5-0 out of 5 stars Use Flash? Get this book!
I surprised how much information was packed into this book. Colin really holds nothing back, but doesn't forget about the beginners in the start of the book where he explains the basics. This allows the reader to quickly move into the more advanced sections and ultimately end up with a wealth of knowledge that came from one head.

2-0 out of 5 stars Just another book......
This book is targeted to users that are not new to programming. So, that's why I got the book since I know C++ and Java pretty well. But even if I didn't, and i knew some JavaScript (AC is JavaScript pretty much), I would also be considered as the target reader. With that said, these are my thoughts:
5-0 out of 5 stars it's essential if you want to program flash
since actionscript 3.0 has hit the scene in flex 2.0 and flash 9 is right around the corner, i'm slightly hesitant to recommend this book today (september 2006). BUT, the book is still great and if you are serious about programming in flash, i would say that it's essential material to learn. it's not a reference (although there is a small reference in the book) and it's not about how to program animation or do "cool" things in flash. it's about how to create custom classes and how to do it properly using best practices in flash. that's pretty much it. even as AS 3.0 crawls onto the scene, this book still gives a solid foundation and, from what i know about AS 3.0 so far, nothing you learn here will hinder you as you eventually move on to AS 3.0. the next version of actionscript will simply build upon what AS 2.0 has done. if you are still writing classes the old fashioned AS 1.0 way and feel like it's time to move forward, buy this book. if you've never written classes before, in any language, this book will show you how and provide a great foundation in doing so.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best video book out there
I have several excellent books on video, and I have to say that this book is easily the best.Charles Poynton covers all of the basics in a very understandable and readable fashion.Video is a complicated topic, and one that is not well understood. There are many facets of video that are commonly confused, such as the differences, benefits and drawbacks of interlaced versus progressive scan video, or the difference between pixels and lines of resolution.Digital Video and HDTV Algorithms and Interfaces is very well written, and is a must-read for any serious video professional or hobbyist.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book on video technology
"Digital Video and HDTV Algorithms and Interfaces" is definitely the best book on video and television I have ever hold in my hands.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not easy
I bought this book to understand basics and fundementals , it's quite organized and has a lot of info. in it , but you must have a good background to keep on reading and even you must have a lot of refrences to go back to while reading this book, at the first chapters there are instants that you need to go to chapter 16 to read then come back, I say this book is wonderfull if you have a good solid background ( mathematically and numericaly in Video standers and transforms... ). ... Being a long time Logic user, i still happen to not utilize the App to it's fullest. What I like about this book, is the Structure, with the chapters and the Tasks to fulfill. So it get's me closer to a streamlined workflow.

4-0 out of 5 stars Apple Logic Pro 7 Training Level 1 is Essential knowledge

5-0 out of 5 stars A treasure!
This series is a treasure to keep. The book is filled with great diagrams and very easy to understand language.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
First is Knuth, second is Corman that brings the art of algorithms closer to earth. Then is Sedgewick. This book provides very good balance between theory and practice and lets the practitioners know that programming is a bit more than just writing "if" and "for" and that the art of algorithms is not only art but also science. This book evolved from early editions (Algorithms in C, 1990) and keeps the standard. These two volumes is the must for every serious programmer.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent combination of books
Sedgewick's publisher (Addison-Wesley) has gathered his two books, Algorithms in Java, parts 1-5, into one resource for developers. Convenient, for you now have something that spans the most common algorithms encountered during computer programming. Logically, the combination of the two volumes is very coherent. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Java Book That Hits Multiple Audiences
There is a lot of good information in this book for the experienced programmer who is new to Java.I just moved to a new team that is doing Java development although I come from a C++ background. This book is especially helpful to people coming from a C++ background because it calls out places where the languages differ. In the early chapters, you could skim the topics and read just these to get up to speed. However, it also has the details for people with other backgrounds such as Visual Basic or COBOL.The first six chapters deal with the fundamentals of the language. However, chapters 7-10 deal with Swing and Applets.I do not consider either of these to be truly fundamentals, and the examples in chapters 11-13 are cluttered by Swing.I would prefer that these topics have separate treatment in Volume II.It is also odd that JAR files and Properties are buried at the end of chapter 10 (Applets). However, these are minor complaints on an overall solid introduction to the Java programming language. If you find yourself at the point of making the switch to Java, I think this is the best book available.

