4-0 out of 5 stars understanding a standard
I found that the author did a really good job in describing these technologies.4-0 out of 5 stars Hyperlinks and the Semantic Web
If you are like most, your introduction to hypertext was when you used a browser for the first time. You saw how intuitive it was that links were visible on a web page, and how easy it was to click on a link and be taken anyplace else on the web. The great acceptance of the web and its browsers was due in no small part to the ease of use, and the ease of writing HTML pages.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference
This is an outstanding book for ASP programmers ... It serves as a great reference source on a variety of topics. I have been very impressed with the depth and breadth of coverage (contrary to one of the reviews I read). Great value. It'll remain on my shelf for a long time.

1-0 out of 5 stars This is a BAD choice for me
I ordered the book and read it. I think that the book is not good for any ASP programmer. First, it is not complete. For example, it didn't cover server.transfer, which is an excellent feature in ASP 3.0. Second, the description about ADO is so simple that I cannot get any idea about ADO.5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for ASP Programming
I'm an experienced programmer with 10 years of VB Client/Server and new to the WEB.The WEB is maddeningly different. This book has provided me with THE road map of modern ASP development. It is well organized. Each chapter is well selected. The content of each chapter is such that the subject is adequately covered and I can always get the book from which the chapter is extracted if I want more information. As one commenter put it, its like getting the work product of a half dozen research assistants, each of whom sifted dozens of books.Read more

I am a professional programmer with a background in C++ Windows programming who started learning JAVA a year ago.I bought this book with the intention of learning how to leverage XML in JAVA apps and servlets.I made it through the first chapter just fine and then all heck broke loose.I could not get the examples to work, the text became as clear as mud and I had to put the book down in disgust because every other chapter in the book lynchpins on knowledge from the previous one. This would not be a good buy in my humble opinion. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Just flat out wrong sometimes
As a complete newbie to XML this was a good starter. As I got deeper into XML I found several mistakes/deficiencies in the book, and sometimes the author just flat out seemed to not know what he was talking about. For instance, the claim on page 86 that (#CDATA) is a valid DTD element content definition is flat out wrong. His description of Schema element declarations (pp. 114-115) teaches that using globals/refs is the only way to define complex elements, and is inappropriate for his example. He makes no mention of globals at all, leaving the reader confused.I have ceased to trust this book as a valid source of XML information.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Overview of XML
As a Perl programmer, my first instinct when given some XML to process is to grab the appropriate Perl module (probably XML::XPath or XML::LibXML) and use that to do whatever I need to. Although that usually gets the job done, reading this book opened my eyes to a number of other XML processing tools that will sometimes be more useful than a Perl program. Actually Perl doesn't get mentioned at all in the index, whereas Java gets half a column of entries.
5-0 out of 5 stars Useful tips for every XML task you're likely to want to do
This is my favorite O'Reilly book. The scope covers everything you can imagine for working with XML.I really like the depth of information in every hack ('hack' in the sense of ways to get something done).Whenever a tool is mentioned, there is often additional info about related tools that do similar functionality and why you would choose one or the other. Each hack is like a well-crafted short story.
5-0 out of 5 stars helpful supplement
I'm familiar with XML and have found this book to be helpful. Not a book to learn XML, it is a place to pick up new information that can help to complete a toolbox already in the making. There were some hints to bridge gaps between what I want to do and what I know how to do. I plan to have it nearby to make my work easier and faster. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but a little wordy
RSS is just XML in a certain format. At its core, it's pretty basic.
3-0 out of 5 stars A Little Misleading
For the most part, industry standard RSS is a very short list of simple XML elements.Standard RSS Readers only look for those standardized tags to create the display. You can verify that by opening almost any public RSS XML document and just looking at it.RSS is simple enough that you could probably pick it up by just looking at a well formed sample file and reading the short syntax document provided for free by the creators (UserLand Software for RSS 2.0 or the RSS-DEV Working Group for RSS 1.0 - FeedValidator.org has links to the documentation). After reading this title, I am a little confused as to whom target audience is supposed to be.
4-0 out of 5 stars One of the few titles on RSS. And it's good, too!
This book really is a must-have (or must-read-once) for anyone interested in RSS syndication technology.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a learning tool
Minimal examples, very little "big picture" orientation, long reference-style lists with minimal explanation of terms if any, and gives short shrift to how XSL:FO works with XSLT.The omission of fo: prefixes in examples is a an auctorial preference I find particularly annoying.Unfortunately it appears to be difficult to locate alternative books.

2-0 out of 5 stars Definitive - Yes, Effective - No
I'm surprised so many people have given this book a good review.I went with this book after the O'Reilly book was back ordered. What a mistake. The book might cover every formatting object in the W3C XSL-FO recommendation, but it's more like reading just that, the recommendation (which can be found online).
1-0 out of 5 stars How did this book get published?
There are some exposition paragraphs at the beginning of each topic. Otherwise the book is just page after page of bulleted lists. It's confusing, hard to read, and not worth your time. Read the O'Reilly book on XSL-FO instead. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent XQuery starter book and reference
This book is a compact and thorough guide to XQuery. The Jonathan Robie tutorial in the beginning of the book is itself worth the overall price of the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice coverage of XQuery/XPath
A very useful explanation of XQuery and how to use it to analyse XML data. The book shows how this can be done with or without a supporting XML Schema or DTD that describes the XML. The authors explain why this goes beyond a Google-type search. The latter does not (at least currently) know or use any structural information about data, primarily because it scans all types of mostly unstructured data.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent survey of a complex topic by some of the designers

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for my needs
At first I was somewhat skeptical due to a couple of negative reviews. However, I was desparate. The other XML books I've read (and fallen asleep with) seem to be restatements of the W3C specifications. I am a DBA/Data Architect in the midst of an international Web Services and SOA project and I needed something fast. As it turns out, this was probably the best investment in reference materials I've made in a long time. I guess I am not really sure what the other reviewers missed, but this book was perfect for me. I hold mixed roles of DBA as well as Data Architect - data modelling mostly. Recently, I was tasked with trying to determine why and how all of this XML stuff fits in a SOA project, and from the data perspective. Although I've been a DBA for too many years to share, I've positioned myself mostly at the persistence layer. This book really opened my eyes. Thorough, concise, and very focused on what "data folks" need. Five stars were a must for me.

2-0 out of 5 stars This book is not ... a lot of things
The content of the book is very appealing, but I found many problems:
3-0 out of 5 stars What a Waste of Time & Money !
I must not have gotten the same book that the other reviewers got.I rarely write bad reviews.I've normally researched the books I buy pretty thoroughly. But I screwed up this time

4-0 out of 5 stars Another Excellent Offering From O'Reilly
I own a sizable collection of O'Reilly books and have found them to in general be very well written and useful."Upgrading to PHP 5" continues this tradition superbly.
5-0 out of 5 stars Clear and well-written
The author does a great job summarizing common PHP characteristics and elaborating on PHP 5 improvements, with plenty of well-chosen code examples. Well suited for the established PHP programmer making the transition to PHP 5. For those starting out, use "Learning PHP 5" instead. ... Read more
