5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
This book covers all the objectives of SCJP 5.0 and moreover in an excellent manner. What I liked most is that this book makes you well aware of what exactly is in the exam and what is not. For instance, the exam objectives include classes like String, DateFormat, File and so on. These classes contain a lot of methods. This book will tell you which you need to know for the exam. This saves a lot of time and effort. To conclude - don't think just buy it and success will follow!!! I passed my SCJP 5.0 with 93%.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good for those with experience
I used this book to help me pass the exam the first time. The book gives you a lot of helpful tips to write the test. The practice exams are really good. Each topic was covered fairly thoroughly in both tests. The book is definitely worth the money. Even though the book does go over the fundamentals, I don't think the book covers the fundamentals (OO design, Java Basics) well enough for a novice developer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference material.
This book was all I referred to to get my certification.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic piece of work kept up to date!
The book evolved from its first edition and its definitely a mammoth task trying to keep in this edition what is relevant and what isn't but i think the authors did it :)
5-0 out of 5 stars Very detailed, but well indexed reference
Everything you wanted to know (and probably didn't care to know) about linux.
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding second edition of a computing classic
This badly needed update to the classic first edition preserves what is best about the old edition, which is the format and attention to detail, and adds the changes that have occurred to the UNIX operating system since the first edition was published back in 1992. Specifically, there are implementation samples for FreeBSD, Linus, and MAC OS X included. This edition is as the first one was, an excellent reference for anyone doing system level programming in C or C++ on the UNIX platform. It is was never intended to teach the reader the fundamentals of the UNIX environment nor to teach C/C++ programming. The author assumes a strongknowledge of both. The book begins much as the first edition did, by explaining the UNIX kernel in generic terms. It then goes on to explain the various implementations of UNIX and their specific differences. You will find chapters three through ten largely unchanged from the first edition, as the basic mechanisms of file I/O, directory structure, interprocess control, and signaling have not evolved since that time. Chapters eleven and twelve are two new added chapters on threads, asthreading has become very important in UNIX system programming. Also, gone is the chapter on interfacing to a postscript printer. It is replaced by a more modern chapter on communicating with a network printer. The HTTP protocol is discussed in this context. The book contains a rich set of examples and downloadable code that is very useful. In addition, the book contains the implementations of two large-scale projects: a database library and communication with a network printer. Each project includes complete code with schematics. This book also contains numerous exercises, and the solutions to some of those exercises are included in the back of the book. Since Amazon, and some reviewers, show the table of contents for the first edition but not the second, I include that here for the purpose of completeness:

4-0 out of 5 stars Credible, but I'll have to see for myself.
The Scrum principle is simple. It starts with some common observations: that projects generally succeed when someone sidesteps the formal process and gets the job done anyway, and that big teams spend more time tripping over each other than typing code. Scrum starts with the radical idea of announcing that we're going to do what we were going to anyway, then mixing in big handfuls of eXtreme Programming.
5-0 out of 5 stars Real agile development
It's very hard to part with the practices accepted for generations. Many companies talk about a new, better way of a project planning, developments' ehgagement and other agile techniques. When trying to apply these techniques, these companies immediately hit the wall of a management looking for traditional ways they've been using for life and with a success (at least, in their estimate). This book makes a Scrum approach very clear and very compelling. You can read chapters from this book to your manager (by the way, I'm a manager myself) and move him/her, step-by-step, to the better understanding how a new approach works.
5-0 out of 5 stars Common sense, immediate application.
This book, coupled with Schwaber and Beedle's other Scrum book, are a complimentary package. This book in particular? Common sense.Immediate application.

5-0 out of 5 stars Remarkably well written
This book is remarkably well written. It is wonderfully clear and precise.Topics are introduced in a logical order, with great care taken to build on previous concepts. This is a book that works well for beginners as well as for more experienced users, or as a refresher. There is enough explanation so that someone can grasp a new concept, and yet the explanation is sufficiently concise so that it doesn't slow down someone who already has some Unix/Linux skills and is simply reviewing. The book excels in every respect:chapter organization, sub-topic organization, and clear typographical conventions. But the biggest strength of the book is simply the clarity of the writing.

