5-0 out of 5 stars good for beginners
It is a very good guide book for beginners really. I knew maybe just a little about Mac. But definitely not enough to help me go though a smooth work process. This book teaches me shortcuts and the necessary surviving skills I needed. I would recommend to other people.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Tutorial
Having switched from a PC a year ago and having suffered through 12 months with no manual, it is a relief to have it. It is written in plain English, very basic intro to Tiger OS X and should absolutely have been provided to customers free with the computer. Apple is too cute in assuming everyone, of course, is intuitive about "getting" its system. If you've spent much time in PC land it is a huge transition. This book is great because it assumes no knowledge and provides basic definitions. I also bought another "Missing Manual" for iPhoto and that was helpful, as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have resource for Mac users

5-0 out of 5 stars Good product, quick service
The book arrived in a timely manner, and in mint condition. What more could you want?I highly recommend this seller.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beginner to Advanced, Comprehensive Guide to Reference
This book is well written and laid out.Whether or not you are a beginner or advanced user coming to vi, this is a valuable tool for getting the most out of vi.
5-0 out of 5 stars THE VI reference
This book is the reference for those wanting to understand the mysteries of Vi. Almost all Unix based systems typically have a variant of the Vi editor installed, even when the system is in a limited use state, therefore an understanding of this no-nonsense editor is crucial if you want to administer or recover your system. This makes the Vi the editor to know, and this book guides you through the basics to more advanced "tricks" used by the guru's. Even if you only plan on casually using Vi, you can't lose having this book in your library. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One very useful reading
As my experience suggests this highly useful book does very well as a companion for "UNIX Essentials and UNIX Core" DVD.While it is nicely written it is a pleasure to read and follow. As I followed someone's review, I have coupled it with the DVD and they supplement one another quite nicely! Concise format makes it easier to find topics as required.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a useful reference, pocket or otherwise
This book has a major deficiency as a reference: you can't easily find a specific topic. The book has no index and the table of contents is too high-level to help you find a particular topic (for example, "vi Commands" as a table of contents entry isn't really going to help you locate a particular command).
5-0 out of 5 stars Vi - your answers
Great Vi book for Unix Beginners. It gives great examples to use the command being inquired.

5-0 out of 5 stars Commandline editor guide
This is a handy little book to have around if you use the "vi" text editor and haven't mastered all the commands. Or if you use a different text editor regularly, but find yourself in a place that has only vi. I have about 5 of the O'Reilly Pocket reference books and find them handy reminders for languages, etc. This book is not intended to "teach" a person how to use vi. It is what it says, a "reference" to jog your memory or possibly find how to cut and paste text or one of the numerous functions systems folks wind up doing at times. I do prefer a different editor but vi is ubiquitous. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Stiff
I agree with David DelGreco. My review is mixed because a lot is covered and well explained, but the information is dispersed all over the place and sometimes plain wrong. It would be good to see sections for the *mouse way*, *visual way* and *Vi-ish way* from the start.
5-0 out of 5 stars So good I bought it twice
I loaned my original copy of this book to a co-worker who later quit, and took the book with him.I missed the book so much, I went and ordered another copy. And this was at a time in my life when I was actually clearing my book shelves of old books in an effort to simplify my life. This book is that good.Vim is arguably one of the best text editors in existence, and if you want to learn Vim I can't think of any better book than this one.Even if you're just a casual user who is going to edit a few config files on a Unix/Linx machine, this is the book for you; the first three chapters will have you well on your way to using Vim efficiently. If you're a programmer or advanced user, you'll also benefit from the later chapters. Some say that Vim's learning curve is too steep, and prefer to use simpler editors like Pico or Joe (or even Notepad, on Windows), but this book will take away your fear and will make learning Vim easy.Even if you just read the first few chapters, it's worth it.Highly recommended.

