Cryptographic techniques have applications far beyond the obvious uses of encoding and decoding information. For Internet developers who need to know about capabilities, such as digital signatures, that depend on cryptographic techniques, there's no better overview than Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have book for understanding Cryptography.
This book has really shed a lot of light on cryptography for me. I honestly can't put it down--I wish I had paid more attention in my statistics classes so I could be able to apply some of the stuff the author talks about better. I am about half way through the book, and I haven't gotten to the point where it's more of a chore than a pleasure to read it (something I can't about my other technical books).
5-0 out of 5 stars Prepare to drink from the firehose
This book is really incredible. When it was first published in the mid-90's, there was almost no material available on the subject of cryptography. Now, ten years later, there are dozens, if not hundreds, of books riding on Schneier's coattails - but almost none have anything new or useful to say.Impeccably researched (with 1,653 references!) and unarguably complete, Schneier's expertise in theoretical mathematics, experience as a practitioner, and razor-sharp lucidity combine to make this the only book you'll ever need on the subject of cryptography.

5-0 out of 5 stars You can't be talking about this book!
I checked twice to make sure I was reading reviews of the book I am currently reading(now on Ch 8), because this is an excellent book. Before I begin - one caveat - I have the the Networking Basic, CCNA 1 Companion Guide (cc 2006) not the CCNA 1 & 2 Companion Guide. However, judging by the contents and excerpt it appears that Part I of this book is the same as the book I am reading.
2-0 out of 5 stars Crappy book
I am teaching a networking course and am using the CCNA 1 and 2 Companion Guide as the required textbook for the class. I am very surprised that I am presently on Chapter 8 and I am still talking about Ethernet. I know Ethernet is an important subject matter, but it could be reduced to two chapters at best. The book, thus far, is way too technical for the students in my class. Thus, it simply isn't for students who are beginning their journey into networking. For the bang for my buck, I would recommend Todd Lammele's CCNA book, something to the point. The instructor could expand on the important material that the students need to know and the book would stress key points. I am CCNA and CCNP certified with practical experience so I believe I am qualified to know what is needed for students wanting to enter the networking field and like I said, the book has good info, but it is spread so far apart and is too technical for someone with little or no experience. I have talked to the Dean about this book and have recommended that another book be used. Cisco books are usually good for experienced people in the field.

1-0 out of 5 stars Be warned
Don't buy this book unless your instructor specifically requires it.Terribly written with virtually no sign of editing, it's a struggle to read and, when covering extremely technical issues, virtually incomprehensible.Worse, the content does not exactly match the on-line curriculum, meaning that Cisco on-line tests typically ask questions about topics not covered in the relevant book chapter.Even worse, the answers to the tests in the book don't match the questions being asked.Buy the Sybex CCNA book instead; although it's not written to match the on-line course, it will help clarify networking, and not leave the reader frustrated and feeling cheated.

3-0 out of 5 stars Helps to get the job done
This book alone covers about 85% of what you need to know to pass the test.I would recommend a cbt or transender on the topic as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book just give you a background of window 2003 feature
I have this book because I purchase MCSE Training kit (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0735619530/ref=pd_rvi_gw_2/102-4874099-2083325?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=283155) in order to prepare to take an MCSE certificate. Currently I just finish reading this book. I didn't review an MCSE training kit because I didn't read the other three books.
1-0 out of 5 stars not a good book, not at all
I would like to give it a zero star if it were there. I read it through but it totally disappointed me. it left so much out, totally uncovered, such as terminal server, which is listed as examinable part. Even the 70-270 book from microsoft press is a total rubbish. The parts covered are not deep enough to help you understand for the exam. For those who work on MSCE, I highly recommend sybex books in stead of Microsoft RUBBISH. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Develop Advanced Financial Modeling Skills
As a university teacher of strategic corporate finance and optimal investment, I have watched the financial industry analytics transcend hand calculation with financial calculators to financial modeling with spreadsheet software. Depending on whether the financial specialty is in corporate or banking/brokerage, the job skills requirement can range from corporate cost control to optimal portfolio design. Thus, modeling skills services both company research and financial planning.

4-0 out of 5 stars basic review of computer applications
This is a great book, very user friendly for the novice computer user.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book. Highly Recommended!
I just finished using this book in a self-paced, college course. It's an excellent one.I never had any trouble following the step-by-step instuctions and I rarely had to ask my instructor for any help. The only drawback is if you want to go back and do any of the exercises over again months later as a review, you can't, because you need the data files from the course. I guess I could have saved all of them but that would have taken about 30 floppy disks which is the only option I had. The Access database alone is huge. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A prefect choise for CCNA exam preparation
CCNA INTRO Exam Certification Guide and CCNA ICND Exam Certification Guide by Wendell Odom are prefect choise for CCNA exam preparation. Both books are easy to read for non-native English speakers (like me), all concepts are well explained and illustrated with good examples. Books also covers all exam topics, I used only those books for exam preparation and I answered all questions except one.

