4-0 out of 5 stars Mac OS X Tiger: Pocket Guide
This book accomplishes it's task - that is to be a quick guide to the Mac OS X. It has many tips and keyboard shortcuts. It touches on a lot of subjects, but it doesn't go into any detail; for that, you'll have to look elsewhere. I found the book easy to read and helpful. I'm keeping it in my laptop bag, right next to my macBook. But I'm also purchasing an additional book to get a more in-depth understanding of Mac OS X.

5-0 out of 5 stars IT's best friend!
This is not a beginners book. If you are looking for a book that explains how to double click or what an icon is, look elsewhere. The primary audience for this book is someone who is familiar with the Mac and wants to learn all the tips, tricks, and idiosyncricies of Tiger. This is the type of book someone working in a computer lab or at a help desk would turn to when you need a quick answer to a question. Every IT department should have a copy of this book available.
5-0 out of 5 stars A No-Nonsense Guide to Essential Features
This is the best and most portable "how-to" guide for OS X "Tiger" that I've seen. The index is most comprehensive. As a new convert from windows based platforms, I have found this guide to be a most reliable companion as I continue to explore the many intuitive features of the iMac computer. The manual covers every critical function of the system and has helped me get up and running with ease. The language is non-technical and easy to comprehend.I'm sure you will find it your most frequently used source of information regarding the Tiger operating system. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A useful reference
The strengths of this book are the tips to getting yourself out of trouble. The interesting part of this book are the interviews with the major players in the history of the MAC. Gives a chance to those people to voice their opinion of the state of the MAC.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Quite Everything You Need to Know, but Almost
There are four major parts to this book:
4-0 out of 5 stars I found it very useful
I recently had an excellent opportunity to try out this book as I made the switch from the PC to a new 15" PowerBook G4.This is the type of book that very few people probably read from cover to cover.Rather they would read it as a resource book when they are having troubles or questions. As I made the change from one OS to another I found myself going to the book eleven times. Two of those times the book didn't answer my questions. But for the most part I learned what I needed to know each time.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Check out the hyperlinking ability
The Apple DVD Studio Pro is a popular but very complex tool for authoring DVDs. This book shows why it is popular, and also offers an improvement on the Apple documentation. The program has immense ability to record audio and video and to merge these in as intricate a fashion as you desire. There is a panoply of editing functions. For such things as adding subtitles to video tracks. Or supporting several languages using the audio tracks. Or to have a multistory project.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to a tricky application
If ever Apple made an application that could use some usability work it's DVD Studio Pro. It's a comprehensive and powerful application that has a user interface that only a mother could love. That's why I found this book so critical. It's an end-to-end guide from the very basics of DVD construction through to using templates and building custom transitions. There are also pitstops along the way into building DVD games and creating easter eggs.
5-0 out of 5 stars You have to see this to believe it
This book breaks new ground for O'Reilly. I'm used to finding great technical content in their books--that's what they're famous for--but media tools like DVD Studio Pro require a more visual approach for explanation, and Marc delivers this extremely effectively.

5-0 out of 5 stars A bible !!
This book has really help me. It contains information about troubleshoting, installation, upgrade and more. Good graphics, easy to understand tables and easy to follow instructions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stupendous MacMadness Within!
Tremendous Trememndous. This book helped me upgrade my old SE-30 for use as a networked print server in my apartment. It got me set for networking 7 computers together on a LAN, including the fun ways that Macs talk with Windoze boxes and a Read Hat machine. I love this book! 5-0 out of 5 stars So good, I based a class on it!
This book covers most everything the wanna be Mac tech needs to know to be able to get into their system intelligently, without making expensive mistakes. It's not preachy or over technical from my standpoint, and it makes a great reference for when you need to tackle a problem yourself, rather than spending a lot of money for someone like me to come out and fix your computer.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible
Rather than present genuinely useful information on the various theories behind color management which can be applied to a wide variety of situations, the author of this book instead chooses to pad page after page with promotional fluff advertising a select handful of software products the reader is encouraged to purchase in order to follow along. Granted, you can't build a printer profile without a spectrophotometer of some kind, but the tone of the book is generally "go buy this and you're done" rather than "this is what needs to happen and here are a variety of ways you can choose to accomplish these goals". Apple might have invented color management, but they've let their ColorSync CMM grow horribly stagnant (and buggy) over the years, and this officially endorsed training manual reflects the company's priorities unfortunately well. Hopefully Aperture's belly flop will convince someone at Apple that people really do care about this stuff and spur someone into action, but until then, buy Bruce Fraser or Abhay Sharma's book instead.

