5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Reference Source
As we have all come to expect from Robin Williams, this book is written in a clear, precise manor. The illustrations are all very helpful.I particularly like the way the windows of each application are illustrated with details about each item within the window.
5-0 out of 5 stars Cool Mac Apps
Book is very informative, easy to understand and use. I bought this book for school (I don't own a mac), but there were many things I learned about iTunes (only non Mac program I use) I wouldn't have known without reading this book. Definitely would recommend for anyone wanting to get the most out of their Mac.

5-0 out of 5 stars Offers some nifty short-cuts, tricks, and customized set-ups
John Tollett and Robin Williams' Cool Mac APPs: A Guide To iLife 05, .Mac And More may sound familiar: it's in its second edition now, and continues to back Williams' Little Mac Book by offering detailed explanations and tutorials of the main applications Mac OS X installs on your computer. From iLife applications to setting up files for Internet storage and sharing or synchronizing calendars and contact info with a PDA, COOL MAC APPS offers some nifty short-cuts, tricks, and customized set-ups.

4-0 out of 5 stars For the beginner a great start
Like all of the Visual Quickstart Guides, this book is peppered with hundreds of screen shots and tips. This easily accessible, step-by-step guide will take you from absolute beginner to being able to use Word very well. The book does not cover the advanced techniques available in Word, but does show you how to use the vast majority of functions and menu options. At the end of the book, you will be able to create just about any document you could think of, even if it is not always done in the most elegant way available in Word - that is to say not using the elegance of the advanced functionality of Word. But in all fairness, this book does not present itself as an advanced tutorial, but as a beginner/intermediate book and in this it does deliver every thing it promises.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference for making those fancy DVDs
After several trips to car shows with my husband, I had lots of beautiful photos sitting in iPhoto ready to print.I thought a DVD would be more useful and enjoyable for him, and tried to make a DVD project - NOT!Having already used The Missing Manual books, I promptly went out and bought this one.Great choice, as it filled in the blanks and gave me lots of ideas also.I am a photographer, not a tech person, and am pretty clueless when it comes to creating projects on the computer.
5-0 out of 5 stars Definitive guide to working with video on the Mac
I had recently started using a Mac at work, and suddenly I was put in a position to work with video on the Mac. Mr. Pogue's other books had been very helpful to me as I began to learn my way around the Mac, so I thought I would pick up this one to help me with my video work. I was very glad that I did. You see, iMovie HD has tools that help your movie look professional, but the iMovie HD help files are very tedious to go through. There is a great deal of referencing, cross-referencing, and nothing is smoothly laid out. This book is another story, as it is very well laid out with clear instructions and illustrations. It is very long, but since these applications are powerful, it would be expected that any clear explanation of them is going to require some space.
5-0 out of 5 stars Just Buy It!
Very informative AND entertaining! If you feel you are even the least bit interested in breaking into digital film making this book is fantastic. I have been using iMovie for several years now and have a camcorder. However, I thought this book might help me kick things up a notch. It certainly will. I have only gotten through the first fifty pages, but I've already learned enough justify this purchase.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good
This is an extremely comprehensive guide to drawing in Mac OS X with Quartz.I was a little disappointed in the lack of Cocoa (with objective-C) ties. You can do anything with Quartz, but sometimes it would take much less time to use the Cocoa equivalents when programming your OS X applications.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best book for beginning Quartz programmers
Quartz 2D is the primary graphics library in Mac OS X and is based on version 1.4 of Adobe PDF. It supercedes QuickDraw, which was used in earlier versions of the Mac OS. In Quartz 2D the coordinate space is an abstract concept defined by real values in 2 dimensions. Points in this space can be connected to form paths, such as straight lines, Bezier curves and so on. To create actual graphics on the display, the paths are rasterized as needed to generate the pixels at the display device's resolution. This permits the same graphics commands to yield the same output on any device using the best resolution available.
5-0 out of 5 stars Almost as good as Inside Mac
When I was learning to program the Macintosh in 1990, I turned to the Inside Macintosh series. At the time, you could pick up volumes I-III, read them cover to cover, and know everything you needed to get started programming the Macintosh. Today that's no longer possible for a number of reasons. Apple has discontinued the series, and just provides API references online. Plus any such multi-volume set covering everything you needed to know today would take up most of a bookshelf, rather than a few volumes. I think that's a shame since my favorite part of the books was always the discussion section -- the part that told you WHY you wanted to call various functions in a certain order.

