It's a good book, but despite the hype it really doesn't go into a lot of detail.
4-0 out of 5 stars MySQL at its best
Paul DuBois is an excellent author. I bought his book, MySQL, about 4 years ago and used it until it was out of date. This new edition proves once again that he is one of the best authors and authorities in this field.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book
This book is used at least once a day.Illustrations are clear, and examples concise.Covers all aspects of MySQL.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great book; unethical publisher
This book is excellent. The author writes about programming in a clear and concise way that makes Java make sense. While Java may not be the simplest language to start with, it is widely used throughout the industry and provides a solid stepping stone to other languages. Savitch provides many examples of code and explains how it works, step by step. Too many programming books assume the reader will fill in missing pieces. Finally, an author who fills them in for us!
5-0 out of 5 stars Best Written Java Book
The author, Savitch, writes some of the best-written, easy-to-read computer language books. The fourth edition is a concisely-written, enjoyable book with excellent examples and coverage of Java 5.0, which is the newest, latest revision as of January '06.
5-0 out of 5 stars 1st edition review
I have just completed (i need only two more chapters) the first of edition of this book. While not as exhaustive as the the edition for sale here I can tell you the author is good at what he does.I haven't decided if I am going to purchase this edition but let me say that the author's prose style reminds me of the best computer programming books I read while I was an undergraduate at the University of Florida in the early 90's.This book is suitable for teaching a first or second year class of computer science students at a university.Unlike those silly "Teach yourself Java programming in 24 hours" this is the kind of programming book that really teaches you something. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A NATIVE WINDOWS C GUIDING ANGEL

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best Window programming books
This book is one of the best because it forms a foundation for everything that comes after. If you want to understand Windows, you have to have it. It doesn't cover advanced topics, but in order to understand advanced Windows programming, you need to understand everything in this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great foundation book

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly great book on algorithm design
I use this book in a course and I am immensely pleased with it. I must point out, though, that this is a very theoretical book. There is not much code and the authors use rather high-level psuedo code for what's there. However, it is great at explaining concepts and what the generic algorithms actually do. So it does its job quite brilliantly. If you need more code, you might want to pick up the Sedewick books, although the code could be better commented and organized if you asked me.

3-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Wordy
This book is not concise; also the pseudocode syntax used in the book is annoying.
5-0 out of 5 stars dealing with NP completeness
The text offers an interesting blend of rigour and informality. The numerous proofs in each chapter have that rigour. Yet what may be more important is how the text remains accessible to a primarily undergraduate audience.

The PHP server-side scripting language and the MySQL database management system (DBMS) make a potent pair. Both are open-source products--free of charge for most purposes--remarkably strong, and capable of handling all but the most enormous transaction loads. Both are supported by large, skilled, and enthusiastic communities of architects, programmers, and designers. Read more

Excellent book. All their examples work and they describe the differences that can be encountered in different recent versions of PHP. Pretty much all you need is here, and the whole book comes on the CD so you can take it with you when you are travelling.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Read and Reference
For beginners this book is very worthwhile. I bought 2 "PHP and MySQL" books from Amazon and I haven't even opened the other book. Whenever I need code examples or a reference this book provides me with the answers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most O'Reilly book are quality references.
I wouldn't necessarily recommend an O'Reilly book to a beginner, just learning, but for anyone with some experience, these are the preferred learning & reference tools.
1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
The examples are not easy to follow and it does not give sufficient explanation. It is basically useless to me.
4-0 out of 5 stars Not for those with a C++ background
My background is in C++ with some experience with Java and no experience with .NET.I didn't fully realize how similar C++ is to C# until I finished this book, and I think my money would have been better spent buying a book on .NET.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy it
This book takes you through the CLR and explains how and why it works. The aurthor teaches you about the metadata all the way down to whats inside the internal data sructures the CLR uses. You will learn about what gets put on the stack and heap and what data, and in what order things are on the stack and heap. There is so much to the CLR and its difficult to put it all down. This book does a good job at explaining it all in an orginized easy to read fasion. At first glance this book looks like its just an introduction to the .NET Framework and then a C# language tutorial starting with the primitive types and then moving on up to generics. This is not the case, it starts off explaing the what the .NET Framework is and the CLRs execution model. Then it goes into metadata and application configuration and installation. Then it gets into the nitty gritty. It starts you off explaining the types in chapter 4, this insnt just a tutorial to ints and objects, it takes you deep under the covers. You will also get a good understanding of the various tools, like NGen.exe and when and why you should and shouldnt use it. There is alot of difficult content in this book, you will atleast understand it better if you read this. There is so much about this book that I can say but all I need to say is buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential CLR Internals
I echo the positive reviews below. If you already know the .Net platform fairly well and want to understand the internals of the CLR, this is the best place to start. This edition is as good or better than his 1.0/1.1 version, Applied .Net Framework Programming.

