2-0 out of 5 stars Tunnelvision
Using this book is like driving without peripheral vision - you can't take the slightest turn off the single path chosen by the authors. Sure, this book will walk you through making a stateless session bean and deploying it on JBoss. But what if you want to make a client? What if you want to use the Eclipse IDE provided by JBoss? Suddenly, you're left on your own. This book may be helpful to someone making a first pass through J2EE, but if you want to use JBoss for any practical purpose, this book is practically worthless.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Text
As an employee of a company that develops web based applications, but not a software engineer in that company, Tom Marrs and Scott Davis's text does a terrific job in putting the disparate pieces that make up a J2EE application together.Their approach of incrementally adding the requisite technologies from each tier, as they carry through a single example, provides remarkable clarity to the discussions of each piece.I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the "nuts and bolts" of a J2EE application. My only caveat is to make sure you read the README.txt file when you download the source code.If you've downloaded a JBoss version later than 4.0.1 (current is 4.0.4) then the code examples beginning in Chapter 5 won't work. The needed change, discussed in the README file, is simple, clearly indicated and works throughout the rest of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent practical guide to JBoss and J2EE
J2EE started out as a specification that left the implementation to each container vendor. It's readily apparent that two of the earliest vendors, WebSphere and WebLogic, implemented J2EE in vastly different ways. As a result, early books on J2EE or Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) frequently either avoided or severely limited the discussion of a specific server because the details were better referenced from server vendors' manuals. JBoss changed that picture. It is an open source Java-based application server which is freely downloadable, plus it is a certified J2EE server.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Standard!
I used this book to deploy Oracle Application Server 10g infrastructure on Linux and UNIX. I felt that it was a good book and overall I have little ill to say about it. The examples are well written and do a good job of reinforcing what you read in the handbook. You read a little then do an example, then read some more, then add to the example and so on. You don't need any Administrative experience to use this book just a decent understanding of application design. The only criticism I could offer is that the editor should have used arrows when content is being continued on a new line for reasons of page space so that readers will know and understand (beginners can have trouble with this). It's a good book for learning Oracle Application Server 10g as a whole from the ground up and for this reason it's worth the money. It's not an overnight crash course (if that is what you are looking for).

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Nice Job
I have taken the iAS 10 Admin I course from Oracle, and wish that I read this book prior to the class.I found it very valuable especially if you are deploying iAS 10g (9.0.4) on Linux.I highly recommend the book to iAS administrators/DBA's.

3-0 out of 5 stars Summary of the White Papers
As an administrator/implementor of these systems, there are many aspects to administering the 10gAS system. Although the authors do make reference the book intends to simplify the rather large amount of documentation, it falls short of a complete guide.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad book to setup DBCP
This book gives a speedstart in getting high level architecture of Tomcat 5. Its discussion, even though not comprehensive, can make you can tell the difference between a valve, a service, an instance, and a server.
3-0 out of 5 stars A collection of articles
This book contains some good information. However, it's clear that the publisher merely solicited a bunch of articles and sort of threw them together without much in the way of an overarching design. The result is that you can find answers to many common Tomcat questions in this book, but others will go unanswered.
4-0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is not a tutorial.
This book is not a tutorial on Apache. Forget about this book if you're seeking to implement the ubiquitous LAMP (Linux, Apache, MYSQL, PHP) combination. Perhaps you wish to complement your pursuit of a computer science degree with some resume enhancing practical skills. Or perhaps you're a seeking some IT certifications, or perhaps you're a hobbyist web developer - in all cases this book contains nothing that couldn't be freely found on an internet search engine. Most of the book's chapters consist of a series of Apache's features with each followed by a cryptic discussion that doesn't actually teach you anything. So unless you're a Apache expert looking for a handy reference to keep close at hand then please buy something else. Like a book that actually does the job of teaching you to do something with Apache.

5-0 out of 5 stars The single best Apache security book in print
I recently received copies of Apache Security (AS) by Ivan Ristic and Preventing Web Attacks with Apache (PWAWA) by Ryan Barnett.I read AS first, then PWAWA.Both are excellent books, but I expect potential readers want to know which is best for them. The following is a radical simplification, and I could honestly recommend readers buy either (or both) books. If you are more concerned with a methodical, comprehensive approach to securing Apache, choose AS.If you want more information on offensive aspects of Web security, choose PWAWA.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book...
This book is worth every single dollar. The examples are very clear and also provide invaluable information about security.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Truly Excellent Book for the "Beginner"
This book is really quite good. It's very interesting & definitely very readable. When I read it, I got straight down to business, so to speak. It gives very practical examples starting you off with making a movie review site which was very interesting! All in all, an excellent book to give you a working knowledge of PHP & MySQL.
5-0 out of 5 stars Solid coverage of beginning topics
I used this book as a tutorial on the subject with graduate students who had only basic programming experience and we all agreed that it was a great way to get started with database-backed PHP work.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Worth One Star