5-0 out of 5 stars informative view.
Very good book for the money. All commands are demistified and defined. Bash and C shells are discussed and demistified. This is a great book for anyone trying to learn LINUX.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book, It complements nicely DVD course
It is great book no questions here. I was listening to another reviewer's advice and paired it with "UNIX Essentials and UNIX Core" DVD and this thing works! The book elaborates on many subjects and the DVD gives the whole variety of prospectives on Linux and UNIX. I also liked the clear organization of this book. It takes one glance in the list to figure out what do you need and how to get it. It also helps to see how many things maybe accomplished by variety of ways to avoid mishaps. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for Linux kernel basics
This book presents the kernel basics in a lucid language with the necessary details, that both newbies and experienced kernel programmers can grasp. My favorite section is the one about the new 2.6 scheduler. A chapter on the open source community is also included towards the end.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good help if you try to understand the Linux Kernel
This book describe how kernel works and how was designed, it do not shows lines of code just shows you the way you have to write code into the kernel, I think is helpful if you try to undertand or write Linux Kernel code.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well written, but out of date
This book covers the linux 2.6 kernel, but does not apply to 2.6.15 (current kernel).Data structures for working with files have changed for example. If this book gets updated, it would be quite helpful. Its still a great starting place, but be prepaired to go through include files in the linux kernel source quite a bit.Since Linus lost the change logs for the kernel, its hard to compare notes on older kernels.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good resource that is missing information
While the content that is coveredin the book is covered in very good detail there are gaps between what is tested on (based on the Measure Up practice tests on the compainion CD) and what is covered in the book. This book does not adequately cover IIS (no mentions of virtual directories for example), does not cover CHAP, MS-CHAP, EAP security. Very important details on how to use Sysprep need to be added (How to add additional drivers to sysprep images, building a single image for use on varied hardware).
5-0 out of 5 stars In depth and easy to read
This book is excellent. While I am pretty well versed in XP, this book is filling in the blanks nicely. The accompanying CD has a PDF of the book and some excellent multimedia presentation files on various subjects.
4-0 out of 5 stars Substance and Fluff
This book really does cover the most important topics in substantial detail. It's well worth the money in terms of enabling one to prepare for the exam.Just the same, it can put me to sleep like almost no other book - not because the technology is not interesting - but because it reads too much like a technical document with paragraph upon paragraph of hyper-specific, redundant detail such as: review the following questions, if you have difficulty answering them, go back and review this material until you feel comfortable with it, blah blah blah, zzz. This kind of content gets repeated in every section verbatim.Yuck!Just cut out the fat, and we would have at least a good three hundred pages less of fluff.Otherwise, well worth the money. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars good for beginners
It is a very good guide book for beginners really. I knew maybe just a little about Mac. But definitely not enough to help me go though a smooth work process. This book teaches me shortcuts and the necessary surviving skills I needed. I would recommend to other people.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Tutorial
Having switched from a PC a year ago and having suffered through 12 months with no manual, it is a relief to have it. It is written in plain English, very basic intro to Tiger OS X and should absolutely have been provided to customers free with the computer. Apple is too cute in assuming everyone, of course, is intuitive about "getting" its system. If you've spent much time in PC land it is a huge transition. This book is great because it assumes no knowledge and provides basic definitions. I also bought another "Missing Manual" for iPhoto and that was helpful, as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have resource for Mac users
When the Help Menu can't, and you're stuck for an answer, Pogue's Missing Manual is always there with an answer. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb instructional book for my needs
I bought this book for two reasons (a) I needed an overview of IP and (b) I wanted to examine different pattern analysis algorithms with a practical twist. On both counts, as an non-IP researcher, I was very satisfied. The book is very well laid out, so well in fact that it would put to shame many of its rivals. It served my needs.I can't comment on whether it will meet the needs of a broader community.I would certainly recommend it based on my experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical and Useful
This book educates the reader in image processing and MATLAB.While I am experienced in both, I found the book to be an extrememly useful reference book for projects involving image compression and image representation. The book offered practical descriptions and useful code for computing the fast wavelet transform. It was especially useful in describing how the edges should treated. This is a big issue that other textbooks gloss over.I had never seen it described in a textbook, and it was described so well.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best of its kind.
If you want to get up to speed on Matlab and plan to use it for image processing, this book is a must.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Exchange 2003
I like this book because it is easy to read and it is clear. Of course, you will enjoy better this book with prior exchange experience or training. Microsoft has done a great job on their Exchange 2003 class. Combine the two and you will get a good start on Exchange installation, maintenance, and architecture.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best exchange book I ever bought.Possibly best computer book.I can't say enough.
This book basically has every answer to every question you've had about exchange. It also has tons of scripts with detailed explanations on the cd, as well as .vsd templates for troubleshooting, upgrade senario docs, and tons of other useful material.I've been consulting for 5+ years, mcsex2, etc.As far as windows, or exchange books from ANY publisher, its the best i've ever read, or even heard about.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Only MS Exchange 2003 Book you need
This book is packed with everything you need to know about Exchange 2003 to attain a very advanced understanding of the product. It includes information on designing the environment, managing, opimizing and troubleshooting (including disaster recovery planning and methods). It has all of the material you need to know to pass exams 070-284 and 285 for MCSA/E: Messaging credential, so you don't need to buy any other books! The CD ROM has the ebook format plus tools and resources that you can use on the job.I have around 60 MS Press books in my library, and this is easilly one of the very best written as well as more useful. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Are You Ready for .NET 3.0 Yet?
Just as I was beginning to get a bit of a handle on .NET Version 2.0, along comes .NET 3.0 as part of the new Windows Vista operating system. To be sure, you can run it on XP with SP2 installed after you have installed .NET Framework 3.0. The book presumes that you have experience with .NET 2.0 and with C#. If you do not, the author recommends you read some of his earlier books.
5-0 out of 5 stars The long awaited Programming Windows, 6th Edition!
This book is the destined to be not only a classic but also the standard for WPF development. It's look and feel is reminiscent of his previous classic: Programming Windows. So much so, in fact, that you could call this his long awaited 6th edition.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Definitive WPF Book
I have had this book for about 2 weeks now, as Amazon delivered it to me early before the official release.I am a tech book junkie.I buy a lot of tech books. This is the best programming text I have purchased in the last couple of years.Petzold does a great job explaining WPF from both a nuts & bolts prespective and a big picture perspective.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not for the newbie!
Definitely not for the newbie. This is for the seasoned access programmers.I you are new to programming (at least in access) and are looking for a book on how to program with access, this is not for you. This is a great book for those seasoned programmers who are looking to make their applications better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Solid, useful book for development of Access Applications.
Easy to read first few chapters with basic design info, remainder of the book focuses on complete applications that can serve as a template/best practice for almost any other MS Access application.
5-0 out of 5 stars I've learned much in the first 3 chapters
As a self-taught Access developer for the past eight years, I have an extensive library of books dealing with beginneing to advanced areas of Access. I bought this book to add to my library, figuring it to be another reference item. However, in a casual browsing of the content, I discovered this book has much more to offer. I was pleasantly surprised to see information on levels of magnitude for linked tables, never having known that the number of sub folders for linked tables can affect the speed of reading from them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Deke - PhotoShop - McClelland
I am sure there are other books that might be easier to follow and that might offer more than this one for learning all of what PhotoShop has to offer, but I just have not found them yet. Light to read with easy step by step instructions for the beginner as well as the accomplished image processor.
5-0 out of 5 stars One-on-One -- it's not just another Photoshop book
Deke McClelland knows his subject very well and presents it in a clear and orderly way so new learning rests on a solid foundation. The format works: read the lesson, watch the DVD-ROM video lesson, do the exercises, take the quiz at the end of the chapter. Each lesson is designed to be understandable by those without much Photoshop experience and still include a few techniques that even experienced users probably don't know. And he does it all with good humor. Work files and video lessons are all included on the DVD-ROM in the book, which is bound so it lies open and flat on the desk without any hassle.
5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect jumpstart for Photoshop newbies
This was the jumpstart I needed to learning photoshop. This is not so much a tutorial as it is a get-up and start-using photoshop one-on-one session, exactly as the title suggests. So instead of learning the interface in text-book procedural fashion, it's kind of like apprenticing for the author Deke (who also wrote the photoshop bible book).BTW, the author is notably an Master at photoshop, as is apparent when he tells you "nobody uses this command, you can do that function with this new command here".There's a lot to be distracted in photoshop, hundreds and hundreds of different functions, and it turns out that many of these functions are obsolete and only left-in to satisfy old users, so having Deke point these things out is fantastic.Eg, unsharpen mask, obsolete.smart sharpen, da-shizzle.

