2-0 out of 5 stars Beware - You need to ALSO know Photoshop
I was disappointed - not because the CSS stuff is poorly presented, because it's on the better side of average, but because to learn this book's stuff, or try to emulate some of the examples, requires a knowledege of Photoshop. For example, you need to know how to create an image with a gradient applied to a canvas, or to create a 1 pixel transparent row within an image - something that your average person may takes weeks to learn on his own.Photoshop is not all that intuitive to just grab a copy and simply create an image that the author uses.
3-0 out of 5 stars Great book but missing a page
Great resource for css designers. I particularly enjoyed the section on rounded corners and css without tables. But I did find one thing wrong with it--page 196 is missing from my copy. What happened?

5-0 out of 5 stars The Title Says It All
Dan's book has been incredible in helping me built great UIs that truly are bulletproof.I'm currently working with a mega-church to design a completely new website, and Bulletproof stays on my desk as a terrific reference. I'm amazed at how easy writing clean code is and how bulletproof it really is. Something like a box with links that I used to build out of complex tables and sliced images (that would invariably break in certain conditions) can now be done with a couple of divs, a couple of images, and a few lines of CSS.Amazing! This is a must have book for all designers. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very nice book
this is a very good book about web usability and its not a complex kind of book, you start reading it and u dont want to stop it untill you finish it!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not quite what I expected..
As an avid read of Mr.Nielsen's blog and his website, I figured this book would comprise the "Bible of Web Design".Unfortunately, I was a bit let down.
5-0 out of 5 stars Simple IS usually better
Please people don't design incredibly complex sites with over the top graphics that take an hour(feels like) to download even on broadband! I encounter this everyday and can't imagine what it must be like for those on dial-up, which is still most of the internet user base. Designers like to design and justify their high paying jobs by these crazy sites that simply drive me nuts. I recently tried looking for sunglasses on the Ray Ban site and Holy [...]! What a pain in the [...]! I finally went to a small reseller site where I could actually see the glasses quickly and make a purchase. The Ray Ban site I'm sure cost a fortune and is pretty but NOT user friendly. Web site designers need to remember that these sites are for people to find products and services, not to win design contests. My ex is a graphic designer(excuse me...User Interface Experience) for a very well know company and I know how they think. The more elaborate the better, we can charge clients more! KISS ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Bought 3 Photoshop books, kept this one - its great!
I couldn't tell which book was going to be the most useful, so I got 3 different books on Photoshop. After looking through each of them and doing some "tests" where I looked up the same subjects in all 3 books to see which author/s explained things better, it was a no-brainer -- the Photoshop Bible for CS2 is the best book on Photoshop out there. The other 2 went back, next day.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on Photoshop CS2!
Between the thorough coverage and the authors' insights, this book can't be beat. I'm a photographer and graphic designer, and I wouldn't consider living without this book by my side in the studio. I don't want to have to take a class, watch a video, or wade through lots of personal commentary. I want to know what something does, how it works, why it's a useful tool/feature (or not, and if not, what to do), and then get back to work. This book is filled with great tips, useful tricks, honest, clear instructions, and great examples. If you can't tell, I recommend this book!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book on Photoshop.
I looked into several Photoshop books before buying this one. I read the reviews, used the "search inside" stuff to read exerpts, and made my choice. Even with all that, buying books online can be a crapshoot - but this one paid off! This is a great book on Photoshop CS2. I've learned a lot already and keep this book right next to the computer so it's there when I need it. I like the style - not too jokey, not condescending - and the authors obviously know Photoshop like the back of their hands, including little things that you never even knew were there. The examples are practical but not oversimplified and the coverage of special effects, web graphics, and restoring photos is great. I'm sold, and recommend this book highly. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a comprehensive study guide...
I purchased this book after seeing the excellent reviews. This is a well written book and the flow of material is good. However, this book does not cover all the processes. For example, there is no mention of communication channels and how to calculate them. This is a hot item on the exam. This book covers around 70% of the exam material. If you want to experiment on the exam, get this book, or you will be better of with Andy or Ritas book. They are proven study guides that will make you pass the exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is Your Book
I have all the three best selling PMP exam books, and I've found that this is the BEST. I agree with almost all the positive comments about this book by other reviewers and I will not repeat them. However, I must say this is the only PMP exam book (that I know of) that explains those exam objectives in the beginning of each chapter which are covered in the chapter. In the following, I share my experience with this book in the areas which have not been talked about much in other reviews:
5-0 out of 5 stars Passed the Exam!
I've just passed the PMP exam after preparing for it largely from this book. I agree with another reviewer that quality of the questions in the book's Final Exam is very close to that of the real exam. Other things that I particularly like about this book are:

