5-0 out of 5 stars my favorite reference
I really like this book. it not only helps answer thing but makes suggestion and gives real world scenerios at end of a chapter. I use it mostly for a reference tool as chapters 1-11 pertain to CR XI report creation part, which is what I need refresh on the most. I do wish there was a good tool book that gave more on crystal syntax if anyone knows please email me, but this book helps get me thinking on the right track.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Solid Reference - But Poorly Organized
This is a solid book and a worthwhile reference.Unfortunately, the content organization is somewhat confusing--and the sheer size of the book makes it fairly difficult to find what you're looking for.
3-0 out of 5 stars Did not answer my question.
I purchased this book with the hope of figuring out how to produce a table of contents. Since database publishing tools are no longer produced I was trying reproduce the effect in Crystal Reports. I have 18 years experience using the Oracle Reporting tools and know how to produce what I need, however Oracle will no longer be supporting it's report toolset. There is an article on the Business Objects knowledge base on how to do this but it is written for SQL Sever and not Oracle. I was hoping that this book would go into this real world situation, it does not. I have also gone to the book's web site and asked for help, but no reply after 2 weeks.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do not use!
It is full of errors. The explanations are difficult to follow. There are few highlights in the text which makes scanning for a quick review impossible. There is no chapter summary. The book presumes a thourough knowledge of Excel which many students do not have. Stay away!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not as described
Previous reviews inspired me for the purchase. This book is NOT MBA material. I would rate it at Business 101 book. Most spreadsheet models are basically the same using the SOLVER function in excel. There are better tutorials online.

5-0 out of 5 stars Management Science made understandable
By incorporating Microsoft Excel spreadsheet examples of the problems, the authors have managed to make self-study management science possible. I'm absolutely convinced this is the best way to learn MS.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good overall resource but has some drawbacks
I decided that January 1, 2005 was a good time to start using Quickbooks Pro for my small business. I'd been using MYOB FirstEdge, but found it was rather limited in some areas. Whenever I think about starting to use new software, I browse around on Amazon for a good book on the package in question. This book stood out as probably a good resource and I was not far wrong. However, I have a couple of complaints. Firstly, the author's instructions on how to enter beginning balances is vague at best. Secondly, her discussion of complex issues such as how to set up Quickbooks for sales tax recording and reporting, is somewhat lacking. The book that came with the software actually does a better job at explaining Quickbooks' rather quirky method of sales tax accounting.
5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Treatise on QuickBooks Pro 2004
Ms. Ivens writes clearly, properly, and intelligently on QuickBooks software. The screen shots are legible, unlike those in some other computer books. The index is detailed, and thus useful.I counted only two typos in the 572 pages.
2-0 out of 5 stars Help pages online - not a guide!
I agree with the guy who said it's not a guide. Don't buy if you are confused by Quickbooks interface and plan to learn how to use it properly from financial point of view. To get the guide, simply print out the help pages.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fundamental Olap principles
I was impressed by the quality of this book; this is probably the most complete book on OLAP theory and is a fundamental reading for professionals involved in the design of olap systems. In most cases it gives all the details and information needed to master this technology. It also contains some practical examples that are very useful to see how the theory can be applied in the real world.4-0 out of 5 stars Good OLAP Methodology
OLAP is a somewhat arcane corner of the IT universe and this book is a good guide to it for information and business professionals. It covers the basics well and provides decent exaples to get you going.5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for anybody involved in Olap design
A book which gives you a comprehensive theoretical foundation together with useful, pratical techniques to design Olap solutions.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but problematic....
I just passed my 70-271 exam and I do believe this book was an important factor in my score. However this book is problematic.
2-0 out of 5 stars Don't use this book as a primary study guide
There's a lot of unnecessary info in this book that you won't even see on the exam. The practice questions in the book are way too wordy and confusing.Exam Cram has helped me in the past, but not this time.

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book, it's awful.
I believe my email to the editor explains it all.I have copied and pasted it below.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners
I understand a lot about project management, but being a developer I had never learned to really use MS Project. I picked up this book and followed it from beginning to end, using the accompanying CD-ROM. I learned more about Project in the few hours it took to go through the book than I thought I would.5-0 out of 5 stars All you need for a good start
First of all, this book is for beginners to MS Project. You can read this book chapter by chapter, or you can pick chapters to study since there is no referencing for past chapters or following chapters. 5-0 out of 5 stars Teach yourself!
This is a great book to teach yourself more than you ever wanted to know on Microsoft Project 2000.This book takes you through STEP BY STEP on how to use Microsoft Project and gives you great samples on the enclosed CD.If only the instructors in school would have made it this easy!Very easy to follow and use.Highly Recommended. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars DDC Learning Materials Continue The Tradition Of Excellence
DDC Learning Microsoft Office XP is an excelent book for use by individuals who wish to learn without attending formal class sessions or enrolling in an online course.Of course, the book is also excellent for students enrolled in Secondary Education classes or Adult Education classes. The books published by DDC provide guides to use either menu commands or keyboard commands.Electronic files are provided for all lessons to limit the amount of keyboarding required so that the student concentrates on learning.I use the materials for my personal learning when I wish to quickly get up and running with a software application.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book from Beginners to Advanced Office

4-0 out of 5 stars Provides a solid overview of JDE
The book provides a great background for the JDE newcomer. The book has sections that are good for the executive sponsor and transitions into detail good for those actually integrating. While not something that would ensure a successful implementation, the book covers a significant number of key issues and risks that should help companies through the implementation process.

