5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for just about any level programmer looking to do ASP.NET the right way
I'd like to give Marco a personal thank you for writing the lastest book with the beer house sample. I have learned quite a lot, compared to other .net books. The concepts in this book work quite a bit better than the standard asp.net 2.0 books, where they discuss everything ASP.NET capable of, but give no real world implementation or design pattern. I have purchased 7 books on asp.net 2.0 alone, and wasted quite a bit of time reading through them. This book has given me more concrete knowledge and help building real applications for businesses than I ever could have found in the others.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This is a fantastic book. The layout of each chapter and the book in it's entirety is exceptional. It doesn't go into too much details about specific content but rather gives the reader a greater appreciation for the website development process.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent - Puts it all together
This book presents by far the best sample site/case study available for ASP.NET 2.0.Most/all of the primary ASP.NET 2.0 features are utilized.Unlike with the minimalist Microsoft sample apps, design alternatives and decisions are thoroughly explained.

5-0 out of 5 stars ASP.NET Unleashed
You will learn more about ASP.NET in the first few chapters of this book than what other authors take a whole book to explain! You should also be familiar with programming prior to reading this book. This book will be hard for a beginner to follow. Some VB.NET programming is a prerequisite.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
This book teaches concepts in a very effective manner: making exercises in every one of them. The "how-to" approach, for me, is a very effective method to learn.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Asp.net 2.0 Book For Everyone
I read through "Beginning Asp.net 2.0" and "Professional Asp.net 2.0" (both good books), so I was hesitating if I needed another Asp.net 2.0 book. Boy am I glad I bought this book too. This is excellent well-rounded book that has very specific and valuable information. I've already read through 1/2 of this book just as an overview and I've already learned new things. I also found this book to be an excellent reference to answer my random questions. If you are an Asp.net 2.0 programmer I highly recommend you getting this book. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Errors and omissions
The discussion on how to use the new SqlCacheDependency class is wrong. The book claimed (in page 623) that "with SQL Server 2005 no setup work is needed and no external objects must be added to the Database.". In reality, you need to setup several permissions in the database side. In addition, you have to make sure that the compatibility level of your database is set to 90.
5-0 out of 5 stars Does what it says on the cover
This book is an excellent introduction to the facilitites available in ASP.NET 2.0. It covers simple topics such as HTML controls, WebControls, page lifecycle etc, and also goes a little deeper to discuss details of providers, personalisation & master pages to name but a few. There are also several chapters devoted to displaying data using ADO.Net which are useful. There's also a good chapter on ASP.NET security. Most if not all of this information is available on the web, however having a single book that covers these topics is well worthwhile - it's a great book to have by your side when you are writing ASP.NET sites.

4-0 out of 5 stars Broad and deep coverage
The two books of this series (Core Reference & Advanced Topics) offer broad and deep coverage of ASP.NET.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for Beginners
The book dives straight into the code and technicals and doesn't give enough context behind what is going on. I gave it up after first 2 chapters.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not For Professionals
This book only mostly explains basic functionality like how to drag and drop controls, etc. When I purchased this book, I expected to find out how to go beyond this basic functionality like customizing controls, using templates and thorough explanation about them.
2-0 out of 5 stars ASP.Net newbies need to stay away from this book
Don't say I did not warn you, this book is not for ASP.NET newbies. I'm fairly good with VB.NET and yet I simply can't use this book to learn ASP.Net. You will not even get past the first few pages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Choice!
Books inside this box are very good.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent all-around .NET 2005 pack
In my opinion, Wrox puts out some of the best books for coders, and as a .NET developer this pack is perfect. Between the 4 books they cover in detail the .NET framework, C#, ASP.NET, Windows development, higher-level OOP concepts (including generics), and ADO.NET, plus a slew of other things; with plenty of great examples and code snippets. Pretty much anything to do with .NET developed in included in the boxed set, with the exception of VB.NET -- there are many VB.NET samples in some of the books, but it's predominantly a C# centric package.
4-0 out of 5 stars Can't go wrong with this set
In my opinion this is one of the best values out there. These guys know how to write clear and concise examples.I know Wrox books can be intimidating for their geek factor.I mean they really don't go out of their way to have their covers designed.Instead they just choose to slap whatever balding team of programmers that wrote the book right on the cover.Still, I want to say that this set of books was a really nice read.It got me up to speed with .net 2.0 features in a matter of a week. The .net Framework 2.0 book is not a reference book by the way...it's more of a guide as to the *new* features.Keep in mind that this set seams to assume you have previous .net 1.0/1.1 experience but the C# book that it comes with is pretty much from the ground up.Don't get this set if your language of choice is VB.net. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best ASP.NET books
I finished reading this book yesterday and I am very pleased with it. The author starts by explaining some programming basics for both languages (VB.NET and C#). Then he explains ASP controls (html controls and validation controls). During the rest of the book, he develops a web-based intranet and explains many features of ASP such as ADO.NET, DataGrid and DataList controls, DataSets, etc. There is a chapter where the author explains how we can build a shopping cart and connect it to paypal which I found very interesting. The code is very neat and easy to understand. I totally recommend this book to those who would like to learn ASP.NET as well those who want to expand their ASP.NET knowledge.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best .Net Book
The best thing about this book is someone like me who is new to the .DOT NET was able to learn & the paralell comparison between the VB & C# code is excellent. The only disappointment is that with the text book I was expecting a CD with Adobe Reader version as well. Which I did not recieve.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sitepoint ASP.NET

