1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the paper...
...the paper it was printed on.This was discounted, I snatched it up without a thought or look inside. What a mistake. Even at this price it was one of the worst computer book purchases I have ever made. How can this book be called a complete reference when it does not even refer to PST file anywhere in the table of contents, index...or anywhere in the book that I could find!!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Well written, thorough, accurate and readable
. . . a very challenging combination.I recommend this for everyone developing an e-mail application.Every standard that it covers is done in a thorough fashion. It is much more readable and comprehensible than the RFCs themselves, but no less accurate. The author obviously speaks from experience when writing about specific traps, and how the protocols are used in the real world.

4-0 out of 5 stars task-oriented, well-written
If you are looking for a task-oriented, well-written book that covers every aspect of Microsoft's Outlook 2003, this is the book for you. The author is clearly comfortable with technical material but is able to communicate this material to a non-technical reader. The book is very thorough and provides notes, cautions, tips, and shortcuts throughout. Lots of useful information such as dealing with junk e-mail and spam. I recommend this book highly.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth buying
This book doesn't offer much that you can't find in Outlook's Help system, it's poorly organized, and it isn't written well. You can almost hear the sleepy author's fingers clattering on the keyboard as he hurries to meet his deadline and get this book finished. Whether readers can understand a word didn't rank high on the author's priority list. Nothing is explained well. Nowhere does he give you any advice about how to make Outlook easier to use.

1-0 out of 5 stars Cornucopia of Useless Information
I don't know how Scott Scholl did it but I've had this book on my reference shelf for about three months now and have looked in it when I needed to do something to administer Exchange Server 2003 probably 15 times.I am zero for a lifetime at ever finding anything of practical use.I am just amazed at how little useful information (for me, I admit) I can find in it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too little for too much
Disappointing book. A sort of technical gossip about Exchange. Here and there can find some useful hints, but it lacks the basic information about how Exchange 2003 works, how messages are flowing. 5-0 out of 5 stars Wow, what a good read!
I typically don't post reviews, but I really felt I should post one for this book.I am in complete agreement with the folks who reviewed this before me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Writing Effective E-Policies Is a Team Effort
Does your company or organization have a policy that covers writing style in electronic communications? Does your company or organization have cyberinsurance to cover losses attributed to errors or employee misbehavior using your e-mail systems? Does your company or organization offer netiquette training for employees and managers? These are topics that many do not think of but should and that are covered in detail in The ePolicy Handbook: Designing and Implementing Effective E-Mail, Internet and Software Policies by Nancy Flynn (256 pages ; The American Management Association, 2001). Though this book is a few years old, it is worthwhile for Human Resource managers and anyone else involved in the development of ePolicies for their company organization.
5-0 out of 5 stars From workplace piracy to e-theft insurance
This key to designing and implementing email and software policies in a company structure provides business owners and managers with important information on how to produce clear policies which regulate computer use. From workplace piracy to e-theft insurance, Nancy Flynn's The ePolicy Handbook covers a wide range of topics and concerns.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cuts down on time to produce an effective e-policy
This book covers all of the key points and provides some excellent topics to include in a corporate e-policy.The goal of this book is to aid you in developing a policy that will provide clear, enforceable guidelines to your employees in the acceptable use of the Internet and electronic mail, and to protect your company's image.Read more