2-0 out of 5 stars Little detail, bad organization, Poor as a reference
If you've never used Vi before, this book will help you to get started. But after the first week, it won't be very useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars CATCH A TIGER BY THE TAIL!!
Are you a Unix- user or programmer or a system administrator? If you are, then this book is for you! Authors Andy Lester, Chris Stone, Chuck Toporek and Jason McIntosh, have done an outstanding job of writing a book that cuts through the chaff and gives you practical details you can use every day.
5-0 out of 5 stars Provides an overview of OS X Tiger Version 10.4 and focuses on the Unix layer, covering over 300 of Tiger's Unix commands
Andy Lester, Chris Stone, Chuck Toporek and Jason McIntosh's MAC OS X Tiger In A Nutshell: A Desktop Quick Reference is also a winner: it provides an overview of OS X Tiger Version 10.4 and focuses on the Unix layer, covering over 300 of Tiger's Unix commands, reviewing basic system and network features and functions, and providing a reference chick has been tested and checked against Tiger for optimum, flawless performance.

4-0 out of 5 stars Grab some Jolt and your favorite junk food - it's Mac/Unix geek time!
"Mac OS X Tiger in a Nutshell" isn't your typical tome on "everything you need to know to use Mac OS X." If you're looking for an easy to read, richly illustrated book to curl up with on a rainy day with a cup of coffee, this isn't it. But if you're interested in the Unix underpinnings of Mac OS X, then grab a six pack of Jolt and your favorite junk food, because there's a heck of a lot of information packed into this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice addition to my OSX UNIX library
Since I converted I have found OS X UNIX is amazingly friendly and accessible. Some people who had never used it before type commands and work with the operating system directly as a "cool guys" in movies! This book is very helpful and well written and it is serves as a very nice reference. I paired this book with that "UNIX Essentials" DVD I found here on Amazon and it is complete OS UNIX course recorded and this book and a video they contribute one another greatly. You improve the reading and by reading you improve what you have seen.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Guide to Panther

5-0 out of 5 stars Hefty, deep and well written
It's tough to tell this from Amazon, but this book is a thousand pages, which makes it quite a hefty tome. But that doesn't make it a doorstop. There are screenshots, but they are, by in large, useful and relevant, and the book doesn't use them to tell a click by click story of the interface.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good 'shop manual' for OS X Panther
Many years ago I bought a second hand Ford Cortina in dubious condition. I kept it running with the assistance of a marvelous volume purchased at a specialist bookstore that was referred to as "the shop manual." It wasn't much help teaching you how to drive or how to park but if you needed to know how to perform an oil change, flush the radiator or bleed the brakes it told you all the details. Now James Duncan Davidson has given me a shop manual for Macintosh OS X Panther.
2-0 out of 5 stars don't quite see where it fits
This book is supposed to fall in some middle ground between a Mac OSX manual (Like Pogue's Missing Manual on OSX) and the hard core extreme Mac-OSX-as-another-Unix-system (as typified in Mac OSX Unleashed or the OSX Nutshell handbook or the under-rated Unx for Mac OSX by Enzer). However, I think it just ends up neither fish nor fowl. Not really a Mac OSX manual because it is much too short for that, and not nearly as detailed as other books that get into much more depth on the Unix aspects of OSX. I would suggest getting the OSX Missing Manual (or Robin Williams OSX book) and then supplementing that with Enzer's book or Mac OSX unleashed.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for geeks, good for future geeks
This book is not for geeks. If you are already someone who understands Mac OS X inside and out, uses the terminal to accomplish things periodically, and know how to get things done you will find this book to have no new information. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Text on Vi
This is the best Vi editor book. Having said that, I can no longer remcommend using vi, instead if you can switch to vim. Vim is the next generation of vi...There are loads of plugins etc. There is a Vim text, (not as good as this one but it has to cover more stuff) But if you can't get vim, and dread learning emacs. This is the vi book for you. It covers regular expressions as understood by vi, it has all the basic set commands, the buffer control etc. It was originally written for internal classes at HP, but since there wasn't any other good vi books they have allowed general publication. Thanks HP!

5-0 out of 5 stars An essential book for beginners and seasoned vi users.
One of the few books on Vi that actually has good, simple, usable examples. It covers manyof the lesser-known features, as well as the more popular and necessary commands. The booktakes you quickly through the steps necessaryto achieve the results you want.Definitely a must-have book for anyone, whether you are a beginner, or seasoned, experienced vi user. ...
