommend for learning via book.A Few areas actually go into depth.I see it as a PowerPoint presentation discussion about basics XP and should have been sold as.It lacked detail in networking and wireless needed for many user/owner issues. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good things, bad things...
Good:
4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but too much fluff...
I've been a Server OS administrator since 1991, starting with Novell 3.12. I started with OS2, Novell and then Windows NT in 1995 at the second largest retailer in the US and I've worked my way through NT 3.5 to 2003. I bought Minasi's NT 4.0 books and thought they were the greatest thing going, but I was still green and the other publishers were not up to speed. Now I own the Windows Server 2003 books Inside Out, Unleashed and Administrators Companion. I have read much of Minasi's 2003 book, but I doubt I'll buy it. I have to say that Minasi's writing style now forces serious administrators to waste a great deal of time wading through the fluff. His book is one of, if not the thickest and it's not because of the technical information. Just like his articles in magazine publications, his writing is oriented towards new or amateur administrators. I think if you have 2 of, or the 3 books I mentioned previously, you can skip Minasi's Server 2003 book. The single area where Mark has an edge over the other books is his discussion of compatibility with older, downlevel or non-MS workstation client OSes such as DOS, Mac, Workstation, etc. This same information was covered in his earlier NT 4.0 and Win2000 books, so if you have any of them, you're ok there.

5-0 out of 5 stars A response to Joaquin Menchaca from an Apple Certified Tech Coordinator
You know, there are times I despair at the treatment of Macintoshes in Windows-centric books. Obsolete information, badly written explanations of Mac technology, and general "macs can't do that" comments. I'll flip through Windows books at the store and shudder at the nonsense they spread about Macs.

2-0 out of 5 stars Out of date now
Python has come a long way. This book does not instruct you on any of the newest features or capabilities.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great
I am new to Python and really, really like this book. I have read it cover to cover twice. It is obviously biased in favour of Python, but goes out of its way to explain the "gotchas" and things that are not intuitive. All in all, a WAY above average computer book!

2-0 out of 5 stars Definitely not a reference book
This book isn't horrible, but it meanders all over the place. It often confuses the issue by using several concepts in one example. There are too many instances where a technique is shown but then explained several chapters later. Sometimes this is necessary in language books, but this book abuses the idea.

1-0 out of 5 stars shipping problems
Haven't got it yet. paid over 20$ for next day delivery as was offered, and when I checked the order it said estimated delivery date was 6 days later. Called cstmr srvc and Amanda argued with me about how I was wrong about the delivery date that was offerd. When I asked about the charge she just ignored me and kept talking about how I was wrong and the item wasnt available for next day delivery. So I asked for a supervisor and instead of her saying ok, tried to argue with me some more. I had to yell at her to get a super on the phone. Anyways the super tried to tell me the same thing, but after actually looking at my order he then changed his story and assured me it would arrive on time or the shipping charges would be dropped guess we'll just have to wait and see. Thanks for your great cstmr srvc AMAZON!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent preparation
I purchased this book for study purposes after taking a class that was supposed to completely prepare you to pass the 70-290 exam.Thinking that this would be mostly review, I tore into the material last week when I got it and found that it is way more in depth than my class was.Excellent depth and the writing style is easy to follow.