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for web masters
I read this book about a year ago and recently re-read it.Coar and Bowen provide an excellent pragmatic approach to taking care of common Apache administration tasks. The Apache "recipes" are well organized, and presented with sufficient depth to be understandable for intermedia users.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not beginner friendly
The kind of solutions this book gives are not aimed at someone like me, new and uncertain when it comes to linux. This is a dissapointment for me, as I have normally always been very pleased with O'Reilly books.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good accompaniment to other Apache books
As Cookbooks go, this on is fairly decent, although thinner than I expected. There are enough examples in this book to cover pretty much everything you might need to do with Apache or get you started (along with the Apache documentation) if it isn't covered.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Linux "Must Have" book for servers or desktop client
First, I write software professionally. I write software, I am not a Sys Admin (which is hard work I might add; System Administration is for hardcore people.) This book saved me money by giving me answers to problems that would have taken me days to find the answers to by searching the internet.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful and clever
Just a couple days after I had started thumbing through this book my boyfriend picked it up and stole it for 2 weeks. The result? "This book rocks."
3-0 out of 5 stars A simple 'quick tips' book
This book is more of a 'quick tips' book. There are literally thousands of websites that have the same information, and many of them are interactive where you can ask questions, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars MySQL and how to use it effectively!
The book is "A Desktop Quick Reference" just as billed on the cover. It is explicitly MySQL-centric and doesn't stray from that core message. It is extremely up-to-date considering the rapidity of movement in MySQL development progress.
4-0 out of 5 stars Another Solid Nutshell Book
Ah, "Nutshell" books - you gotta love `em. Or maybe you don't. I won't get into the pros and cons of online documentation versus books because this subject has been rehashed ad infinitum. Truth is, there are pros and cons for both, and we each have our own reasons for our own preferences.
4-0 out of 5 stars you need a background in SQL
Well the book certainly seems to cover MySQL's features quite comprehensively. But, as it is a reference manual, it does not attempt to teach you MySQL or the theory of relational databases. For a given MySQL command, the book's explanation is succinct and useful. Provided you already have a background in the area. Much of the book's discussion is probably already available in equivalent form in the online help. But hardcopy is nice to have.

Although this book is a bit dated covering Domino R5, I would still say it has been a very valuable aide in learing Domino/Lotus administration on R6.5.3.I wish there had been some flow charts on the routing process at the end of chapter 8, and some packet header diagrams of the Notes RPC protocol.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed about the installation instructions.
The big reason why I purchased this book was because it claimed it was great about security and it said it would show how to setup these services the correct way.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not Focused
I read every column of paranoid penguin and they are quite good. This book is ok, but not great. They (I mean they because several chapters are not by Mike) try to cover a huge amount of information and make the mistake of being both too broad in some areas and too specific in others.Overall, there wasn't a cohesive glue to bring the chapters together into a single vision.

4-0 out of 5 stars good but soon to be outdated
Everything you need to know about v.1.3, but with Apache 2.0 just around the corner (currently in beta), you might want to hold off until the 2nd edition. This edition touches very briefly on 2.0, providing a general overview of what to expect, but no meat.A lot remains the same, but some critical things are different, and clear documentation of the kind that this book provides for 1.3 is scant.Hopefully something will come out before too long fill the void.3-0 out of 5 stars Good but should have been better
There is a lot of good information contained in this book just waiting to get out.Unfortunately, the poor chapter organisation and the abyssmal index makes finding the information you need (or trying to find it later) a frustrating experience. There's also a lot of padding with CGI and PHP scripts that didn't seem to serve any purpose unless you really wanted to learn how to program 'hello world'. Overall, it will teach you the gist of administrating an Apache Web Server, but I found it disappointing.

This book has saved my hide on a number of occasions and I can't wait to see what he comes up with next. If you only buy one OS X server book this is it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a "must-have" book for all level users related to Apple systems administration.
This book is organized into seven parts and one appendix: from new system installation to remote management and different kind of clients supported.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best MacOS X Server book
For those who are familiar with MacOS X and would like to learn the server-side of the equation, this book is it. Apple's documentation has been sparse and this book covers that deficiency with great aplomb. This is the best Mac OS X Server book on the market right now. Too bad O'Reilly just cancelled the Tiger version because I would have first in line for the next edition.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a book to learn from
This is an odd book. It does not really teach you how to do anything with the Apache software you just downloaded. It just tells you all about the modules, protocols, and so on in a reference type manner. So if you think you're going to learn how to setup a webserver and begin practicing with PHP, XML, HTML and other facets of Web development from this book you would be disappointed. There is nothing practical in here either for an beginner or an expert.