While "Operating Systems" is not exactly the sexiest subject in Computer Science, it ought to be possible to make it interesting, for example by taking a historical or problem solving approach.
4-0 out of 5 stars its a text book
Its a text book a book you have to buy too pass class. Its a lot better than stallings book though. For most topics its pretty good explaining, with decent examples. And its a lot better than stallings OS book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good intro to Ubuntu the Linux Distro, GREAT intro to community
I received 3 Ubuntu titles and thought it might be useful to compare them.Ubuntu is a fairly recent Linux distribution that strives to be usable out of the box, with strong support. It has deep pockets and a thriving community behind it.I admire a lot of the design choices that went into Ubuntu, such as limiting the use of the all-powerful root account, which can get people into trouble. The bare-bones server install is the cleanest Linux server I've seen - *no* open ports, minimal services.Just enough to log in at a console and then install what you want.On the other hand, if you want a LAMP server (Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP - the most popular combination on the internet), that's a one button install!Brilliant!
5-0 out of 5 stars If Ubuntu sounds good, then this book is for you.
The Official Ubuntu Book, brought to you by a number of folks who actively write or document Ubuntu and is a great book for those looking to move from OSX or Windows to Ubuntu. If you're a novice or intermediate Ubuntu user then this book is for you. If you consider yourself an expert, you can still pick up a few things but most of what you'll find here, you'll already know.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book- so stop apologizing!
This is a great place to start for anyone considering making the move to Ubuntu and open source software. Thr first chapter gives a quick recap of the what exactly "open source" software means including F/OSS, Free Open Source Software, and a bit of background on the Ubuntu project itself. Some might skip that chapter but since that was exactly some of the info I was looking for, it was very helpful. . .except, "stop apolozgizing for writing such a great book!"At least three if not four times in the first chapter, the phrase, "If you've made it this far. . . " or "If you are still reading this. . . " was used.Hey guys, you did a great job, no need to apologize.I mean why else would someone buy this book rather than download it for free? ;-)