Editorial Review

Long ago, unsolicited commercial email graduated from annoyance to serious problem. The problem won't go away until the nature of electronic mail changes (to include a per-message fee, for example), which means that there's lots of work for administrators in managing spam and keeping its load off their networks. That's what Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Practical Information and Advice To Help Tame Spam
There is no question that spam is a potential threat to the effectiveness of email as a form of communication and is at the very least an annoyance to anyone who uses email. To that end, a book like this contains valuable advice and information for virtually anyone. The detailed coverage of such a wide variety of tools and techniques- even covering tools for different operating systems and different levels of the network such as client and server- provides a comprehensive "tool kit" for the reader to employ in fighting spam.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good description of state of art in 2003
The book was written around the end of 2003, and gives an excellent technical description of the main antispam techniques being used by ISPs, companies and individuals. 5-0 out of 5 stars It has the ring of experience.
How do you stop SPAM? There are four main techniques: blacklist subscription,server-based, client-based, gateway-based.Each of these is completely covered, not only as a "do this" approach, but with an explanation of what each approach is trying to do.In addition, the CD included with the book, instead of having a bunch of mostly useless stuff, includes several anti-spam software packages that the authors have found useful in protecting their own organizations from SPAM.These are being distributed under the GNU license, so you are free to use them on your own system.Excellent book! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Childish. Why reward a crook?
Well, the author is clearly a Chickenboner - the book is full of grammatical errors, especially toward the end. It also has major factual errors, as other reviewers have pointed out. (I skimmed it at the local library.)Also, he's clearly a criminal, since spamming is illegal in most jurisdictions, so I give it 1 star.

3-0 out of 5 stars If Only He Did Not Play So Fast and Loose With facts
The Vikings from Monty Python's Flying Circus love SPAM so much, that the mere mention of the word has them break out in song, singing "Spam! Lovely spam! Lovely spam!". For e-mail users, there are not many who would give the same response. We get it. We despise it. We wonder how many times we will get the same messages over and over again. But do we truly understand the machinations behind the scenes of the SPAM industry? It is this fundamental question that drives "Inside the SPAM Cartel: Trade Secrets From The Dark Side" (Spammer X, Jeffrey Posluns, Technical Editor, Syngress Press, 2004, 413 Pages). Written by an insider, the book provides detailed information and background but at times falters because of some very strongly stated opinions and facts that are just plain incorrect, as well as a very significant omission.
3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting read as long as you don't throw it out the window
This book is basically 'how to spam' for newbies; or 'how to analyze spam', if you prefer. In any case, it's for technical users. If you are looking for a novel, check "Spam Kings" instead.

3-0 out of 5 stars why do you need this book?
Writer is very easy to learn, especially if you have already been using some other word formatting package. A lot of care went into the design of Writer. So that you don't have to be a technical person in order to quickly learn it.
5-0 out of 5 stars As an expert user, I still learned a lot
I have used OpenOffice.org since before it was called OpenOffice.org and I was surprised at how much I learned when I read this book. Most of the sections stand alone, which means that you can read the sections that interest you at the moment.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent tool for advanced documentation
Jean Hollis did a good job of explaining how to do certain advanced things like styles and creating tables of contents.

2-0 out of 5 stars OK book but not enought to pass...
Material is good but is missing stuff.Cisco should be ashamed with the ammount of typos.Check out the typos here: http://www.ciscopress.com/title/1587051486#Without the typos I would have given it a 3 maybe 4 stars.Needs to be updated.