4-0 out of 5 stars For advanced developers
This book gives a deep view of the CLR and framework. You can find tips for performance, and complete description of many functionalities of the framework. The bad think of this book, is that don't come with a CD, and because this, you lost a quick find and a way to carry the book with you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Are You Ready for .NET 3.0 Yet?
Just as I was beginning to get a bit of a handle on .NET Version 2.0, along comes .NET 3.0 as part of the new Windows Vista operating system. To be sure, you can run it on XP with SP2 installed after you have installed .NET Framework 3.0. The book presumes that you have experience with .NET 2.0 and with C#. If you do not, the author recommends you read some of his earlier books.

This book is the destined to be not only a classic but also the standard for WPF development. It's look and feel is reminiscent of his previous classic: Programming Windows. So much so, in fact, that you could call this his long awaited 6th edition.

I have had this book for about 2 weeks now, as Amazon delivered it to me early before the official release.I am a tech book junkie.I buy a lot of tech books. This is the best programming text I have purchased in the last couple of years.Petzold does a great job explaining WPF from both a nuts & bolts prespective and a big picture perspective.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Book with Relevant Articles
This is a great book. The writing style is very friendly and encourages the reader to keep turning pages. It is well organized and addresses areas (such as perfomance and profile) that very few Javascript books delve into. Also of value are the discussion of various third party libraries and the very relevant and detailed example chapters (e.g. implementing a type-ahead text component).Server side code is include for several common server side technologies (Java, PHP and .Net).All in all, this is an excellent book for those wishing to come up to speed on Ajax quickly.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lacks focus
If you are an experienced programmer and already familiar with design patterns, refactoring, and application architecture, then you will probably find this book to be very frustrating.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best AJAX Book Available Today
Ajax in Action by Dave Crane is the best Ajax book on the market today. With over 600 pages of content, this incredibly well-written text explains why Ajax is so powerful and how this simple programming feature (it really isn't difficult to learn at all) has changed web development forever. No longer are users and developers limited to a page reload world, as the power of this technology now has the ability to make the web work like regular applications. It's a trend that has been desired for a loooong time and boy does it ever deliver!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars XVII vs 17 - Names Matter
You know how much it helps to choose nice names for the variables in your programs - yes you will have seen some of these patterns before, but having the nice names to think with can be like Roman vs Decimal numerals - XVII or 17, there's a difference.Searching for [ Tidwell Interfaces ] you can find the author's site, which has free excerpts. Amazon lacks an "online excerpts available" pattern, is this good business or not, hmm.

5-0 out of 5 stars collection of interface design patterns
this is not a "how to design interfaces" book - more of a "here is what has worked in the past when people designed interfaces". it's great for inspiration, as its examples range across web apps, desktop apps, mobile devices and others.

4-0 out of 5 stars Clearly written, thoughtful content
I enjoyed this book for two reasons:

5-0 out of 5 stars Must-read if you're working with threaded Java applications...
It's common knowledge that you can easily get burned with Java programs that are multi-threaded.I would strongly recommend that if you are going down the multi-threaded path, you *need* to get this book...Java Concurrency In Practice by Brian Goetz. This bridges the gap between what the reference manuals say and how things work in the real world.
5-0 out of 5 stars At last! A readable, expert book on Java concurrency
Concurrency is hard and boring. Unfortunately, my favoured technique of ignoring it and hoping it will go away doesn't look like it's going to bear fruit. Fortunately, Java 5.0 introduced a new bunch of concurrency utilities, that work at a higher level of abstraction than marking blocks as synchronized and fields as volatile. Unfortunately, there haven't been that many books on the subject - even the good Java 5.0 books (e.g. Head First Java or Agile Java) make little mention of them - Thinking in Java being an honourable exception. Fortunately, JCIP is here, and it is authoritative stuff. And it's (mostly) very easy to understand. Plus, at 350 pages, it's not an enormous chore to slog through. It even covers changes to the upcoming Java 6.
5-0 out of 5 stars Who's afraid of concurrency now :-)
This gem of a book is a comprehensive and authoritative coverage of one of the most mentally intimidating programming concepts - concurrency.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the best reference for programmers new to Perl
I am not new to programming, but was new to Perl when I took a job that required a ton of pattern matching based scripting. I immediately convinced my boss to buy a bunch of Perl books, including this one. Usually, I am the type to use Google more than any book when learning a new language, but this book has been indispensible. I go to it first anytime I want to know how to do something in Perl, and 9 times out of 10 it is the only resource I need. I agree with other reviewers that this is not the book for beginning programmers, but I could have saved my boss a lot of money had I just had her buy me this one. It's all I've needed. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners
I'm a beginning programmer and found this book immensely helpful.Other titles I sampled included Java Head-on, Big Java, and Ivor Horton's Java, and they just weren't as clear and straightforward as this book. The order of topics is the best I've seen, and the chapter on classes covers everything you need to know to get started.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the best Introduction into a programing language book there is
I have been programming for several years, but not professionally. Modula-2, C, C++, Fortran, APL and Jave and have read intro books into all of these progamming languages, but there was either too little or the clarity was not there. This book explains things very well and has a very good set of examples. It also goes into things a little deeper so even if you are not a beginner, you can still get what you want out of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent for a beginner
The book excels at teaching a reader new to either Java or any programming language. Savitch goes comprehensively through the core classes that come with the standard Java distribution. Also, he uses Java 5, which is the latest major release of Java. If you are going to start learning Java, you might as well start here, instead of using a text that deals with earlier versions.

