5-0 out of 5 stars Sams Teach Yourself HTML and CSS in 24 Hours
Quite simply this book demistifies the process behind creating web pages. I had no idea how the system worked and I now I do. Just follow the steps as they are set out and you can have a page done in under 2 hours.

5-0 out of 5 stars Over 400 dog-ears in a 486 page book
You know a book is good when you dog-ear each page that contains something important, and this book is almost all dog-ears.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to start with and learn from.
This book packs a TON of helpful information in 500+ pages, and does it in a way that anyone can learn from. The tutorial-like 1 hour lessons are perfect: 1. The book gives you a practical example to learn from, 2. They do not simply give you step-by-step instructions on how to the example and call it a lesson. The author explains everything he is doing so you can readily apply it to what you are working on for your site. 3. This author does a good job of "mind-reading" in that as you're looking at an example, he anticipates the parts that will look confusing to someone who does not know this material and lets you know what's going on.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nine Stars
I got this book for a class, taught by Lagerstrom, and loved it.It does a great job explaining XHTML and JavaScript.I had never been exposed to any type of programming, but this book made it simple. When I originally bought the book, I was sharing it with two other people. However, we all found it so helpful that we had to each buy our own to keep it on the shelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another book I'll be adding to my shelf.
Wow. Very few programming books I've read do much for me. Most of them are of no more use than a reference manual. But this book....this book is different. After just an hour of reading, I now understand the basics of JavaScript. The book does a great job explaining it. The other topic this book covers is XHTML, the successor to HTML. I admire the author's constant reminders to remain standards-complient in XHTML. Good job. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good intro to XHTML
Don't even bother learning HTML 4 - XHTML will replace it eventually so you might as well go with the wave of the future.2-0 out of 5 stars Look Elsewhere
Slap "for dummies" on a book and you will get the dummies to buy it. :) This book just wears you out with all the extra chit-chat that really never gets to the point. I have read a few dummies books for programming languages and they are really not all that good because you can buy more comprehensive books that cover everything.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for Your Average Dummy
While this book is written in plain English and follows the usual Dummies model it is not a start-from-scratch tutorial. The author does not state this explicitly but in order to use this book effectively (because of the way it is written) you really need to have HTML under your belt before you take on XHTML.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Resource on CSS
I found this book to be helpful in learning some of the basics of CSS.Perhaps, like you, I googled my way around online trying to find solutions to problems that I was encountering.I liked that this book had many of the solutions already written out in the book that I was having problems with.I have been familiar with HTML, but I was late in adding CSS to my websites.I know that there are large benefits with using CSS, and it makes your life eaiser, but I found learning CSS from scratch to be somewhat daunting. From the novice perspective I found this book to be exactly what I needed. There are larger books out there, but I really needed just the basics.
5-0 out of 5 stars CSS Clearly Explained
I highly recommend this book. I am not a specialist in web design, but did have a certification in HTML/XHTML before reading it, so I had some background. Major topics are Web Typography, Page Elements, Links and Navigation, Lists, Forms, Tables, Page Layouts, Print-Friendly functions, Hacks/Workarounds and miscellaneous designing issues.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good Reference for All Levels of CSS Developer
I've recently had the pleasure of reading CSS Cookbook by Christopher Schmitt, published by O'Reilly (the people who put animal pictures on their tech books - seems silly, but now you know exactly who I mean, don't you?). While I do not recommend it as a beginner's guide to CSS, I recommend it for the bookshelf of current CSS developers, or perhaps if you have a basic knowledge of CSS (maybe you use it control fonts and colors, and that's about it) and would like to implement even more of your design with CSS.