4-0 out of 5 stars Broad and deep coverage
The two books of this series (Core Reference & Advanced Topics) offer broad and deep coverage of ASP.NET.
4-0 out of 5 stars Written by somebody who knows what he is talking about
Basics of .net framework is presented in aclear and lucid style. This book is a joy to read and .by the way there is not much difference in content wise between applied .Net framework programming and this book. My only worry is the speed at which microsoft is pushing .net versions as if there is no tommorrow! [Subsequently the catch up I have to do on reading all this!]

5-0 out of 5 stars FINALLY a book geared at the experienced developer...
If you need to do more than just write sample code for tutorials, then this is the book for you. It provides valuable coverage of the ASP.NET landscape. I learned things about web services I never knew I could do with .NET.

3-0 out of 5 stars a mixed bag
I was rather dissapointed in this book. The first 7 chapters are either irrelevant to development (please put the historical crap on the web site) or redundant (the installation, overview and admin stuff ARE on the web site). The technical chapters (from 7 on) are good stuff. The one glaringly obvious (at least to me) part that is missing, is a decent deployment technique. I develop web sites and want to be able to move my site from a development environment to a production environment, without having to do it piecemeal. I have still not found a way to do this for DotNetNuke, and I've been digging around for quite a while looking for it. I'd hoped that this book would address this issue. It doesn't.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great place to start...
The text is very comprehensive with plenty of in-depth discussion of the DNN core, module architecture, etc. It will definitely get you going. What's missing is a section for hardcore module development, but perhaps that is a topic for a complete book in itself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
Although I dove into the technical chapters when I first received the book, the "Evolution of DNN" chapter was a facinating study in how a personal "project" evolves into a world class "product".Shaun Walker obviously put his soul into this chapter and it reads like a proud papa telling the tale of his famous son.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book for Those Wishing to Work With ASP.NET and C#
I have been a professional web developer for the past 8 years working for a boutique web development shop. While we have done a decent bit of classic ASP over the years, prior to 2006 we have not jumped aggressively on the .NET bandwagon. The advent of ASP.NET 2.0 and the growing din of client requests has changed that and we are now focusing on .NET development.
3-0 out of 5 stars A Behemoth
This book is choc-full of useful material on ASP.net. A monster
3-0 out of 5 stars Probably my last Apress Book
I've just about had it with Apress books such as this one.The text shows the code for the various examples, but often the code is just a snippet, or it's incomplete, or it has errors. And you don't find this out unless you download the book's code from Apress.com.If you're like me and like to work the examples out on your own as you read, the whole process becomes very aggravating.I think I'll switch back to books from O'Reilly. With O'Reilly books, the authors present a complete, working version of the code on the page. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Programming ASP.NET (3rd edition)
I was reading this book as a sequel to "Programming C#" by Jesse
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to get you rolling
I haven't written many asp.net apps in the last 1.5 years having been pulled into other programming projects. I was recently assigned to a new project that is strictly asp.net.
5-0 out of 5 stars VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
Are you a programmer or web developer who wants to build web applications using Microsoft's powerful new ASP.NET 2.0 platform? Well, you're in luck! Authors Jesse Liberty and Dan Hurwitz, have done an outstanding job of writing a 3rd edition of a book that will teach you all you need to know to build professional quality, interactive, robust data-driven web applications.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Are you a web developer? If you are, then this book is for you. Author Christian Wenz, has done an outstanding job of writing a book for developers who are using ASP.NET and would like to take their applications a step further by using the Ajax technology; and, for developers who are using another technology, but are interested in the Atlas framework.
4-0 out of 5 stars Most helpful if you're committed to the Microsoft platform...
As they've done with most popular technologies, Microsoft took Ajax and wrapped it up into a form that is tightly integrated with their own software framework. The result is what they call Atlas, and it's basically Ajax integrated with ASP.NET.If that's your platform of choice, then you'll likely find a lot of value in the book Programming Atlas by Christian Wenz.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good reference, but do we really need Atlas books?
Even though Atlas has not yet been officially released, this book is already a late comer to the market. It's been beaten to market by a variety of AJAX texts that included some coverage of Atlas and at least one dedicated Atlas book from Apress. With all the press around Ajax and the huge Microsoft ASP.NET programmers market, putting out a book in the Atlas category is an opportunity that won't be ignored by the major publishing houses. After trying out Atlas for a while during its Community Technology Preview (CTP) release and seeing the fairly extensive documentation and examples released by both Microsoft and the community, I tend to think that it's an opportunity that they might best have chosen to ignore just the same.

