1-0 out of 5 stars complete disappointment
It seems that the author does not understand what someone getting this book would want. To begin editing. I am not a rank amateur, but this book made me feel like one. The process of actually beginning did not start until chapter five - (page 159) and even then you don't really have a clue what's going on. Finally in Chapter 9 (page 281) you start Basic Editing. It was too complicated, but my thought was to start with Chapter 9 and then go back and put together what I might need to know. I found this book to be a disaster. Swimming through a lot of information I would only need if I were editing Star Wars X, instead of trying to organize a documentary with six hours of interviews.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Great great complete readible and easy to understand book. It's become my BIBLE along with the FCP manuals..but it's condensed all into one book where as FCP has five. This is good for the beginner as well as the advanced user.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great guide to Final Cut Pro
I think that J. Ewing, who wrote the negative review, is on crack (metaphorically J.Ewing, not literally, chill - don't try to sue me for slander.Geez, you need to relax J. Ewing, you need to relax). This book is a definitive guide to Final Cut Pro 4 just as all of Lisa Brenneis' previous version have been for previous versions of FCP.Check out the rest of the amazing reviews for this book. Then, if you too are on crack, listen to J. Ewing. If not, buy this readable, helpful, insightful, and concise guide to FCP 4. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice addition to my OSX UNIX library
OS X UNIX is amazingly friendly and accessible. Some people who had never used it before type commands and work with the operating system directly as a "cool guys" in movies! This book is very helpful and well written and it is serves as a very nice reference on OS X server. I paired this book with that "UNIX Essentials" DVD I found here on Amazon and it is complete UNIX course recorded and this book and a video they contribute one another greatly. You improve the reading and by reading you improve what you have seen. OS X server is most advanced and easy to manage UNIX server ever. It is a culmination of all efforts for all UNIX system managing software I ever encountered.
5-0 out of 5 stars Panther Server Skillset
The manual has covered the basic setup of the entire suite of services, plus a slew of other utilities that help manage server settings. The author has done good work in organizing the book for services.I use it as reference for many server jobs.I am thankful for the concisewritten reference.

4-0 out of 5 stars A welcome addition to an OS X Server library
I've been waiting for a solid introduction to OS X Server book for some time and have long thought that the lack of such a book was a significant gap in many publishers' stables. Happily, this book filled that gap for me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Podcasting is where it's gonna be
I bought this book for a class I'm taking to obtain my degree and had no idea what podcasting was. This book is fantastic in the aspect of helping create a podcast for any size audience. It's easy to follow, easy to understand. The only fallback is that it does not offer software but it does reference a website or two where there are free downloads available.Happy Podcasting!

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy, great guide that tells you everything you need to know.
This book was so informative because it told me things that I didn't even know I had to know before producing a podcast. The authors made the book not only easy to follow but included some humor along the way. They included free websites and the best info on hardware that is needed too. At the end of every chapter is a section called "The Absolute Minimum"which gives a synopsis of the best and most necessary info of the chapter. I found that extremely helpful. This is the best book for the beginner because it explains everthing in easy to understand terms without being dry and totally technical.

