5-0 out of 5 stars The bible
99,9% of Plain OLE is covered. No MFC/OWL/ or anyother compiler-dependent technique. It is the must for the serious programmer.
2-0 out of 5 stars Was a good book but...
much has happened since. This is now looking dated. This was *the* original book on OLE, however, with the subsequent advent of COM, COM+, ActiveX, ATL and .NET means that this book is now something of a period piece. However, the underlying concepts still exist in the majority of PC installations and applications in use today (although expect that to diminish in coming years).OLE (later to become COM and later COM+) had some wonderful, ground-breaking features from an architectural perspective but often the implementation details were very ugly (the Registry, GUIDs, non-unique interfaces, reference counting, etc.).Fortunately, .NET seems to have captured all of the good points, very few of the bad points of OLE, COM, COM+, Java, C++ and VB.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best you can find, for the details of COM and OLE
This book is undoubtedly the best one you will find for the details of COM and OLE.Comment for some of the other reviews: I think it is too bad that because one's lack of ability to read English at a higher-level that youlambaste the author - shame on you, get a dictionary!Brockschmidt needsto provide an update on this text, until then you will have to make do withwhat we have at this time -- if indeed you can find a copy.As for me, myown will stay in my library for reference! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Yes, the examples don't work
I agree with Mr Harteveld. I typed in one example (OLEDBDepartmentATL its called, chapter 9). Typed in to better understand. First it didn't compile, then vars hadn't been initialised - several lines are omitted from book. Once workingit almost but not quite works.2-0 out of 5 stars hmmmmmmm.......
When I bought this book I hoped that the writer EXPLAINED something on how OLE DB or ODBC is contrusted, how it should be used, how it shouldn't be used, some diagrams which showed the visual architecture of some configuration, etc, etc.4-0 out of 5 stars the best authority for OLEDB with VC++
Instead of using ADO in VC++ , I am totally convinced about using OLEDB after reading this book. The whole thing finally make sense. The content is easy to understand and instructional steps with concise codes to follow. It's really worth the money.I hope Chuck can update this volume now that .NET has arrived, especially with regard to XML. We still need OLEDB for VC++ version 7. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The King of all introductory Books about COM technologies
This book is a deep survey of COM within 300 clearly written pages, and many many pictures and schemes. If you are looking for code examples etc. it is NOT FOR YOU. But if you want to understand what is COM, what are COM related technologies; if you are looking for best introduction, it has no rival.

5-0 out of 5 stars A technical accurate, brilliant and clear no code intro
If you are interested in COM this is a must read. Clear, easy to follow, accurate explanation of the concepts. If you are interested in code look at Don Box "Essential COM" book, but read this one first.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book for a high level understanding of COM
This is one of my favorite books. This book gave me an excellent understanding of COM architecture. It's concise and has just the right amount of info. If you are looking for a ready made set of code sample to cut & paste in your project or if you are more interested about 'how' than 'why' of COM then this book is not for you. I have recommended this book and also lent my copy to many. I couldn't keep the book down. An excellent read. David Chappell has done a great job! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible, if you have to write a provider, GOOD LUCK!
Please stop emailing me about books on OLE DB, I have NOT found any better books.Though, I have recently taken a decent course taught be DevelopMentor... though, I'm still not 100% clear on writing providers.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not very useful and poorly edited; not worth the price
This book is simply a bound version of the VC help on OLEDB 2.0. However, it is so lame that it does not cover any of the new Consumer templates which are included with VC6. If you already have VC6, then I would NOTreccommend this book. The Templates provided with VC6 are very powerful, but VERY poorly documented. However, this book will not remedy the problem. Also, what code examples there are(VERY few), are rarely correct in theirsyntax. In my mind, that is unacceptable in a book that is supposed to helpyou in using new, cutting-edge technology. The opnly good thing about thebook is that it does cover the data type enums and other various enumeratedtypes. This is nice, since it is difficult to find adequate help on thesetopics using the online help.2-0 out of 5 stars Confusing mess
I'm pretty new to DataBase programming, and this book is taking me nowhere. The sample code could only be interpretted by one who already knows OLE DB.Anyone out there know of a good book forDB programmingbeginers???I have a good understanding of MFC, COM, ActiveX, etc... Ijust need something to get going on creating custom OLE DB Providers. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Possibly the worst tech book ever published.
In the book's prerequisite chapter, we receive our Com "hard hat" by understanding that dynamic-link libraries are "the long-desired binary compatibility for applications!"Given that the goal of the book is to teach OleDb, such fortune-cookie interjection probably does not suit the reader. An OleDb and Ado "Primer" consumes two thirds of the book, and is an alphabetically organized incomplete subset of the MS documentation.Incomplete because it was edited, and even that was done poorly;Something useful like a description of IDBSchemaRowset is not included, while the interfaces that are chosen retain Microsoft verbiage that would be useful only to an OleDb provider developer.
1-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Awful
I can't think of a single positive about this book. Not only does it fail to teach anything about OLE DB development, the code presented simply does not work. (The author, however, claims that it will.) It actually gets worse, though. If you attempt to try to find any sort of updates, as mentioned by website in the book's introduction, you'll find that the relevant webpages don't exist!1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible book
I just wish I had returned it in time to get my money back. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Kraig write one on COM+
If you really want to understand COM you would read this book. I was impressed by the elegance of the example code. The book basically illustrates it's concepts throught the iterative development of 2 examples. Most of the other books I have looked at that attempt to explain COM arefluff.5-0 out of 5 stars the best and the worthest......print it from msdn and read

