3-0 out of 5 stars If you are a newbie
For someone who wants to learn dreamweavermx fast and easy...this is not the book for you. This is just too simplistic. I recommend How to Do Everything with dreamweaverMX.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what you need
Dreamweaver is a wonderful program, but there is so much to learn about it, especially with so many new additions to the program.Idiot's guide does their usual - make it easy to learn guide and helps you follow step by step how to use Dreamweaver, how to use it in conjunction to your websites, in simply, easy to follow terms, with plenty of pictures so you can go step by step.5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for
I created my first and onlyweb site back in the days when all browsers were Netscape, all graphics jpg or gif, all coding html and all backgrounds medium gray. I was determined to design my own site and not be seduced by simplistic, pre-packaged templates, but I was intimidated by the possibility of getting buried under too much complex instruction. Macromedia's Dreamweaver and David Karlins Complete Idiot's Guide to Dreamwewaver MX sounded like just the ticket.I was not disappointed.David Karlins writes in an often humorous style that puts him right there with you, anticipating your next question or guiding you deftly around the pitfalls and frustrations. This book is well written and informative. It is obvious that Mr. Karlins has a great deal of experience teaching the subject and loves to teach. A bonus that I hadn't expected was the fast and helpful email responses from the author on those few occasions I did get in a corner.I highly recommend this book, and not just for the beginner. It's just plain fun to read and use. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Moving forward
While this book is about using Microsofts Project 2003 Software it contains a wealth of information about leadership and business and street smarts of managing yourself. Many times in life we get so involved we "can't see the forest because of the trees". Boged down in details we lose sight of the big picture. Ron provides clarity that can help anyone move forward with laser like effeciency, if they want. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to live larger, and be more successful. Lee Holden

When folks set out to create a database, they often use Microsoft Access as their development tool simply because it's right there on their computers. Despite its membership in the Microsoft Office family, Access can quickly overwhelm the user with its strange terminology and complicated interface. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners
I would recommend this book for "computer literate" folks who are new to Microsoft Access. The book covers all/most of the tasks beginners would want to accomplish using a personal database application.I was able to create a simple database (one table) with the functionality - forms, queries, reports - I needed over a single weekend using this book. The data was imported from an Excel spreadsheet which I had been using for reports. The Access migration now gives me better (and easier to manage) functionality than I got with the spreadsheet.

This book is hillarious for it's glaring errors. As the author obviously knows a great deal about his subject, I can only assume the editor/s is/are complete idiots.5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners!