4-0 out of 5 stars Makes true on Claim
The Absolute Beginner's Guide to Podcasting is a foolproof guide to making and producing your own podcast. From beginning to end the book spells out everything. From technical jargon to the pace of your podcast this book is there to help.It is easy to follow and has great page layouts that your eyes can easily focus on.In each chapter they also include small insets that give you a tidbit of history about podcasting. While podcasting's history isn't long they give great insight into subjects like the "Podfather", Adam Curry, who is seen as, the name implies, the forerunner for podcasting. This book is a beginning podcasters bible. That is the very best thing about it and possibly its only downside. It sets out to teach a novice the ways of the podcasting world and achieves that goal.If you have already tried your hand at casting and have a good idea of how it works this book wouldn't be the best choice for more advanced casting techniques. All in all the Absolute Beginners Guide to Podcasting achieves exactly what it is setting out to accomplish, giving beginners a guide to the growing world of podcasting. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Apple Pro Training that Doesn't Disappoint
DigitalFilm Tree's text, "Advanced Editing and Finishing Techniques in Final Cut Pro HD", is part of the Apple Pro Training Series--the curriculum for professionals studying to become an Apple Certified Pro.And that makes perfect sense, since the book mimics Apple's famous dedication to user-friendliness.The text is clear and concise, and the pages are filled with full color photos that mirror your computer screen. In fact, the learning process glides so seamlessly that the advanced techniques you learn feel like kid stuff.
5-0 out of 5 stars By and For Professionals
Note the words in the title Advanced Editing. This is a book written by professional video editors for professionals or at least advanced amateurs. This is actually the same as the book Advanced Editing and Finishing Techniques in Final Cut Pro 4. If you purchased the earlier book, you don't need this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good 'shop manual' for OS X Panther
Many years ago I bought a second hand Ford Cortina in dubious condition. I kept it running with the assistance of a marvelous volume purchased at a specialist bookstore that was referred to as "the shop manual." It wasn't much help teaching you how to drive or how to park but if you needed to know how to perform an oil change, flush the radiator or bleed the brakes it told you all the details. Now James Duncan Davidson has given me a shop manual for Macintosh OS X Panther.
2-0 out of 5 stars don't quite see where it fits
This book is supposed to fall in some middle ground between a Mac OSX manual (Like Pogue's Missing Manual on OSX) and the hard core extreme Mac-OSX-as-another-Unix-system (as typified in Mac OSX Unleashed or the OSX Nutshell handbook or the under-rated Unx for Mac OSX by Enzer). However, I think it just ends up neither fish nor fowl. Not really a Mac OSX manual because it is much too short for that, and not nearly as detailed as other books that get into much more depth on the Unix aspects of OSX. I would suggest getting the OSX Missing Manual (or Robin Williams OSX book) and then supplementing that with Enzer's book or Mac OSX unleashed.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for geeks, good for future geeks
This book is not for geeks. If you are already someone who understands Mac OS X inside and out, uses the terminal to accomplish things periodically, and know how to get things done you will find this book to have no new information. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars From knowing nothing to creating good layout
My only layout experience prior to getting inDesign was MS Publisher. This book got me up and running and quickly understanding this significantly more advanced software. I found most of the videos not very relevant, except for one or two chapters where the video covered a topic more thoroughly than the book did (example: pencil tool). Even though I would recommend this book to someone learning inDesign CS2, I have two negative comments I'd mention to them first:
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent learning resource
My only complaint - and it's very small - is the author's assumption that a certain set of fonts is "always" installed with InDesign. Apparently, that "always" doesn't necessarily apply if you happen to purchase the educational version. While that's fine for now - I don't necessarily need huge piles of additional fonts - it makes the lessons a bit frustrating because they tend to rely on the fonts. For example, in teaching kerning and tracking, the author assumes that you've opened a file set in a particular font, which will yield very specific results on-screen - which you'll have some difficulty reproducing if you don't happen to have those fonts installed.
4-0 out of 5 stars A very useful tutorial and reference
If you want to quickly get up to speed with Adobe InDesign, look no further! The introductory video segues with the lessons seamlessly. The lessons themselves are thorough, and each step is clearly presented, making it simple for a new user to follow.

Editorial Review

The stable, adaptable Unix underpinnings of Mac OS X surely have contributed to the operating system's fantastic success in the market. The trouble for the Mac loyal, though, is that nothing could be further removed from the friendly Mac user interface than the Unix shell environment. There's a learning curve to be surmounted by Mac users who want to get the most out of their new System, and that's where Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It makes very nice first OS X UNIX book
OS X UNIX is amazingly friendly and accessible. Some people who had never used it before type commands and work with the operating system directly as a "cool guys" in movies! This book is very helpful and well written and it is serves as a very nice reference. I have followed advice in someone's review andpaired this book with that "UNIX Essentials" DVD I found here on Amazon and it is complete UNIX course recorded. This book and a video they contribute one another greatly. The book is very particular about the subjects that related to OS X and because there are some differences between OS X and other UNIXes it is nice to have a book that deals with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars very nice OS X book, good way to get involved with UNIX.
It is never too easy to study UNIX . It takes much of effort to go through all of the details, often unnecessary, to grasp the core subject. This book deals with the most difficult stage of getting into UNIX: the beginning.

4-0 out of 5 stars A solid OS X book
Here's the thing about book reviews: They're a lot easier to write when you either absolutely hated or absolutely adored the book in question. Once you've decided how you feel about it, it's easy to find a dozen examples of its mediocrity or excellence, as the case may be. However, I've been sitting on this particular review for a few weeks now, unable to finish it because I can't say that I feel very strongly at all about Power Tools. I recently decided, however, that being unable to form a definite opinion of it one way or another is itself a kind of opinion. There's nothing glaringly wrong with it or missing from it, but when it comes down to whether I'd choose to buy it over a different Mac book, I can't say that I would. I realize that this isn't a work of fiction - its goal isn't exactly to suck me in with thrilling plot twists so that I read the whole thing cover to cover in one sitting. Nevertheless, there are some other books out there that do exactly that (I'll get to them later), and I think I've been spoiled by reading them.5-0 out of 5 stars My choice after substanative review
I needed a book to better understand key elements of OS X such as permissions, the Samba server (connection to Windows). Went to a big technical bookstore to persue all the titles available. This was the only book to provide the key underlying information about how/why the operating system works. 5-0 out of 5 stars The best OS X book I've read!
I love this book because it's really different from other OS X books I've read. It provides tons of great tips and tricks, but it really does make you understand the big picture, too--the reasons why you can or should do something. The book's contents are presented in a well thought-out order, and it is written very clearly--no guessing about what the author means. No confusing or ambiguous steps, which is especially important for the more advanced topics. My Mac is working better than ever after reading this book and I feel like I have the kind of advanced understanding of OS X that I didn't get from other books. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I'm a long time Mac user and have been using iPhoto since it came out. This book really hits every aspect of the program, and tells not only what's there, but how and why to use it. Examples are concise and relevant. This book is a good book for an advanced iPhoto user, and a must have for the beginner. Apple should include a copy of this book with every Mac.

