4-0 out of 5 stars Impressive!A wealth of key information and examples
I found this book to be one of the best references for Excel VBA development. The book is easy to understand and follow.Contains a large amount of examples that can be easily understood.Addresses many critical aspects of excel VBA development. Not too much was spent on forms/GUI development so you will have to look elsewhere if you into that. Also addresses interfacing Excel to databases using ADO as well as API programming which is critical for superusers to extend the power of excel without the limitation of data storage.Overall, the authors have a superb job and I consider this book to be an essential of my Excel VBA library!

3-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat disjointed
The first few chapters were a reasonable introduction to VBA for Excel, but after that, the examples, while being quite relevant and useful, seemed somewhat random, and did not strike me as being well supported by the text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book
I highly recommned this book for people writing Excel macros and VBA.Very well organized and nice snappy text keeps you engaged and going.Lots of good code too.It is an intermediate level text. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Sharepoint Developer Author
Scot Hillier is the best SharePoint author - period.
5-0 out of 5 stars Finally the answers
Sharepoint is so confusing when you get into the backend and this book answered almost all of my questions.Best book I've found. You can tell the author spent a lot of time digging around in the guts of SP and was probably as frustrated as most of us are trying to figure out how to do the simplest of things.Small book, high price.WORTH IT.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sharepoint Solutions for Advanced developers
"Advanced Sharepoint Services Solutions" is the second book by Scott Hiller, on Sharepoint Technologies. The first one was about building basic web parts. This book is for developers who have good knowledge of Sharepoint technologies. It is also assumed that you have already built some web parts and also have good understanding of .NET development. If you are looking for basic Sharepoint stuff, refer to his other book "Microsoft Sharepoint Building Office 2003 Solutions".

3-0 out of 5 stars How quickly things become obsolete
I bought this book almost the first day it became available, I think in November of last year, and loved it, despite numerous minor errata which I submitted but have not been published. It explains the structure of the RCP very well, as well as I have seen anywhere.Parts I, III, IV and V are excellent.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not For Web Developers
The book look like it has some promise. Unfortunately, it does not even touch those things that are important to web developers. There is no mention of setting up servers in eclipse, publishing, remote debugging, etc....
5-0 out of 5 stars Grateful
By way of background, I am an old VC++/MFC developer with a smattering of the .NET fiasco. I loved VC++ 6.0 but balk at Uncle Billie's ponderous extravaganza. I had also done some Java a while ago and wanted to get back into it. I found Eclipse to be a marvel of robustness and complexity. Despite my experience, after a couple of weeks diddling around with this attempting to make sense of my own Java "hello worlds", I figured I'd tumble for a couple of books. I purchased this book and Eclipse: Building Commercial Quality Plug-ins (Clayberg, Rubel) and (almost) all was revealed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining in it's own right...
The Stealing the Network series of books is in a catagory on it's own. Thrilling, entertaining, and fun to readjust scratches the surface of these books. I'll recommend this book to anybody, from joe sixpack who only uses the internet for games and pr0n to mitnick himself.
4-0 out of 5 stars Useful, readable illustration of computer security concepts
_Stealing the Network: How to Own the Box_ has 10 stories with a first person narrator, who is either an attacker, or in two cases, a defender. While the characterization isn't up to the standards of (good) commercial fiction* in most cases, it makes the technical medicine go down easier and gives a picture of who and why people do this stuff. That picture is useful in making an abstraction feel more like a concrete threat.
3-0 out of 5 stars Rough writing, but interesting
The writing needs some help -- I understand the newer books are edited by an actual writer to smooth out the prose a bit.