1-0 out of 5 stars Core Java2 volumeI6th Edition
When I saw this seller list NEW for his book, I decided to buy it.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Truly Great Book. A scholarly tutorial.
This is a book written by someone who not only knows Java but is an actual computer scientist with experience in the corporate world (read his brief bio on the back cover.) He is also a college professor at San Jose State University and thus, unlike too many authors of programming books at certain publishers, his qualifications aren't summed up by statements like " . . . has been programming since he was 13 years old, " or, " . . . is a programmer at a Fortune 100 company on Wall Street." This book teaches you all of the fine details that "The Java Programming Language Guide" sometimes leaves out. That book, one of whose authors is James Gosling, is the only book that exceeds Horstmann's effort here, however it is not a tutorial and thus you need Horstmann's text alongside it. His treatment of "Objects and Classes" (chapter 4) and "Inheritance" (chapter 5) are alone worth the price of the book. This is a rigorous and challenging book and it should not be your first book in Java programming. After you've finished with Walter Savitch's Java textbook then purchase "The Java Programming Language Guide" and "Core Java" (both volumes) and see what computer programming is really all about (hint: it's not about setting up database driven websites to sell trinkets or to facilitate your blogging.) ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A fine pick.
Dan Saffer's DESIGNING FOR INTERACTION: CREATING SMART APPLICATIONS AND CLEVER DEVICES comes from an authority who's worked as a Webmaster and interactive media master for the past decade. His design savvy here offers beginner to intermediate designers a range of applications and shortcuts, from using controls and widgets to designing the better mousetrap. While his isn't strictly a computer book, it does provide a range of tips on brainstorming and creating smarter applications for hardware and software alike. A fine pick.
5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant overview of the fundamentals!
This is an insightful and necessary read for anyone entering the field of interaction design/user experience but also serves as a wonderful refresher for current practitioners, covering all the major areas, from software to devices, to entire systems. With lucid, articulate, easy language Saffer explains what I regard as the fundamentals of interaction design: definitions, contexts, methods/approaches, and new frontiers, all backed by relevant and clear examples. Some noteworthy highlights: compact case studies of real designs (like Google's IM), interviews with veteran design pros like Hugh Dubberly, Marc Rettig, Shelley Evansen, and a sharp look at Service Design and design for devices. Saffer fluidly conveys what I've always struggled to express: interaction design is not just web design, but a mode of thought and action towards improving relationships.
5-0 out of 5 stars The hardest button to button.
Whether you're a designer or programmer, designing for interaction is the hardest part of the job. I might spend one hour programming, and thereafter two hours staring at the user interface I expect PEOPLE to use. This book provides you with the tools and information to deal with interaction as an expert, and making the user experience fun and effective! This is Web 2.0, ajax is but a dusty tool to fix that which was never broken, it just feels that way. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Needs more examples!
I think this guy has a book about how the inmates are running the asylum...well this book suffers from what happens when the subject matter experts (SME) are allowed to write books.BORING!!!SME's always seem to forget to include compelling examples.Yes there are little screen shots, but IMO in order for a book to be compelling that has to do with design...it needs to show LOTS of examples of good design. The bulk of the book should be about breaking down those designs.I need to hear why a specific design is effective.Take a hint from Steve Krugs book "Don't Make me Think".That book is extremely effective without inundating the reader with jargon.Lots of examples withmeaningful visual breakdowns.Afterall...isnt UI design a VISUAL communication form?

