2-0 out of 5 stars Out of date now
Python has come a long way. This book does not instruct you on any of the newest features or capabilities.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great
I am new to Python and really, really like this book. I have read it cover to cover twice. It is obviously biased in favour of Python, but goes out of its way to explain the "gotchas" and things that are not intuitive. All in all, a WAY above average computer book!

2-0 out of 5 stars Definitely not a reference book
This book isn't horrible, but it meanders all over the place. It often confuses the issue by using several concepts in one example. There are too many instances where a technique is shown but then explained several chapters later. Sometimes this is necessary in language books, but this book abuses the idea.

4-0 out of 5 stars Once you understand the basics, you're ready for this one...
Python is one of those "hot" technologies that is becoming more accepted within a corporate world of IT.But after you learn the syntax and basics, how do you start building applications? That's the main thrust of the book Programming Python 3rd Edition by Mark Lutz. This starts to move from Hello World to Real World.
2-0 out of 5 stars Misleading
While I think this book has value for some, it's not the target audience Mr. Lutz states. This is NOT a book for somewhat advanced programmers. This is a book for beginners.
5-0 out of 5 stars a very well written introduction book
I liked this book because its approach is very practical. Probably one of the best python introduction books. I liked "In Action" chapters a lot. I used them for reference while gaining experience with the Python. It covers a lot of essential topic for the beginner. Python is also a very productive programming language and environment so both the book and language is highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Python made painless
I've read a lot of books that promise to make acquiring a new programming language easy. Most don't. "Beginning Python," however, does.
5-0 out of 5 stars beginning python
i've never reviewed a book before but after studying python with this book, i had to.
4-0 out of 5 stars Nice reading
Still reading it though, it's a simple read. Small, simpleexamples and easy reading motivates any reader for further reading, exploring the language. Though I'm sure the 10 projects in the last chapters are very eductional, I think the author should've spent more time with "Files and stuff" and GUI-programming. Maybe, removing a couple of the projects would give more space and foundation in the areas mentioned? (Where's the pickle, Magnus?) Anyway, I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn the Python language. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars outstanding beginners programming book
Most beginning programming books do an ok job of explaining syntax features, but then they lose you when it comes time to put together complicated programs. This book holds it together to the end. Its to bad that "An Introduction to Computer Science" is in the title as that might scare away people who think this is beyond the basics.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for beginners
This book provides the knowledge of programming in an easy to learn format. Good for beginning programmers, however it is very basic and does not cover any advanced topics in any way. The book is really good for a first-time programmer, however I would not recommend it as a Python resource for anybody with previous programming experience. One major drawback of the book is that it does not provide answers or any other form of solution to the chapter-end questions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful:The best CS1 textbook I've ever seen
I just wrapped up teaching a semester CS1 course using Zelle's book.I hope I never have to use another book besides this, because this text is simply fantastic.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent but you can do better
The text covers a wide range of topics but doesn't dive very deep. The font in the book is pretty large and there is copious amounts of whitespace that is wasted. It would be a decent read through for a beginner-to-immediate person but you will need to do much more to round out your Python knowledge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy read to get you up and running
I've been a big fan of the Core programming books, including the Core Java volumen 1/2 series. This book I found while skimming my local library and decided to give this little language a try.I understand that this is an "outdated" book that covers Python 2.0, the latest being 2.4.x as of this writing. However, the material covered in this book is still very valuable.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good book for beginning Python programmers
Definitely worth 5 stars. The book clearly explains its purpose, and the author makes his methodologies known in the beginning as to how he will approach teaching the language. His explanations are clear and concise, and it does not contradict the DOCS available on the Python web site. He's both humorous and informative, with a relaxed style of writing.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Rethinking Cookbooks
Normally, I'm not a big fan of cookbooks, I find them full of little patterns and quick solutions, but I don't have any desire to read them cover to cover to improve my design and implementation skills. The book Python Cookbook, 2nd Edition is quite different.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Programming Companion
I had the opportunity to skim through this book before I purchased it and found that it had several very practical, usable and understandable examples ("recipes"). It is a simple book that you can use as a reference and to learn how the "pros" create simple and elegant python code.

4-0 out of 5 stars More than a cookbook
String handling, money, time, dates. Email, network sockets, cgi, xml. The staples of the cookbook, and Python Cookbook certainly has these. However, interspersed throughout are chapters that seem to have come from at least one other completely different book, a more discursive rumination on Python programming in general. Each chapter begins with a mini essay from a Python luminary, and the discussion of each recipe is fairly extensive.

