5-0 out of 5 stars EASY TO READ
This book is very informative ad even enjoyable to read. It has been a big help and explains things so anyone can understand.
5-0 out of 5 stars Basic But Beautiful
This book is about the very basics of computers, but it completely covers all parts of a computer, inside AND out.

4-0 out of 5 stars basic information, will help you get started with PCs
This book is aimed at complete beginners, which is not a bad thing; too few computer books really are. It covers the basics of how to use a computer (with an emphisis on the XP OS). Covers basic hardware and software, what part of the computer does what, the difference between an OS and application software (many people don't have a clue) and other basics. It won't make you a computer geek, but it will certainly, for many people, increase thier computer literacy significantly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful book, but doesn't reflect Premiere Elements 2.0
I bought this book because I found the Premiere Elements user guide less than helpful.Adobe Premiere Elements for Dummies does contain a lot of helpful information and tips, but my impression is that I'll need to read the book cover to cover rather than using it as a reference guide.Be aware that this book's screen shots do not reflect Premiere Elements 2.0.I don't know how different 2.0 is from previous versions, but this was a source of frustration for me when I was trying to find out how to "single step" through a clip.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Book Adobe should have Written!
I have been working with Adobe Elements for about 6 months now. I started with Adobe's tutorial and then their "Classroom in a Book" series and have created numerous multi hour DVD's from old VHS video I have. As with most books from the makers of software, they leave a lot of how too stuff out, so I started to look elsewhere for more info on how to use all of the great things in Elements. I saw this book and it's rating so I figured I'd give it a try. For the $16 it cost, even if I learned just two new helpful things it would be worth the money. Never having read any other ".... For Dummies" book I had no Idea what to expect.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great advice
This book is just what I needed.I had just acquired the Premiere Elements Program and understood the very basics from the anemic book that comes with the program, and the DVD that introduces the program.Premiere Elements for Dummies took me to the details needed in putting together projects, editing the clips, adding the soundtrack and music, and getting it to disc.I read other books, and this was the best one - not too basic, not too detailed or advanced. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Several Common Apps Working and Described
There are a handfull of applications that every web designer sooner or later has to implement. Of course a skilled web programmer can do any of these applications. All it takes is time, thinking about the problem, writing, debugging, checking out, and making the customer (who may be the programmer him/her self) happy.

4-0 out of 5 stars I hate raining on the parades
This is a very good book for troubleshooting, and if you think you could use this, you probably could. Do you know how to defrag a hard drive? If not, this is for you (it's easy, really).
5-0 out of 5 stars Great choice as a first line of reference to fix things...
[2nd edition review]
5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have book for Windows users!
Containing great humor and experience(!), this book is written mainly for users of Windows XP/ME/and 98, although users of Windows 95/NT/and especially 2000 will find that most of this 1st edition still applies. 2nd edition= XP exclusively. Dan Gookin wrote the original Dos for Dummies book- all Dummies books started with him! Chapters 1-5 cover the basics, with 6-and-on being intense! This is the strength of the book: hands-on, down & dirty problem solving! Solutions include: getting around in Windows; minor irks & quirks; slow PC; audio-video; startup-shutdown; keyboard, mouse, monitor & printer; disk disaster; internet connection; Internet Explorer; Outlook Express; general Windows disruption- too much to list here! (This is mainly a software-related book- for an intro to detailed hardware-related issues, I highly recommend Upgrading & Fixing PCs for Dummies by Andy Rathbone, or for advanced issues Scott Mueller's Upgrading & Repairing PCs). My favorite thing here: Registry Editing 101! Many books mention the Registry- Dan actually walks you through some basic, yet sometimes necessary, editing procedures in a few very specific instances. This is beyond basic info, and is downright technical in nature. It's insane how much information he's crammed into one book! Finishing Chapters include PM- preventive maintenance- for disks in general, and using Backup. I use Norton Ghost for Backup myself- I can't stress enough how great it is! You can get it with Norton AntiVirus too if you purchase SystemWorks 2003 Professional (my favorite!). They're all worth their weight in gold(!). To Dan Gookin: In a good-natured way, I recommend Argument 4 in favor of reinstalling Windows: it brings peace of mind! With all the latest Internet threats today in the news- Viruses, Worms & Spyware- some people just don't trust that their computers are clean & secure without the reinstalling of Windows(!). Of course, with the proper use of disk imaging/backup software, this really shouldn't be an issue, but some people never get around to this kind of PM. Some people may not trust AntiVirus/Spyware apps to work for them, and reinstalling Windows can bring enormous peace of mind. Don't blame me for mentioning it- paranoia can be a powerful thing! Suggestions for next edition: maybe in PM section & Internet disaster prevention, including basic definitions & tips on safe Internet use? Phishing, Pharming, Identity Theft & Email-scams may not *directly* damage computers, but they sure do affect their users(!). Also- How about advanced videogame troubleshooting? Even people with up-to-date hardware experience crashes & restarts during games. In the Windows 2000 Getting Started book, a common solution to blue-screen stop messages is to "Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing". Believe it or not, it worked for me! Far fewer crashes during fast moving video & videogames. These are my best suggestions! Thank you for this incredible & long-overdue book! ... Read more