4-0 out of 5 stars Extremely basic
This book is extremely basic, so it's perfect for first-timers who have never written in any program, including HTML.There's much more you can learn about web page design, especially when going into XML, but this is a great start to that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great text for those with no html knowledge at all...
Other reviewers have noted that the text is out of date, anything several years old in the field of computers is ancient. However, the building blocks that the author lays out here are still in use.The general idea behind HTML and what a browser does when it comes across the HTML code on a web server is still the same. For someone that knows absolutely nothing about designing a web page, this is a very good beginner book.It starts very simply and builds on each concept that came before it.The text is laid out in a very easy to understand manner and allows the reader to develop a firm foundation of the basic concepts of HTML.
2-0 out of 5 stars did you note the publishing date??
Answer: 2002. That should be a "caution" for buying this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars a fantastic overview of all the major office programs
I have to admit that I'm becoming addicted to the idiot's guides.Contrary to their title, they help experts and idiots alike. For thenovice, most of this material may be new, but even the expert can pick upsome great tips. The book is divided into the major office programs: Word, Outlook, Access, Powerpoint and Excel.Though individual books focusin more detail on each of these programs, there is certainly enoughinformation here to do the majority of projects that most people would beinclined to do.The great thing about these guides is that you willsuddenly find yourself unable to unlock a much higher potential of thesepowerful programs, particularly in Excel. The chapter on Excel is veryeasy to follow and teaches you how to do the most common formulas likeautosum.Even regular Word users will perfect the art of making tables, even for such common items as resumes. The format is extremely readableand easy to follow.I find that these guides only take a few hours toread, but the effects last for months.Highly recommended for anyone whowants a quick refresher course on the most common features of these officeprograms. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Beginning Book
Ogletree's book on creating your own CD's is concise and informative. It easily gets anyone creating their own CD's in no time, even those sometimes intimidated by or not as familiar with computers.Appropriately falling into the Idiots guide series, the book only covers, for the most part, the basics of CD burning. The publisher should have Mr. Ogletree do a more detailed book, perhaps in their "Practical" series, that goes into more technical detail about CD's, their history, etc.I didn't expect to see that in an Idiots guide, but it would be useful information for an higher level book. All in all, this is a nice and helpful beginning book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Why Fumble When You Can Read It in Detail?
There are few things as satisfying and fun to the videographer as making professional movies - videos that you actually want to watch a second time or more - and Apple's iMovie software is THE tool to do just that. You get superb results from an inexpensive piece of software - IF you can use it. While the program is exceptionally simple, there is only an on screen "Help Menu," and we all know how those work: everything but the question you need answered, it seems.Into the void has rushed Brad Miser with wit and wisdom, and with all the answers and instruction you need and then some. His Idiot's Guide is a marvelous introduction to video/movie making, and he walks you through composition, editing, mixing, enhancing, titling, effects, and stuff you never thought possible when you bought that video camera (or even thought about buying it). Miser is one of those very few authors that are effectively "high tech" and "high touch," he writes with clarity, and with an obvious love of his subject. If Amazon would allow it, I'd give this six stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars One idiot's review of The Complete Idiot's Guide to iMovie2
iMovie2 does not come with an instruction book, andthe iMac booklet helps precious little, so I was pleased to find Brad Miser's Idiot Guide (which is a series I like anyway). The book is both imformative and insightful, plus a lot of fun to read.It got me going with iMovie in very short order, and when I emailed Mr. Miser to clarify a point, I got a prompt and effective answer.Highly recommended. ... QuickBooks 99 is a royal pain to use, so I bought this book to learn how to use it.The author does a good job of explaining how to use the software (and I really like the way QuickBooks commands are colored inorange), but unfortunately she forgets that the reader is a "completedummy" who also needs a crash course on accounting. There is somebasic information, but not enough to help you understand why you are usinga particular function of QB to do something.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Maybe I'm not smart enough
I warn you this review finds me in a bad mood.5-0 out of 5 stars A great start, but great for intermediate users, too
I got this book from the library three times for my sister, who is a beginning computer user, but as we worked through a lot of the information, I found myself saying, "Wow, I didn't know how to do that!" several times. So I'm finally breaking down and just BUYING one!It always amazes me how many features of Word we aren't even aware of.I know it has really helped her get "unstuck" without calling me.It's always great to be able to figure it out on your own, and this book helps you to do just that.I would, however, recommend one of those laminated cheat sheets available at office supply stores. The cheat sheets at the front of the book are a little too simple.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great newbie guide to Linux/Unix variants/Unix like OSes
XFree86 version 3.3.4 (free Open Source version of X Window System version 11) that came on the cd for some odd reason didn't work on my computer with a Sis 5597/5598 using either Lizard or LISA and kept freezing it. The book's first chapter does a very good job of describing the process of inventorying hardware, checking hardware compatibility, repartitioning your hard drive using Fips, if necessary, explaining the difference between primary, extended, and logical partitions, taking you step by step through a Lizard install with plenty of pictures, and explaining what happens at each stage of the install process. The second chapter introduces you to the KDE desktop. The appendix at the end of the books shows you how to install using LISA (text based installer), though if you want to try LISA make sure to go to Caldera's hardware compatibility list at www.caldera.com/support/hardware/2.3/. If you choose to install that way all modules for hardware must be loaded manually and it may be a long process, you've been warned. Unfortunately sometimes hardware compatibility issues may pop up with Lizard so it's good to know how to do it just in case Lizard doesn't work. I haven't finished this book yet, but it's very interesting and in my opinion worth the read. Overall a good book and the cheapest I was able to find.Be wary of the fact that OpenLinux 2.3 may not work with the latest hardware.Other than that your install should go quite smoothly and I'd say the older the hardware you use the better the chances of your being successful (I'd recommend a Pentium 233 with MMX or PII 300 or equivalent or earlier). Please note that my review only applies to the Second Edition of this book (not the First Edition).

Ok, If you are a windoze user and you want to upgrade to Linux, START here.Buy a copy of Red Hat 6.2, this book, and a more advanced book, like Learning Red Hat Visually (Includes a copy of Red Hat 6.2).2-0 out of 5 stars Information for beginners only
If you know nothing about Linux, little about computers and want info on the caldera distribution then this book is an okay starter. But it will not give you enough details to be the source you rely on whenrunning/installingLinux. Not quite three months after purchasing, my copyof the Idiot's Guide looks brand new while my O'Reilly Linux books arepainfully dog-eared. ... Read more

There is little, if any, information in this book that can't be found in the results from one simple Google search! Don't waste your money on this toilet paper, unless you really are an idiot!

1-0 out of 5 stars Worth Less Than Nothing
While the book offers some interesting info on the physical media, it covers primarily a couple software packages that the author doesn't even seem to think are really great. It really doesn't present anything that you won't get with the instruction manuals with the hardware/software you buy for burning a CD or DVD.It's "worth less than nothing" because it costs time and postage to return the book.
