3-0 out of 5 stars Photoshop 6 for Dummies
Although this book can be quite useful for basics, it is too laden down with useless titbits. Also, a lot of important stuff is hidden between these, so it can be very easy to become frustrated. The book is presented well, slightly too much light humour but it does at least presume that you (like I did) have no experience. Practice will make you a much better photoshop user than reading this book, but combining this with thousands of F1 searches will set you well on your way.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dry, Dry, and still more Dry
I'd rather eat the pages of this book for lunch and swallow them without a glass of water than read any further from this bone-dry book.I found the humor in the book more iritating than helpful, and the expanse of long drawn-out paragraphs with very few visual aids proved this to be the worst Photoshop book I've laid my hands on.1-0 out of 5 stars It should be subtitled (forcomputer experts only)
I have been a pen & brush graphics artist all of my life. Now that I have retired, I decided to try computer image manipulation. I bought this book in the hopes of learning to recolor, flip, distort, or whatever via my computer (I just got my first one in 2000)and have found it maddening to use. The authors gloss over information vital to a basic understanding of Photoshop and then blithely show highly advanced image techniques that cannot be duplicated without the underlying knowledge. It pretends to being step-by-step, but ignores crucial steps. For example, a complex collage is created using a number of disparate images: how did they select only that portion of the original? How did they make the surrounding parts of the image transparent so the background shows through? This are the most basic maneuvers, but a couple of months with the book left me unenlightened. I have since found another book that delivers on the premise of this one, Photoshop 6 In An Instant by Toot & Woolridge, and am now happily photoshopping away -- this despite the fact that Photoshop 6 for Dummies was more ... and has many pages of color illustration, in contrast to Photoshop 6 In An Instant's reliance on B&W even to show color manipulation! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars ACT 2005 is the greatest
I want to thank you karen for the remarkable book, it is very easy and at the same time have everything in it . I enjoyed reading the book and hope you can write more, so many people in the IT industry will enjoy reading Books again. Please keep on the good work. God Bless you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Acts 2005 dummies
Book is easy to follow, very helpful to a beginner. It would probably be helpful to an experienced user but I am so new to this that I have not even looked into advanced features. I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review from the Author
Don't be fooled by the "Dummies" title - Wiley Publishing has a very successful formula that they've developed for this series. As much as I'd like to think that you're going to read this book from cover to cover, alas, it's meant to be a reference book that you can pick up and instantly find the answer to your most pressing questions. I've covered the most commonly used of the ACT! features and included many of the "gotchas" that I've encountered over my many years of ACT! consulting. I've given you easy, step by step instructions that don't require you to work with "pretend" contacts. Most importantly, I've tried to infuse the book with a sense of humor because to me learning a software program should be fun and non-threatening.

Peachtree for dummies is no better than the user's guide that comes with Peachtree.I'll give anyone my copy so they don't waste their money on it.Its basically theuser's guide, but paraphrased. It really explains absolutely nothing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to the technology
I thought this book did a good job of introducing the subject matter, especially if you treat it as a high level overview. It gave enough information and examples so that I could evaluate how I might use the technology.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Primer
This book is an excellent introduction into SAN background, Design, Technologies. Perfect for Admin, Managers. Easy enough to understand, but detailed enough to be of value.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Newbie Book
I have been in IT for 7 years and only recently have had exposure to SANs.I have never really cared for "Dummies" books, but this one is great as an intro to SANs.It lays the ground work for SANs and afterwards you can jump into an intermediate level book or material. It IS NOT for those who have had exposure to SANs. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars After you create your web page, then what?
This is a great starter book, but once you get your web site designed, then what?I wanted to know more about hosting services and costs, etc. Then found another title on here called "The Complete Web Hosting Kit Pro."This is a complete kit that lets you host your web site on your own PC for free.Comes with everything you need... instructions and software to host your site on your PC at home or at work.I recommend both this book and the web hosting kit.

2-0 out of 5 stars Dissapointed
If you are looking to obtain a basic knowlege of web programming, then this is not the book for you. I wanted a basic guide, but the author managed to create a book that is TOO basic. Yes, I was able to get my first website up on the internet, but it doesn't DO anything. For that, I'll need to buy another book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok if considered in the big picture
As those of us in the web design business know, creating a successful website is 10% web page creation and 90% business smarts. It's often misunderstood that making web pages is the hard work. This book is really well written, but must be considered in the big picture of web commerce.

3-0 out of 5 stars No information on synchronizing
While this book does explain how to manage contacts, there is absolutely no information on the most difficult part of Act!: How to synchronize. Do not buy this book if you are looking how share databases with other users. Although there is a chapter titled, "Sharing information with others", there is no mention of how to synchronize!