5-0 out of 5 stars Dummy No More
This book is well written and well laid out. It can be used as a reference or as a learning tool for those less knowledgeable on computer stuff. I just advanced from Windows 98 and this made the leap/transition much easier and less confounding.

5-0 out of 5 stars "REAL DUMMIE" BEFORE..WITH THIS BOOK,MAKES A BEGINNER FEEL LESS LIKE A "DUMMIE"
MY FIRST COMPUTER...(DID NOT HELP THAT THE COMPUTER WAS A LEMON, AND THE COMPANY REPLACED IT)I NOT ONLY DID NOT UNDERSTAND "COMPUTER" LANGUAGE, I DID NOT EVEN KNOW HOW TO TURN IT OFF WITH OR WITHOUT POWER-BUTTON.ANY ONE WANTING TO KNOW "HOW TO" SHOULD GET THIS BOOK.LIKE IT SAYS..YOU DON'T SIT AND READ IT LIKE A NOVEL...YOU HAVE A QUESTION...YOU LOOK IT UP IN THE BOOK...NOW IF SOMEONE WOULD COME UP WITH A COMPUTER DICTIONARY FOR ALL THE TERMS ETC. USED IN "COMPUTER LANGUAGE"!!!!BUY THIS...YOU WON'T REGRET IT!

