3-0 out of 5 stars A reference useful for a limited audience among those who already know XML basics
O'Reilly's XML IN A NUTSHELL is, like all entries in the Nutshell series, a desktop quick reference. It provides concise information about nearly all matters of XML, and is split into roughly four parts. The first introduces XML, the concept of tags, well-formedness, Unicode, DTD's and schemas, namespaces, and so forth. The second provides an overview for the many formats that are built upon XML, such as XHTML, XSL:FO, Docbook, etc., and technologies that plug-in into XML, namely XSLT, XPath, XLinks, XPointers, XInclude, and CSS. The fourth covers DOM and SAX, the APIs for dealing with XML. Finally, the book ends with a "Reference section" for various technologies covered earlier in the book, structured much like O'Reilly's pocket guides. I found the Reference section somewhat inconvenient, it causes flipping back and forth when each section could have been simply integrated with the previous discussion of the relevant technology earlier in the book. Furthermore, the book ends with a long series of Unicode character tables, which are of limited utility, as they cover only a portion of Unicode, which has already expanded in the time since, and these tables simply bloat the book a little.
3-0 out of 5 stars Strictly a Reference book only...
I took this book as it was a recommended book for one my courses.. i thought it would be same as other text books, where you actually LEARN THRU THE BOOK..
2-0 out of 5 stars Not an introductorytutorial
I chose this book after reading the glowing reviews here at Amazon, hoping to use it as an introductory tutorial to XML. I was disappointed!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good program, difficult to learn
The product is a very good one but difficult to learn, I have spent much time in self help. The documentation is difficult to use and to follow.I had to separately purchase an instruction book.Particularly confusing is how it organizes the photo and the methods to categorize, tabing, collections, etc. After getting the hang of it, editing photos is really fun, and the results are great. Printing and emailing is rather simple.Good program, Thumbs Up.
5-0 out of 5 stars This is a must read.
I struggled with Photoshop Elements 4 until I found Deke McClelland's Photoshop Elements 4 one-on-one.His training methods are well designed and will lead you to an understanding of the power of Photoshop Elements 4 I never imagined. The video is better than first class and the book is written in a very clear way that leads the student on a guided descovery of Elements 4.I asked my local camera store for help and they promised something in the future. When I cruised through Amazon.com and read other reviews of this book I simply took a chance and bought it.Wow, what a wonderful surprise.Deke won't let you down.Paul

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have !!!
Photshop is an asset to anyone with a computer. This book, which is quite easy to follow, is a much needed addition to the bookshelf.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good introduction
Although I have not plowed through this entire book yet, it is shaping up as one of the books I've been looking for to tie up all the different threads that now make up the task of creating a good website.I may never actually create my business website all on my own, but at least I will have familiarity with the various tools that are currently being used so I can intelligently discuss and understand what the professionals are recommending. One of the toughest parts of learning any new technology these days is the constant improvement and changes going on.It's impossible to guess what may become standard and what may be obsolete by the time I finish the book.Books like this at least give an average person like me a fighting chance to keep as current as possible without continuous formal education.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly surprised
I am a design student, and have not yet learned web design, or how to build a website.
3-0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction Book
LEARNING WEB DESIGN is an excellent start to an understanding of how html works and what building websites is all about.Without getting too much into the specifics, and stopping before diving into more complicated items such as forms, and book builds a get over-all picture. If you're looking to become a professional, self-taught web designer, you probably want another guide. But if you are simply trying to build a personal web page and get started on a road to web design as a hobby, then this book is great.

4-0 out of 5 stars An incredible reference, but NOT for beginners.
If you have the basics of actionscript down, this book is great.I use it at least once a week for quick reference and code examples. They leave enough margin on the sides of the pages to include your own notes, and the INDEX is awesome.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical, comprehensive advice for creating and presenting documentation
If you're a nerd like me, then you feel giddy when someone publishes a cool nerdbook. I have stayed up late reading this book and and filled the margins with notes and stars. Brown gives simple, applicable advice about creating and presenting Web deliverables.
5-0 out of 5 stars Keep the "White Board Book" Alongside Your Polar Bear Book
Dan Brown's first offering is a practical guide for Information Architects (IA) and other usability and user experience professionals in the web/software design and human factors engineering industries. Because IA is an emerging field, Dan draws from his vast experience to describe 10 typical deliverables that help facilitate the design of useful products.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginner to intermediate
I would recommend downloading the sample from the website to get a good idea of if the book's style works for you.Overall, the book provides a top notch introduction to CSS as well as good design and application tips. The emphasis on seperation of style and content is truly appreciated.I would strongly recommend this book to learn to properly build basic sites, and to build a foundation to build more advanced development skills on top of.

