4-0 out of 5 stars good for catching up to XPATH 2.0
I am already familiar with XSLT and XPATH 1.0 so i found the initial 5 chapters kinda dumbed down. the 6th chapter is interesting on XLINK and Xpointer but only the basics are shown here i wished a few real world implentations were used and i wish they went into XQuery more but i guess that would be another book. starting from chapter 7-12 gets interesting with all the different new functions and types in Xpath 2.0. It was an overal easy read and good for updating your XPath skills or read the initial 5 chapters to get a better view on Xpath. I would at least have an introductory experience with XSLT before u read this book although they explain intro XSLT as they go on. SUMMARY: for an intermediate, start reading from chapter 6. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great combination to Java and XML book.
This is a very good compliment to the O'Reilly Java and XML book.It gives a good combination of theory and practical application. It also serves as a good quick reference if you need to deal a good deal with Java and XSLT.May not be the book for you if you are trying to learn XSLT, but does a good job of showing how Java fits into the world of XSLT.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful introduction to XSLT in Java
I found this book to be a very helpful introduction to the use of XSLT in Java. The text is well written and easy to follow, with examples that truly illuminate the concepts being demonstrated. While other reviewers have found the author's focus on transformations from XML to HTML to be a limitation, I found that this approach helped me focus on XSLT concepts without getting bogged down in discussions of other languages simply for the purpose of illustration.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very cool book that dvelves deep into using XSLT with Java
I am very much impressed with the content of the book and the examples in particular. The book covers the breadth of using java and XSLT and also gives a nice case study using MVC architecture.

3-0 out of 5 stars Verbose
I bought Harold's book to help me move from XHTML to XML and to handle data with PHP which does not fit well in a relational database / SQL.This book bogs down quickly in very long explanations & examples which could have been a fraction of the size.I think it has good coverage, but Harold uses too many words every time he approaches a subject. To paraphrase someone else, Harold could write 10,000 words on the color red.
2-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't cover DOM and SAX
I haven' read the book, only browsed its TOC. It doesn't cover the Document Object Model (DOM) and the Simple API for XML (SAX). It also discusses CSS in too much detail. These days, web development professionals will probably have a knowledge of both HTML and CSS before starting with XML.
1-0 out of 5 stars Pulp paper
I have purchased many books from Amazon, but this one is printed on the lowest-quality paper I've ever experienced.Though it's relatively new, the yellowed pages look like a 1960's pulp novel. There is literally a 2mm yellow border surrounding each page.Come on "Hungry Minds" publishers, you can do better than this. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Brief Overview
This is a nice brief introductory overview of xml in general and its implementations in biological research. The thing I liked about it was it was not too intensive on any topic, and it provided a lot of useful resources both online and literature-wise for me to look up for more information.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good choice if you're ready to dive into XForms...
One of the recent IBM acquisitions leads me to believe that the XForms standard will begin to play a larger part in my area of software expertise. To that end, I got a review copy of XForms Essentials by Micah Dubinko in order to try and get a basic understanding of the standard and technology. The book does a pretty good job of that, but is probably more useful for someone who is all ready to dig in and use it.
3-0 out of 5 stars Read the W3C documents instead.
This book is a poor introduction to XForms. In a text that is only slightly larger than a pamphlet, the author attempts to do much more than simply introduce XForms, and the result is that nothing ends up being explained well.
5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Book
XForms is, very quietly, changing the way that we view the web, putting it on a much more solid XML based footing. While the specification is difficult to comprehend at the best of times, the power of the specification is such that it provides a solid basis on which to build the XML web.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an excellent book for either a newbie or a seasoned programmer
I was looking for a book that would introduce the overall concepts of the many XML technologies and give me a chance to play with them on my own. Although this book is not accompanied by a CD, I would prefer to enter the code myself and learn from making a mistake here and there. The concepts are very clearly described in concise and meaningful language in this book with a wealth of examples.
2-0 out of 5 stars Much too wordy in all the wrong places
I usually don't say anything unless I have something nice to say, but I feel the positive reviews for this book are highly overrated. I'm quite stunned by how much copy the author of this book managed to churn out on what otherwise could have been a concise and to-the-point tutorial. Do I really need to read through 7 paragraphs on the decision-making process of the W3C before I can learn about XML schemas...? While some may find that kind of information thorough, I find it distracting. The reviewers who feel this book was well-written obviously don't think good writing should be compelling. The writing style, while organized and grammatically correct, is very very dry and repetitious. The tone reminds me of the more boring professors I had in college. There is no humor or person-to-person feel you get with writers like Laura Lemay. Even given the author's verbosity, the book (almost flagrantly) glosses over what I felt should have been the most important lesson: the XSD schema language, which most people agree to be the standard syntax for XML. If you want an efficient introduction to XML, you are better off running through the online tutorials offered on the w3schools website.

4-0 out of 5 stars Blends concepts and code, paper book and online source
This book does a great job of introducing the basic concepts and getting you into code soon, so you can see the concepts and syntax in action. The topics included XML, CSS, XSLT and XPath, DOM, SAX, and XML Schemas. All these abbreviations are explained in the book. The core concepts are well introduced without being overwhelmed in syntax, and advice if often given on what is best to use (for example "Can I use DOM or SAX instead of XSLT?").5-0 out of 5 stars great book, great value
This book is probably the best value of any of the technical book I've purchased. At only $..., this book covers all the important aspects of XML in a very understable and enjoyable way. It's laid out well and the examples (and following explanations) are clear and very helpful. If only all technical books could be written this well. And is that the most aesthetically pleasing cover you've ever seen or what?