5-0 out of 5 stars an excellent book for anyone who wants to learn to use applescript
this is just a great book im not sure where to begin this review. i am new to programming and i wanted to start off small and applescript seemed like just the thing. after reading tiger missing manual i decided to get this book on the recomendation of david pogue. i was not disapointed. applescript is really easy to use and this book shows you excatly how to use it(just like an missing manual book does). i highly reccomnd this and any other missing manual title to any beginner or power user. being a power user myself i definetly got my moneys worth from all these books. im currently reading iphoto 6 from david pogue and im allittle disapointed on that one its more of a "how to take pictures" than how to use iphoto. but iphoto being such an intuitive program you really don't need much to learn to use it.

2-0 out of 5 stars More like a travel guide
This is not a "manual" in any sense of the word. A manual tells you how, where, and when. This is more like a tour guide of Applescript. Sure there are scripts, but few of them make the Mac easier to use than its own OSX interface. The information is presented in such a scattered form, that it is hard to follow for very long, and therefore hard to learn. It's like trying to learn to be a chef by watching the Cooking Channel.

4-0 out of 5 stars above and beyond
When I first picked up a copy of iMovie HD 6 & iDVD 6 by Jeff Carlson, I had specific questions I needed help with. I had used iMovie and iDVD before, having taught myself through experimentation and by referring to the help menus in the programs. When version 6 came out, I had some trouble with iDVD specifically and was unable to find the answers I needed through the help menu.

5-0 out of 5 stars No other OS X server book comes close
Even with 10.4 out this is still the number one book on Mac OS X server there is. Period. Bartosh goes deep in to all areas of OS X server and provides excellent examples for you to follow. This book has saved my hide on a number of occasions and I can't wait to see what he comes up with next. If you only buy one OS X server book this is it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a "must-have" book for all level users related to Apple systems administration.
This book is organized into seven parts and one appendix: from new system installation to remote management and different kind of clients supported.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best MacOS X Server book
For those who are familiar with MacOS X and would like to learn the server-side of the equation, this book is it. Apple's documentation has been sparse and this book covers that deficiency with great aplomb. This is the best Mac OS X Server book on the market right now. Too bad O'Reilly just cancelled the Tiger version because I would have first in line for the next edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars iPhoto 5 Missing Manual
The book was as advertised, arrived in very good time and in excellent condition.

3-0 out of 5 stars Look out! This book is obsolete.
Do not buy this book unless, for some reason, you are determined to use an obsolete version of iPhoto. The newest version of iPhoto is iPhoto 6 (SIX!!!) and it is VERY different from iPhoto 5.(Sorry David, I wish your book was for iPhoto 6.I would buy it then. I do have your Mac OS X Tiger Edition, and it is GREAT!)