5-0 out of 5 stars This One Gets Used
I have been using Perl for many years and consider myself an advanced user. I own well over a dozen Perl books (8 published by O'Reilly), and this is the one that continually gets cracked open (it has tape on the spine -- always a good sign). The book is a little more accessible than the Programming Perl book, and it covers tons of various solutions. It's a valuable addition to the toolbox.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have
I have seen some reviews that said this can't be used to learn Photoshop from the ground up, but that is untrue, because I used this book to teach myself Photoshop with absolutely no prior knowledge whatsoever, and it does a wonderful job of explaining everything. It pretty much covers everything, and I consider it a must have. The only reason it may not be for someone is if they don't learn well from just reading; that, I admit, is a downside of this book. Sometimes it can be difficult to understand what they are talking about by just reading the instructions. If you are sitting by the computer though, it's very easy to follow step by step. If you choose to buy a book with lessons, such as classroom in a book, then I definitely recommend this book as a follow-up.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Really Great Book!!!
I'm a member of an online gaming community and I was wanting to learn how to make my own "Sigs". After a few hours of reading I was able to use layers to make my first kool looking sig. I also was able to use Photoshop for all the graphics on my web site. If you want to learn to use Photoshop, then this book is a MUST have...

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent textbook on E-commerce
I just received the new edition of Laudon and Traver's textbook on e-commerce and think its just great! I previously used the 2nd edition, which I also loved, and this new edition lives up to its predecessor. It contains all new and updated information and is extremely current. Its so well-written that it doesn't read like a textbook at all. I highly recommend it to anyone interesting in learning about e-commerce.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but dated....
I have used this textbook for several years - while it is a good basic source of information, it badly needs updating and supplementation in several important areas: RFID is not mentioned; Mobile/hand set E-Commerce is covered at a surface level, Search Engine and major Portal marketing needs updating, and much of the data are 3+ years old - very old given the rapid changes taking place.

Editorial Review

Danny Goodman felt that he couldn't trust any of the documentation on Dynamic HTML (DHTML) that he read (too many contradictions), so he wrote this book as a reference for working with his own clients. After testing tags and techniques on multiple releases of the main browsers, Goodman came up with very practical information--some of which you may not find in any other resource.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Boring book
After reading some of the review for this book on this site, I question if these reviewer were sober when they wrote there reviews. The book is boring, and after a few chapters you'd maybe start looking for a new book. And if that CD breaks, from what i've been told, you'll have a hard time getting another one from the book company. I'd suggest you check out your local book store and take a look inside the book before you buy it; it would save u alot headache.

4-0 out of 5 stars Read it in One Night
There aren't many eBay books that are entertaining but this one was. Lots of good stories to keep you interested, and when all is said and done there's a lot of good information here on creating auctions and really thinking like a seller. Somewhat self-promotional, buy hey the guy's a success story.