1-0 out of 5 stars Not complete, not correct, not supported, not recommended
I am by now several months into a project using the consumer templates. I have to say at this point that the decision to use them was the biggest mistake I have made on this project. They do not make the grade and it is too late to back out and user another interface.
2-0 out of 5 stars Almost ok - READ THIS
As you can see, there are not many books on the subject. However, this book contains very few code lines and it is not organized well. The fact that a programming book does not have even 1 (!) full example can't be good. You will get a fair amount of information from this book; however, YOU WILL visit MSDN regularly. The author spend time on known subjects like performance again and again (although that C++ programmers are well aware to this subject) and less to the whole concept of the templates. He is breaking up all the objects very well, but failing terribly in providing the whole system. A "nice to have" book as a second or third reference. Don't buy it as first.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK book... very lacking in examples
This book isn't exactly what I had hoped for.It seems that only about 30% of the book is actually devoted to "Consumer Templates" and the other 70% talks about raw OLE DB interfaces. However, since it is the only book that covers anything on consumer templates ... it is better than nothing. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent source for ADO and OLE db
I use this book frequently when programming. It is not a beginner book for OLE DB.But it does provide excellent examples in many instances of coding.

4-0 out of 5 stars very helpful once you have a base COM & Ole db understanding
this is the only book I could find on OLE DB besides SDK docs, so for that alone I am happy to have it.I did find his step by step approach to developing an oledb app was very helpful, once I had gathered enoughknowledge from other sources about COM & some basic Ole db knowledge. this is a good book if you are an intermediate at com and have a basicfamiliarity with oledb and of course have a good grasp of c++; it was atthat point that I found the book very helpful. But plan on reading othermaterials first to get your base understanding of com & ole db beforebenefitting from this book (and it was annoying to see comments statingthat memset was allocating memory). This book does fill a good nichethough to help you get from a base understanding of ole db to a very strongintermediate level (helped me do that anyway) and it saved me a lot of timemaking that leap that I couldn't have done without reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book on OLE DB 1.1

3-0 out of 5 stars Re-titling of old book
When I started reading this book, I thought it looked pretty good. Then I started to see goofy assertions about how the author thought C++ should be coded (which were downright wrong). It makes me mad when people assume that the way to program in C++ is the way MFC is programmed. This book perpertuates this idea.Telling people that multiple inheritance in bad has no place in this book.If the author does not understand the proper use of this C++ feature, then they should not discuss it.It is hardly pertinent to the subject in the first place.5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for the beginner
David has done us all a great service in writing this book. His clear explanations and relevant code samples speak volumes. If you've never read anything about OLE, this is the place to start.I especially liked how he shows the pure OLE way to do things and then compares that with using MFC to do the same thing. He also points out many of the gotcha's when using MFC.His writing style is clear and his sense of humour is entertaining. All I can say is get it.It's definitely worth it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book for who want to enter OLE/ActiveX world