3-0 out of 5 stars Its not a teaching book.
The book for the most part is having a discussion with you about Windows XP.Offering comments or critiques. It is not a book that I would recommend for learning via book.A Few areas actually go into depth.I see it as a PowerPoint presentation discussion about basics XP and should have been sold as.It lacked detail in networking and wireless needed for many user/owner issues. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars OS Textbook
I found the book complicated but I am not a programmer. The book covers alot of concepts which I found hard to grasp. Overall the book is not bad but if you are looking for something that will teach you programming I would not recommend this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Totally Sucked
I'm taking a college course and this book really bites. Reading it just leaves me in a daze. He goes on and on about how this method won't work and that method won't work which completely covers up what we need to learn. I'm getting 98.18% in the class on term 8 of 10, but it's not due to this book. Unfortuneatley I'm stuck with the book because it's what the school uses. Find another one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
I have been able to, using just this book, read and learn about operating systems in a very thorough and painless way. The writing is straightforward and really demystifies OSs. I am a college CS student taking an OS course and this has been an invaluable asset. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good things, bad things...
Good:
4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but too much fluff...
I've been a Server OS administrator since 1991, starting with Novell 3.12. I started with OS2, Novell and then Windows NT in 1995 at the second largest retailer in the US and I've worked my way through NT 3.5 to 2003. I bought Minasi's NT 4.0 books and thought they were the greatest thing going, but I was still green and the other publishers were not up to speed. Now I own the Windows Server 2003 books Inside Out, Unleashed and Administrators Companion. I have read much of Minasi's 2003 book, but I doubt I'll buy it. I have to say that Minasi's writing style now forces serious administrators to waste a great deal of time wading through the fluff. His book is one of, if not the thickest and it's not because of the technical information. Just like his articles in magazine publications, his writing is oriented towards new or amateur administrators. I think if you have 2 of, or the 3 books I mentioned previously, you can skip Minasi's Server 2003 book. The single area where Mark has an edge over the other books is his discussion of compatibility with older, downlevel or non-MS workstation client OSes such as DOS, Mac, Workstation, etc. This same information was covered in his earlier NT 4.0 and Win2000 books, so if you have any of them, you're ok there.

5-0 out of 5 stars A response to Joaquin Menchaca from an Apple Certified Tech Coordinator
You know, there are times I despair at the treatment of Macintoshes in Windows-centric books. Obsolete information, badly written explanations of Mac technology, and general "macs can't do that" comments. I'll flip through Windows books at the store and shudder at the nonsense they spread about Macs.

1-0 out of 5 stars Great reference, Bad textbook
This is actually a very good book to read - what they cover, they cover in depth, building each concept up from elementary concepts so you can always see how they got from point A to point B.The authors present mathematical proofs of essentially every assertion (although, as is typical of "discrete math" proofs, the proofs can sometimes be a tad on the silly side as they sometimes just restate whatever they're trying to prove - blame academia). The algorithms are all presented in a language-agnostic pseudocode which highlights the essentials of the algorithm itself without burdening the reader with language idiosyncracies.Plus, if you want something more concrete, the latest edition comes with a CD-ROM including all the algorithms implemented in Java!
4-0 out of 5 stars A great reference
This book is not for the casual reader. If the contents seems confusing at times it is because there are hard problems being analyzed.Any book on algorithms that is not confusing at times is probably not discussing any interesting algorithms. While quite academic, this book is also relevant to any engineer who needs to design/optimize a non-trivial algorithm. It's also one of those books that one can open up to any random page and start reading.Sometimes when I get coders-block, this is just the thing to break me out of it.This book is heavy, expensive and well worth its weight and price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Important Book
This is an excellent book. Well written, easy to understand, precise, good problems, excellent coverage of the basics. This book can provide an excellent foundation in computer science.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely superb
I am a huge ADO.NET nut and David's first book was absolutely priceless. After his last book, he set a very high bar that was going to be hard to meet, yet that's exactly what he did.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not as good as his former book
I was just a tad bit disappointed because his former book was so helpful to me. Still a lot of users who develop windows form applications use Access, but I see the big push to make everything SQL server. Though I like SQL Server, but in most small apps for what I do it is highly unnecessary.
5-0 out of 5 stars Accessing a Database from the .NET Environment
This book is intended for people writing data access code in a Microsoft .NET application.ADO (Active Data Object) .NET is a set of libraries within the Microsoft .NET framework that helps you to communicate with various data sources from .NET applications.