3-0 out of 5 stars Enthusiasm is contagious, but Ginsberg has much to gain
This book is fun and well written, but it started to sound a lot like Network Marketing books I'd read in the past, and when I first sniffed the aroma of Ginsberg's intent to sell me ebay tools, I was a bit dismayed...okay, he's got more than one agenda. I agree that there is A LOT of repeition, but maybe that's a good thing.. .it sinks in. However, Ginsburg's writing gives the feeling sales are really hot on Ebay...and that if you put stuff upyou're very likely to sell it. Maybe, maybe not. Halfway through the book I went online to check the seller listings... as he suggests....and I was pretty mollified to see just how much goes UNSOLD on EBAY every day.Putting those stats side by side would be a bit sobering, I think. I love to buy on ebay, I've tried to sell a few things without much luck (except new books.)YOu have to spend more to sell more and I've been stingy.. so with his help, I plan to experiment a bit...but I have no doubts this is not as easy as his enthusiasm makes it sound. But when you're making millions, I guess it's easy to get enthusiastic, especially if that sells more books and more software. Now I'm looking for a book that says... yes, you can, BUT!:-)

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of information for the beginner.
There is a lot of information to get you excited about starting to buy/sell on Ebay.A tiny bit too many "stories", but excellent source of the basics.Just be sure to flag pages as you go to reference and your start up will be much easier.Just attended Ebay 101 class ($95) and much of the stuff I had already learned from this book.Definitely worth the price of the book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This should be your first book on Perl
I first tried to learn Perl by using the other O'Reilly book, "Programming Perl". I was completely lost. Then I found this book and my second attempt was much more successful. This book is great for self-teaching, and the book chapters should be read in order as each chapter builds on previous ones. Each chapter has plenty of good programming exercises with answers in the back of the book. I review this book in the context of the table of contents.
5-0 out of 5 stars A terrific Perl intro
This is my favorite Perl book, as this is where I started, and where I go back for refreshers.I have the Third Edition, and can only imagine that the Fourth Edition is just that much better. As for it being a Unix only book, I would dispute that, as I learned quite enough about Perl to create scripts for the Win32 port of Perl running on Win 2000.
5-0 out of 5 stars Second Edition ... you need to upgrade.
I had originally bought the Second Edition years ago and am finding that the two books now have very, very little in common -- it's like reading 2 different books.I'm not sure about the Third Edition, but if you have the First or Second, it would be a good time to upgrade. I really like how this edition is written ... very good read! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A really good PHP introduction book
First off, this book is completely useless to you if you have do not have adequate OOP programming background. It jumps around different topics and does not really explain why things are arranged a certain way. This book pretty much assumes you have knowledge of either C, C#, Java techniques - which makes PHP extremely easy to understand. If HTML is all you have under your belt, this is probably a terrible book to buy.
5-0 out of 5 stars 37 Chapters, 3 Books in one, and a must have desktop reference.
This is as it states for the Novice to the Professional and that is completely true.
5-0 out of 5 stars The only PHP and MYSQL book you'll need!
This book is geared for three types of readers I believe (a rarity among books). First are people who have no experience in programming or web development whatsoever, the second are people who have worked in other languages whether be on the desktop or the web, the third type are people who already have some basic PHP and/or MYSQL experience and want to further their knowledge into intermediate topics. How can a book accommodate so many types of readers? Well, being slightly over 800 pages helps and also this book is very well written and organized and focuses on all the important topics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very clear and easy to follow guide
I have struggled with Object Relational issues for years and have tried a few different techniques until I stumbled across Hibernate a few months ago. Since then I have started a new medium sized enterprise application and decided to use Hibernate. Needless to say, I was impressed with increased productivity from removing my attention from the relational model and placing my focus on the Object Model.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good book
We enjoyed it, had some great hibernate tips, all the guys in the company took it for their vacations to read...