5-0 out of 5 stars From zero to Pythonista in less than 700 pages
First, one caveat: before reading this book, get a feeling for Python from the official tutorial, and some of the excellent tutorials and book available online (e.g., parts of "Dive into Python"). The greater the experience you have with other languages, the shorter the warm-up period. Then, buy this book. The chapters on the language description and OOP are models of clarity and brevity, in any book/reference and any language. All the other chapters are extremely useful too. This book complements perfectly the official library and language references, and covers almost everything you will ever need. It truly is the ideal reference book, and an incredible value for the money. I just hope that Alex Martelli will keep future editions below 700 pages while adding material on other GUI frameworks and PyPy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I needed
Well organized comprehensive desk reference. Can serve as an introduction to Python for a reader willing to do some heavy lifting.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent reference book for Python
Never got the 1st ed. so I got the 2nd ed. as soon as it came out last month (yes, I've been waiting for it :-D). I have to say I am not a Python expert but have been using C and other programming languages for years. I was looking for a book which can help me learn Python and also can be used as a reference. Now I am very happy I found it and it reaches my expectation. It's a solid book with 690+ pages full of everything I need to know about Python. Highly recommended ! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for Newbies to Python or OOP
As other reviewers have pointed out, this should not be your first Python book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Instant favorite
Very nice.. I had to buy this one after having read the whole PDF version...
5-0 out of 5 stars Polishing your Python
Dive into Python moves quickly into Objects and puts them to use in processing XML, HTML, and making RPC/SOAP calls. Many of the more powerful Python features are exposed like introspection, streams, unit testing, and generators. In addition, many gems are dropped along the way(classes as behaiving like dict...). DIPy is really a concise, intensive immersion into deep Python very skillfully done.

4-0 out of 5 stars Aging but excellent book
This book on Python is very complete and at the time it was published was better than any other book on Python. It is still an excellent book and has more information than any other Python book on the market.I have used the book as my major reference work for several years. For non-GUI programming you will find most of your questions answered in this book. The general tips on structure and theory of programming are particularly useful for people who do not have a formal education and degree in computer science.
2-0 out of 5 stars Better name it The Python Bible
Bibles, in the profane sense of the word, are huge books filled with clutter and not meaningful structure, which attempt to cover way more than they should. This is a clear example. It might be worth a quick look to a particular chapter, just to get a quick grasp of a particular area like XML, pygame, tkinter, etc. But definitely, this is not the book a beginner should use to learn the language, because as many said before, it seems to be a blind translation from their also crippled Java book. This reader, who cherished their C/C++ book couldn't be more dissappointed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointment
I purchased Deitel & Deitel's C++ How to Program book long ago, and found it to be comprehensive and extrordinarily helpful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good overview
This book is offers very broad and detailed information about python's network features. It is very good written with many source examples. The only thing with this book (like many other python books) is, that this book was published early 2003. So things lik "SOAP" or "Twisted" are only scratched. This book really shows the fundamental features of python networking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb
Clearly written with tons of practical examples.Mr. Goerzen has a very deep understanding of internet protocols, network programming, and the Python libraries. If you are ever going to use Python to send or receive emails, write web servers, or anything else you can think of that has to do with internet, you should not hesitate to buy this book, far and away the best Python network/internet book on the market.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book fills in an a gap
The author fills an important gap in writing this book. There are a lot of books about the programming language Python - good books and not so good books. These books surely are scratching the topic of network programming. But if you want to develop certain client-server applications in Python these books do not really help very much.

Good points:
5-0 out of 5 stars python essential reference is good
Filled with examples and a comprehensive index, it's a must-have
5-0 out of 5 stars The single most useful Python book I have found
This is an excellant book for the person who is acquainted with Python but needs to look up details or, especially, for someone with a good background in programming languages who wants to learn Python. Expertise in a single programming language isn't necessarily enough background - familiarity with different types of programming language and in particular with object-oriented programming is necessary.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good introduction to game coding
I know Python pretty well and I find that it is often an excellent way to quickly explore new programming concepts.Python is so powerful that you can quickly get a feel for the subject by coding a bit.At work, you may have to use a different language, but at least you will know the subject. That's how I got to understand XML and unit testing for example.A good book always helps the process though.
5-0 out of 5 stars I just love it ...
When I buy a book with source code I first run the examples and then I start reading, so I followed all the installation steps and every single example worked nicely so. The book is clear, concise, fun tu read and I do recommend it fully. If you are serious about writing your own online game and learning Python, get this one. It 's worth the money.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction - terrible support
I fully agree with an earlier reviewer of this book. I am only through to chapter 6 after getting it last week and it is a great introduction. However all the examples do rely on the author's own Python user interface library which does not work.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction
Python has become very popular recently, as a perusal of the list servers on the various programming languages attests to. The author of this book points to its widespread use in game programming, and a perusal of the contents of the book will reveal the influence of Python in this area. This reviewer has used Python in the context of Web application modeling, where it's conciseness and ease of use made it very helpful. This book was helpful in the actual learning of Python in order to carry out this effort, but this reviewer cannot speak to its power in game programming since he has never used it in that context. The book therefore was not read in its entirety, but only parts deemed useful for learning Python in order to carry out useful tasks. The book is advertised as one that is directed to readers who are `absolute beginners', so some of the contents will seem very elementary to those readers with programming experience. Readers who might be thinking of learning Python but want evidence of its success can go to the Python.org site to find examples of its application. This reviewer does not know of any cases where Python has been used for heavy-duty number crunching, but it looks as though this is in the realm of possibility.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Teaching Kids
I have been using this to teach my nephew Python. It is a great place to start as it gets very quickly to something visual to keep kids interested, while at the same time covering lots of useful ideas and concepts. If you want to show a beginner how quickly they can actually produce a real game with their own flavor on it, this is the book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Worth the price however not as good as others.
This book is definatley worth the price (18 bucks) however, if you want to get a solid foundation in Python, I would suggest skipping over this book entirely and reading; "Learning Python" by Mark Lutz and David Ascher published by: Oreilly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Suppliment to Numerical methods
When I first got ahold of this book I had just finished learning all the gory details of good numerical codes. But when developing tests for simple cases I found that development went way too slow, so someone suggested I learn Python. This book provides a great demonstration of how python can supplement your existing codes.Either by organizing the tests, formatting output, or just adding pretty interfaces.
3-0 out of 5 stars Python for Science Academics and Engineers, NOT programmers