5-0 out of 5 stars Goes beyond and explains it all
This book not only explains how to do write in XHTML and CSS but it tells you why the W3C has changed its standards and why you should write in these two recommendations. It gives you thoroughly explained examples, and explains it in different ways to make you sure that you get it in case you didn't the first time.
3-0 out of 5 stars Accesibility or not
I think the author has done a good job in writing a book that highlights the issues of accessibility - an enormous topic. With eyesight being amongst comon 'issues' people have, the ability to magnify a page is important - guess what I need to be able to do?
5-0 out of 5 stars Eases the Transition
OK, so you really know that you need to move on to Style Sheets and the new version of HTML. But you've put it off. The books on XHTML and CSS are long and tedious, and written for beginners so they contain a lot of fluff that you already know.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful, and very clear.
This books presents XSL in nice bite-sized chapters that are clear, to-the-point, and illustrated with good examples.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not great
A reasonable work on XSL, but certainly not the best. This book is neither fully a reference or an introduction. On the positive side the book provides a terse and intelligent introduction to the topic. On the negative side the explanation of a complex topic like XPath not covered in as much depth as it probably should be, and there are some extraneous sections on HTML and CSS which are better covered in other works. On the whole a good book, but not a great book. If you are interested in XSL you should try Michael Kay's XSLT Programmers Reference and Sal Mangano's XSLT Cookbook.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not supported any longer
Don't waste your money. This book isn't supported any longer by the author and publisher so the code is no longer on the web. The code inside the book is so disjointed that I found it impossible to follow. They shouldn't be selling expired books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read this BEFORE you read any other Actionscript books
This book was suprisingly useful. I bought it to understand how to connect Flash to XML server back ends, but it quickly taught me much more that I was not expecting. The true value of this book is teaching how to use Actionscript 1.0 to make Flash Clients talk to servers with the fastest, leanest possible code (Not necessarily XML.)
5-0 out of 5 stars A great end- to-end guide
I used this book to add database capabilities to our flash app, and could not have done it with out it. Well, perhaps that's an exaggeration, but it would have taken *significantly* longer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Intro To XML
I had never used XML for anything, but I knew it had become very important in today's world. I was a little hesitant at first, since some MS Press books I'd read in the past were very dry and technical. To the contrary, however, this book is very well written with easy-to-understand examples. It provided me, someone who knew nothing of XML, with a very gentle introduction to the subject matter. It's very readable and you'll walk away from it with a very strong foundational knowledge of XML.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don Box , please stop!
Like all the stuff Don Box wrote and published, this book is yet 2-0 out of 5 stars This is not the best Don Box, sorry
My impression is that Don Box is missing the mathematical bases to write this kind of ambitious books. There are big mistakes that show how he is missing a solid background on "graph theory" and mathematics. In my personal opinion he is a lot better writing about programming and should avoid this kind of topics.

1-0 out of 5 stars What a let-down!
I ordered this book without even thumbing through it - that's how much faith I had in Don Box after reading his other books in this series. What a disappointment! This book is poorly organized, rife with errors and doesn't seem to have any discernable target audience.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Service
Excellent Service. Ordered this product internationally, and within the specified time as specified according to my shipment plan, was with me.

1-0 out of 5 stars NOT A CONCISE GUIDE
This book is NOT a concise guide as the editorial review says. It is cluttered up with wordy, conversational talk unrelated to learning html/xml. The author tells about him, his family, his friends, skateboarding, christmas toys, FOX news, and everything else under the sun, cluttering up the actual learning of html/xml. And he continually clutters up the text with phrases such as; as you can see, earlier I mentioned, as you know, as previously mentioned, earlier in the chapter you learned, etc.
5-0 out of 5 stars Impressive!
I was asked if I would be willing to teach web design as an advanced course offering for high school students. I'm not new to HTML, but I have been using a WISIWYG app to manage website for years. With this course, I felt it was important to start at the beginning in order for the students to have the solid foundation of web design and it' code, and then move into the current apps. I also fekt I needed a quick refresher. Thus I was looking for a book that would clearly explain the fundamentals of HTML and be simplistic enough for high school students. After seaching I came across this one.

1-0 out of 5 stars Kangaroos jump around less than this book
I purchased this book based upon recommendations listed here on Amazon.I should have looked elsewhere for reviews. This book is absolutely unreadable. The author jumps from topic to topic and then back that it makes my head spin.He refers to future chapters, future concepts, and external resources to distraction.
5-0 out of 5 stars From beginning to the end, XML Schema is explained
Neil Bradley in his fourth book tells you everything you would ever want to know about XML Schemas or better knows as XSD for XML Schema Definition. With the popularity that various XML technologies are attracting these days, every developer, architect and designer needs to know what XML Schema is and how it used. This topic is covered in many other books, but Bradley's book has by far the most extensive, comprehensive and thorough coverage of the topic. It shows that author truly understand the topic at hand, and can convey the message clearly to the reader. The organization of the book starts with the author explaining how the XML Schema standard defines a template that documents created based on that template must conform to, followed by showing the reader how to define reusable data blocks based on the XML Schema language, and it finishes with XML Schema related topic such as namespaces and a rather complete overview what's out there and where to get more information.
4-0 out of 5 stars Solid reference work
This is a solid reference work on XML Schema. I wouldn't go looking to it for advice on how to solve particular problems with XML Schema. But if you are looking for a quick reference guide that covers all of the syntax with annotated examples then you have come to the right place. The graphics, which are light-weight and to the point help to illustrate the key points.Read more