5-0 out of 5 stars a work still in progress, but quite intriguing
WCF is a very promising new technology being put out by Microsoft. You should take note that it is still actively a work in progress. Made clear both by the text in the book and by postings from other reviewers and the authors. There is indeed a potential drawback, inasmuch as specific coding details may get obsoleted by an eventual stable production release. But before you are tempted to turn away, keep in mind that the very title cover of the book says "Beta Edition". The advantage is an early, informal look at WCF.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good Initial Perspective on WCF
Gives a good MSFT perspective on WCF and the HOWTO get up & running with WCF.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very well written book
This a very well written step by step guide to WCF. Though the book does not reflect the changes in June CTP, it presents the concepts in a nice, easy to understand manner. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn Windows Vista
Ever since I bought Stanek's Windows Server Inside Out last year, he's become the one author I turn to whenever I want to learn a new technology. His books are always concise and to the point, and I like that. When I was looking to study for my MCSE recently, I bought his book as soon as I saw it. It was no different for me with this book, I ordered it as soon as I saw it and I can't wait to read it cover to cover, dogear the pages, and highlight like crazy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The book is truly excellent and unparalleled in detail
I have owned this book for at least seven years and have made a couple of good attempts to read/study it with some success as it may not be the best first book for programming the Win32 API although it certainly treats the subject in excruciating detail and with insights garnered by the two authors who are two of the most consummately professional programmers in the world - Brent Rector and Joseph Newcomer. For example Herb Schildt's Programming Windows 98 from the Ground Up teaches WIN32 programming and I find myself more productive in less time studying that book, even though WIN32 programming teaches with a philosophy that one is (ultimately) going to be writing large multifile programs, and this philosophy isn't apparent in Schildt's book. Additionally, an added bonus of Win32 Programming are the insights one gets into writing more robust and professional code - the C code (and there is a lot of it - 140,000 lines included on the CD ROM) has been written by the very best programmers.Additionally, the treatment of each topic is probably more in depth in this book - one example being the discussion of the GDI. More advanced topics included are chapters on writing a DLL, writing an MDI application, and writing multithreading applications. Finally, at 1500 pages the book is reference-like and also like a textbook thus I would assume that it may well take the better part of a year to study each chapter and the associated applications, making it one of the finest and most comprehensive books ever written on WIN32 API programming. I paid $50 for it at UCLA and the book has stood the test of time and proves to be an invaluable work well worth the cost. Finally, this book would seemingly rank among the most professional and scientific computer science/programming titles ever written - certainly it would be one of the most massive - the index is around 200 pages long in itself!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but needs editting
Very good on the level of detail, and incredible on the pitfalls and specific problems they found when actually writing the code for the examples.Be careful, though - a number of the tables (and even some of the printed code samples) contain typos and other minor errors (like missing headings, making one table pretty useless!).You can figure out what's wrong, but if you just use this as a reference and happen to hit a section with an error you might not catch it without reading the accompanying text.I read it through, rather than as a reference, and it was clear which parts of the text had only been lightly checked for the latest edition.4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference, not for beginners
If you are an experienced Win32 programmer looking for a good reference, or you learned MFC but want to know what's going on under the hood, this is the book for you.If you are a beginner looking for a book to teach you how to program Windows, do not get this book.Lots of tables, just the right amount of code examples, lots of real-world advice, and a 200-page index. This book does not cover MFC. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Test Preparation, but also a lot of Basic Material
It has taken a while to get this book published. 1230 pages of material takes a lot of time to put together. Obviously the stated aim of this book is to prepare the student to take the exam. However, even if you are not planning on taking the exam, the material covered here is a complete book on Windows Server 2003 Networking. It covers everything from defining TCP/IP to troubleshooting nearly any kind of trouble.

PC Magazine is always a great source for computer technical information, and this book is a good example. It is technical yet easy enough for lay people to read and understand. Each topic is independent of the others, so if you are looking for a specific solution, you can find it.I recommend it.

I have been teaching in our town's senior center since April '2000.This is an update to the book we have been using and find it to be an excellent source for beginners and those a little more experienced.

5-0 out of 5 stars Teach yourself visually
this is a book on windows xp and everything you ever wanted to know and how to do things with xp windows

4-0 out of 5 stars I thought it did the job.
It reviewed some pretty elementary Windows procedures, and I didn't need some of that...but then it answered the questions I had concerning differences from Windows 98 nicely. I really like the "visually" concept very much and it is super in that regard, too. I used it in conjunction with the XP tutorial that came already loaded with the software. For me, the book was a big time saver with easy reference of different subjects. Particularly good if you're "spotty" on some of your basic skills. I did think it was a little oddly organized, but everything I needed was there, and that's what counted for me. I recommend this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have
I've been working on Linux kernel driver for sometime and recently started porting my driver to Windows platform, which is totally new to me. I started by going through DDK online manual for over a month, during which I spent a ton of energy trying to find the Windows counterparts of the functions I'm using in Linux driver. Then I came across this book, which is saving me a lot.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for my needs given my experience.
Oney's book provided the right overview and explanations I needed to get up to speed. I didn't expect a man to pop out of his book and do the work for me. Most any serious development is never done by the purchase of a book alone. 3-0 out of 5 stars Be careful