4-0 out of 5 stars Overall Good Introduction to ASP.NET 2.0
Chapters (hours) 1 through 21 were easy to follow and complete.Chapters 22 through 24 are a different story, however.Followed directions closely to create a photo sharing web site, but after checking many times, the code I typed in only worked about 90% correctly.I may have followed the instructions incorrectly, but that is my one issue with the book. The first 21 chapters were easy to follow and the last 3 chapters were 10 times harder.I still think it was worth it - I just wish the difficulty could have ramped up linearly instead of exponentially.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for Beginners
I have been developing in MS ACCESS, VB, and SQL SERVER for several years; but I had no prior experience in web development. This book was great at laying a foundation for web-development. Each hour is a new piece of the web development puzzle. The author assumes you know nothing; while this may be frustrating for experienced developers, it does a lot of hand-holding for the novice web developer.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good start but dont expect to start publishing sites
I purchased this book to get started in ASP.I am a avid VB/Net and C# programmer so the languages were not a problem.I liked this book because it only touched on the languages slightly 2 chapters.I wanted to learn the basics of ASP 2.0 which this book does teach.

I bought this book to learn ASP.NET 2.0 and also to have a good reference for me on 2.0 as i'm not new on ASP.NET, even if you want to learn ASP.NET 2.0 from scratch, you should get this book because its a great value and a great piece of work!
5-0 out of 5 stars The best book for beginners in ASP
Have you seen the movie "Matrix"? Remember, when Neo says "I know Kung-Fu!" in 1 min after they plugged his head to the computer? I had the same feeling about ASP.NET after reading this book :-)
5-0 out of 5 stars Fresh Start with ASP.NET 2.0
Unlike many other ASP.NET 2.0 books which are upgraded from a 1.1 version, this book is actually upgraded from the ASP.NET 2.0 Upgrader's Guide by the same author, therefore, more focused on the 2.0 (and VS 2005) way of doing things. If you want a 2.0 book with 1.1 details, this book will not help you much. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Doctor knows best
Doctor Khosravi knows his stuff and he writes well. He also has a feel for the kind of questions his readers are going to ask first and answers them at the appropriate time. I was very pleased to see him explain how to implement a simple server control on page 16 because that's one of the first things I wanted to know after writing my first server control. It's quite possible his editor should get some credit here also.