2-0 out of 5 stars Great concepts, Worthless index, Questionable technology
The authors do a fine job explaining the concepts behind object relational mapping in general and Hibernate in particular.Too bad the book is absolutely crippled by its index. For instance, there is no entry for "discriminator" (or anything close to that), so to go back to that section where I positively recall reading about this term, I have to browse the whole book.Ridiculous.Furthermore, the following statement by the authors themselves throws this entire technology into question: "Retrieving persistent objects from the database is one of the most interesting (and complex) parts of working with Hibernate."If this is so complex, than the Java community has been sold a bill of goods, and its no wonder the exodus to Ruby is gaining momentum. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good Choice for the CSS beginner and up
This book is a well written introduction into the world of css and pinpoints key concepts of css. It's by far one of the most readable texts that I have picked up out of all the technical books I've read in my few years of being alive. The book lacks a little in having some references to an example on a previous page while the reference to it is one to pages after the example. This discrepency is understood though since it is hard to keep everything together and not spill out onto other pages when planning the layout of a book. Overall this is a good book on css, and I would recommend it to anyone wishing to start into css.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book but irritating typos
I would have given this book atleast 4 stars if it weren't for the misleading typos! here's a few - Chapter 6 Pg 127 refers to Figure 6.2 (which doesn't exist!) instead of Figure 6.3; Chatper 10 Pg 228 the example "H1 {color: #ff000 }" is plain wrong (needs a extra zero at the end) and will not work.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great resouce for new to css
ritten by the authors of CSS, at first I found it a bit heavy in dialogue and backgrounds. Not until you open the book to the index does one actually realize the wealth of information in the book. Do not expect this book to show examples of the next great page, but as a resource in trouble shooting it helped explain alot of questions I either was too lazy to look up in Dreamweaver Help or couldnt find the right type of answer elsewhere. My level is pretty much entry intermediate, but with this book, it took me a bit higher. I am getting rid of my introductory CSS books and using this one as my main go to guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars a comprehensive widget set for C++
When C++ was first put together in the 80s, it was just before the advent of GUIs for many programs. But as Java arose in the 90s, and then C#, the need for easy UI coding in C++ became very clear. Hence Qt was developed. Now in its 4th version. And available for Microsoft Windows, linux, Macintosh and several unixes. The accompanying CD has version 4.1.1. Though by the time you get this book, you might want to scout the Web, either for patches to this version, or a more recent version.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Resource!
I recently volunteered to assist as webmaster for a friend's mayoral campaign website.Having last used HTML and some Javascript years ago for a very basic personal homepage, I needed to get up to speed quickly. So I hit many, many websites and web tutorials on XHTML and CSS.They gave me an acceptable, but not entirely solid foundation on designing with those technologies.I needed more, and fortunately found this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely pedagogic and well-written.
I really liked this book and consider it to be in a class for itself (no pun intended :-).
5-0 out of 5 stars The best CSS book yet
I've read many CSS books last several years, but still this is the best CSS book out there. The content itself deserves 5 stars, but what separates it from others is Dan's teaching style. From start to end, every page is carefully organized and well planned with readers in mind, this book is not just collection of good CSS tips and tricks. There are so many great books on CSS these days, but this is the best. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great usability book
As my second most favorite usability book, this book points out the hundreds of ways a site can go wrong, and the many points to consider when designing sites. Let's be honest - it's pretty impossible to satisfy all their guidelines and STILL meet a deadline - but at least you can pick the ones that matter most to your company, and be aware of the once you missed. Another must read for web designers.
4-0 out of 5 stars Must read for any serious web developer
rioritizing Web Usability by Jakob Nielsen and Hoa Loranger can best be described as a more 'strict' approach to web usability. If you have been in web development for any extended period of time it is likely that you have heard the name Jakob Nielsen. He offers great insight to web usability and has for many years. Some may view him as strict, some as normal, and still some as WAY off his rocker. No matter how you view him, he deserves much respect for his time spent in usability studies and the (somewhat timeless) statistics and information he brings to the table. I just finished reading this book, coupled with "Don't Make Me Think" by Steve Krugg, and appreciated what all of the authors could present through statistics, screenshots, and customer insight.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good value for money