3-0 out of 5 stars Certainly helped, but don't really have any use for 80% of the material
I would reccommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about using special fx, filters, motion, compositing, titles, or "sound track" in final cut pro, but to those who'd rather do all of this in after effects and would like to know more about codecs, HD, workflow, audio mastering, encoding, compressing, formats, and delivery in Final Cut Pro, I'd have to guess that there's probably something better out there. It would be unfair to say that this book ignores these subjects, but it certainly does not concentrate on them.I'm not dissappointed in my purchase for I certainly learned a lot, but I did expect a bit more.Good for what it's worth, but not great.

5-0 out of 5 stars The answer to every question, "it's in there!"
I'm sold on the Apple's Pro Training series for Final Cut Pro. Final Cut Pro 4 and Final Cut Pro Advanced, offer training very economically. If you work independently and learn well from text books, these two offer clear instructions that can be trusted and followed with confidence. By following them carefully, I accomplish complicated tasks, such as animating titles, easily. Although, there are a few misplaced characters there aren't any missing words. By following Apple's lesson plan, I learned how to use tools in FCP. Some of them are so clever they're difficult to comprehend. The slip edit tool, for instance, lets you change which portion of the source file will be shown in a clip without lengthening the sequence. It took awhile before I could understood what was going on. It wasn't like anting I'd encountered before. How to operate the levers, buttons, and bells is important but these two books also teach how to make movies. For example, Final Cut Pro 4 describes how to slip the video into synch with the audio tracks rhythm pattern: how to finesse the leopard to move his head at a specific time in the music. After completing many tutorials in these books, I appreciate documentaries more. I've heard it referred to as a mid-range video editor but I can't foresee needing more power to edit my DV. At first I wondered why LiveType came bundled with Final Cut and why it took up so much room on my hd. After building the example projects, in chapters 19 and 20 of Final Cut Pro Advanced, however, I don't care how much room it needs. My motion titles impressed everyone saw them. Even experienced FinalCut Pro users may learn something about LiveType by reading this book. These books cover color correction, working with film, project management, nesting sequences, multi-track trims -- I'm reminded of the jingle about a good spaghetti sauce, the answer to every question, 'it's in there! I'll be using these two books, Final Cut Pro 4 and Final Cut Pro Advanced, for a long time. Tip: The lessons will go smoother if you read ahead.
2-0 out of 5 stars Problematic...
I found several mistakes in the book.In one chapter it is recommends that you apply the 3 way color correction filter, when in fact you needed to use the normal color correction filter.I was able to figure out what was actually intended, but it baffles me why Apple as well as Peachpit Press would put out a book like this without a quality assurance check. This was not the only issue with the lessons. In my copy, on lesson 21 it asks you to modify the auxillary 24fps timecode of a clip, but I was unable to do so with the file that was included in the DVD.Read more

I've read a number of books on wireless security. None have made it as plain and simple as this one. Even though the title says AirPort the text covers any wireless router. The illustrations and screenshots are focused on the Mac AirPort and AirPort Express hardware, but the basics remain the same. 2-0 out of 5 stars Frustratingly verbose
Chambers seems to cover the required material for Mac OS 10.3 OK, but he could have said it in less than half of the 692 pages if he kept his all-to-frequent attempts to be entertaining out of the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best on the shelf
As a former PC owner who switched, I think I would have popped a gasket if I had not picked up this great book. It answered questions with answers I could not find in the Help file and a copy of the Mac OS X Missing Manual, and over a really wide area, taking in iMovie, connecting to PC networks, limiting the stuff my friends could do on their accounts, printing things in iPhoto, setting up my Mac to turn on and off all by itself and how to burn songs with iTunes. People tell you that Macs are easy to set up but anyone who has suffered with iDisk will argue with them; this book solved my problems and got things running!! 1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Bother
If you've used a Mac for more than six months you probably already know 90% of what's in this so called "Desk Reference".Taking just one chapter (Jamming with iTunes and iPod) as an example:Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A Hasty Job
I have found more faulty references in this book than helpful ones.I'll cite just one example. I wanted to find out more about the "Find" function in Panther, in particular about how to extract the location of the "found" file when I'm looking at a trail of unnamed "folder" icons. The index sent me to page 82 (the only reference to "Find").The information there was a tiny paragraph languishing under the heading "Desktop Madness."It said, "Use the Files->Find command when you can't remember where you put it in a file or folder." (sic). Then the second and last sentence: "This command is a Mac OS X feature that really kicks some butt. I discuss it in detail in chaper 12." Guess what?Chapter 12 is called "The Fail-Safe Guideto Printing."No more references to "Find."You know whose butt I'd like to kick. Enough said.