3-0 out of 5 stars Acceptable introductory textbook
I was frankly expecting more of this book. The author superficially covers the basics of the OneWorld software architecture and the very basic of navigation and usage.Being titled "Implementing", I was expecting to find real life information on hardware sizing, what to do and not to do to successfully implement the software. There was not much more than what you could find in J.D.Edwards documentation and available Knowledge Garden papers. Also, anybody who has worked with this software knows that there is still a lot to do to make it as reliable as marketing hype pretend it to be.One would expect some objectivity from a third party, as good as the software really is.Wise advices like waiting for implementing ESU and service pack, making sure you have the appropriate skills around to do an implementation are slipped away from the content. If you have not worked with OneWorld before, and are planning to learn and implement the software, this is an acceptable introductory textbook. However, if you are looking for more in-depth coverage of real life issues with this software, you will have to look some place else. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Best book on the market for Podcasting
Michael Geoghegan and Dan Klass have done a great job in this 240 page book on podcasting. A great book for any podcaster. They do a good job of taking you through all of the steps necessary to learning podcasting. The book runs the gamut of the steps you'll need to preparing your podcast, to recording and subsequently publishing your podcast on the web.The book is easy to follow and has lots of links to websites for additional reference. Overall the best book on the market for podcasting.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Very In-Depth, Not a lot of code examples
I went out and purchased this book based on some good reviews here at Amazon. I was really unimpressed with it. It is much less a primer on how to program "AI" types of apps with .NET, and much more a manual of how to use Microsoft applications like their speech services and data mining.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great primer book on Microsoft technologies for Intelligent Apps
Building Intelligent .NET Applications is an excellent primer book into the world of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the business world, specifically related to Microsoft technologies.
2-0 out of 5 stars A Disappointing Book
I recently purchased this book on Amazon. As an experienced .NET software developer, I am always keen on books that will expand my knowledge base in this area, and AI has been a particular interest of mine lately.Having read through much of the book, I have found it very disappointing.I would sum it up as a very shallow introduction to AI topics (often referred to as "Narrow AI") such as Data Mining. This book is more a manual on how to use Microsoft technologies, and does not include anywhere near the depth or practical examples needed on the subjects presented.I have personally found better info online. 4-0 out of 5 stars how to automatically extract an ontology?
The book shows progress in how ontologies are defined from various data sets. The subject is a natural field of artificial intelligence, in attempting to automated this filling of an ontology. Various example ontologies are presented, along with the markup languages like RDF and OWL in which these are expressed. The progress is visible, inasmuch as just a few years ago, these languages were devised. Now we see non-trivial ontology constructions using them. Good.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent survey book on Ontology
The book is well organized in introducing the subject in a coherent manner and weaving in all important criteria of ontology together. I especially like to read the comparison of different languagees in light of knowlege represenation and knowlege reasoing. The book is great in terms of getting a broad view (survey) and is also great as a reference. In many pages, there is so much information packed in each sentences.Great book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good literature review of current developments
The word `ontology' is usually associated with philosophical speculation on the reality of things, and if one checks the literature on philosophy one will find a diverse number of opinions on this reality. Engineers and scientists typically view philosophical musings on any topic as being impractical, and indulging oneself in these musings will cause one to lose sight of the topic or problem at hand. Rather than simplify the problem and make it understandable, philosophy tends in most cases to complicate it by endless debate on definitions and the use of sophisticated rhetoric that seems to have no bearing on the problem at hand. The conceptual spaces generated by these debates can become gigantic and therefore unwieldy, thus making the problem appear more complex than it actually is.

4-0 out of 5 stars how to reason about knowledge
Brachman and Levesque describe what may be considered the foundations of artificial intelligence. They look at how to represent knowledge. As far more than just a passive collection of facts. The "Reasoning" in the book's title is the important aspect of that representation. You can understand how to apply reasoning in a logical and systematic manner.
5-0 out of 5 stars Don't have to be a math buff to understand
I came across this book looking for a text that would explain the context of First Order Logic, why it is used for so many knowledge representation problems, how it is used to solve them, and its limitations.I must say that this is far and away the best book I've found to answer these questions. If you search around a little at the competition, you will find much of the text quickly turning to mathematical proofs and deductions in their explanations. While this is of course necessary and helpful, it doesn't (for me) really give an idea of how and why these methods are used practically. You can tell that these authors spent some time on ensuring consistency and fluency of the writing, which I find so very helpful.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book is an Eye-Opener!
I love this book- It is a comprehensive introduction into knowledge representation, with enough detail to create your own knowledge representation programs.