1-0 out of 5 stars mr. buyen Frontpage 2003 Book is a Failure
This book was a total failure and utterly devoid of structural instructions which would take an intermediate person from frontpage 2000 to 2003! It seem to be predicated with giving information in a BACKWARD fashion interwoven in such a way that left me more confused and dissatified! If I were to grade this book, I would give it a double triple FFF of the lowest order. How serious am I, well I intend to buy another frontpage book, and I am a senior citizen on SS and money is very scarce!
2-0 out of 5 stars jasper
A lot of text that's spread out and difficult to follow.Would have been nice to see more examples.eg, constructing drop down menus section provides a lot of text but few examples to carry you through to actually creating drop down menus.More how to and less theory would be helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative. If you develop web software it's a must-read
I recently finished reading How to Break Web Software: Functional and Security Testing of Web Applications and Web Services by Mike Andrews and James A. Whittaker. I, like many of you, develop web software for a living. I've always taken security seriously and occasionally sneered when I ran across examples of common mistakes. Having said that, this book was an eye opener for me.
5-0 out of 5 stars Technique after technique that really works
You can't really read a book like this. You read a few pages and prop the book up with a cookbook holder and start typing in the examples. There were a couple I could not duplicate, but almost everything worked as the authors said it would. Great book, or maybe it would be better to say, great tool!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent CSS Walkthrough Guide
This book is/has become my guide when something just isn't functioning properly or when I don't want to remember some hack. I quickly found myself learning all sorts of best practices, and tips that resulted in many hours shaved off my development time... all of this resulting from this very book.
4-0 out of 5 stars Tips, tricks and hacks
You have to already know and understand CSS. There is a small introduction, but after that, 101 "How do I..?" Perfect book if you are alredy familiar with the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
Very objective reference about CSS. The book has a small introduction on CSS's Structure and part immediately for practical examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than paper
A programming book in paper can be good, but an electronic version is much better. The ability to search, copy-and-paste makes this bookshelf the best perl reference you can have. All the pages are HTML, so you could put it in your intranet to share it with colleagues. Highly recommended.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad book to setup DBCP
This book gives a speedstart in getting high level architecture of Tomcat 5. Its discussion, even though not comprehensive, can make you can tell the difference between a valve, a service, an instance, and a server.
3-0 out of 5 stars A collection of articles
This book contains some good information. However, it's clear that the publisher merely solicited a bunch of articles and sort of threw them together without much in the way of an overarching design. The result is that you can find answers to many common Tomcat questions in this book, but others will go unanswered.

5-0 out of 5 stars Straightforward Approach to Learning a Simple Software.
I just created a website in Dreamweaver for a client with the end expectation that they would be able to use Contribute to edit their site without a lot of headache. Contribute proved to be absolutely simple to setup and use for this task after I read through this book.
1-0 out of 5 stars disappointing
I have in the past eagerly bought books from the Visual Quickstart Guide series, but this one is a terrible disappointment. It has all the weaknesses of the series (such as tiny font in the screen snapshots), and none of the strength.
5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recomended
If you are going to use Contribute for anything more than the very basics, I highly recommend this book.As of this writing it is the only book I know of about Contribute 3 that is really written for version 3 and not a version 2 book with new graphics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I highly recomend this book. I think it best serves those who already know the syntax of PHP, but it is a excellent book. I recomend either "Learning PHP" (The O'Reilly book) or "PHP for the World Wide Web : Visual QuickStart Guide" for a beginner. Both of these books will help you learn the syntax and concepts of PHP, but then it is best to move on to a book that gives practical examples, and this book excells at giving practical examples.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book for getting started with php and databases.

I bought this book to learn ASP.NET 2.0 and also to have a good reference for me on 2.0 as i'm not new on ASP.NET, even if you want to learn ASP.NET 2.0 from scratch, you should get this book because its a great value and a great piece of work!