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for experienced developers
I have 7 years experience and I wasn't able to get any value out of this book.Based on some of the reviews on this site I thought that the book would be worth buying but unless you are in school or right out of school then your $35 is better spent elsewhere.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good on concepts, weaker on examples
This follow up to About Face is a good overview of the critical concepts to improve software usability.Cooper and Reiman know their stuff.Reading this certainly provides you with the grounding you need to make good decisions. At a tactical level, the book could certainly do more to help with real-world examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book I have read on selling on eBay!
"eBay income," by Cheryl Russell is unique among the hundreds of books on the subject, in that it takes the reader on a step by step journey through the process of learning how to sell on eBay, without overloading them with difficult to understand language that is so prevalent in other books on eBay selling. 5-0 out of 5 stars A knowledgeable "reader friendly" grasp of just how to go about doing business on the eBay website
eBay Income: How Anyone Of Any Age, Location, And/Or Background Can Build A Highly Profitable Online Business With eBay by Cheryl L. Russell offers a knowledgeable "reader friendly" grasp of just how to go about doing business on the eBay website. Outlining in considerable detail the most tactful and profitable approach to making the most profitable and productive management approach to sales online through the auspices of eBay, readers are provided with a wealth of first hand, experienced-based, practical advice that can have those readers up and operating before the day is out. If you have something to sell or are looking for something to buy as part of your own online entrepreneurial venture utilizing the Internet's most popular do-it-yourself website for buying and selling, then eBay Income is especially recommended and essential reading for its profusion of precise, intelligible tips, overall ideas, and step-by-step instructions.
5-0 out of 5 stars From the basic to the inspired
Never been on eBay before but looking for a place to sell some treasures that you found at the second-hand shop?Put up a couple of auctions and wondering why they never sold?Trying to figure out how to maximize your profit in such a variable environment?Look no further!Russell's book covers everything from setting up a seller's account (and the different types thereof) to writing a business plan, marketing strategies, and success stories. The main point of the book is that, like any business, running an online eBay business required professionalism in all areas. What separates the eBay hobbyist from the profitable business owner is the willingness to plan ahead, account for income and expenses responsibly and legally, and to sell yourself at every opportunity. This book will show you how. After the first chapter (an introduction to eBay's mission and history), the book moves through the information you'll need to know through the process, and each chapter ends with a checklist of steps to complete before you move on to the next chapter. The book is clearly and entertainingly written, with lots of fun anecdotes showing you other eBay sellers and how they learned the hard way (so you don't have to).Although you may not be able to find exactly what you're looking for using just the chapter titles or section headings, I really would recommend that you read the entire book and complete the worksheets before moving on, anyway.I've recommended this book to a number of my personal friends and clients, and I definitely recommend it to anyone looking to increase profits and reduce hassles. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Network textbook
This is a great book for learning the CCNA material. It will teach you all of the major points that you need to study to pass the exam. Even if you are not taking the exam and just want information on how networks are designed, this is the book. I found it a good read and the practice CD was priceless in learning how to issue commands to the various Cisco routers. A great book and worth the money too!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Clearify something....5 stars not accurate...
Everyone here critizes<< typos here and there.. lacking this and lacking that... WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND if this book is so bad... remember that next time you write a negative review.. that will help us (the newbies) know where to get this right information....
3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointingand frustrating
For the last 3 years I would have sworn by Todd Lammle's CCNA Study Guides; mainly do to his free-hearted writing style that seem to add an element of humor to complex reads. However, this book has far too many errors and lacked technical intensity. In the past, I used Todd's 607 Study Guide to pass the archived 607 exam on the first try.Two and half years later, I purchased the 801 Study Guide with the same enthusiasm. After reading this book twice, taking all 8 bonus exams repeatedly, and exhausting the capabilities of the simulation software, I took the comprehensive 801 exam this weekend and did not pass!My exam had multiple questions that were not covered in Lammle's book. Not to mention the lack of coverage of NAT, that seems to magically show up on my exam.None of which was covered with enough detail within this book. Moreover, the Virtual Lab was not exhaustive and far too basic (No OSPF, EIGRP or NAT simulation capabilities). In my opinion, this is not acceptable. Especially when I was faced with these topics through out my exam.I wish this book did a better job of pinpointing the areas that were and would be crucial on the exam.Although Todd Lammle attempted to do place emphasis on certain points, none of those points showed up on test day.Obviously, Cisco has made the exam harder to achieve by reading materials alone (even there own text). Therefore, accurate and thought-provoking supplemental materials are a must!!The bonus questions simply repeat themselves over-and-over again. The book as a whole lacked coverage on crucial technologies and is filled with confusing statements and answers that turn out to be mistakes- Go figure! All of which, led me to give this book 3 stars (maybe closer to 2 1/2). ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Verbose with Very Little Detail
Quick note: I am an experienced programmer, but fairly new to Ruby and the Rails framework. I have read all the other Ruby and Rails books available to date.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great intro to ruby, ruby for rails from beginner to intermediate
chapter 13 - Ruby dynamics is worth the price by itself.
2-0 out of 5 stars I don't quite like it
this maybe against the popular opinions, but the book is thick on author's philosophical thinkings (and the author is obviously fond of) on how various things are tied together, but thin on the actual things that you can do, and what to do. You have to wade through bunch of such mommy and apple pie stuff to get the point, which is a a pain. On the other hand, if you have plenty of time, and want to take it to savor the good of either ruby or rails or their interconnects, maybe it is the right book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential For People Who Want To Make Money With Google
'Google Advertising Tools: Cashing in with Adsense, Adwords, and the Google APIs' by Harold Davis is one of those specialty books that is absolutely a must have for anyone that wants to succeed with advertising on Google.Teaching you the ins and outs of how to use the behemoth marketing tools AdSense and AdWords, this book will instantly start producing results if you stick to what this says and learn to make ads that are not only seen, but seen OFTEN.300+ pages of advertising yum yums will get more people to pull over and take a look at your web site, and you will better understand the metrics behind what kinds of advertising works and what DOESN'T.
4-0 out of 5 stars Though not groundbreaking, a comprehensive and current reference on marketing your site through Google
Harold Davis has not necessarily broken new ground with his "Google Advertising Tools" book. Yet, he's managed to put together a volume that summarizes effectively the basics of SEO and how to structure your site to maximize return on investment as a lead into Google Advertising at large. Starting with Google AdSense (placing Google Ads in your site), he works his way into AdWords (buying pay-per-click keyword-based ads) to wrap the book up with a detail discussion about the APIs offered by Google if developing tools to maximize your overall use of Google's interface and options is up your alley.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent textbook for learning Java...
If you prefer your computer technology learning in textbook style, then this is an excellent choice in books...Introduction to Java Programming - Comprehensive Version (Sixth Edition) by Y. Daniel Liang. It's an entire college-level course in Java in one very big (and well-written) volume...
5-0 out of 5 stars Great intro through intermediate text
I've tried learning C++ many times and kept getting lost between the introductory and intermediate level texts. It was suggested that I consider trying Java, so I reluctantly found this text by Liang and am making my way through. Not only am I not getting bogged down in the C-compiler, but Liang's explinations and examples are so much clearer than anything I ran into in the C++ texts I had used.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Way to Learn
The author does a great job of presenting a complicated subject in an easy to grasp step by step method. Dr. Liang obviously understand how to both teach and educate at the same time. I found this book through a formal class, but we only covered a subset of the chapters. I took the book and finished on my own. The book is that well structured and written. As a pleasant side note, it also contains zero errors that I could find, contrary to may software books.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Read
Not a book for beginning programmers, however if you have minimal java experience and are proficient in other languages you will be able to figure it out.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Material On Search History & Google
Extremely readable book. Good history of early seach companies like GoTo and their business models, in addition to Google