2-0 out of 5 stars Incomplete; not sufficient material to pass 640-821

1-0 out of 5 stars Garbage In -> Garbage Out
How does an abhorrent piece of study material like this even make it past the editors?I know that if I was an editor, I would NOT want my name associated with this book.Just go to the Cisco Press website and take a look at the 42kb errata file. There is a correction on almost every other page it seems! Please, save your money and your time and look elsewhere for study material. This book will more than likely cause you to fail the test rather than pass. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Showing its age, but some good stuff
I guess it is hard to produce a book at the start of a product's development cycle, so anything written in 2000 has to be looked at with some skeptism in 2003 as so much has changed between now and then. However, while the technology has moved on, the advice here is pretty solid. It just needs to be updated with everything that has happened since 2000 (like the Exchange service packs). I assume that the publisher will employ a new copy editor to pick up the typos, but there does seem to be a second edition around because I couldn't find some of the problems reported in other reviews in my copy. It'll be interesting to see what Redmond makes of Exchange 2003 when it hits the streets.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointed with this poor offering
Tony Redmond seems to have written this book without using this product in anger. There is very little here that you wouldn't have figured out after an hour with a lab setup. I'm also dissapointed to see that he is still trotting out the same old generic advice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Too Bad But Falls Short
Hefty at over 1,000 pages and more text than graphics, it can be boring. Cisco texts have more graphics and useful ones at that. However, it does cover a number of topics, but can be found in other books as well. Worst of all, it doesn't include any CD-ROM with an electronic version or handy utilities that other books offer. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference!
I took the 3 basic Developer courses one year ago, onsite at an authorized Lotus training center.Lotus Notes is only one of the many databases I support, so I have not been able to use what I learned in the classes on a daily, or even weekly, basis.I consulted this book twice today, and found exactly what I was searching for both times immediately by using the index. Thanks to the concise index, I did not have to read through pages of other topics to find my solutions. The total cost of the book was justified in less than 10 minutes!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the Domino Designer novice
I've spent my time developing SQL and Access databases, so when it came to Domino, I was apprehensive at first. With the help of this book, halfway through it, I developed a functional database to contain work orders. I've received many compliments on it, and I've the book to thank. Many of the things used in it I learned directly from the book. If you are looking for advanced web development, this is not the book you need. If you are looking for a good "feet in the pool" starter, I recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for starting, but limited in space and somehow outdated
This book offers a good introduction to legal matters in the internet to people in any of the following situations:4-0 out of 5 stars Good coverage of the field for layman and sysops
"Net Law" (cf. BKNLHLUI.RVW) was written for the lawyer."SysLaw" (cf. BKSYSLAW.RVW) was written for the layman, rather than lawyer, but was still aimed at sysops rather than the common herd. This book fills that space, and is the first I can recall that doesso.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding instructional book on installing and using qmail
My first edition copy of this book is dog-eared and full of bookmarks. This is an excellent tutorial on installing and using qmail. It includes step-by-step instructions for each task involved in setting up and administering (as well as customizing) qmail. Great text. Highly recommended. You don't need to be a Linux expert to install qmail if you follow this guidebook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great starter book for anyone
Dave Sill did an excellent job of showing how to setup email server. If you know some Linux commands, you'll have no problem setup your first Linux email server.I personally prefer Dave's Qmail handbook to John Levine's Qmail (I got as well).Levine's Qmail is an great second book.5-0 out of 5 stars Qmail made much easier with this book
After a month, and hours of installing and reinstalling FreeBSD and Qmail, I finally got the mail server working right! This was my first attempt at a mail server which I use for my family members and a few friends. There are a few errors in the book in some of the scripts which did cause me many problems. That was a pain. But, even at that, I don't think I would have been able to get Qmail running without this book. It is a great book for a person like me who is always doing something a bit over my head. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best and most "reader friendly" how-to book to date.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
I've read this book from cover to cover. It was helpful to me.I am tasked with upgrading my 2000 Exchange toExchange 2003 in a SAN environment, with high availablity as my goal.I've been administering Exchange for over 6 yrs now, so a book on how-to was not my expectation.I also own Exchange 2000 24seven, and have ordered the 2003 edition. The 24seven book is a very good reference guide in my opinion, and more along the lines of what you need if detailed directions are your desire. Do not buy this book if you are trying to pass a test.

4-0 out of 5 stars Designed For Large Exchange Implementations
Being new to the MS Exchange world, I wanted a book that detailed installation, configuration, troubleshooting, etc.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best Exchange book I have seen yet, but not PERFECT
I have not read the 24x7 book, but I have evaluated most of the other Exchange books on the market. This book has "actual" information from someone's experience - instead of just being a regurgitation from the Microsoft help manual. Several books on the market are truly weak regurgitations of the help file, unfortunately. Based on the review for the 24x7 book, I am buying a copy of that now. I checked out Boswell's Exchange book in the store the other day and didn't see the stuff that I was looking for in it. However, Bosewell has a good name and is usually very thorough. So, I would say that you should probably check out that book and the 24x7 book to see what you think about the people reviewing those.