4-0 out of 5 stars Act! is a program that is as good as you want it to be:
I've used Act! 6 as long as it has been out.Prior to that, I struggled through buggy earlier versions, going back ten years or so, or however long they've been out.For my use, contact management, I've looked at other programs and have not seen any program any better than Act!, but then again, I'm used to this program. If I had to do it all over again, I would still go with Act!, but I would read this Act! for Dummies book from cover to cover. For the first few years I only learned what I felt I had to learn. And, because of that my knowledge base was limited, which resulted in Act! having a limited value to me. I can tell you that most the people in our company that use Act! don't use it like they should. They don't recognize the program's power to make them more efficient and organized. Most people will continue to use their old methods of organization, i.e., hand written Day Timer methods, etc., will never actually use the appointment scheduling features, and then tell people that Act! simply isn't helping them much. Little do they know that Act! is the most powerful organizational program that they can buy, from my view, and all they need to do is learn it and use it. It took me time, but now I have six sales people under me, who travel. They all synchronize daily, so that I can schedule things for them to do, or they can flag notes for me to read, and we're always on top of our priorities. They can be in a motel in Lansing Michigan, and me in my office in Reno, Nevada, and we're all over our responsibilities as if we're in the same office. If something important slips through the crack, it's because someone isn't using their Act! program, or they aren't using it correctly. This program is like an incredibly powerful tool if put into the hands of someone who wants to succeed, while if put in the wrong hands it will not be used, it will be useless. The learning curve can take a very long time, as it did with me, simply because I didn't want to learn any more than I had to learn, to deal with my immediate needs. The power in this program can not be unleashed unless you do more than what I did, and take the time to learn it, and make sure you work it.Some of my sales people don't even open the program in the morning for hours. How can this program help these people? But, little by little, as they see how great this program can be, they are coming around.I recommend contacting an Act! consultant, and pay them a kings ransom if necessary, but learn this program faster thanyour competition can, simply by reading this book from cover to cover TWICE if you have to.And, every time you need to learn more, don't put it off, learn it now.Time is too valuable not to put this program to work for you.You can manager yourself, a crew of people, while also managing a powerful mass mail (or email) marketing program with this program if you are smart enough to learn this program as fast as you can. There is simply no other program with this kind of power that I've ever seen.I'm sold on this program again and again, as I find ways to take advantage of its horsepower.Managing a database of contacts couldn't be done at this level without Act!But, I don't give it five stars yet, until Act! decides to put on more traveling seminars, so I can send our sales people to them in our own town at least once a year.Act!, get working on that, will you? Then again, don't let my competition learn to use Act!In that respect, it's a secret weapon.

5-0 out of 5 stars CUT TO THE CHASE AND BUY THIS BOOK
ACT6! for Dummies is not only extremely informative, it is fun and easy to read.It is a great starting place to learn the many aspects of the program and it is a great reference once you are using the program regularly. If you can figure out how to use this program to its fullest by using the book supplied by ACT, you are probably not in sales, you have a lot of extra time on your hands, and you love to watch paint dry.Unless you are selling real estate in South Florida and one of my competitors, buy ACT6! for Dummies and get yourself on track fast. ... The machine I'm using to write this review is the slowest machine to shut down that I've ever seen. When I was first flipping through this book, I saw Technique 6: Shut Down, Restart, and Switch Users Quickly. It turns out that there is an undocumented feature built into XP called shutdown. The book says that the machine will shut down in half the time. I found that it shuts down much faster than that.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too much "for dummies," not enough "cutting edge"
This is a good book for people with basic PowerPoint skills. It covers useful skills that people who do PowerPoint regularly should know. These skills include:
5-0 out of 5 stars The PowerPoint Novel
Well, to start with this book does not have any dry or boring moments. It's a rollercoaster of PowerPoint info presented typically well in the Dummies style, and it's got lots of pepper and spice on the way to keep your PowerPoints looking awesome. In fact, even when the book is not with you in front of a computer, you'll still love reading it. I should know because I read it on a long airplane journey. And now when I'm not in front of the book, I still recollect the great advice when I'm doing my PowerPoints. It's like yes, this is what Bajaj said in the book! If you can read just one chapter, read the chapter on Color. That itself is worth the cost of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars What I Wish EVERY Presenter Knew!
So you've been doing PowerPoint for years now. So you've even done your own custom templates. Now it's time to take your PowerPoint game to the next level. Cutting Edge PowerPoint for Dummies was written by Geetesh Bajaj, a Microsoft PowerPoint MVP. That means that, while he doesn't actually work for Microsoft, he knows enough about PowerPoint that Microsoft tells people with questions to talk to him, and people like him. He's got the credentials to do this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good intro for newbie bloggers, not as useful for advanced
At 368 pgs, Blogging for Dummies certainly fits the "For Dummies" mould.
2-0 out of 5 stars Waste of money
As a beginning blogger, I was disappointed with this book.I generally like the Dummies series and have found them useful and entertaining. This one is not.The author is sarcastic -p. 3 "What You're Not to Read - I forbid you to read trashy novels from the supermarket."Really! The information on Blogger doesn't add anything that can't be found on Blogger help screens.Several blogging services, for example Edublog, are not mentioned at all.Last, The Part of Tens was not as neat as in most of the Dummies books.I want my money back!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book to get started, well worth buying!
Blogging for Dummies by Brad Hill is a terrific resource for new to moderate bloggers.I've been blogging for almost six months, but I learned an enormous amount of information from Hill's book. His writing is irreverent and witty and full of what you need to know to really make your blog stand out from the crowd.I still have to figure out how to shrink a picture to 50k, but once I get that down, there'll be no stopping me!The book covers Blogger.com, TypePad, Yahoo360, MSN, and several other sites in detail so a new user can jump write in and get a great site going. His instructions are basic and easy to follow, and he addresses the pros and cons of each site well with pictured examples. It had great info for me to get moving, but I think I'll end up purchasing this book, because he has a great deal of info inside for more experienced bloggers who want more control over their sites. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars I can see why people become addicted to these...
Seems like all the tech talk lately has been about the potential shutdown of RIM and the BlackBerry network. But it dawns on me that I really don't know *why* these devices have been dubbed "CrackBerry" by those addicted to them. After reading BlackBerry for Dummies by Robert Kao and Dante Sarigumba, I can see the appeal...