Editorial Review

It's important for anyone who creates Web sites--even those who rely on powerful editors like Dreamweaver or GoLive--to know HTML. The World Wide Web Consortium rewrote HTML as a subset of XML (dubbing it "XHTML 1.0") and the allowable code will eventually be stricter. Tags that are being phased out are labeled "deprecated"--current browsers can still handle them, but if you want your site to keep up with future browsers, not to mention conform to accessibility requirements, you will want to get on top of XHTML.Read more

This is simply the best HTML and CSS book.It has basically everything you need to know, with easy-to-find, easy-to-understand, and concise descriptions. It it not "web for dummies," rather, it is a very sophisticated and realistic approach to HTML and CSS, without a lot of hype or self-promotion.If you want to hear people wax poetical about the "EM" unit, you can get the book by Lie & Bos, but I think Castro's book is far more useful. She gives links to many web sites to help with more advanced stuff (Javascript, etc.), which is nice, but the book itself is incredibly comprehensive. And the layout of the book is a model for all instructional texts.A winner!

4-0 out of 5 stars For Reference or for learning
Elizabeth Castro has been writing Visual Quickstart Guides to HTML and web design in an easy to understand manner. Now she provides resources for those who would be interested in web design that will create sites that are usable for years to come. Since I first picked up the fourth edition of this book, I have been hooked on the series, because its explanations are written on a level for the average person. The organization allows the reader to move at their own pace and easily refer back to topics that they want to refresh.
5-0 out of 5 stars Coding
This book was a real help to me when I first became addicted to coding. The pictures are quite helpful, or at least more helpful than long explanations, and Elizabeth Castro is a fabulous writer. I learned so much that I went on to learn many other programming and coding languages with ease. You don't need to have any experience to use this book, it explains everything. Visual QuickStart Guide's are the best type in the market, cheap and easy to understand. So if you are itching to learn another computer language, I suggest checking them out! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must own if you are a c++ engineer
This book touches many aspects of the C++ programming language. Even you are an experienced engineer, you can learn a lot of things from this book and write more solid code. I regret that I didn't buy and read this book sooner.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE book next to Bjarne's for C++
A really good book where there is something to learn in every other example and chapter even if you consider yourself a master C++ programmer with years of experience.Besides reading the book, I happened to attend Scott's live training on Design patterns and Embedded C++ both of which were great experience.

3-0 out of 5 stars Thorough - but often filled with convoluted waffle.
This book starts out well, explaining the topics clearly and without a lot of unnecessary repetition. Unfortunately, the writing style chops and changes throughout the book with the worst written sections being a real chore to plough your way through.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best C++ Book
This is by far the best C++ book I have ever read. It is comprehensive, explanations are simple and to the point, and, up-to-date. I am referring to the 4th edition, of course. The earlier editions might be a bit outdated.

4-0 out of 5 stars C++ Primer 2nd Edition: A review
Lippman's book contains an introduction into the world of programming in the C++ language. The book goes from simple basics, assuming you know the basic foundations of a programming language, to in depth coverage of C++ programming. It explains both with examples of the programming language and with detailed explanations of what everything in the explanations means and does. This book is an excellent tool for both learning the C++ language and referencing back while you are working on programming something. However, it is not for the every day reader, as it requires a previous knowledge of basic programming language. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Complemento
Estos libros sin duda que sirven aun mas para reforzar el estudio para los exámenes.- ya que son oficiales trae unos tips que en otros libros del mismo estilo no lo mencionan.
2-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat OK for Reference, Bad for Test Preparation
I bought these thinking that Microsoft would be in the best position to write a training kit to prepare for the certification tests, since they are, after all, Microsoft tests.Big mistake. If I hadn't used the Transcender practice tests also, I would have gotten a rude awakening at the test center. The MS books have some decent reference information, but they don't prepare you for the tests.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best of the easiest, but being dated is showing through
As a perennial instructor of the Programming Languages (PL) course, I have been using Sebesta for a long, long time, having used Pratt's texts before that. There are two categories of books for the PL course:easy and hard. The hard ones snow you with formalism and seem to be proud of the fact that they don't provide motivation. The easy ones are typically boring collections of miscellany with no clear coherence.
5-0 out of 5 stars great comparative analysis of major languages
Sebesta's book is wonderful for his comparative analysis of several common languages. A typical computing book focuses on one language. Which is fine if you need to code in it. But Sebesta lets you step back and see, at a metalanguage view, what characterises a successful language.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good if the professor actually teaches
Ok, let me elaborate on that. The professor that taught using this book has now officially been fired from the university... Yeah, that said I can say that this book is not bad... unless your professor doesn't teach. It really feels like a supplement to your education in a sense, not a source of education.I believe that a really good textbook can essentially replace a professor if in need, I don't feel that this book does that, though it is a good book to supplement a poor to excellent education. It gives you the basic overview of the concepts but does not really go in depth with good intuitive explanations of everything. There are certainly topics that I wish it covered too.Overall, it is a good supplement to a poor and better education... but for horrendous education, it doesn't save a student. ...