5-0 out of 5 stars CCNA ICND Exam Certification Guide
Excellent book and I got it overnight. it is clearcut and precise and not techy talk
2-0 out of 5 stars Recurring problem
I purchased this book set and passed the INTRO exam easily but have failed the ICND exam twice. I found the exam to be much more difficult than the practice questions. 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best ASP.NET books
I finished reading this book yesterday and I am very pleased with it. The author starts by explaining some programming basics for both languages (VB.NET and C#). Then he explains ASP controls (html controls and validation controls). During the rest of the book, he develops a web-based intranet and explains many features of ASP such as ADO.NET, DataGrid and DataList controls, DataSets, etc. There is a chapter where the author explains how we can build a shopping cart and connect it to paypal which I found very interesting. The code is very neat and easy to understand. I totally recommend this book to those who would like to learn ASP.NET as well those who want to expand their ASP.NET knowledge.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best .Net Book
The best thing about this book is someone like me who is new to the .DOT NET was able to learn & the paralell comparison between the VB & C# code is excellent. The only disappointment is that with the text book I was expecting a CD with Adobe Reader version as well. Which I did not recieve.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ecellent for covering SEO basics
This book is the best start to learning SEO. It covers all the SEO basics which may be all you need to get a decent listing. I'd say that the basics are 90% of rankings. My sites which I can't list due to the review policies enjoys about 5 keywords on page 1 of Google and Yahoo. It would have been a 5 star rating but I felt not enough changed from the prior revision.
5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE this book!
While in the process of working on my new website, I came across this book and ordered it right away based on other reviews. I was not disappointed. It's a must for anyone getting ready to launch a new site or anyone wanting to drive more traffic to their already built site. Even if you think you know a lot about keywords and SEO, this is an excellent buy. It did for me what a company specializing in SEO wanted to do for $8,000. I'm sure the SEO company would have provided an excellent service, but by reading this book, I've learned how to do it myself and will now know how to tweak my site in the future.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for Newbies
If you're up-to-date with all the latest and greatest this is mainly a review. However, if you're not completely familiar with the terms and usage of SEO this is a great book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
The Chapters are really good and easily understandable. Point to be highlighted here is that the author has explained examples with SAP GUI Screen Shots. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great SD book for experienced consultants, too
I've been an SD functional consultant since 1993 and have recently started working on a very small project as the only SD consultant. Even though I've configured most aspects of SD, I haven't done it all, nor have I done it alone. Since I'm an independent consultant, this book has helped me to get a grasp of all that I need to do and what questions I need to pose to the client. This is the best SD book that I've seen - a definite keeper in my library.

If you are a new SAP user, you should definetely read this book. It highlights the SAP basics, but if you are looking for more advanced and technical explanations you should search for other books.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great collection of everything SAP, if your patient
If your willing to wade through the different focus, you will find this a very useful book. It is by no means complete but nonetheless highlights how SAP has evolbved from R/3 to mySAP ERP and Business Suite, and ties in and explains Netweaver and where ECC fits in. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book on programming new features
This book is clearly written and I feel it does a good job of covering the major new features of SQL Server 2005 well enough so you can get up to speed quickly and save enough time versus puzzling things out using just the online materials that come with SQL Server 2005 to easily justify the purchase price and reading time.A number of people with expertise in various aspects of SQL Server collaborated on this book, and the value of the information in each area reflects the depth of expertise.

Well, I have been digging into Andrew and Stephen's latest work for a few days now and have been very happy with the results. This book is comprehensive and covers the gambit of topics, including some favorites of mine such as T-SQL, XML, CLR integration, Service Broker, Integration Services, Reporting Services, SMO, and OLAP. I just read the beta version of the second edition cover to cover in just a couple of days, and I love it, the content as well as the exposition. The first edition only gets four stars, though, because the second edition contains a lot of updates worth waiting for.Even in its rought beta state it's a great resource, and I'm looking forward to seeing the finished book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The only book I've used cover to cover
In all my years of reading, using and reviewing technical books, this is the first title I've read cover to cover, and in so doing actually built the sample application from start to finish. Most other books use a series of disconnected This book was my first foray months ago into the beautiful world of Rails development, and continues to function as the crowned jewel in my reference library anytime I have a question about Rails or Ruby.