1-0 out of 5 stars Demo applications don't work
This book has a serious flaw.It includes a demo version of ProfileMaker, which you need to use to create profiles in Lesson 4.Unfortunately, the demo version doesn't actually allow you to create profiles, so you can't complete the lesson! In other words, you really can't use this book unless you spends hundreds more on various software and hardware to actually do the color management.

3-0 out of 5 stars Title is a misnomer
This book should be titled Color Management in Adobe Applications on MacOS X. I picked up this book with the expectation of finding tips on how to print using Apple's Colorsync color management facility but most of the book simply covers printing using Adobe's color management system, which has totally different controls to Colorsync.

5-0 out of 5 stars The book on how to use Quartz right away.
Quartz is 2D graphics light-way API on Mac OS X. It is resolution and device independent. It is based on Adobe PDF imaging model. It supersedes QuickDraw as a primary drawing API on Mac.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best Practices for Mac programmers.
I thought this was a great book for Mac programmers who want to know more about Quartz. It is well written and easy to follow. There is a CD-ROM with the sample code included with the book. It covers the essentials and gives "Best Practices" advice on actually using Quartz in a professional program, including performance issues.R. Scott Thompson is a talented author and I hope he will write more programming books in the future.

1-0 out of 5 stars NOT a power user book
I purchased this book sight unseen since it was referenced as a "Power-User" book. I've used Macs for the last ten years and consider myself savy but no tech-geek or mac expert. Yet almost everythingin this book i already knew, both in terms of mac use in general and 8.5specifically. To be fair, I did find a handful of useful tips or insightinto several areas i was less familiar with, but this accounts for maybe 5%of the book. On the other hand, if you are new to Mac and/or 8.5 this bookis excellent and I would give it a 5 star rating. For power users, it getsone star for the few tidbits it offers mac savy users. The included CD,like all book CDs, strikes me as pointless since its almost always out ofdate by publication time. For its steep $50 list price, the book offerspower users little value for their money.

5-0 out of 5 stars An essential resource for MacOS 8.5 users
At first glance, I thought that this was just another of those too little too late books that seem to be all too common. Not so, this has to be the first book I have ever had on the Mac Os, that is worth the purchase price. It covers all aspects of Apple's MacOS 8.5 and is a goldmine ofinformation. The book is also loaded with information on many usefulshareware and commercial applications that enhance the Apple systemsoftware and demonstrates many useful solutions that will greatly enhanceyour Mac operationsThe section on Applescript is excellent for people whoare using or learning to use Applescript, or for those who just want tounderstand scripting in general. This book also describes connecting Macsto various PC operating systems including NT and Window 95 this sectionalone is worth the price of the book. Having used Macs and Pc's for manyyears I was pleasantly surprised by this excellent resource. A must havefor anyone using MacOS 8.5. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars don't buy this book
i don't recamend buying this book.I got it for my birthday last year and from my uncle right after i purchased my new g4.the book taught me nothing.nothing was totally new in the os and if it was, it was easy to use.therefore, all you need is common sense in this case.save your money.

3-0 out of 5 stars A handy book - especially if you are new to computers
This is a great book for people who have no idea how to use a computer. It can be a bit too simplictic at times, which is great for "dummies."Its chapter on extensions is a nice inclusion, letting you know which can go and which must remain... giving you the ability to free up precious memory. It also has a nice listing of helpful and informative Mac related web-sites in the back. 4-0 out of 5 stars Mac OS9
A friend of mine has this book."So", you ask. This book was so helpful that I must buy it for myself.I am (was) a "Windows Wizard" who finally got tired of all the system crashes.I bought anew iMac DV and needed some help getting around the Mac arena. This bookanswered 95% of my questions (the rest I just have to play).Highlyrecommended to any Mac user. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Nice book for those just starting with a new Mac.
My wife's Win 98 PC finally pissed her off so much she wanted something new and we decided on an eMac.She had never used an Apple computer and I hadn't since about 1990 so it wasn't something we approached lightly.I did the reseach and made sure that both an Apple and the eMac were the right choice for her. This book was part ofthe research. It was a solid resource for beginners but not the best book ever written. Some things were not covered as well as I would have hoped (I fit into the power user category), but it was fine enough for my wife. All in all I'd say it's a nice starter but not your only option.Regardless, definately get a Mac and if you're switching from a PC definately consider getting a good reference to hold your hand for the first few days (you'll likely never touch it after a week of use, Macs really are as good as they say).Only word of warning against this book is that it was written for Mac OS 10.2 which has been replaced by 10.3.Most of the data and how to's are the same but it isn't always as accurate as you would like when you are needing it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Marginal at best
I have read many of the for Dummies books and for the most part I have found them to be well organized with relevant information at your fingertips. Alas, this book is not one of those. The author attempts to keep things cute and lively with all sorts of little catch phrases and other humorless items (can you say bob saggett) but it really just confuses and annoys. Several times I have turned to this book searching for a quick explanation on how to do something and found it nearly impossible to find. The index and appendix are not particularly helpful and many of the descriptions give you just enough information to get into trouble. While most of the "for Dummies" series are extremely helpful, this one is not one of them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gotta have this one
This book is perfect for every Mac owner who wants guidance with the Mac's Jaguar OS. The authors keep things light, even entertaining and there's nothing missing. Check out the index pages and you'll see what I mean.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very entertaining!
I've only made it through the first 4 or 5 chapters so far, but I've found it educational and even more fun to read.I bought my first Mac in February and feel like I've been floundering a little in picking up OS X, so I found this book.I'll say that so far I've picked up quite a bit, while enjoying the authors good humor along the way.