1-0 out of 5 stars Avoid this book
After being spoiled by Dummies books by David Pogue, it came as a surprise that this is 0ne is not for beginners or even those coming from OS9. Terms are used that are not defined, there are misleading illustrations, and totally confusing directions. If you already know OSX this may be of some help but don't start withthis.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty clear and a quick read
I bought this while waiting for my first ever Mac to arrive, so I suppose it's a credit to Levitus that I felt relatively confident about using it pretty much straight away. The book covers relatively basic topics like the Finder, saving files, navigation, file management etc. As a lifelong Windows user, it all seems pretty familiar stuff.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An interesting read on a cultural phenom.
I recently purchased an ipod and before I received it, I wanted to read up on it.I was looking more for a how-to book, which this isn't.This book instead is a very interesting read on the beginning of the ipod to the impact on society the ipod has had.The book is well written, with interesting facts and great color photos.I would highly recommend this book to any ipod owner or future owner.I did not buy this book, rather I rented it from the public library.

3-0 out of 5 stars An artifact of its own subject
I had checked out Mr. Kahney's book hoping to find some objective insight into what has become the news media's technological darling. But objectivity is nullified when a disclaimer such as the following appears on the publication page: "Rather than use a trademark symbol with every occurrence of a trademarked name, we are using the names only in an editorial fashion and **to the benefit of the trademark owner**, with no intention of infringement of the trademark" (emphasis added). This lack of objectivity is further evidenced by the last line of the first paragraph: "Inside Apple's little white box is magic, pure magic, in the guise of music." To paraphrase The Lovin' Spoonful, if you believe in magic then this book's for you.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very interesting, very aesthetic, and very detailed.
I found this book as I was researching the product development history of the iPod for a class. This book did a fantastic job analyzing how this business concept went from idea to prototype to market (and, of course, beyond). If you are interested in the beginnings of where this product started, and where it has gone, I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mac OS X Power Tools, 2nd Edition
Being familiar with the author's expertise on the subject I found familiar ground, he answered my questions (even a few questions that I didn't know I had) in a way that was understandable and within the realm of my possibility. I would reccomemd the book to all that are not that versed in the new operating system. There are many books on the market and this is my recomendation, you will find yourself referring, and finding, the information it holds. Go buy it!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Comment from the author
As the author of Mac OS X Power Tools, I'd like to make a quick comment, as I feel that M. Christianson's "review" misrepresents this book. As I've tried to make clear in the introduction to the book, it is written for the typical beginner to advanced beginner who is looking to become more of a power user. It covers the necessary basics and then goes well beyond them to help readers truly understand the inner workings of Mac OS X and how to best take advantage of its power and flexibility. However, if you're searching for advanced information on SSH tunneling, key generation, RSA authorization, and similar IT-level topics, this isn't the book for you. Instead, I highly recommend Mac OS X Unleashed by Ray and Ray, an excellent and exhaustive book that covers many of the advanced Unix underpinnings of Mac OS X.

2-0 out of 5 stars Hardly "Power"-anything
Unfortunately, this book contains large amounts of tedious information and is far too shallow to be called "Power"-anything.Perhaps it was silly of me to expect this book to "go beyond the basics" as was claimed.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best!
This is the best InDesign book out! Sandee knows this program inside and out! She explains it clearly, quick and concise! I recommend this to every desinger I know. I have a copy at work, and keep a copy for home use too!
5-0 out of 5 stars Inexpensive, comprehensive, and easy to navigate and reference,
I've only bought a few computer manuals in my life [and never ended doing much with them but setting them on a shelf] before this, so perhaps I am not the best person to review one.Furthermore, I have never used a desktop publisher program of any kind (beyond WORD) before picking this book up - so I am about as clueless going into this as I can be. But, I had to learn In Design (along with Adobe Photoshop and Acrobat) fast. A design instructor recommended this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Organized for Users
With several InDesign texts close at hand, this is the one I find myself reaching for first. Cohen has an approachable style and the material is logically organized. The linkage of virtually every section of text to one or more illustrations gives the reader "two kicks at every can." Her VQG for CS2 InDesign will be my first purchase after upgrading. ...