5-0 out of 5 stars Utopia, indeed!
I can't believe I've been so mired in the -stone ages- of Table-based web site design for so long. Rachel made me realize just how easy it can be, with a little care and forethought, to put together an excellent foundation for a site's layout.
5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding the CSS Revolution
CSS has completely changed the way that websites are designed. That is, if anything, an understatement: CSS has revolutionized Web design. Designers can do things with CSS that would have taken a LOT more time and effort to do using straight HTML 3.2 - if they could have been done at all.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice information, puts it all in context...
OK...I can see why Microsoft Visual Studio has been such a popular IDE for developers.Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Unleashed from Lars Powers and Mike Snell does a nice job in explaining the value of the latest version of this classic, as well as being an in-depth guide to the feature set...
4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction for novices and intermediate VS2005 developers
This is a pretty impressive book, albeit a bit lengthier than it needed to be.There's tremendous coverage of everything, and I mean everything, in Visual Studio 2005.If you're new to VS 2005 then you'll find this a great guide to getting the most out of your environment. If you're fairly familiar with VS 2005 then you may still find a few goodies hidden away here too.
3-0 out of 5 stars A Good Start, but.......
It's been a long wait to start seeing books about the Visual Studio 2005 environment. You might expect that after such a long wait, the books coming out would provide you with some valuable insights into the usage of VS2005. And, to some extent, this book does provide that. There is very good coverage of the basics....the structure of the VS IDE, how to create forms, how to create webservices, etc. But, after you go through all the work of designing and coding these neat programs, you of course want to be able to roll them out for use.At that point, this book seems to lose its mission, UNLESS you happen to be using the MS Team System, because after spending 16 chapters instructing the reader on how to use a variety of tools available in most versions of Visual Studio, the book starts to discuss production publishing and deployment, but ONLY if you are using MS Team System.

4-0 out of 5 stars Loved this book
I absolutely loved this book.I have tried many of the self-teach books out there for other products and I have not found one that is as well written and easy to follow as this one. Before I purchased Photo Shop Elements 4.0, I knew nothing....zip.....nada about the program and how it worked.I was so impressed with what you can do with this software and the instructional training manual was excellent.I would highly recommend it for anyone who is new to this product or for anyone who wants to take their photo editing to the next level. It's pretty amazing.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Way to Get Familiar with Elements 4.0
I am still using this manual. So far, I do like it. What I like best are the detailed instructions on the Organizer segment of the program. I find that I am much more adept at keeping track of the pictures I take. I would never have done as well on my own by just "exploring" the program by trial and error. The Classroom book excels here.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, platform shouldn't bring down rating
I thought this book was well written and served me well when learning this incredible program. I can't see how people can rate this book with a one-star because the software isn't on the platform that they use...what has that got to do with learning the software using this book? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If you are a web designer, this is the book for you
This review refers to the third edition.
5-0 out of 5 stars This is the GOLD STANDARD for books on web design
"Wow" is about all I can say about this comprehensive guide on everything A-Z about web design.Carefully thought out, and organized, this is a reference book you'll want at your fingertips until the next updated edition comes out!Couple this with "The Complete Web Hosting Kit Pro" (also here on amazon), and you've got everything you need to create AND host your own website for free.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Update to an Already Excellent Reference
As another reviewer has pointed out, it's difficult to write a review for a book that is a reference book. But oh, what a reference book this is. If you do any web design work, you need this book. It covers virtually everything a web designer needs to know/or to be able to refer to. Among the topics Robbins covers are XHTML, CSS, web design standards, also mentions XHTML 1.1, DOM, JavaScript and so forth. While some topics are given a brief mention, that's only because a full description of some of them (like DOM) would take a book of their own.

2-0 out of 5 stars For Experienced Users Only
As a new user of this or ANY such program, I find that this book does not cover the basics. It was used in courses that I took to learn desktop publishing because of job requirements. It's pretty much monkey see, monkey do if you have no experience with this program. You don't learn the reasons why you're following the steps or how to decide which procedures apply when you're working on your own vice working with the lessons provided.I'm looking for a book that gives you a foundation for thinking things through, and this is definitely not it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting practice for Adobe Creative Suite 2
Adobe Creative Suite 2 Class Room in a Book is part of the official training series for Adobe products. This book provides various training projects that cover different fields of the graphic design.
3-0 out of 5 stars I Am A Bit Disappointed
Since I have purchased other Adobe Classrooms in a Book, I mistakenly believed that this book would contain a complete "Classroom in a Book" section for each application in Adobe CS2.I was wrong. In fact, the entire book is approximately the same size as the Classroom in a Book that was published for Pagemaker 7 alone.Let me restate that:CS2 contains several MAJOR applications, yet the Classroom in a Book for the entire suite is as thin as one published earlier for a single Adobe application!