3-0 out of 5 stars Half the Battelle's book zips! Then journalism settles in
"The Search" by John Battelle is a casual and mostly entertaining walk through the last 10 or so years of digital search, mostly but not entirely centered around the phenomenon of Google.
2-0 out of 5 stars History of Google, Not Search Engines
Though I'm coming to a review of The Search a year too late, I can explain why. I bought the book on its release, very excited to read some good journalism about the hottest business topic of the day. I was sure that Battelle, who had been chronically his progress on the book on his own blog, would deliver. Halfway through the book (in a matter of three days - a possible sign pointing to its lack of depth) I'm realizing that this is not the case.

5-0 out of 5 stars So logical, this book should have been done years ago.
Can you sign your name with a bar of soap?Of course not!So, why are you trying to paint digital images with a mouse?A pen tablet and a program like Photoshop or Corel Painter are the only sensibletools for those times when you're creating an image from scratch or doing brush-oriented retouching or digital airbrushing.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Photoshop and Painter Artist Tablet Book
This is a great book. As both a Graphic Designer and an Illusrtator, I stradle the fence between commercial and traditional art often. This book has helped me incorporate my traditional painting style into a form I could not accomplish before.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for artists!
As a long-time colleague of Cher's, I have the utmost respect for the dedication with which she crafts her books. Her "Painter WOW! Book" is the industry standard for anyone wanting to learn Painter-- with art collected from the best Painter experts around the world. Now with this "Photoshop and Painter Artist Tablet Book," Cher has taken us into her working studio, to share her own tips and techniques. There are lessons for every level of artist and digital expertise-- all illustrated with her beautiful work. Whether or not you can arrange to take one of Cher's wonderful classes or workshops, this book will provide you with hours of lessons from one of the pioneers who helped develop the world of digital painting. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars very good book.
implementation and design of classes wise this book is replete with ideas. Since this book dealt with FDM, which are either cubbersome or difficult to program say american options, better is to deal with FE methods.