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful, beautifully, and worth every penny!
Picking up this book, the first thing you notice is how great is looks. It's printed in full color, with screen shots on nearly every page. I started the book expecting to jump right in to using iPhoto, but found that the entire first section of the book covers buying the right digital camera and a a guide to taking great looking pictures. I skimmed this section rather quickly as I already owned a camera and understand the basics of lighting and composing pictures. What I did read looked very useful for someone getting into photography for the first time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Start to Learn OS X Programming
This book is a great start to learn the best OS X programming technology. As a professional developer. The title says it "Learning Cocoa with Objective C".Avoid the book "Cocoa in a Nutshell" until you know Cocoa and Objective C and want a good refeerence.
3-0 out of 5 stars OK...
While this book is very detailed and has a lot of information in it about Cocoa programming, it starts off too quickly. You might be discouraged by the assumptions the author makes about how much C (and programming in general) you know. If you are experienced in computer programming, then you will find this book to be a blast and will learn objective -C in no time at all. However, if you aren't too good with programming, start off with some online tutorials or other books, as you will get lost after reading the first two chapters or so.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good book, but not the best book
A very popular book, and greatly improved in its second edition.Very example and tutorial oriented; somewhat out of date at this point, however. Helps the user learn Interface Builder, ProjectBuilder and Objective-C, too.Possibly a bit shallow to get the reader writing their own Cocoa programs from scratch, but a good introduction.Ultimately, probably not as recommended for a first purchase as Cocoa Programming by Scott Anguish or Cocoa Programming for Mac OS X by Aaron Hillegass. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide
This book is just what I was looking for.Excellent Security Guide to day to day security issues at my workplace.Information about TPC and UDP ports and their security risks have been very useful.
2-0 out of 5 stars Order a wrong edition
I saw that there is a bargain of another paperback edition on the page of 3rd edition, so I didn't recheck whether it is 3rd edition. So I end up in buying 2 books, 2nd and 3rd editions, because I need the 3rd edition for my class. It would be better to put edition number up in the page, not only paperback or library binding!

5-0 out of 5 stars A mile wide, several inches deep, great for filling in gaps
I hate to repeat the cliche, but if you can only buy one security book this year and you are a *nix geek, this should be it, hands down.As some point out, you can probably find everything in this book online, but then again you can find anything online, so why buy any books at all?I don't like giving 5 stars; this book left me no choice.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Nice Approach
The In a Snap books do not presume that you are a Dummy or an Idiot. They presume that you are a smart person, not afraid of computers, but that you need to learn how to use something new, like a piece of software on your computer. Further they assume that you want to get started without having to pour through all the 1500 pages or so in the guru level book. 4-0 out of 5 stars Finally Exposed
The basic principle behind this book is obviously to dissect Apple's Aperture image-editing...no no, workflow program. I was standoffish on buying Aperture as I am very married to Photoshop, however, as I began to shoot more digital photos I found myself with photos on various hard drives, backed up two or three times because I couldn't remember what I did or when I did it, and then there is Aperture and this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Aperture Exposed
What is Aperture? The program is Apple Computer Company's answer to a digital workflow for digital images. The program tries to recreate the days of editing slides on a light table. The program is like the professional version of iPhoto with more power. It is also designed to handle RAW images which most professional Single-Reflex-Lens (SLR) cameras can shoot.
5-0 out of 5 stars Aperture Exposed
This is one of the most easy-to-read technical manuals that I have come across. The style is engaging and light, while the content is comprehensive, up to date and surprisingly detailed. Recommended for those just starting with Aperture or those after a very good companion manual. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 1,000 pages cover basic to advanced shell programming and beyond
Mark G. Sobell and Peter Seebach's A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO UNIX FOR MAC OX S USERS is a reference the UNIX/Mac user simply must have at hand: nearly a thousand pages of reference material on everything from basic and advanced shell programming to Mac's OS X filesystem and utilities modules make this the best reference on the market for users who seek either a step-by-step tutorial or a basic browser's reference for problem-solving. Exercises to test knowledge boxed highlights of information make it easy to either refer to for at-a-glance troubleshooting or sit down and study for step-by-step methodology.

5-0 out of 5 stars From the ground up
This is the book I've been looking for. Not just 'OS X for Unix Geeks' or 'OS X in a Nutshell', I wanted more. As much as possible, in one resource. 1000+ pages signaled a big yes.

2-0 out of 5 stars If you're a very serious Mac/iPod addict, fine . . . otherwise, no.
After the first few titles, the "Hacks" series quickly deterioriated. "iPodf & iTunes Hacks" is evidence of this deterioriation. There is no content of value here unless you are seriously obsessed with your iPod and your Macintosh. Yes, Macintosh. There is virtually nothing in here for the Windows user, although Windows has better than a 95% marketshare. Get the idea that this book is intended for serious Mac zealots? The author(s) make it crystal clear with numerous uncomplimentary remarks about Windows and Windows users along the "you're dumb if you don't use a Mac" vein. So better than 95% of the market is dumb . . . The book has a 2005 copyright, so the Windows version of iTunes was available, it was just ignored.
3-0 out of 5 stars Common Hacks, Convenient Package
I flipped through this in a local bookstore recently while trying to kill some time waiting for my girlfriend.Like most hack books this book contains a collection of some simple, obvious hacks and some that are slightly more complex. Most if not all of these can probably be found by doing a few targeted searches on the web or digging through news groups but the convenience of having it all in one bound book at your fingertips is probably worth the price. This book covers hacks for Mac, Win and Linux with the bulk of the "good" hacks for Mac only thanks to AppleScripts.

