4-0 out of 5 stars Be a player in the world to come
At first glance Engines that Move Markets appears to be directed at investors. I would argue that this book is equally, if not more, valuable for entrepreneurs creating any venture aimed at somehow changing the world. After all, true entrepreneurs are by definition "change advocates."
4-0 out of 5 stars Required reading for serious investors
Nairn has written an epoch work that is worthy reading for any serious student of the financial markets.Having recently passed thru an investment bubble of titanic proportions, Nairn's trip thru the history of other vaunted technological breakthroughs helps us realize that wise students of stock market history might have been able to both participate in the upside of the bubble while still having a chance, based on the historical precendents he so methodically outlines, of identifying when to get out and avoid the downside debacle that follows every such market insanity. This book should be required reading for every student in MBA programs and most especially for all those stock analysts churning out buy recommendations on speculative stocks in March 2000!Common investors should read it also so they can know how to identify those analysts who have failed to read it and gained the useful perspective the book offers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Insightful history of investment and industrial development
I didn't know what to expect from this lengthy tome but found it to be a fascinating history of inventions and their impact on the investing world. The author discusses developments that we take for granted--computer, railroad--and explores how these advances changed society and business. This is terrific book for anyone interested in both investing and history. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Last of A Dying Breed
This is a classic textbook which introduces students to the fundamentalsof analytic geometry. In order to understand calculus, one must have athorough background in analytic geometry.Unfortunately, the current trendin math publishing is to forgo this great subject and present students withan motley mix of topics in a course called PreCalculus. Trigonometry andanalytic geometry end up getting the short shrift, with greater emphasisbeing placed on algebraic manipulation. This is a tragic loss for studentson a number of levels.Theyneed analytic geometry in order to succeed ineven first semester calculus, and yet for many analytic geometry isrelegated to the second or third semester of a calculus class in college,or in one chapter (or less) in a precalculus book! Also, the analyticgeometry allows the high school student a glimpse of mathematical beauty,of how things in mathematics work together: that mathematics holds up as asubject and is not just an assortment of tricks for various situations.Hopefully, the trend will turn around and this will not be the last of adying breed: that others will continue to offer and write expository workson this subject for the benefit ofstudents who wish to continue on tohigher mathematics. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
One of the keys to successful trading is recognizing that the market is not a combatant. It is not a bloodstained arena, a boxing ring, a firefight, or even a physical thing. This book also helped me confirm something I have always suspected: trading should be easy. This is to say, the journey is hard and grueling, but once you get there the sense of conflict and adversity should be gone. Before-During and After-Hours. Congratulations!

5-0 out of 5 stars Maximizing the trader's state of mind is the key to success
Conflicts, contradictions and paradoxes in thinking can spell disaster for even a highly motivated, astute and well grounded trader. Through simple exercises, traders will learn how to think in terms of probabilities, and adopt the specific beliefs necessary to developing a winner's mindset. After-Hours and More!

5-0 out of 5 stars Aspiring traders can't afford to be without this book!
An excellent book on after-hour trading and technical analysis that cuts through all the hype surrounding this subject. Save yourself a lot of money and read this book BEFORE you make your mistakes! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical approach to developing Web Services
Dr. Watters takes a practical approach at developing Web Services application - rather than theoretical conceptual approach to the topic. He approached the topic from both the J2EE and .NET programmer's point of view, and provides examples throughout the text that demonstrates both A) strengths and weaknesses of each platform for developing Web services, B) broad and yet finance-industry focused application of Web services.Examples demonstrated throughout the text are easy to follow and relate to.One example that is referred to often in the text related to checking balance of a band account and a more complicated stock trading application which the author used to demonstrate WDSL and UDDI examples.
2-0 out of 5 stars General web services, little on finance specifics
Given the specificity of the title I had expected to see financial web services standards covered, as well as regulatory impact of Sarbanes Oaxley and other measures. But there was little of that. What is there instead is a fairly high level walkthrough of web services standards that is reasonable well written.
3-0 out of 5 stars minimise bandwidth usage
Watters suggests that developers should build applications that use relatively less CPU and relatively more bandwidth, to keep the network busy. He gives an example where a task takes 10 minutes to compute 1Gb of data and then takes 1 second to transmit it. So that CPU only uses its network for 1 second out of 600 seconds. He sees this as undesirable.

5-0 out of 5 stars From A to Z
each chapter give you a step to start an online Investment 4-0 out of 5 stars Encyclopedic coverage with high readability
This fine (and fat) book is just the thing for people who currently trade online or those who are considering it. It provides a nice assortment of screen shots of useful sites to become familiar with and concludes each chapter with a concise summary in list format. The book is 823 pages long but still doesn't go far enough on specialist topics. But this book is a comprehensive and carefully constructed primer on the entire waterfront from Stocks to Bonds to Mutual Funds and of course to the particulars and precautions of setting up an account, making trades, gathering timely information etc. I like that it doesn't take an AOL-centric point of view because that would be too limiting. If you are interested in Online Investing, buy this book and supplement it with a subscription to "Online Investing" magazine (monthly) which would bring you up to date on new developments and also cover special topics with more depth. ... If you already understand basic options, then this book will add the finishing touches to get to another profitable and consistent level.Ignore the bio and personal commentary and skip to methodology or "how too."There is substance to the work if you can read between the lines.
1-0 out of 5 stars Friends, family only giving 5 stars.
Did you hear about when Amazon accidentally uncovered the identities of some of the reviewers and it was discovered that a lot of Authors were giving their own books numerous 5 stars reviews? This book in my opinion is a classical example of that, the book has no structure,no organisation. The author blows his trumpet a lot about his farcical NFL career (who cares). It is truly an awful book on options and I would be willing to give my copy away for free.I would give it 0 stars if Amazon would have given me that option, buyer beware.