4-0 out of 5 stars A reference book you'll want to keep close at hand...
Author Jeffrey Bardzell does a great job of explaining the ins-and-outs of ASP, ColdFusion, and PHP use within Dreamweaver 8 in MACROMEDIA DREAMWEAVER 8 WITH ASP, COLDFUSION, AND PHP: TRAINING FROM THE SOURCE.Not only does the book cover the subject matter in an easy-to-follow style, but examples and sample files are also provided on the CD that comes with the book.As a person who learns more by doing than by just simply reading about it or seeing it in a diagram, I found this feature to be very useful.
2-0 out of 5 stars No online errata for this book
I'll say something good first.I found the author to be well skilled in explaining the concepts as well as the procedure when using Dreamweaver 8.Each chapter is written like a good lesson plan, and takes you through the book task by task.I usually have to read more than one book on a technology because what one author fails to explain adequately, another explains very well. That is the case with this book, But don't buy this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars good introduction to ASP.NET
I found this book to be an excellent introduction to ASP.NET. Some reviewers have stated that the chapters at the beginning of the book are too complex. This material is, however, fundamental to developing the ability to program ASP.NET pages effectively.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book is great!!!
The book contains many descriptions about the new ASP.NET 2.0 and compares to older versions of asp.net and asp. It describes everything step by step so that it is easy to follow examples and learn ASP.NET 2.0 framework. It is great for begginers and intermediate users.

5-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat experienced and curious?

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Atlas Reference
This book contains a good balance of information regarding the three main ways to program Atlas: JavaScript, AtlasScript, and server controls. Most Atlas-related articles and books tend to focus on one or two of those methods, because that's what the author is comfortable with, but Foundations of Atlas nicely covers all three.
5-0 out of 5 stars Stop your whining!
I've been seeing a lot of bad reviews for this book since (apparently) there are a lot of errors in the code.I suppose if your skills are lacking and you need to have a book spoon-feed you in order to learn a new technology, then this book probably is not for you.
1-0 out of 5 stars Very, very poor
This book starts off with code errors in the first chapter. None of the code will compile. What a waste!!!! Stay away from this one!!!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for bringing you up to speed
Prior to purchasing this book I had no experience with ASP whatsoever. One day at work I was told that I needed to study up on ASP, and fast.I didn't really know where to start, but I ended up with this book, and it has been a lifesaver.I took the time to work through the examples in a select few key chapters, and was amazed that after only a couple of days I had developed the skills necessary for basic ASP development.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent beginner book for web development
This book starts by giving an overview of how the browser, server, and pages interact to deliver web-based data and pages. The first 3 chapters, and the XML intro, are worth the cost of this book.I started this book with very little understanding of how dynamic web pages are delivered over the net, and am now ready and anxious to take on my first web development challenge. Can't wait to put the info in this book to use! The writing style is great also - very seamless and easy understand, even after 6 authors compile their knowledge into one volume!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best introductory books ever
This text is so packed with information, it even goes beyond asp and introduces XML and COM+....so well written, so concise, publishers throughtout the country need to learn from wrox' writers on how to do technical books right! Every bit of code is explained in great detail, and while there are some errors, the website covers nearly all of them. Case in point: I won't be selling my copy back! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
I am using ASP.NET 2.0 with forms-based security and wanted to authenticate and authorize using Active Directory users and groups as ASP.NET users and roles. After many hours and much research, I had authentication working. After more hours and research, I was looking at doing authorization using ADAM and not getting it to work. I was reading posts, blogs, MSDN articles, everything I could find. I purchased this e-book and downloaded it. Within hours I had authorization working in Active Directory like I originally wanted to.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This is one of the best technical books I've ever read. It gives us detailed information of how ASP.NET 2.0 works behind the scene.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book , gives background info.
This is a great book about asp.net 2.0, IIS and security. It provides a lot of background info, once you have that the other pieces of asp.net fall into place and things make a lot more sense. I think for code examples I can always use Google, background info on how it all works together is what you read a book for and this book delivers. I hope this will not be the author's last book. ...