5-0 out of 5 stars For the serious hacker
While most of the hacks in this book are fairly benign, some are not for the feint of heart. In true hacker form, the author dismantles not only his iPod, but his car! You say you want to connect your iPod to a Linux machine? How about installing Linux right on your iPod!

5-0 out of 5 stars iLife for controlling your Mac activities
In reviewing iLife '05, I must say I've never seen a more thorough presentation. I would recommend this book to any Mac user. The included 90 minute CD is reason enough to purchase this great CD. What you read is supplemented by pictures to further explain each topic. A valuable investment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Info for the Mac User

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great book!
It's not for someone wanting to learn OSX but for those who know OSX and want some great shortcuts. It's a great supplement for those other "how-to" books. Recommended by www.onlymacintosh.com - Enjoy!

1-0 out of 5 stars The Killer Tips aren't very killer ...
This is the only poor review I've ever given and its not because Scott Kelby wrote a poor book - he just wrote a book thats not very useful.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book rocks!
I have used a Mac since 1984 and Mac OS X since it was public beta. However, I don't always have the time to figure out all the little time saving tips on my own. I learned several tips from this book that I now use on a daily basis. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to be more productive with Panther! ... Read more

I like Lynda's personal publications best but anything bearing her title "H.O.T." is worth having.Very practical and useful.Norman Borge

5-0 out of 5 stars Stumbling to shortcuts in 3 days
Until I purchased this book, I had owned FCP4 for six months.I had learned my way around the software well enough.I felt comfortable, but not necessarily proficient. In order to improve my editing time, I went ahead and ordered this book, also with the intent of getting my Apple certification, as this is the same text used in their classes.Normally, I am the type that I will skip sections that discuss things that I'm certain I know, but I went ahead and followed every step in the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for learning FCP
When looking for a book on FCP, I just read the various reviews. Even though some others looked quite interesting, I chose this one and am glad I did. I wanted a specific type of instruction because I have some expert-level chops and ignorance at the same time.I'm new to video but am a professional recording engineer by trade. I'm fully conversant on the Mac and non-linear audio programs so I needed a book that got both completely simple (for video concepts new to me) and also provided some depth at the same time.

5-0 out of 5 stars CATCH A TIGER BY THE TAIL!!
Are you a Unix- user or programmer or a system administrator? If you are, then this book is for you! Authors Andy Lester, Chris Stone, Chuck Toporek and Jason McIntosh, have done an outstanding job of writing a book that cuts through the chaff and gives you practical details you can use every day.
5-0 out of 5 stars Provides an overview of OS X Tiger Version 10.4 and focuses on the Unix layer, covering over 300 of Tiger's Unix commands
Andy Lester, Chris Stone, Chuck Toporek and Jason McIntosh's MAC OS X Tiger In A Nutshell: A Desktop Quick Reference is also a winner: it provides an overview of OS X Tiger Version 10.4 and focuses on the Unix layer, covering over 300 of Tiger's Unix commands, reviewing basic system and network features and functions, and providing a reference chick has been tested and checked against Tiger for optimum, flawless performance.

4-0 out of 5 stars Grab some Jolt and your favorite junk food - it's Mac/Unix geek time!
"Mac OS X Tiger in a Nutshell" isn't your typical tome on "everything you need to know to use Mac OS X." If you're looking for an easy to read, richly illustrated book to curl up with on a rainy day with a cup of coffee, this isn't it. But if you're interested in the Unix underpinnings of Mac OS X, then grab a six pack of Jolt and your favorite junk food, because there's a heck of a lot of information packed into this book.