4-0 out of 5 stars Look over a Master's shoulder
Awesome learn by example book IF you already have a little background in CSS, and even then if your knowledge is elementary you might be lost on some of the finer points. If it had a little more theory and explanations it would be a killer book, but I guess Eric Meyer didn't have patience enough for that. He is anyway a Master in CSS styling, no doubts about that, and the right author too look at for learning and inspiration. The book is structured around several projects that you see in the various developing stages from beginning to end in reasonably small steps. The explanations of what's going on are like what you would expect from a guru/designer/artist that is, far from complete andbasic. Again is like you had the chance to peek over Eric's shoulder while he works, but he won't be bothered to lose too much of his time after you. But don't get me wrong, this book is a must have for anyone interested in CSS, even if I would not buy it now (it starts being a bit dated) but would wait for his next book that should come out this autumn.

5-0 out of 5 stars Second to none!
I wanted a quick crash course in CSS; instead this book gave me a comprehensive start that led me on a path to a solid foundation in designing with Cascading Style Sheets.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good reference about CSS
The first seen this book seems one more technical guide about CSS, but to the first contact realizes that it is a great reference based on needs to everyday of the web designer.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's Much More than AJAX and PHP
I admit, when I first opened this book, I thought it would contain a dry discussion of how to use AJAX methods with PHP.But the book turned out to be so much more than advertised, I think its title must be wrong. It should have been called, "How to Use AJAX Methods with PHP, MySQL, DOM, CSS, SVG, XSL, XML, RSS, and JavaScript Frameworks."I certainly never expected to read it cover to cover, but that's what I did.
5-0 out of 5 stars AJAX and PHP by Example
This book teaches by example. The first few chapters introduce AJAX and what part PHP, Javascript and XML all play. Then the remainder of the book takes you through several example applications. The example apps are simple enough that you can easily follow. These applications include Form Validation, Chat, Suggest and Autocomplete, Charting with SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics), using grids, and Drag and Drop.
2-0 out of 5 stars very average
'ajax and php' is a very mediocre book with a lot of code in it, not especially good for learning, and not worth the price. if you want a really good ajax book, i recommend 'ajax in action'. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars More than an Actionscript introduction!
Although this book is ostensibly a "beginner" book on Flash Actionscript (no previous programming experience necessary), I got more out of this book than you can imagine, and I'm not done with it yet. I've already got a few favorite pages that I come back to again and again.
5-0 out of 5 stars great user forums, excellent book
I spent $525 on an ActionScript class at SFSU, and I learned next to nothing. On top of that the teacher didn't like you sending him emails and asked you to save your questions for class. Fortunately for me this book has been all I really needed. I basically wasted the class tuition because this book covers ten times as much as the class did and David Powers, one of the authors of the book responds to my questions generally within 24 hours on the Friend's of Ed User Forum. Because of the forum I would say this book is invaluable. The book alone is good, but actually having one one the authors answering your questions has me give this book my highest recommendation. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible
I had to buy this book for a class, it is terrible. All the author does is have you go click here and drag this to go through the exercises with no explainations. It's a waste of time and money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book out there to learn Dreamweaver
I have taken several classes to learn Dreamweaver but still didn't handle to use Dreamweaver very well...until I found this book which answered all the questions I had to master Dreamweaver. This book is the best book out there so far for beginner; A must have.

1-0 out of 5 stars I Was Forced To Read This For A Class, and Will Never Be The Same Again
This has to be the worst book ever written. Do yourself a favor, and spare yourself from the pain. The author thinks it's cute to make little quips that a 3 year might think of and put little wink things behind them, you know what I mean ;). The problem is they just annoy you to no end. The other annoying thing is that it takes the author a page and half to say "Hit the Enter Key". He spends page after page talking of inane things, hawking other books, and making stupid, juvenile comments. The book is a laborious 700 pages long, an agonizing 700 pages long. I have noticed that they have fired the dweeb who wrote it, Garo Green (who I always imagined him as a pasty white, fat 50 year old geek-you'll see what I mean if you have the misfortune of being forced to use this book), and significantly shorten the book, even though Dreamweaver 8 has many more features. I write this with the full knowledge that I will be selling my copy of this at the end of the semester, and that this review will adversely affect my selling price, but the book is really that bad. Unless you need it for a course, do not buy it. I promise you will regret it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Information
A great exploration of the hypershader and detailed info about creating custom shaders. Gain a great understanding of the principles behind the on screen magic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Texuring Lighting for the Advanced
There are few resources that compile years of industry experience into one reference guide.Lee Lanier has done just that with this book..With his background in Hollywood Special FX and Animation, working on such movies as Shrek, and Antz; his real world experience comes through in this easy to follow reference guide. This book is for those Maya users who wish to push texturing and lighting and who wish to learn specific tricks and technical aspects of the Maya Texturing and Lighting pipeline.Lee takes the time to explain the How and more importantly the Why of the techniques that the professionals use.I recommend this as an essential resource for anyone's reference library who uses Maya professionally, or even as a hobbiest!

5-0 out of 5 stars I learned more from this book than I did in school!!
I have a degree in media arts and animation and I studied many books and online tutorials for Maya. It soon became clear that those information sources would give you clues into learning new tools and techniques, but you had to decipher those clues on your own to determine the intention of the author.