3-0 out of 5 stars "Complete Reference" Is a Mis-Nomer
The trouble with this book can be summed up in the Introduction:

3-0 out of 5 stars Not quite enough
My requirements: Apache+SSL+PHP1-0 out of 5 stars Find something better
This is a 600-page tome that gives you just enough information to make you very dangerous, and a bunch of non-sensical dialog that could have been left out.The book is also full of embarrassing errors and glaringcontradictions. My favorite, in the mod_perl section is, "...whenusing mod_perl to run CGI scripts you cannot use ScriptAlias" followedvery shortly by "You should also have a ScriptAlias directive..." The author probably knows a lot about Apache, but unfortunately isineffective at teaching, a drawback particularly for novices reading hisbook.Too much is left out of this book, and too much is erroneous for youto put your put your faith in it.Try a more professional outfit, likeO'Reilly's Apache: The Definitive Guide. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Linux Web Server CD Bookshelf
The Linux Web Server CD Bookshelf is an excellent valued reference tool for programmers wanting to develop software in an open source web environment. Not only does it contain the full text for six of O'Reilly's best sellers on open source web development, a search engine for each book, and a master index, but also it has a number of relevant articles that have posted to the O'Reilly Network. It has a easy to read web-browser interface.5-0 out of 5 stars Linux web server CD bookshelf
Just as the Web Programmers CD bookshelf that I had the opportunity to read, the searching abilities of the cd bookshelves are excellent. Being able to search a certain topic across 6 books at once makes searching for quick answers easily accomplished. Being able to buy 6 books on a single cd also helps to save money while at the same time helps to build your own library of in depth books. The combination of books included in the Linux web server cd bookshelf has enough detailed information to help teach you the ins and outs of running an Apache web server on a Linux platform. Also the Programming PHP and the Managing & Using MySQL books should help you make full use of your Linux web server and understand the flexibility of what can be done.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Perl Apache Module Reference
While this book is a bit outdated and technology has greatly changed since this text was released in 1999, this is still a solid reference for anyone that works with Apache and still needs to support writing modules with Perl (not as much with C).At a hefty size of over 700+ pages, this text will certainly help you do the job and it's a great bargain for this specialty text.
5-0 out of 5 stars best $2.00 I ever spent!
I bought this book awhile ago USED here on Amazon (for $2.00!), and it was worth every penny!
4-0 out of 5 stars A good book for Perl modules for Apache.
Not much there for C, although it's not too difficult to make use of the Perl topics and covert them to C, it's more geared towards Perl (much more). That's too bad. Still, it's a good book and is very useful for referencing as well as for people looking to learn more about this topic. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for beginners and worthwhile to buy!
Although the title of the book is Apache 2, and it contains full information about it, I learnt from it all the basic things you need to know related to web servers. Being a complete beginner, I learnt not just about Apache, but also about what are SSL, PHP, CGI's, Proxy servers and Tomcat through the book. Everything is explained in plain english and easy to understand. Each chapter has an introductory section that makes it much easier to understand. It's like having the author by your side guiding you.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a good book for beginners
This book covers a wide scope of Apache configurations and operation mechanisms, though so few practical examples present. If you want to gain deep insight into Apache 2, go to another book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great web server introduction
Setting up my first Apache server, I found this book to be an invaluable aid.It discusses Apache's range of capabilities, explains the internal processes involved in serving Web sites, and illustrates typical configuration options. The explanations are simple, straightforward, and organized, and the writing style is encouraging. If I have any complaint, it is that I ran into more build/installation snags with several third-party Apache add-ons than the book predicted.Your mileage will no doubt vary. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Not That spectacular
The book was alright, nothing spectacular. Everything appears to be beyond the scope of the book. I got more information from a one page online article, than I got in this entire book. Yes, yes I've been using apache for quite some time; I'm not a newbie by any means. I just felt it could have been written better, and with more detail, among other things. If you need a reference of some of the things apache could do, and how to do it this book is alright, but if you're looking for a complete reference, this is not it.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book on Apache for Admins and Developers
Whether you're a System Admin or Developer, the Apache Administrator's Handbook will help you understand how to build and administer Apache, as well as help you understand how it works.I've read many books on Apache, and this is by far, one of the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots Of Good Information
Knowing little about web servers and nothing about Apache, I was looking for some detailed help installing and configuring Apache. The online docs were no help.I needed something that would explain, at a basic level, what needed to be done to get Apache going.Read more