1-0 out of 5 stars Needs more examples!
I think this guy has a book about how the inmates are running the asylum...well this book suffers from what happens when the subject matter experts (SME) are allowed to write books.BORING!!!SME's always seem to forget to include compelling examples.Yes there are little screen shots, but IMO in order for a book to be compelling that has to do with design...it needs to show LOTS of examples of good design. The bulk of the book should be about breaking down those designs.I need to hear why a specific design is effective.Take a hint from Steve Krugs book "Don't Make me Think".That book is extremely effective without inundating the reader with jargon.Lots of examples withmeaningful visual breakdowns.Afterall...isnt UI design a VISUAL communication form?

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for experienced developers
I have 7 years experience and I wasn't able to get any value out of this book.Based on some of the reviews on this site I thought that the book would be worth buying but unless you are in school or right out of school then your $35 is better spent elsewhere.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good on concepts, weaker on examples
This follow up to About Face is a good overview of the critical concepts to improve software usability.Cooper and Reiman know their stuff.Reading this certainly provides you with the grounding you need to make good decisions. At a tactical level, the book could certainly do more to help with real-world examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars if you're developing with SIP, you need this book
I'm a working developer that recently became engaged in a J2EE project where needed to design and build a SIP server for a call center requiring all manner of specialized behaviors. Needless to say I needed to learn all about the ins and outs of SIP as this system would be SIP VoIP based.

5-0 out of 5 stars Network textbook
This is a great book for learning the CCNA material. It will teach you all of the major points that you need to study to pass the exam. Even if you are not taking the exam and just want information on how networks are designed, this is the book. I found it a good read and the practice CD was priceless in learning how to issue commands to the various Cisco routers. A great book and worth the money too!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Clearify something....5 stars not accurate...
Everyone here critizes<< typos here and there.. lacking this and lacking that... WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND if this book is so bad... remember that next time you write a negative review.. that will help us (the newbies) know where to get this right information....
3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointingand frustrating
For the last 3 years I would have sworn by Todd Lammle's CCNA Study Guides; mainly do to his free-hearted writing style that seem to add an element of humor to complex reads. However, this book has far too many errors and lacked technical intensity. In the past, I used Todd's 607 Study Guide to pass the archived 607 exam on the first try.Two and half years later, I purchased the 801 Study Guide with the same enthusiasm. After reading this book twice, taking all 8 bonus exams repeatedly, and exhausting the capabilities of the simulation software, I took the comprehensive 801 exam this weekend and did not pass!My exam had multiple questions that were not covered in Lammle's book. Not to mention the lack of coverage of NAT, that seems to magically show up on my exam.None of which was covered with enough detail within this book. Moreover, the Virtual Lab was not exhaustive and far too basic (No OSPF, EIGRP or NAT simulation capabilities). In my opinion, this is not acceptable. Especially when I was faced with these topics through out my exam.I wish this book did a better job of pinpointing the areas that were and would be crucial on the exam.Although Todd Lammle attempted to do place emphasis on certain points, none of those points showed up on test day.Obviously, Cisco has made the exam harder to achieve by reading materials alone (even there own text). Therefore, accurate and thought-provoking supplemental materials are a must!!The bonus questions simply repeat themselves over-and-over again. The book as a whole lacked coverage on crucial technologies and is filled with confusing statements and answers that turn out to be mistakes- Go figure! All of which, led me to give this book 3 stars (maybe closer to 2 1/2). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Essential For People Who Want To Make Money With Google
'Google Advertising Tools: Cashing in with Adsense, Adwords, and the Google APIs' by Harold Davis is one of those specialty books that is absolutely a must have for anyone that wants to succeed with advertising on Google.Teaching you the ins and outs of how to use the behemoth marketing tools AdSense and AdWords, this book will instantly start producing results if you stick to what this says and learn to make ads that are not only seen, but seen OFTEN.300+ pages of advertising yum yums will get more people to pull over and take a look at your web site, and you will better understand the metrics behind what kinds of advertising works and what DOESN'T.
4-0 out of 5 stars Though not groundbreaking, a comprehensive and current reference on marketing your site through Google
Harold Davis has not necessarily broken new ground with his "Google Advertising Tools" book. Yet, he's managed to put together a volume that summarizes effectively the basics of SEO and how to structure your site to maximize return on investment as a lead into Google Advertising at large. Starting with Google AdSense (placing Google Ads in your site), he works his way into AdWords (buying pay-per-click keyword-based ads) to wrap the book up with a detail discussion about the APIs offered by Google if developing tools to maximize your overall use of Google's interface and options is up your alley.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
I'm just getting in to the "Adsense" arena and I found this book to be quite informative. More than enough to get me started. ... Read more