5-0 out of 5 stars Quite simply the best JavaScript book outthere ...
... how do i know this?
4-0 out of 5 stars Solid overview but lacking in only a few areas
After plowing through the initial stage of immense frustration that most people trying to learn JavaScript do (and finding that there are very few good books on it), I stumbled across this. I was initially surprised by it's length - but don't be intimidated, it's chock full of good, useful content. If you have a little experience with JavaScript, this will take you to the next level and also serve as a very useful reference. I might not have grasped all the techniques at first but I generally had an idea of how to do something or where to look in the book when I sat down to put my thoughts to work. The only qualms I have are with the later chapters on things like client-server communication, JavaScript and XML, and Web Services. They seemed to lack a bit in the example and explanation section. Sure, I learned how to set up a cross-browser method of creating HTTP requests - but the process seemed lacking in the same care and devotion in explaining why I was or providing me with a solid example of how to use it. However, these chapters were still very useful and someone interested in these topics should use them as a springboard (just not the definitive guide). Overall, a solid book on a topic that has few. Kudos to Nicholas C. Zakas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Presentation
I think you can find several other JavaScript books that contain the same technical material as this book but this book's strength, in my opinion, is the author's delivery. The author does a very, very good job at explaining and this is what makes this book great. His explanations were very thorough and he seemed to anticipate my questions. I don't usually like the Wrox books but this one is a winner.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, informative, and more than just schematic after schematic
I expected this book to be much more technical than it was. Rather than a collection of schematics and wiring diagrams, DerEngel combines many personal stories with the results of his work. It's quite an interesting read, although I don't know if the book will make hardware hackers out of anyone. Some people may be able to hack their modems with the ready-to-use tools the author discusses, but most people probably aren't going to want to potentially destroy their modems by cracking open the case and messing with the circuit board components. Most of the discussion takes it for granted that the reader is already be familiar with basic electrical engineering and Radio Shack. The tools he uses are Windows programs, so unix users may need to find similar tools to follow along with the hacks.

4-0 out of 5 stars Abstraction, Specification & OOD explained well @ this book!
Percect book for a computer science student who must learn the fundemantal concepts of Object Oriented Design (OOD) in order to success and able to design and develop production quality software that are reliable, easy to mantain and modifiable.. It outlines the important steps for each chapter but the order of the chapters should be rearranged.

4-0 out of 5 stars A book more students should use
Barbara Liskov brings name recogntion the text. Respect comes for reasons, though, and this book shows many good reasons for respecting this educator and her co-author.5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
This is one of the best Computer Science books I have read. It is one of those books where every word is worth reading. And it is so concise. After reading this book, I understood clearly what exceptions were, how good design is done, etc. Also, the fundamental concepts like abstraction, decomposition, etc are so brilliantly described that you will never be hazy about them again. The most favourite topic of mine is the procedural SPECIFICATION part using the REQUIRES, MODIFIES, EFFECTS clauses. It really helped me see how procedures are specified.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to learn how to do JavaScript properly
Up until now, most JavaScript books I have seen have not really described how to be a good JavaScript programmer - most of them have lead by example (which is how many JavaScript programmers I know learnt JavaScript). Unfortunately learning JavaScript by simply viewing other people's code without understanding why it was written the way it was could also lead to learning by bad example.
4-0 out of 5 stars What a pleasant surprise!
What a pleasant surprise, amongst a development landscape full of JavaScript libraries to actually find: Beginning JavaScript with DOM Scripting and Ajax by Christian Heilmann. To state it boldly, this is the JavaScript book we have all been waiting for (though, John Resig and Jonathan Snook both have books coming). Why? Because the author actually uses modern object oriented (Object Literal) coding principles in the books examples. As well, the book has a progressive enhancement mindset, and explains the difference between several implementations of the same functionality, based on accessibility. All of this is done without the use of a JavaScript library! However, in a way the author provides his own little library of helper functions, which is certainly more digestible than Prototype, Dojo, YUI or jQuery. The author even dedicates the last chapter to third-party examples, which demonstrates the usage of the YUI and jQuery JavaScript libraries.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good beginners book
JavaScript has had an up-and-down reputation as a developer's tool with promising and creative concepts followed by problems with browser problems and cross-platform variations and a whole host of other problems. But that situation has changed to a great extent due to better browser support, better standards, and more consistent performance across browsers.Combine that with the recent fascination with creative uses of the Ajax techniques and it seems that everyone is getting onto the bandwagon.