I'd second most of the positive statements given by other reviewers. To boot - the author's voice is clear and pleasant. He shares his knowledge as it is, without dumbing it down or condescending. The index is very useful when you want to get in, get the information, and get back to work. This book is a great read for anyone learning or using Python seriously.

This book is not for everyone, but for "text processing", I know of nothing else that comes close; this book merits careful study.Note that "text processing" would include many web applications -- http is a text driven protocol.Do not be put off by the first chapter! It is the most abstract of any book I have read in decades. As the book says, you can skip it if it is a problem for you.As an illustration of how good this book is, I am now using regular expressions (selectively), and this was only possible with the help if this book!(If you do not even know what regular expressions are, you have not completed Text Processing 1.01.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good, somewhat advanced
This book is not for novice programmers. However, if you are an reasonably experienced programmer in Python, or any other language for that matter, this book will serve you very well.Text processing is probably the most common use for Python.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great reference - No index.
It would be worth 5 stars if there was an index.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Pocket Reference
I've not been too pleased with O'Reilly's Python material in general; it tends to be verbose and needlessly abstruse, but the Python Pocket Reference has proven itself an exception.
5-0 out of 5 stars Object achieved
While this is not the tool for learning Python, it is a valuable reference. It is amazing how much information that is packed into this small format. Toss it into your laptop bag for a quick reference, particularly since the third edition contains an index and covers Python 2.4.

2-0 out of 5 stars This book was not written by Perl programmers
A Perl novice picking this book up will be impressed. It's big, the prose is good, and it seems to have a command of the subject.
3-0 out of 5 stars Poor CD installation ...dies in the middle
I have only read the first chapter. Looks okay. However, I bought it with CD rom at original price (not from amazon) and I have such a hard time installing it. The Damn thing doesn't install on either of my win2k machines nor on Red hat 9 which I dual boot with one of my win2k.1-0 out of 5 stars I'm falling asleep
Because of my school, I own 4 of these hideous beasts. While the books contain a rich assortment of information on their particular subjects, they can be verbose in the extreme. Additionally, they seem to be poorly organized as some other reviewers have mentioned. It is very difficult to pick up these books and stay interested for more than 5 minutes. I've had to purchase other books to actually learn the languages and utilize the Deitel books as references. Some people may find these books to be fine; I suspect we all learn differently. If you enjoy books that get right to the point and with better organization, look elsewhere. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars strong image analysis
Guzdial teaches Python from the angle that you want to use it to easily manipulate various types of multimedia files. The files might contain images, sounds, video or even just plain text. This gives some of you extra motivation to learn the material.
5-0 out of 5 stars best python as a first language book so far
This book achieves both of the things you would want a Python as a first language book to do - it engages the beginner with things they might actually want to do, but doesn't fail to introduce the deeper concepts that are needed to come to appreciate the beauty and elegance of Python.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Guzdial presents concepts in simple form that is easy for beginners to understand. Actually entertaining to read. Worth every penny! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Books on graphical user interfaces (GUI) have an unfair advantage over typical computer books. Their contents have immediate positive impact on everything they touch, from the popularity of the underlying language to the careers of the developers they reach. Even mediocre GUI books have a beneficial impact.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on Pmw, not Tkinter.
It's a decent book for the experienced python programmer. Definitely not for the beginner. Try working with the "Python Programming" by Lutz before you tackle this book. The examples work for a system with python installed. The book does not cover the subject of standalone applications adequately even though there is supposedly a chapter.
3-0 out of 5 stars Tkinter shortchanged
Tkinter gets a too-brief treatment in Grayson's rush to get on to the subject of Pmw, the Python megawidget library, which seems to be the real subject of the book. If you're not going to work in Pmw, most of this book is useless.2-0 out of 5 stars Lots of info, poorly presented!
I find that the author is out of touch with how to present material. He's already tackling a 'calculator' application by page 22. Quite a jump! He should have consulted with someone more experienced in material presentation for someone learning and/or trying to tie concepts together.By starting with basics in the early going, it would have made understanding a little easier in the more complex examples. ...