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and complete.
Not only does this kit provide excellent study material, but it will alsoprove to be an invaluable reference afterward. For people (like me) whocannot afford the instructor-led courses, this kit provides the necessarytraining to not only pass the exams, but also to be a good networkengineer. Use one of the study guides just before the exam, but use thiskit to gain a thorough understanding of the material first.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent companion piece to Adam Nathan's bible...
If you are doing .NET -> Native interop., this book should pretty have almost all that you need. Note that it does not cover COM (RCW) interop in that much detail and does not talk about CCW (COM -> .NET). However, the coverage of MarshalAs() and the clever examples that show how to deal with the complex DirectX structures are alone worth the price of admission.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to get started using the Win32 API w/ .NET
I am an intermediate programmer, who in the past, has done some Visual Basic 6 and Win32 API integration programming. After learning VB.NET and C#, I found that the .NET Framework was missing some functionality of the Win32 API, which surprised me a little since Microsoft is really pushing .NET as the "API" of choice for developers.5-0 out of 5 stars This book Rocks
Let's face it, .NEt is really cool, but it isn't a finished product. For everything else, there's this book.He has some Great examples and explains everything amazingly well.I'm a book junkie and this is definitely one of the best books I've come across recently.I think this book would be a tremendous asset to anyone who wants to learn how to get around .NET's current limitations. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth it
I bought this book at Borders knowing that it was about customizing and not "hacking."What I didn't know was that you had to download so many programs from the web, which many people (including myself) are not comfortable with, before you can begin customizing in the first place.I've experienced problems with several of the things the author says to download, and found spyware on my computer, which is brand new, that was not previously there (VVSN.exe, a registered security risk according to liutilities.com).I would not recommend this book to anyone; I'm sure there are better ones out there that are more worth your time and money.

3-0 out of 5 stars Only OK -- Mostly Surface Hacks, nothing too deep
I was hoping for a more in-depth guide to XP, but this book is mostly surface changes to the appearance.Cute, but hardly deep hacking.I'll probably be selling this book very soon, if that tells you what a treasure it is.

1-0 out of 5 stars DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY

2-0 out of 5 stars Either Get the Book From the Library or Buy It Used
If you are not familiar with Leonhard's books, you might want to check this book out of the library, or buy it cheaply used. In my opinion, this book is a sad example of a publisher and editors allowing an author's personality to destroy what would have been an excellent reference book.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not really a reference -- more like a ramble
This book could have used a thorough editing. It is supposed to be a "desk reference," which to me means you can look up information quickly. However, it's hard to find what you're looking for here. The worthwhile information is buried in the everyday stuff that I already knew, so to find what I wanted, I had to wade through many pages of material I was already familiar with.2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this book for beginners, intermediate, or expert computer users.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Is This the Best There Is?
I am a very experienced C/C++ software engineer currently taking a community college class on WinSock networking programming. I'm used to dealing with difficult text books. However this is one of the worst I have ever wrestled with.1-0 out of 5 stars The worst book
I'd not recommend to read this book - waste of time. First 13 chapters contain tons of unimportant information about specifications, history and general words about how networking is great. Although these chapters contained a bit of example code - this didn't work at all. Since the 13th chapter there is a terrible example of a full scale FTP client that is totally unclear. At that point I closed the book. My friend had the same book, he went further - threw the book away.4-0 out of 5 stars Secondary Reference, Even for Windows
Although this book is focused on Windows and most of my (current) programming focuses on that, I usually end up referring to two UNIX books instead ("UNIX Network Programming" and "Advanced Programming for the UNIX Environment"). Those books have nearly identical syntax, but do a better job of explaining things. For Windows, there are some peculiarities (i.e., shortfalls) that you need to be aware of, so you really should own all three books, as I do. The amount of time that you save will be well worth it. ... Read more

Editorial Review

The command line isn't dead--far from it. Administrators of big Windows NT networks know that the best way to accomplish a difficult task frequently involves using the console interface rather than the graphical user interface. By writing batch routines, it's relatively easy to perform fancy tasks on local computers and distant ones. In Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best overview of the Windows Command Shell available
Although this book was authored in 1998, it is still as relavent today with Windows Server 2003 as it was when Windows NT 4.0 was first released. The fact is that the Command Shell hasn't changed all that much over the years and Timothy Hill's book remains the best guide to using and writing command scripts that I could ever recommend. And with Windows Server 2003's push to be able to do everything from the command line that one can do from the GUI, it's even more important to fully understand how the Windows Command Shell works.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Great book on NT shell commands that Microsoft doesn't even document. Not even "command /?" gives you any help.5-0 out of 5 stars It doesn't get better than this. Now we need a 2nd edition.
If you have a bit of programming experience, this book together with access to the NT Resource Kit tools will provide you with the foundation for doing almost anything you could imagine within Windows NT Shell Scripting.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Opens Up the Inside of Your Server
As you sit there watching your server doing its thing, you kind of have to wonder just what's going on inside the box. Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM), Systems Management Server (SMS) and Windows System Update Services are packages that Microsoft has developed to provide you with a view into what's going on inside the box.