5-0 out of 5 stars The First Step to Learn about Web Design
If you want to learn about web design, the first step is learning HTML and XHTML. The last official version of HTML (4.1) was released in 1999. In January, 2000, the W3C release XHTML. HTML and XHTML are very similar; XHTML uses the stricter syntax of XML.
5-0 out of 5 stars I absolutely love this book!
Using this book is the way all aspiring web designers or web developers should begin their journey.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Hands-On Approach!
This book will get you started on coding web pages using XHTML and CSS, using CSS for page layout, promoting web pages, introduce using Flash and Java applets, and give you an overview of e-commerce. A great book for a beginner web developer. We use this in a community college course for both online and face-to-face classes. The students really like the hands-on approach with exercises and case studies. There is a CD with extra tutorials and references, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great coverage of webaccessibility standards!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great starting point
I didn't know any significant HTML prior to using this book. This book is a great starting point and will give anyone enough background to put up a pretty good page. I feel like I have gotten a good grasp of HTML from this book and now feel like I should branch out into Javascript to develop my pages further.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book.
I have been using a canned program to manage my company's web site, but I wasn't always able to do fine tune the pages the way I wished. So I decided to teach myself HTML. Working through this book, I was able to learn step by step how to design pages and manipulate the images and text. The book is very clear and concise and the exercises the author gives at the end of every chapter are extremely useful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Up-To-Date Now - Thank you.
Having been out of web Development for a couple years, I needed confidence that my basic understanding was up to speed. This book HTML and XHTML in 24 hours, brought me up to date rather quickly. It provided the foundation that I needed both to build some basic web application prototypes, and to be able to begin reading more specialized books on Web Development.Specifically books on CSS. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars How to Do Everything with HTML & XHTML
Very nicely written. Had no problem following the material. Very easy to understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!!!
For a first book on this topic I found the depth of coverage and pace to be perfect. Very easy painless coverage of topic.
3-0 out of 5 stars for beginners?
i think this book is not detailed enough, as compared with its titile"how to do everything with html&xhtml".After i finishedreading this book, i started to build my web site. But, the problem is i don't know what attributes and values i can use within style sheets. and the effort to understand all that stuff is really frustrating. And i am confused about whether the attribute is from html or xhtml, can i use them? the book don't provide a list of all the stuff with its usage and possible values, attributes as a reference, and the pdf file i downloaded from the author's web site is useless because most of them is listed in the book and they are just not detailed enough, it is just a book for beginners and it should be marked as level 1. ... The examples in the book and the companion web-site make step by step learning simple and clear. I went from knowing nothing about creating a website to launching one in one week, using no other references. This book is a must-read for anyone getting started on the web. This is a concise, fact and example-packed, logical guide to getting up and running - a keeper for sure!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but perhaps too extensive
The didactic work is perfect the author is really expert in the subject and the expression is very didactic the examples are very well selected.

This is a pretty good book for learning HTML and XHTML. It's very basic, and perfect for a beginner. Most codes are explained thoroughly, however, sometimes the author just writes a code to do a job and doesnt explain how it works or how exactly to use it.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good reference on some things
I am a first year student at Oklahoma State University and had been struggling with some of the CSS and web-design code. I found this book in my school;s bookstore and tried it. I immediately understood about 98% of it. the other 2%, I haven't leanred from my professor yet. The very helpful thing, was that they would show you a picture of a finished web page and instead of saying "try to make this" without much info like my other books, this one show's you the code. Every letter. My Site is developing phenominally because of a large part to this reference. The only reason it's not 5, is because I haven't learned some of the stuff in the back chapters yet.

2-0 out of 5 stars Confusing, not enough info
I know HTML pretty well but CSS not at all. I figured I'd get this book to teach myself CSS and since it had HTML in the title I thought it would teach the integration of both to create websites.
5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I needed - not too much, not too little
This book is perfect for my needs. I have a background in graphic design, and have created some web sites in Adobe GoLive. GoLive writes the code for you, so you don't need to know how to do it "by hand." But now the newest version of GoLive is based on CSS, so although I had been dabbling in it, I need to learn a lot more. Plus, sometimes you need to look into the code to get something to work or to understand what is happening.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Impressed
I am VERY disappointed with this book.It was the required reading for a barnesandnoble.com online class, so I mistakenly figured it would be a good book.
2-0 out of 5 stars HTML: Your Visual Blueprint
This book has good information, but is poorly organized. The "lessons" are not organized in a logical way.
2-0 out of 5 stars Could have done so much better.
I bought this book because I wanted to learn CSS and, apart from this being the only book in my local store that covered CSS, I thought learning HTML and XHTML would be a bonus. The fact that the book covers the whole lot is a very good idea, the execution, however, leaves much to be desired.