5-0 out of 5 stars Computational Finance made efficient
This book encapsulates all that is wonderful about OOP and shows how generic programming techniques (based on the STL) can be effectively applied to financial engineering and numerical analytic problems. The book requires only a first-course level knowledge of C++ (at the level of for example Ivor Horton's Beginning C++) and a first course level knowledge of Financial Mathematics (at the level of for example John Hull's masterpiece) and takes the reader on an entertaining journey through the basics of the STL and the applications of STL constructs to computational-financial and numerical-analytic problems, especially those relating to the numerical solution of partial differential equations. Also, the author makes a persuasive case for finite-difference methods and deals with a few subtleties of the Crank-Nicholson algorithm. For best results, it should be read along with a decent book on the Standard Library (for example the one by Nicolai Josuttis). Overall, it's a pleasure to read and learn from, on a par with Mark Joshi's little design-patterns volume, and more detailed!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book in c++ instrument pricing, period.
Let me just say that I have a few financial modelling books, from Dr. Brooks to Mr. Joshi, and this is the best book by far.It clearly explain how to price a particular instruments using this poweful language. The book uses Standard Template Language (STL), by doing so your code are more readable and much faster. If I only had this book a few years back. Now I must say this book is for C++ programmers and Quants you really need to know C++ from beginning to end, templates, pointers, references, classes or that stuff you need it. This is the only book that comes with working code, it doesn't matter what type of compiler you have the code in the CD will work.Mr. Duffy explains how to model one factor and two factor Black-Scholes equations using finite differences, options(vanilla, exotic),interest rate and much more. The CD even comes with an Excel driver to transfer your data to Excel. Quant superstar Justin London is coming with his new book in a few months, and that book might over take this one, but as of right now this is the best C++ financial pricing book around. You can't go wrong with this one. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Learnt invalueable lessons from this book.
Photoshop Elements 4.0 may not be as feature rich as Photoshop CS. But it packs more than enough punch to stand on its own. Scott Kelby clearly illustates this point in this book. The organization of this book is very helpful to jump specifically to a particular technique and use them. The teach by example model is very effective. A must have reference for anyone using Photoshop Elements 4.0.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
I was extremely impressed with this book! You can go directly to the chapter you are interested in, but I read it cover-to-cover to not miss anything.Beautiful, clear illustrations of exactly what you need to do for all kinds of photo modifications, including stuff I would never have thought possible.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a great book!
Don't be scared away from buying this book because some reviewers here say, "It's not for beginners."True, it doesn't take you through the product menu by menu and tell you what each little tool or piece of functionality does. But if you want to learn the basics of photo editing (anything more advanced than the auto fix options)in Photoshop Elements 4, this is definitely a good book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars A true manual for CS2
If you have Photoshop you simply must have this book. It is one of the finest books on a using a complex piece of software I have ever bought. If you buy no other manual for Photoshop this is the one you should buy.

1-0 out of 5 stars instantly dissapointed...
I produce motion graphics with Adobe After Effects, and have constantly run into the problem that on-line tutorials start with preparing or creating files in Photoshop first, then bringing those files into After Effects for manipulation. When I tell people I am a videographer, so many say "oh, you must be great with Photoshop then", so finally, I decided to take the plunge and try to learn this program.
4-0 out of 5 stars No CD???
Surprise. This book does not have a CD.For such book this is a big disadvantage. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A very very useful book
I have been using this book a lot, in the recent months, and I am finding it very useful. I am not *at all* an expert latex user, but I do have decent programming skills, and I usually use a computer for hours every day, so my IT skills are decent, overall. For writing technical documents I have been using for years a fairly dated version of ScientificWorkplace, but I am now slowly switching to do more and more in latex, which gives me greater flexibility. What I usually do now is writing my documents in ScientificWorkplace, and then taking care of formatting and other unusual features editing the documents in Latex, through a program called WinEdt. In almost all cases, when I am in trouble with some commands or options, I find a clear solution in this book. For this reason, if your profile sounds a bit like mine, I would highly recommend this book. The new (fourth) edition also includes extensive references to the "hyperref" package, which is very very useful to create great pdf output that includes links to footnotes/sections/equations etc., bookmarks, and active buttons.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not the best for absolute beginners, but great reference
For starting out in Latex, I recommend one of the many free online tutorials, such as the "not-so-short introduction to Latex".That will get you more than started. This book is a great add-on reference to that, and the level is just right: not too wordy, but easy to follow. It has much deeper coverage of how to do graphics and drawings, how to create a bibliography, how to create postscript and pdf files, etc, in addition to the basics, of course.

4-0 out of 5 stars Brief, effective introduction to Latex
This is an ideal introduction to the TeX line of text formatting tools. It starts with a high level overview of the toolset. Then dives into document construction, then into tables, lists, mathematical formatting, and into user constructions and extensions for bibliographies, as well as other topics. PDF and Postscript formatting is covered. As well as AMS-TeX which is more extensions or mathematical formatting.