1-0 out of 5 stars Tiger book has too much useless chatter
I tried to read this book, and can't get through all the humor. I'm looking for real meat and, but I can't seem to wade through all the chatter and jokes. I think I'll give up and resell it and find another book on Mac OS X Tiger. I buy a lot of "how to" books and and usually enjoy them, but this has to be one of the less helpful ones I've bought. I used to enjoy his 1-page magazine articles, but a whole book is too much! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Paid For Itself In One Sitdown
I was a late bloomer when it came to OS X. I don't like change for change's sake, but recently work forced my upgrade from OS 9. Well, I did it, but I didn't have to like it! It wasn't long before I started getting mauled by the Tiger. This time, however, I had no lifelines... either my own long experience or a "Sad Macs" book... of which I dog eared a couple copies over the years. When Landau recently published his Mac OS X Help Line- Tiger Edition debuted, I was pretty sure it was time to start dog earing another of his books. Well, just today in fact, I wrote "Paid In Full" on the jacket of that book! It helped me through a permissions problem that had me about to rack a round into a shotgun and put my computer to sleep the hard way. Whew, the book was lots cheaper than a G4! Landau saved the day again!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Mac Book Ever
Ted Landau is one of the most credible and thorough Mac troubleshooters ever. His MacFixit web site is the most potent tool that any Mac user can put in his arsenel. Now, you have all of his collective years of experience and know-how gathered in one place. The topics covered are almost endless, with everybody from novices to seasoned pros benefitting immensely from Ted's expertise. This boook should be included with every Mac as standard issue from Apple.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the consummate book for technicians and users alike
Help Line Tiger edition is formatted very nicely with graphics, screenshots, sidebar sections called Take note and Technically speaking. Take note explains the application being discussed and it's uses and the Technically speaking sections that get into what the application, hardware or service is doing that you don't see.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a Programmers book at all
I usually have good judgement when getting technical books.I was wrong with this one. This book will not help an existing programmer get familiar with X-Code, and won't help a novice get started. The main reason? It is full of garbage anecdote's that just distract the user and interrupt the flow of trying to learn something. The book is horrible on explaining the X-Code IDE and in explaining any Objective C or Cocoa references.Do Not waster your money.

3-0 out of 5 stars I feel ashamed for the authors and the editors.
This book has probably the most aggravating style I've ever read. HORRIBLE DORKY COMMENTS are liberally sprinkled all throughout the book. It's distracting because I'm now on the defensive for these embarrassing comments such that if I suspect an embarrassing comment is imminent, I skip ahead, hopefully not missing any relevant data. How could the editors tolerate this? Jeez, horrible, simply horrible.
1-0 out of 5 stars Lame
If I wanted comedy I'd buy comedy. I wanted a book on programming in XCode, and what I got was a bunch of lame 'jokes' interspersed with the odd bit of useful material. I can't imagine who this juvenile rubbish is aimed at. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars quick, concise
An expensive but necessary little book. There's really nothing else on the market that shows expanded views of the (deep, very deep) Shake interface. Damian Allen ought to be commended for so clearly mentioning on page 3 how the Unix-based browser and $HOME works. I couldn't find my desktop in Shake till he explained it and had nobody to ask. Thanks! Looking forward to Allen's next Pro Training volume.

3-0 out of 5 stars Cool but not OK
Shake is very full of tools and this book will help you in production line but remember this is quick-reference that some helper very shot and many picts and texts too small. Quality of print are drop in many pages, I think publisher should redesign layout of this book. ... Read more