Editorial Review

The title of this book invites comment. "Some things weren't meant for dummies and Unix is one of them," you might say. Wrong! Levine and Young take advantage of the Dummies format's strength with command-line operating systems. They flatten the learning curve and have even the greenest beginner doing useful work with Unix in mere hours.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Introduction
Why I Chose this Book:
4-0 out of 5 stars This book is useful.
Ok guys this book isn't bad. It is very descriptive and well written. The problem is there's much of water, long blah-blah-blah and so on. It takes too long to start and then looOOoong leaps from one real problem to another. But it is "for dummy" book it supposed to be like that with all explanations back to the beginning.
2-0 out of 5 stars Worth reading, but not paying
I recommend checking this book out from your library, but definitely not paying for it.There are many internet guides which are free and do cover the same amount of information. The most aggravating aspect of this book is the vacuous writing style, which the authors apparently believe is funny or cute.Every paragraph contains an aside aimed at criticizing the operating system or reveling in the concept of stupidity. It feels patronizing and detracting when the authors refer to an apparent "need" for UNIX to be complicated, or the inevitability of the user's typos.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Weak Source of Information
I felt the book was poorly written and lacked weight in places.Although the high level definitions were accurate, the detail was messy and the writing style was poor. The internet could give you better information and detail then buying this book.I gave it one star because at least the author tried to make the subject matter colorful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real situations explained
This book is a great place to find everything in one place. This is the first book I've ever read that gives you step by step instructions on securing servers. Most of the other books I've read tell you to do it, but they don't tell you how. I especially liked the chapter on wireless networks. My company just installed one and we didn't know that it was open to the public. I've heard that a lot of computer security has to do with basic rules or common sense, but I've never seen it put all in one place and explained so well before.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE This Book!!
This is absolutely the best book I've ever read about networks and security. It isn't a "dumb" book and it's not too simplistic, either. It's perfect for network people who are supposed to be doing security, but don't know where to start. There's lots of stuff in there I never thought about - like your computers being used to attack other computers. There are a lot of checklists and hints to help out companies who don't have a computer security expert on board. Thank you, Ms Cobb for writing such a neat book ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars deceiving
I bought this thing at the local Wal-mart one day hoping to learn some Java in my spare time. In the first day, I read through page 150 and was ready to call myself a dummy, as the book's title told me I was. I do have to say that, although the dummies series has taught me many things, it does have its setbacks. I have a shelf with 14 dummies books that don't teach me anything I want to or don't already know. You can probable find out by all the other reviews that you are truly a dummy if you buy this, but I just want to help clarify why.

1-0 out of 5 stars A beginners guide with nowhere to go
If you have access to AutoCAD but have no reason to use it on a professional level this book may be fine. If you are purchasing this and already own a couple other manuals to look things up in, it's ok for the humor. The book is not large enough to touch on all the facets of AutoCAD and the massive program it has become. If you intend to make a living with AutoCAD look elsewhere. I watched a co-worker attempt to jump a couple revs with this book. He was better off with his previous knowledge than after three days with this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of Shelf Space
The author starts the book by telling you how great the book is and how clear and straightforwared he's going to be... and to be honest, it does indeed start out quite well (about 3 pages worth?).But it became evident early on that he "lost his legs" as he continued to write the book. His examples quickly degraded into useless collections of codings - they simply did not work as advertised.Worse than this, when he's trying to make a point, he provides examples that are far too complicated for what he's attempting to illustrate (but remember, they usually don't work anyhow).Bottom line: Snoopy has more writing talent than this guy.(...)Trust me on this one -(...)

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic
Not so long ago most people did not know how to use a computer. Dan Gookin's "DOS for Dummies" stepped us through the hills and vales of how to use one. For this alone the book deserves respect.
1-0 out of 5 stars Every Page Another Stupid Joke

Seems like I've been ending up with a number of C# books in my review pile lately. The most recent one is C# 2005 For Dummies by Stephen Randy Davis and Chuck Sphar. As with many programming language books in the Dummies series, it's a solid coverage of the material for those who are looking for a broad coverage of the material for a first exposure...

4-0 out of 5 stars A book on general VoIP
This book is a non-technical book on VoIP that explains to the reader what VoIP is and why companies and individuals can benefit from it. It talks about cost saving using VoIP. In my opinion there are 2 benefits from VoIP: cost saving and (extra data-voice) features. The author could have written a bit more about (extra possible convergence) features. If you want a technical book for implementing VoIP, there are others more suited to your needs. The gateway part discussed in another review can be found (theoretically, not practically) in Voice over the packet network from Wright. Mr. Kelly's book was to the point, concise and comprehensable. An excellent primer. The review using a lot of abbreviations and technical terms was not to the point, since it just sums some terms whose meaning can be looked up on for instance wikipedia. The basic function of these terms is discussed in general in this book. (The reviewer sums a lot of Voice codecs for instance.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Introductory Book
The basic technology of the conventional telephone system has been around since the very beginning. You make a call and you get a dedicated communications channel to the instrument at the other end. And in the beginning that was indeed a physical wire. This wiring circuit was physically switched to your phone and stayed there until you hung up. Later Bell Labs was set up to discover how to get more signals through a wire than just one message at a time. Everyone knew that you could get more signal through a wire than just one phone call. And running all that wire was expensive, especially when it ran underwater across the Atlantic.
2-0 out of 5 stars VERY High Level Stuff
This book isn't for technical people looking to implement a VoIP solution. It doesn't even define the terms one typically finds in eBay auction descriptions. For example, a typical description for a VoIP phone contains statements like:

My 8th edition just arrived which I ordered because my new XP from Dell arrived with WordPerfect 11, and it was overwhelming.I started at the beginning by trying to follow the directions to create an icon. Page 8, jumpstarting WordPerfect's directions were not working. Why it said to right-click the WordPerfect Office 11 option when I wanted WordPerfect is beyond me, but I followed the directions. The pop-up menu appeared, displaying this list of commands:5-0 out of 5 stars New to WordPerfect? Buy this book.
This is the book you want if you've never used WordPerfect before. It covers all the basics and then some. I recommend it to anyone who is new to WordPerfect.