5-0 out of 5 stars My honest opinion of Cisco Networking for Dummies
What a fantastic book with a lot of detail, written in an easy, understandable everyday language. Surprisingly, book was very comprehensive: Covered information about routers, of course, but also switches, bridges and hubs. I'd recommend this book to anyone who is serious about getting a good grasp on Cisco networking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just the right book for us beginners
Like many others working in small businesses, I assumed the duty of overseeing our network, which has a Cisco router. I was totally lost and the cost (and technical level) of the training available was much too high. So, on the chance it could help me, I purchased this book. I must say that Mr. Gilster has the knack for writing about very technical information at a very non-technical way. Not that I understand all of what he's telling me, but I assume that in time, given more study, I'll soon be able to speak intelligently with our Cisco and network service technicians. Truly Great Job, Mr. Gilster and Thanks!

1-0 out of 5 stars I'm sorry but Vanilla is right
I purchased a copy of this book before reading the reviews - it was so bad I thought I'd come here and see what others thought. I know Networking for Dummies implies that the absolute basics are par for the course but the "basics" stuff is really stale material for a recently written book. If one is a beginner, they should be treated to modern information & new advances in technology that make networking simpler & accessable to the "beginner".The cisco product info is weak, the Cisco site offering way more information on each and every product mentioned in this book. If you want a good Cisco book, my all time favorite is Cisco: A Beginner's Guide (It's a beginners guide but not for dummies !) To be fair, I have read quite a few networking guides and several beginners guides and may very well be beyond the beginner level so perhaps I'm expecting too much. However, I can't say I'm happy spending the money - the info is old, too basic, and often I was able to get better information on the cisco site. Oh well... ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Adequate
While this book has helped me to get up and running in Adobe InDesign, I am not overwhelmed by it as a resource. For one thing, it needs more screen pictures and clearer screen pictures.I also found several instances where knowlege was assumed - the editors has skipped to the conclusion of a task, without really explaining it.I guess that they assume most layout designers will know how, but for those more familiar with Microsoft products, that is not the case. Finally, the index at the back of the book is sorely lacking.I could not find many basic elements of the program listed there, so the index is not always much of a resource for jumping right to the area you need.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wealth of Tips and Knowledge
This book sits next to me all day. I read it front to back and am now using it as a reference during my projects. This book is worth it if you have or plan to purchase CS2. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok book for newbies
A fairly good book for "newbies" I've actually had it for sometime. Ham Radio definitely triumps during disaster and this book will get you the basics in clear, concise terms to help get you on the air and talking to folks all over the entire world!!! My Fiance is even interested in ham radio now!! Look me up when you get your ticket,
5-0 out of 5 stars Randy Johnson's comment
Randy made excellent comments.I'd also like to add, in response to the question we hams all receive, as to "why radio, when the Internet, cell phones, and other forms of communication exist?" is that in disaster areas - even small disasters - normal avenues of communication are can't be used.Phone lines are jammed or down.Cell services are down.Radio is usually the only type of communication that can be used under such circumstances.

5-0 out of 5 stars How not to be an Access dummy
First, it is important to realize what this book is not.It is not a complete Access reference book.It will not teach you database theory and all aspects of data normalization. It does not cover advanced techniques such as VBA programming, the ADO object model or using the Windows API.
5-0 out of 5 stars Access Forms & Reports for Dummies
I have shelves filled with computer "How To" type books and in the past have stayed away from the "Dummies" series thinking them to be a bit too simplified. However, recently I needed to get up to speed with Microsoft's Access, specifically in order to prepare reports. So I bought Access Forms & Reports for Dummies by Brian Underdahl.I found this book to be a refreshing diversion from the normally dry and sometimes obtuse computer books of the past.Mr. Underdahl has a colloquial writing style which is not only entertaining but highly informative. Within a very short period of time I found myself successfully creating Forms and Reports which made my work go much smoother.I highly recommend this book to anyone who needs to understand Access and quickly create Forms and Reports.

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes Access Far More Useful
Access is, of course, a database program. Unlike many of the big database programs, it is closely integrated with a quite sophisticated front end package to enable the creation of easy to use input forms and quite good looking reports to take the data stored in the database and present it to the outside world in a clear and useful format.
