3-0 out of 5 stars Slackware is a great learning distribution!
I was introduced to Linux back in 1995 and the distro was Slackware. It was tough going back in those days, had to set up everything manually. I learned to love Linux and several of the distros that followed (Redhat, Suse, Caldera, etc) but I've always kept Slackware as my workhorse distro. If you have a question about Linux, ask a Slackware user.
3-0 out of 5 stars New?
W. Boudville's review is a little confusing. He seems to imply that Slackware is new. This is simply not correct. Page two of this very book states, "Slackware, started by Patrick Volkerding in late 1992, and initially released to the world on July 17, 1993, was the first Linux distribution to achieve widespread use."
3-0 out of 5 stars why Slackware?
Yes, Slackware has differences with other linuxes like Fedora or SUSE. But these are minor. If you want a generic introduction to the essentials of linux, then this book will do you. It's perfectly adequate for that task.

1-0 out of 5 stars This Book Almost Defines 'Poor Quality'
First I'd like to say this book has an unbelievable number of mistakes and inconsistencies throughout it, in fact, I believe this book was based on a previous version of slackware Linux and quickly (and poorly) renamed and rewritten for the current version.1-0 out of 5 stars A terrible book
This book was obviously thrown together to make a buck. It is disorganized and badly written, and contains gems like the entire listing from a 'make install'. No one edited this thing; I don't think anyone even proofread it. The publisher should be ashamed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Slackware 7.0 is old

5-0 out of 5 stars A good Linux "How to" book.
A great book giving the hands on, step by step process on how to set up a Linux Internet Server. Includes all the information the other books don't -- like the actual wire from the server to the internet, dealing with your ISP & other important facts. The book is a good one source reference that really covers EVERYTHING, to some degree. Many good tips about getting additional information for topics not covered in detail by the book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good book
the "...for dummies" boods always help me out on stuff I dont konw that much on.

3-0 out of 5 stars The author forgot about Murphy's law
While SLfD is easy to follow when you have all the popular devices and cards, it doesn't leave room to explain how to overcome problems during installation. Ie, devices (printers) or cards (sound) not being recognized. There is a page or 2 in the back that says where to check the compatibility lists.By then is way too late, you've either given up or did some research, fixed the problem yourself.5-0 out of 5 stars Got me through my first Linux setup!
This book did an excellent job of getting me through the setup process successfully and teaching me something in the process.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Got me going...
I started my server with this book and the man pages that it suggested helped a little. It does not have the heavier network admin information that you need once you get running. If you are trying to configure multiple nic's, sendmail, web hosting or any of the standard things, you need to get something else. But if you want to set up a basic network, this is the best starter book i have used.

3-0 out of 5 stars Definitely for the beginner
This book was very easy to follow, but I didn't learn very much that wasn't already available in the Linux documentation.1-0 out of 5 stars Only the obvious copied and pasted
This book I found rather disappointing. It is DEFINITELY for the beginner. So much that most information is nearly copied from all the help information provided during the installation process itself.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Too old and not enough guidance
If you're looking for a guide to Linux and a distribution that will work on an older computer with very little hard drive space, and only need to play around with it and not do anything terribly useful, then this may be the book for you.Otherwise, I suggest you look elsewhere.4-0 out of 5 stars Covers exactly what it says it does
This book covers exactly what its name says it does.It is an in-depth tutorial and discussion of configuration and installation concerns with regard to the Slackware Linux operating system.Period.It doesn't covercommands or the X Window system to any great extent, but then again, itnever claims to do so.It does provide a thorough examination of Linuxinstallation. After reading this book (OK, after reading the first coupleof chapters), I was able to install Linux with no problems on my home PC. I am still looking for a good command reference manual so that I'll be ableto become proficient with this operating system. All in all, this is agreat book as far as it goes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Execellent Resource and Tutorial ;)
I read this book from cover to cover and am still using it as a guide for building my new linux friendly computer. The depth it goes into on setting up Xfree86 and the touching on shell programming is awesome. The cd's werealso a lifesaver and a resource to get software without searching all overthe net. Id reccommend this book to any linux newbie. ... Read more

Editorial Review

This Brobdignagian tome has all the usual information on what Slackware Linux is and how to install it, but it also has good tutorials on bash, pdksh, tcsh, vi, emacs, joe, groff, TeX, shell programming, and a bunch of other utilities. In terms of graphical interfaces, Parker and his associates cover XFree86, Motif, OPEN LOOK, and OpenWindows.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars its Slack -- not much else to say
Actually ... this one had a bit of disappointment going into all the gui / motif programming; but that's partially due to the year it was printed ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Slackware Linux Released: Very Comprehensive
Slackware Linux Release is a very comprehensive book covering much of the topic.I thought it was an exceptional book!I successfully installed in an older X386 33MHz machine.Initial install isn't exactly automatic butis manageable for one with reasonable computer skills.Book not onlycovers basics but is also good for intermediate use and as a general UNIXreference.Browsing through other books on the topic, I would stronglyrecommend this book as well as the Slackware distribution of Linux thatcomes with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good book I think the best part is it's for everyone
Slackware is a great os and this book shows you how you will make Slackwarerun at peak preformance and show to you that the worlds highest price and most baught virus win 9* is such a piece of crap. Buy this booknow you will not be sorry you did.Power to the Penguin The_Phreaker ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars The Need for comprehensive SLACKware Software, on Disk|!
I found this book VERY informative in the actual installlation process of Linux --- 3-0 out of 5 stars This book is for professional developer.
I expected this book to have some content related to scripting languanges such as Perl butunfortunately it doesn't. It is mainly dealing with creating and connecting database using C++ or Java which is definately toolfor professional developers. It would be nicer if it coveredthe databaseconnection using Perl or someother scripting language which is a mucheasier way to do the CGI work. Also, it only covers mSQL.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST Database Book on Linux!
This book brings you 90% of what you need to develop a database solution on Linux.Read more
